Differences between tomato varieties
Each tomato variety has its own personality.
Behind each are years of work by breeders and decades of popular selection. The beauty of the best modern tomato varieties is their diversity. So we “exploit” tomato hybrids and varieties with unlimited growth - indeterminate, semi-determinate, and determinate, the average height of which for the most part ranges from 70-80 cm, and low-growing vegetables, whose height does not exceed half a meter (all of them We will discuss the differences and features in the article below). You cannot give advice based on outside experience, as some do, deliberately introducing not entirely truthful information about the yield (quantity and quality) of grown tomatoes. They say here they are - the best varieties of tomatoes of the past (and, further, in descending numbers) for tomatoes of the year. With everything, however, it should be noted that they often focus on plant varieties proposed for planting for open and closed ground, without understanding that the advice will be good only after personal experience - better after at least 3-4 years (honestly, but extremely rarely , and 2 are sometimes enough) and with meticulous experiments (starting with growing seedlings using the soil additive Vermiculite, the growth stimulator Gumi and, ending with fertilizing: magnesium sulfate, mineral fertilizer Fertika-Kemira and so on - already in the garden) for each variety.
Why am I giving such a deadline? Yes, because you definitely need to take into account the weather, which differs from year to year, and this is the minimum, in my opinion, period to have more or less an idea about each variety of tomatoes.
Caring for tomato plants
Care includes:
- Watering.
- Weeding.
- Garter.
- Stepsonning.
- Loosening the soil.
- Feeding.
- Identification of diseases.
Since tomatoes are demanding plants, procedures are carried out constantly. In hot sunny weather, water at the root once a day in the morning or evening. After watering under the bushes, it is advisable to loosen the soil so that bacteria and fungi do not multiply in the ground without access to air. Weeding is carried out to destroy weeds, which constantly absorb minerals intended for tomato bushes.
Fertilizing is also an integral part of growing the variety. They need to be carried out at least three times per season with mineral and organic fertilizers.
Stepchildren are needed to stop the growth of extra stepsons. Usually 3-4 additional branches are left on the bush, and the remaining stepsons are broken out. To prevent the bush from breaking under the weight of the tomatoes, it is tied by the stem to the crossbar with twine. If plants grow in a bed without shelter, then support is needed to stabilize the bush.
When these conditions for caring for plants are met, gardeners receive abundant fruiting from the bushes with large and beautiful tomatoes. Judging by the reviews, the plants do not burden their owners with care, the bushes suffer little pain, grow powerful and strong, and the fruits are large and tasty.
Agrotechnical growing conditions
Cultivation of the variety is carried out in seedlings. Seeds are planted in March. To do this, a thin layer of mineral wool is placed at the bottom of the containers, soil is poured and compacted on top, and the prepared seed is laid.
Before sowing, the seeds are treated with an aqueous solution of aloe and a growth stimulator. This procedure allows you to increase the plant’s immunity to fungal and viral diseases.
The seeds are placed on the surface of the soil and mulched on top with peat or a soil layer 1 cm thick. Watering is carried out with warm water using a sprayer, the container is covered with film until sprouts appear.
To form seedlings, it is necessary to observe the temperature regime. Before emergence, the temperature is maintained at 23-25 °C. When sprouts form, the air is heated to 15-16 °C for 5-7 days, and then increased to 20-22 °C.
In the phase of formation of 2 true leaves, the seedlings are planted in separate containers. For this purpose, it is better to use peat pots, with which the seedlings are transferred to a permanent place. This method allows you to preserve the root system.
During the growing season, it is recommended to timely apply mineral fertilizers according to the manufacturer’s scheme. To create a balance of moisture and air near the root system, loosen the soil.
Water the soil periodically. To minimize weed control, the soil is mulched with grass or special black fiber.
Characteristics and description
The tomato variety President 2 F1, according to its characteristics and description of the variety, is a tall species. Compared to standard or low-growing species, you can get a harvest from the President that is several times larger due to its impressive size. The variety is early ripening, high-yielding.
- the bush does not have an end point of growth, so it is easy to shape it to the height of the greenhouse;
- the first cluster of ovaries is formed above the 7-8 leaf;
- has a small number of stepsons, but requires their timely removal;
- the ripening period of the first harvest is 95-100 days after sowing the seeds;
- requires strong support and reliable fixation of the bush;
- 5-6 ovaries are formed on each hand;
- The color of tomatoes is red-orange.
From the President’s description it is clear that the crop is worth growing on your own plot. The description and characteristics of the variety are very suitable for almost all farms.
Description of the bush
Tall large bush, with spreading branches, vegetative type. It can reach a height of 1.5-2 m, and often can grow up to 3 m. When growing, it is necessary to form a bush with 1-2 stems, which will increase productivity. The bush has small leaves, traditional green. The plant requires constant monitoring and tying up as it grows.
