Any fruits and vegetables differ in taste, seasonality of ripening, and often adaptation to certain types of soil and specific weather conditions in the region. The same applies to red currants, a healthy and tasty berry found in almost all gardens in Russia. EXPERTOLOGY experts found out which varieties are most often purchased by summer residents and professional agronomists. We present a rating of red currant varieties by fruiting season, as well as those suitable for the Moscow region.

Red currant varieties for the Moscow region

In the central zone of the country and, in particular, in the Moscow region, red currants bloom in May, so the harvest can be harvested as early as June (when planting early varieties). In August, the harvest of late-ripening berries is ready.

  • the acidity of the earth is 6-6.5 units;
  • there are no buildings or fences within a radius of 1-2 meters;
  • groundwater does not approach the soil surface closer than 1 meter.

Reference! Plants need periodic watering, annual pruning and fertilizing. To stimulate growth and development, up to 10 kg of a nutrient mixture is placed under the bush when planting.

For central Russia

The following varieties are intended for cultivation in the Central Economic Region of the Russian Federation:

  • Zadanubskaya. Winter-hardy mid-season variety, suitable for industrial cultivation for the purpose of processing. Requires mandatory prevention against powdery mildew and anthracnose. Up to 120 centners of berries are harvested from 1 hectare;

For currants intended for consumption freshly picked, the most important qualities are: appetizing appearance, pleasant taste and large size of the berries. Varieties that meet these requirements include:

  • Asora. The fruits of this currant ripen for almost 3 months and at the same time cannot please the gardener with the amount of harvest. No more than 30 centners of berries are collected from 1 hectare of garden. But the quality of this harvest exceeds any expectations: round, proportionate berries, with thin skin and a sweet taste (sugar content - 16%);

Winter-hardy

Winter-hardy red currants can withstand winter frosts down to – 40 °C without additional protection. However, the resistance of the plant can be influenced by: the depth of soil freezing and the amplitude of return frosts.

The most resistant to freezing are:

  • Scarlet dawn. A highly productive self-fertile variety for cultivation in regions of risky farming. Depending on the climate and agricultural technology, the yield varies from 70 to 200 c/ha. The taste is pleasant (4.5 points);

The sweetest

Some consumers (especially children) complain about the sour taste of red currants. The problem is solved by planting varieties with an impeccably sweet taste.

Among them are:

  • Sugar. The name of this hybrid speaks for itself - Sugar currant berries have an expressive sweet taste, the sourness is almost not felt. This crop has been grown in the Russian Federation since the 70s, despite the fact that it is still not included in the State Register;

  • Sarah. Mid-season variety for cultivation in any region of Russia. A characteristic feature of Sarah is long clusters (10-12 cm) with large berries (up to 2 grams). The variety is resistant to diseases and drought. Up to 4 kg of crop is harvested from one bush;

The Red Cross is very picky about the soil and cannot boast of frost resistance or strong immunity. However, he compensates for the hassle associated with cultivation with the quality of the harvest. Juicy sweet and sour berries contain up to 40 mg of vitamin C.

The sweetest varieties of red currants

The taste of currants is formed depending on the combination of sugars and acids in the fruit, depending on the % content of both. Main criteria for selection

When choosing a crop such as red currant for the Moscow region, first of all, attention is paid to the ripening time. If the variety is late-ripening, then in the northern regions you may not get a harvest at all. Therefore, taking into account the climate, choose the type:

  1. Early varieties produce harvest from mid-June to mid-July;
  2. The berries of mid-season varieties begin to ripen in the 2-3rd decade of July, but currants are larger and sweeter;
  3. Late varieties ripen only in August. The berries of these varieties are the sweetest.

Varieties of red currants
When choosing red currants for their farm, most gardeners focus on yield indicators. And this is fair, because everyone wants to get the maximum amount of tasty and healthy berries so that they have enough to eat in the summer and stock up on for the winter.

On a note. The most productive varieties include the Dutch Red, Rondom, Marmaladnitsa, Yuterborgskaya, and Sugar varieties.

The soil for currants should be light, loose and have a neutral pH. A site for planting is chosen without drafts and with good lighting. The soil for planting is prepared six months before the planting procedure. To do this, the ground needs to be loosened to a depth of 30 cm and fertilized with 5 kg of manure, 30 g of superphosphate and 300 g of wood ash per 1 m².

Step-by-step instructions for planting a seedling in the ground:

  1. Dig a hole that is 50 cm deep and 40 cm wide.
  2. For planting, prepare the soil substrate: mix the top layer of soil with 5 kg of peat, 5 kg of humus, 300 g of wood ash.
  3. Fill the prepared mixture of soil and fertilizers up to half of the planting hole, and then form it in the shape of a slide.
  4. Place the seedling in the hole and carefully spread the rhizome along the earthen hill.
  5. Fill it to the top with ordinary soil and compact it tightly.
  6. Water the plant with 5 liters of water.
  7. Mulch around the trunk with peat.

Taking care of a planted plant is easy. Watering the bush should be done every 2 weeks, pouring 10 liters of water into the circle around the trunk.

Important! After each irrigation or rain, you need to loosen the soil near the trunk so that it does not become covered with a dense crust and does not provoke the formation of mold on the rhizome.

In addition, once a month the tree trunk circle can be mulched with sawdust or peat to maintain the necessary moisture and also to get rid of weeds for a long time.

In the first 3 years, the plant does not need feeding, because enough nutrients were placed in the planting hole. Then you need to fertilize the red currant bushes 2 times a year:

  1. At the end of spring, apply nitrogen-containing fertilizing, which is applied in liquid form. You need to dissolve 2 kg of chicken manure in 10 liters of water. This amount of solution is enough for 1 adult bush.
  2. In the middle of the autumn period, apply fertilizing consisting of 5 kg of manure and 30 g of superphosphate, which is applied during digging. This amount of fertilizer is enough for 1 m².
