Fortunately, most of the varieties presented today are suitable for cultivation throughout Russia, regardless of the region and its climatic conditions. By choosing a good variety that is immune to common diseases, hot, changeable or cold climates, the gardener can easily grow a good harvest, saving considerable money. Planting potatoes in 2022 is subject to one simple rule - it must be done according to the lunar calendar. Then the tubers will grow beautifully, and the summer resident will not regret the time and effort spent.
When to plant potatoes in 2022?
You can start planting potatoes when the ground warms up enough. At the depth of planting tubers, which is about half a spade, the soil temperature should be about 10 degrees. Planting earlier will not save time, because in cold soil the tubers will still not begin to grow.
The choice of date for planting potatoes in the ground is influenced by various factors:
- Potato varieties - early, late and even winter varieties are distinguished.
- Growing region depending on climate.
- Planting method: under a shovel, straw, seedlings or in furrows made by a walk-behind tractor.
- Planting time of year: autumn, spring or summer.
To calculate the planting date, you need to take into account the temperature conditions that potatoes need for good development.
In the southern regions, the soil should warm up to +6-8ºС, and in the northern regions – +10-12ºС. This is due to the fact that in the south the rate of its warming is higher than in the north.
Based on this, you can roughly determine the time for planting potatoes.
Each region has its own best time for planting potatoes, in the south it is the end of March, in the central Black Earth Region it is the end of April, in the Urals and Siberia it is the second half - the end of May.
Folk trick!
Some experienced gardeners have adopted the experience of their ancestors and, when choosing dates, are guided by folk signs. It is believed that you can plant potatoes when:
- birch leaves will be the size of a 1-kopeck coin;
- the dandelion has bloomed;
- The bird cherry blossom has ended.