It is better to fix it immediately when planting the plant in the ground, then change the trellis as needed to a higher one each subsequent time. If you miss the time for tying, the branches of the bush may break off under the weight of large fruits. The bush needs regular removal of stepsons. They need to be removed when they reach 6-7 cm.
In some cases, the variety may behave as semi-identterminal. That is, its shoots can stop developing at any time. Therefore, when taking stepsons, it is recommended to leave one of the strongest and most powerful stepsons, just in case.
Description of the fruit
The fruits are heavy and large; it is possible to obtain very large specimens. The shape is round, slightly flattened. They have an orange-red hue, a dense structure, and an excellent tomato taste. The difference between the fruits of this variety is that a fresh tomato has a less rich taste than one that will be sent to ripen for 7-8 days in a dry place at room temperature.
Productivity and keeping quality
Tomato President 2 F1, description of the variety, photos and reviews indicate that the hybrid has high yield. Moreover, the presence of sunlight and climatic conditions do not affect the future harvest at all. From one bush, with proper and careful care, you can get 5-7 kg of beautiful and high-quality fruits.
The variety can rightfully be considered productive and profitable, and in almost all regions of Russia.
Purpose
The tomato was bred as a salad tomato. But its practical use is much wider. The fruits can be considered universal. They are perfect for fresh consumption and for preparing various culinary dishes, including juices and tomato pastes. Despite their large fruits, they are widely used in canning.
Advantages and disadvantages
The disadvantages of the President tomato include constant monitoring of the growth and development of the plant. As a result, it needs constant fixation as it is pulled up.
- versatility of fruits in purpose;
- tomatoes tolerate long-term transportation well without losing their presentation;
- the culture is not whimsical in care;
- have high resistance to diseases and pests typical of tomatoes;
- high yield and taste of fruits
- Possibility of growing in greenhouse conditions and open ground.
All the advantages of the hybrid have already been appreciated by many gardeners and farmers. They are the ones who recommend growing President to beginners. With this hybrid it will not be difficult for them to start growing tall, early-ripening tomatoes.
Tomato growing technology
Our technology for growing tomatoes of different varieties is as follows. On our plot we allocate 6 long rows for tomatoes (including closed soil). On three of them, representatives of the best varieties of tomatoes, proven over the years, are grown (there are also tomatoes to choose from), guaranteeing a harvest according to the declared characteristics (regardless of the “delights” of the weather), and the other three are planted with new varieties, which are “considered” this way and that in during the above time. That seems to be it.
PS To make life easier for readers and reduce the time it takes to absorb the article, instead of determining the yield of vegetables in kg per 1 square meter, it will be written below - kg “per square”.
And now I am announcing the number of tomatoes tested in growing, presented below for your viewing, which can still be called the best - 60 varieties.
PS The results were recorded in an area that: with a good warm season, corresponds to the Central Black Earth region (region), and with a bad warm season, corresponds to the North-Western region. Naturally, this range of latitudes in which the above regions are located definitely includes Siberia, the Moscow region, the Middle Zone, the Urals, the Far East, and then figure out for yourself where exactly the paths lead to your site.

Recommendations and opinions of vegetable growers
Reviews from gardeners growing the Dorodny variety indicate the taste characteristics of ripe fruits, the high yield of the crop, and the possibility of growing in open and closed ground conditions.
“I purchased tomato seeds of the Dorodny variety by mail. During the growing process, the tomatoes fully confirmed the declared characteristics. The crop was grown using seedlings. The seeds were planted after treatment with an aqueous solution of potassium permanganate in a container with prepared soil.
After the formation of 2 true leaves, I planted them in separate peat pots. With them it is easier to transfer seedlings to a permanent place. Caring for seedlings was reduced to watering, fertilizing and additional lighting using an electric lamp. Before planting, I added compost to the holes and watered them with water to provide the root system with moisture.
The bushes were planted in open ground. During the entire growing season, a tall plant formed. I kept the bushes in one stem and periodically removed excess shoots. The variety pleased with its high yield. Some fruits reached a weight of 600 g. I consumed them fresh and used them to make paste.”
“A neighbor recommended a tomato of the Dorodny variety. I liked the taste of the raspberry-colored tomatoes, the high yield. Next season I will definitely plant more bushes from the collected seeds.”
Landing Features
Growing seedlings and their proper planting is an important condition for hybrid tomatoes.
If these conditions are met, the death of the plant is eliminated, the level of its survival, rooting, and subsequently high yields increases.
Learn about the intricacies of growing tomatoes in open ground, in a greenhouse, using the Maslov method, hydroponically, using the Terekhins’ method.
Deadlines
Seeds are planted in late February - early March. After 6 weeks after planting the seeds, the seedlings are planted in a permanent place. Direct sowing of seeds in greenhouse soil is carried out in early - mid-April.
In general, the process of planting tomatoes can be divided into several stages:
1. Seed preparation
Seeds must be properly prepared before planting. To do this, you first need to visually evaluate them and remove those that are unsuitable (moldy or with black spots).
Seeds that have passed the assessment must be disinfected in a weak (light pink) solution of potassium permanganate. Soak the seeds in the solution for at least 15 minutes. After disinfection, the seeds must be washed to remove any remaining solution under warm running water.
2. Planting seeds
Before planting, pre-prepared containers (boxes, pots) are filled with a mixture of soil and humus. The seeds are laid out on the soil mixture and sprinkled with a thin layer on top. Be sure to moisten the top soil with warm water from a spray bottle.
3. Picking seedlings
When the seeds are planted correctly, the first shoots appear after 2 weeks. When 2-4 full-fledged leaves are formed on the seedlings, you can start diving.
Important! Picking must be done carefully so as not to damage young shoots and weak roots.
Plants are planted in separate pre-prepared (filled and moistened) containers. These can be special pots purchased at a garden store with separate containers for seedlings or ordinary plastic cups.
After planting, for good rooting, you can fertilize with a small amount of mineral fertilizers.
4. Preparing seedlings
In advance (2 weeks) before planting in a permanent place, the seedlings must be hardened off. This process means airing the seedlings in the open air. The weather for ventilation should be warm and sunny.
Hardening begins at 2 hours, gradually increasing the time. The start time of hardening should fall within the period of plant development (4 weeks).
It takes 3.5 months from planting the seeds to the ripening of the first fruits.
Sowing scheme
The future yield of Blagovest tomatoes depends on the order, pattern and distance from each other when planting occurs.
So, for seedlings, seeds are laid out on the ground at a distance of 15 mm from each other, followed by picking them into separate prepared containers. Strengthened seedlings are planted in a permanent place when they reach one and a half months.
Did you know? You can significantly increase productivity by planting two tomato bushes in one hole and then combining them into one stem.
When sowing directly into greenhouse soil, the seeds are immediately sown in a checkerboard pattern at the same distance. With direct sowing on the ground, there is a possibility of subsequent thinning of seedlings.
Important! Practice has shown that planting seeds in open ground does not contribute to the maturation of the bush or gives too little yield.
The checkerboard planting pattern at a distance of 45-50 cm from each other provides sufficient space for the development and subsequent fruiting of Blagovest bushes.
Also, this scheme maintains a high level of aeration between the bushes, which creates unfavorable living conditions for pests and insects and reduces the likelihood of fungal diseases and rot.
The best varieties of tomatoes with descriptions
A mid-early, low-growing, productive tomato variety from the “Dwarf Tomato” project. The original name of the variety is Dwarf Desperado, author Blaine Horton. Translated into Russian - Desperate.
The plant is of a determinate type, standard, up to 60 cm high. It does not need to be pinched. The leaf is wrinkled, like most “gnomes”. We recommend for cultivation in open ground.
The fruits are heart-shaped, most have small edges on the side of the stalk. At the ripe stage, the tomatoes are pink-raspberry in color, weighing 70-150 grams, dense, of good taste. These tomatoes are long-lasting and transportable.
Advantages
- Resistance to major tomato diseases
- High yield
- Long-term fruiting
- Unpretentiousness
Productivity of the variety: up to 3 kg of fruits from 1 bush (subject to agricultural technology, watering and fertilizing).
In some catalogs this variety is called Desperado.
Before you accurately choose a variety or hybrid of tomatoes, you need to decide where exactly they will grow.
For open ground, low-growing varieties that will ripen early are more suitable. Mid-ripening species in good summer weather can produce a fairly good harvest, but they are susceptible to microflora, which can destroy most fruits.
It is customary to grow tall varieties and various hybrids in greenhouses. Here you can plant absolutely any tomatoes, even late-ripening ones.

Tomatoes are one of the most popular vegetable crops, so there is a huge variety of their varieties and hybrids suitable for growing in private households and small farms. One of the interesting varieties - the Lollipop tomato - with small, uniform fruits, is popular with many Russian vegetable growers. Let's consider the characteristics of the variety, its advantages and disadvantages, as well as the rules for growing seedlings, planting plants, caring for and harvesting fruits.
Description and characteristics of the variety
Lollipop tomatoes are early ripening, the fruits ripen 90-95 days after germination.
Suitable for growing both in greenhouse conditions and in garden beds.
Description of the variety:
- plant of semi-indeterminate type;
- the bush is not standard, 0.5-0.65 m high (when planted in greenhouses), and 1.2-1.5 m in open beds;
- leaf dark green, potato type;
- inflorescences of a simple type, formed with an interval of 2-3 leaves;
- each one bears 8-12 tomatoes;
- the fruits are red, small in size, plum-shaped or oval in shape;
- the tomato skin is thin, durable, and does not crack;
- the pulp is dense;
- the taste is excellent, sweet.
The yield of Lollipop tomatoes is up to 3 kg from each bush. The weight of 1 medium berry is 40-50 g. The use of the fruit is universal, that is, they can be eaten fresh, processed and canned, including in jars. In the photo below you can see what representatives of the variety look like.
Fruit characteristics
Description of the fruit: a small tomato, each fruit weighs about 40 grams. The fruits are round in shape, unripe - light green, ripe - red. In cross section they have two seed lobes. Up to 10 tomatoes will ripen on one bunch. When ripe, the stalk does not have a green spot. The taste is excellent, sweet and sour. Tomatoes are suitable for universal use.
Sowing and growing seedlings
The process of growing seedlings begins with sowing seeds. It is carried out 1.5-2 months before transplanting into a greenhouse or on beds (approximately in mid-March).
First, they sort out the seeding material, calibrate it, separating the best ones - large and full-bodied seedlings. To do this, they are poured into a cup of water, and after a while the liquid is drained along with the floating seeds. The remaining ones at the bottom are poured for 20 minutes. potassium permanganate solution. Afterwards, the seeds are washed with clean water, dried or germinated in a damp cloth until they hatch.
Seedlings are grown in pots. They are filled with soil mixture consisting of turf soil, peat, humus and coarse sand, taken in equal proportions. You can also use a universal substrate sold in stores. The seed sowing depth is 1-1.5 cm.
After planting, the pots are watered and transferred to a warm place (25˚C), with moderate lighting. After sprouting, the containers are moved to the brightest part of the room so that the sprouts do not begin to stretch. The temperature is also reduced slightly. The best option where you can place plants is a windowsill.
Seedlings are provided with lighting for 10-12 hours a day (fluorescent or phytolamps are used if necessary).
Water the seedlings with warm, settled water at a frequency sufficient to keep the soil moist. It is convenient to moisten the soil first with a spray bottle, then with a small watering can with a nozzle.
Fertilize Lollipop tomatoes with complex fertilizers every 2 weeks. During the last 10 days of growing plants at home, they are hardened off - taken out of the room into the air, first for half an hour, but every day the stay time is increased.
By the time of planting in beds or greenhouses, Lollipop tomato seedlings should have 2-3 pairs of leaves and be at least 10 cm high, but not more than 20 cm.
Agrotechnics of cultivation
Since tomato bushes are not tall, some gardeners grow them by planting seeds in the main growing area. This is possible in our climate zones, since the plants are resistant to cold weather.
But if grown by seedlings, the seeds are planted in early May on the windowsill. When two permanent leaves are formed, the seedlings are planted in separate pots and grown outside until it warms up.
When the daytime air temperature becomes stable and does not drop below 20 degrees, the seedlings are planted in the garden. The planting pattern is chosen to be 50x40 centimeters, placing up to 9 plants per square meter.

I. Hybrids
Hybrid tomatoes are virtually guaranteed to be resistant to diseases and bad weather conditions, which is something that non-hybrid varieties suffer from. Greenhouses and greenhouses are valued for storing heat, but in them tomatoes can suffer from too high temperatures and sudden temperature changes. In recent years, world selection has been aimed at producing “heat-resistant” hybrids with a reliable guarantee of ovary production.
Hybrids are especially helpful in a greenhouse or a small garden plot where there are no real opportunities for crop rotation and diseases are prevalent. Selection successes demonstrate confident resistance to various types of infections - viral (especially the most dangerous tobacco mosaic virus), fungal, bacterial. In addition, the hybrids have uniform fruits and consistently high yields.
Tomato Incas F1
One of the best hybrids for canning whole fruits without skin. Popular early high-yielding bush hybrid. The plant is medium-sized, compact.
Tomato from the Dutch company Numens, zoned in Russia; entered into the state register in 2000. Mid-early hybrid (105 days) of meter-high vegetables, determinate. Very high resistance to fungal diseases has been recorded. The fruits are 80-100 g, dense, bright red, pepper-shaped, fleshy, uniform, tolerate sunburn well, are very easy to ripen, transported over long distances without loss of quality.
Tomato Torquay F1
Dutch hybrid from Bejo Zaden; in the Russian register since 2007. Mid-season tomato (119-123 days from germination to ripening), bush type - determinate, maximum height 100 cm. Forms abundant multiple clusters with fruits weighing 60-140 g. Dense tomatoes withstand long-term transportation, excellent in pickling and pickling matters.
Tomato Mariana F1
The tomato was created in the French branch of the Japanese company Sakata (the image of the woman Mariana is a symbol of the French Republic). The breeders of this agricultural company are often suspected of producing GMOs, but so far without real evidence. Mariana is a mid-early determinate hybrid. The fruits are similar in shape to Incas - also elongated-oval, perfectly smooth, super dense.
Tomato Bagheera F1
Hybrid from the leading French seed company Cloz. Included in the Russian seed register in 2007.
Early high-yielding hybrids are a real boon for the garden. They are cold-resistant, do not need pinching or tying up, and practically do not get sick. The ripening period is marked as medium-early; determinate bush. The fruit is round, flattened on top, ribbed, weight ranges from 80-220 g. The hybrid is resistant to soil drought and nematode, more suitable for regions located in the south. Does not suffer from fusarium and verticillium wilt.
Tomato F1 Semko 2005
The tomato is suitable for open ground and under film shelters (greenhouses). Determinate, medium-sized, compact. Resistant to soil salinity, drought, high temperatures, grows well in open ground in both southern and northern regions. Vegetables practically do not suffer from viral and fungal diseases, even late blight.
Tomato F1 Semko 2010
Included in the state register in 2010. Ultra-early ripening determinate hybrid - 85-88 days pass from the sprouting of green vegetables to the coloring of fruits. The first brush is formed immediately after the sixth leaf grows. The fruits are incredibly dense for such an early tomato, and are by no means small - 130 g. The shape is round hearts with a beautiful pointed tip.
In open ground, we usually plant thickly - 5-6 bushes per square. The best harvest from such an area is at least a bucket. The hybrid is highly resistant to bacteria, fungi and viruses. Does not crack and does not suffer from blossom end rot. Successfully withstands high temperatures and dry soil.
The newest indeterminate hybrid (on the register since 2015) - tested by us, everything is fine - created taking into account all possible greenhouse disasters. Firstly, it sets well even in the heat, as well as during temperature changes. Secondly, it is tolerant of problematic soil substrates. Thirdly, it shows high resistance to viral, fungal and bacterial infections.
The yield of vegetables varies between 20-30 kg/1 square meter. Mid-early hybrid (100 days from green shoots). The clusters begin to form after 7-9 leaves, each bears 5-6 tomatoes in the shape of rounded hearts, smooth, beautiful, attractive orange color. The weight of the “heart” is 160-190 g. The pulp contains a high percentage of dry matter, sugars, and carotenoids.
Bushes of unlimited growth, with dense foliage. Mandatory shaping is required, including a garter. Hybrid of medium early or medium ripening period (112-118 days). Clusters of 6-8 tomatoes weighing 130-150 g. The fruits are plum-shaped, slightly tapering downwards. They are deep red in color, thick-skinned, with a high percentage of dry matter.
Tomato Empire F1
Indeterminate hybrid of a new generation, in the state register since 2011. Medium-early (100 days - 2 days - from germination). The plant is tall, much taller than other types of tomatoes. Therefore, the tomato requires gartering and pinching. Tomatoes are oval-shaped with a spout, weight ranges from 80 to 140 g. On average, 9 kg are obtained per bush. The color of the fruit is red-orange. The skin and pulp are dense. Can be stored for 6-7 weeks. In greenhouses people do not suffer from viral and fungal infections.
On the register since 2015. The bushes are semi-determinate, beautiful, a meter and a half high. Suitable for any soil - open or closed. Plants require pinching. Multiple clusters bear up to 30 fruits with a sweet taste and a perfect “strawberry” shape. Weight is typical for classic cherry tomatoes - 25 g.
Tomato F1 Kaspar
The bush is short, usually up to the first cluster, 60 cm. The fruits of the plants are cylindrical with a spout, the length varies around 11 cm, and the weight is 95-115 g. They are very dense, without juice. It is convenient to pickle them assorted with cucumbers of a similar size.
The average ripening period is 115 days. The hybrid is intended for open ground, or is planted under low shelters; We plant three to four vegetable bushes per square.
Tomato Aunt Valya F1
Valya f1 tomatoes are early-ripening, tall hybrids with average yield. The bushes easily and quickly reach a height of 200 cm. In the register since 2015. Productivity is within 20 kg per square meter. On average, one bush produces 7 kg of tasty and beautiful tomatoes. Tomatoes ripen simultaneously, reaching 200-250 g in weight.
The fruits have a regular round, slightly oblong shape. The scope of use of tomatoes is very wide. Salads are prepared from the first fruits. As the volume of the harvest increases, the fruits are used for winter harvesting, as well as juices, ketchups, pastes, sauces and lecho. Tomatoes retain commercial quality for a long time and tolerate transportation and long-term storage well.
Tomato "Yablonka Rossii" - an early ripening variety for open ground
“Apple Tree of Russia” is only slightly inferior in popularity to the “Sanka” variety. To some extent, these are competing varieties - both were created for open ground, both are early ripening and both give a good harvest for open ground. True, in my opinion, “Sanka” tastes better. However, first things first.
The tomato variety “Yablonka Rossii” was bred by it is not entirely clear who. The list of authors includes the name of Vladislav Korochkin, the president of the group, but it is unlikely that he himself was involved in selection work. Viktor Anatolyevich Vasilevsky from the All-Russian Research Institute of Selection and Seed Production of Vegetable Crops and other specialists are also mentioned among the co-authors. The originator of the variety is NK LTD, which is directly related to the Russian Vegetable Garden.
The variety was registered in the Register in 2000. It also went on sale around the same time.
In the 90s, the Tamina tomato variety, which was quite similar in appearance to YAR, was quite popular. Sometimes both names are indicated on seed packets. In the Register, however, the Tamina tomato variety is not mentioned anywhere.

Description
“Yablonka Rossii” is a determinate, medium-growing variety. The height of the bush is usually about a meter or a little more, but in greenhouses some amateur gardeners have it. This is a standard tomato: “Apple tree” forms a fairly compact bush with a thick stem and medium-sized “potato” leaves. The tomato, of course, needs to be tied up, but it’s quite late.
The first inflorescence is laid over 7-9 leaves, the subsequent ones - after 2 leaves. Inflorescences can be simple or intermediate (with one branch), the stalk with an articulation.
Tomatoes “Yablonka Rossii” are round, with a smooth surface, weighing up to 80 grams. Unripe tomatoes are light green, ripe ones are deep red. Nest with seeds. The taste is good. Recommended for use for whole-fruit canning, but also suitable for salads and for processing into pastes.
Features of cultivation
The “Yablonka Rossii” tomato is approved for cultivation in all regions of the Russian Federation as a variety for open ground. I grew it in 2015 and plan to grow it in 2022. It is a fairly unpretentious and stable variety.
The 60 x 50 planting scheme worked well. I fully formed some plants into three stems, and some I didn’t plant at all. There were only a few specimens in each group: therefore, unambiguous conclusions cannot be drawn, but in general, the non-stepchildren seemed to me more productive. By the end of August, absolutely all the tomatoes had time to ripen, but August 2015 was very hot.
The variety is early ripening - ripening begins approximately 90 days after emergence, even in open ground. Probably, in a greenhouse you can get a harvest even earlier.
The register states that the variety is characterized by uniform ripening of fruits, but for me the fruiting and ripening were rather extended. Productivity according to the register is 5.3...5.6 kg/m2. I didn’t document the yield on my bushes, but I feel like each plant produced at least 2 kg of marketable tomatoes. In terms of per square meter this will give more than 6 kg.
Advantages
- possibility of growing in open ground;
- ease of cultivation;
- early ripening;
- uniformity of tomatoes in size;
- relatively high yield.
II. Indeterminate varieties (unlimited growth)
These are tomatoes that will grow until they turn blue until the owner or the onset of the cold season stops them. They have great yield potential, which is more successfully realized in high greenhouses. We place approximately three bushes on 1 square. With supports such as strong trellises, open ground is not prohibited, which will be especially welcome in the southern regions.
Tomato Scarlet candles
Good for pickling, sweet. This is a patented mid-early variety (Siberian breeders distinguished themselves!). In the state register since 2007. They are characterized by a high ability to form ovaries in any conditions. From 1 sq.m you can actually get a bucket and a half. The clusters are arranged in tiers, the weight of the fruit on the lower branches reaches 120 g, on the top ones - half as much.
Very lightweight. A mid-early Siberian variety for canning whole vegetables. The fruits are elongated, reaching (maximum in our conditions) 13-14 cm in length, weighing about 120 g, and have a beautiful crimson hue. They have few seeds, are very fleshy, strong, and easy to keep. If they are picked green, they do not spoil and ripen perfectly. The variety is very responsive to high-quality fertilizing.

A new product of Siberian selection. It begins to ripen already on the 110th (you can add a couple more) days from the sprouts appearing on the surface of the soil. Fruits have a unique length - 20 cm (specific size)! They are very elongated, with a small pear-shaped constriction in the upper part, uniformly slightly expanding downwards, with a spout.
High yield
The variety is productive and unpretentious. Tolerates slight shading. It ties well. Neither high nor low temperatures are scary. It succeeds in protected soil, but outdoor cultivation is not prohibited. Tomatoes begin to ripen in 106-113 days; at the same time, the plant successfully continues to grow and form clusters - up to 10 pieces per bush.
Each bears up to eight graceful fruits - cylindrical and pointed, in full ripeness - iridescent pink in color. The weight of each vegetable is 100-120 g. They contain a high percentage of sugars and dry matter. They do not burst when pickled, are good for drying, obtaining thick juice and, oddly enough in your opinion, for making tomato jam. With diligent care, the bush can bear up to a bucket of quality fruit.
Tomato Niagara
Weighty brushes
This mid-early vegetable variety has been on the state register since 2010. The bush is tall, but compact in width. It has a highly branched root system, responsive to increased nutrition and good water supply. A valuable feature of this Siberian variety is its multiple clusters, each of which bears up to 14 fruits weighing 85-115 g.
Meaty and sweet
This is one of the sweetest and meatiest products of Siberian breeders. It has been registered in the state register since 2007. The tomato is mid-season (116-118 days from the appearance of sprouts), with large foliage. The fruits resemble long, sharp peppers - they grow up to 15 cm. They are an elegant red color, the weight ranges from 120-185 g. The pulp of vegetables contains very little water and seeds. In the best case, there are up to a dozen fruits in one cluster. One bush gives 2-3 kg.
Tomato Koenigsberg
Excellent ovary
Included in the state register in 2005. The variety rightfully takes its place among the most productive Siberian varieties (up to 20 kg per square meter of land in a greenhouse). It sets perfectly even in the hot atmosphere of closed ground. Plants with a powerful bush with large leaves require increased nutrition and careful pinching.
The first ovary is formed after the growth of the 12th leaf, then inflorescences are formed every 3 leaves. Refers to varieties of medium ripening; in Siberian conditions, approximately half of the crop ripens; the rest of the fruits turn red quite well when ripened. Tomatoes in the lower clusters of vegetables weigh 300 g, and in those above - no less than 150 g. The shape is elongated, heart-shaped, smooth, and beautiful.
Vitamin and sweet
Ripe tomatoes have a golden-orange color and contain a record amount of carotene vitamins. The pulp is sweet and aromatic, like berries and fruits. The ripening period is average. The lower fruits are capable of filling up to a mass of 400-450 g, higher up the bush - 200-300 g. They are oval, often with a spout. The plants grow clusters through the leaves, each containing on average, as stated, up to 5 fruits. Productivity is high. The keeping quality is excellent. It is especially tasty when salted with gelatin.
Harvest hearts
Close internodes and a powerful trunk with dense foliage are like standard varieties, only the height is two meters. The Siberian breeding novelty produces half a bucket of fruit from one such “tree”. Ripening begins on the 115th day. Forms up to 6 beautiful clusters with 5-7 red tomatoes weighing 200-250 grams, shaped like strawberries.
Tomato Budenovka
Resistant to cracking
The variety is an improved version of Ox Heart, with a higher yield (about 9.4 kg per square), early ripening, good resistance to diseases (even to late blight) and cracking of the apical tissue of the fruit for a fleshy variety. Heart-shaped, ribbed tomatoes with excellent taste.
Record weight
The variety is a new product from a team of breeding scientists under the leadership of V.F. Gavrisha. Registered in the state register in 2015. Due to the unrealistically large fruits of vegetables, it is included in the “Russian Hero” series. The variety is not very fast in terms of ripening time (from 120 days), therefore it requires early planting of seedlings, especially careful pinching and decent feeding.
In Siberia and Central Russia it works well only in closed ground conditions, including a greenhouse. The average return from a bush is 3.6 (plus or minus) kg, the record is 7 kg. The tomatoes are flat-round, slightly ribbed, have an excellent smell and are very juicy, each weighing 400-600 g, not uncommon - 800 g. There are 2-3 tomatoes in one cluster of plants; if you leave only one tomato in it, it can pull more than 1 kg. Such “bogatyrs” are better suited for salads and distillation for juice.
Bowl of salad from one fruit
One of the best salad novelties, the yield is high. The plant bears 5-6 racemes. The fruits look very attractive due to their raspberry-pink color, large up to 500-800 g. The tomatoes are flat-round, ribbed, sweet. There is high resistance to cracking; The pulp density is average. A rare quality for large-fruited varieties: the fruits do not tend to quickly soften and spoil during storage.
According to the ripening period, the variety is classified as mid-early and mid-ripe. Perfect for preparing preparations: tomato paste, juice. This tomato variety is characterized by high yield. You can remove up to 5-6 kilograms of tomatoes from one bush.
Giant orange sweet
It has plasticity, rare for a large-fruited variety, and relative unpretentiousness. Delicate sweet pulp combines with excellent keeping quality. The tomatoes are round-flat (their “ribs” stand out a little), sunny orange in color. The average weight of a tomato is 0.5 kg, but in reality there are 1 kg of fruit on the bush.
Tomato Honey Drop
Sweet babes
Tomatoes from the “cherry” group, original in shape and color. Golden-yellow “pears” weight 30 g. Potato-type foliage, the bush of the plant is incredibly branched: stepsons strive to grow even at the ends of the flower racemes. But in the greenhouse you still need to remove the branches (at least partially), otherwise you will end up with a jungle.
Plum sweets
A modern variety of breeders under the leadership of V.F. Gavrisha, a new product in the group of cherry tomatoes - the Monisto series. The year of entry into the state register is 2015. First harvest on the 115th day. The tomatoes are oval, weighing 25-40 g, collected in clusters of 30 pieces. The variety is the most unusual in color among tomatoes. It has fruits of a brown-burgundy hue, with a specific set of vitamins and an original taste.
Characteristics of the variety
The plant has an indeterminate type; it grows up to two meters if grown in a film greenhouse. In open beds, the height of the bush is about one and a half meters. The variety is mid-season - the period from seed germination to the formation of tomatoes ranges from 105 to 110 days. The leaves are medium-sized, the bushes need to be tied up and pinched so that all the strength of the plant does not go into the growth of green mass.
Gardeners describe the harvest as follows:
- The fruits are large, their weight is 120-600 g.
- Tomatoes have a characteristic red color, unripe fruits are green, and ripe ones have a green spot near the stalk.
- The fruits have a pleasant taste, sweetish, not sour.
The yield is average - up to five kilograms of tomatoes can be harvested from each square meter.
The fruits of this variety are most often used for making salads. However, in addition to this, pastes and drinks are prepared from them.

- A large amount of harvest per 1 sq. m.
- Remarkable immunity to diseases and pests.
- Average ripening time.
- It is perfectly stored raw for a long time.
These tomatoes are easy to grow. Even beginners can cope with this task.
This is a very rare variety that was developed relatively recently. The growth of its stems is unlimited. But the fruiting branches themselves can be up to two and a half meters long. It is very difficult to get it; many gardeners purchase it only through foreign websites. It is rare to find such a rare species in Russia.
Fruits appear on the branches on both sides. The variety is considered very early ripening; no more than 80 days can pass from the moment of planting the seedlings and receiving the fruit. Tomatoes are medium-sized, smooth and smooth skin. The variety was bred for germination in greenhouses, but you can grow it on your balcony if you wish. There are a lot of fruits born on each vine.
The pulp is quite juicy and has a sweetish taste. The fruits are perfect for both canning and eating raw. But it is worth noting that it will not be possible to store it for a long time without any processing.
For good fruiting, the Rapunzel variety requires:
- Plenty of sunshine.
- Low acidity of the soil.
- Supports and garters for bushes.
- Regular watering and fertilizing.
The most comfortable temperature for germination of this variety should be approximately 22-28 degrees.
Such tomatoes were also bred relatively recently by breeders. But nevertheless, he was very fond of many gardeners. It has earned such fame for its excellent properties to withstand any bad weather. The bushes are tall. Plants begin to sing approximately 100-105 days from the day of planting.
There is a lot of greenery growing on the bushes. Their color scheme is dark green. Tomatoes are tied on the brush. Brushes are formed along the entire length of the branches. The shape of the tomatoes is flat and round. The skin structure is smooth with a glossy shine. The weight of the largest fruit can reach up to 0.5 kg.
The litter got its name because of the unusual coloring of the unripe fruits. Its fruits have a greenish-yellow hue. They have juicy pulp with an unusual taste. According to reviews, such fruits are somewhat reminiscent of the taste of melon or other exotic fruits. They don't last long, so it's best to recycle them.

How to grow tomatoes on a windowsill. Choosing a variety and care
It smelled like spring! Snowdrifts have floated outside the window and the minus is retreating under the onslaught of the warm sun. The weather itself gives summer residents the green light. Sometimes even the most hardened city dwellers want to get their own harvest in a stuffy metropolis.
Mobile vegetable gardens on balconies have been a real trend in recent years.
Moreover, even tomatoes take root well in apartment mini-beds! Consulting agronomist Vasily Opimakh told specifically for AGRONEWS how to grow tomatoes on a windowsill and harvest a fragrant harvest all year round.
Tomatoes for the “lazy”
Where to start planting tomatoes? With the right variety - the pros answer. Whatever one may say, the conditions for growing vegetables at home and in the garden beds are still different: temperature, pollination, light and many other factors. Science and breeders do not stand still: demand creates supply.
On store shelves there are dozens of varieties of tomatoes with different parameters: fruit color, shape, ripening time. The abundance of assortment makes your eyes wide open. Standard, ampelous, determinant - these terms cause, to put it mildly, slight bewilderment among “newly-minted” gardeners.
How not to get lost among indoor tomatoes and choose what suits you? A short guide to the most popular varieties from our expert.
— For a home greenhouse, for example, low-growing dwarf varieties are suitable. Tomato roots need room. The advantage of such “indoor” species is that they are unpretentious and are able to survive in cramped conditions. Therefore, they will tolerate compacted planting without any problems. Their unconditional advantage is very early and friendly maturation. But don't expect a rich harvest from these plants.
Keep in mind that the height of low-growing varieties, as a rule, reaches 30-70 cm. But with excess nutrition (especially with one-sided nitrogen nutrition), even such tomatoes can grow more than a meter.
Standard grade is another item that can be seen on the packaging. Simply put, these are plants with a strong, low stem and a compact crown. They don't have to be tied up or pinched.
These tomatoes are unpretentious: the roots are located close to the surface and absorb nutrients and moisture well. Standard varieties are suitable for those who do not want to mess with plants.
By the way, they are called “tomatoes for the lazy.”
Hanging (or hanging) tomatoes are also popular. They are bred for hanging pots or flowerpots. They are distinguished by flexible, flowing shoots. Such bushes also perform an aesthetic function. They look like flowers, but instead of buds there are real fragrant tomatoes.
But if you see the name “indeterminate” variety on the packaging, you should know that these are tall tomatoes that are usually planted in greenhouses. They are not suitable for a windowsill - there will not be enough space for the plants.
- If there is space on the balcony, you can sow almost all varieties - low-growing and tall. If the conditions are cramped, it is better to focus on miniature bushes. For example:
“Room surprise” - gardeners dubbed it a super early variety. The first tomatoes begin to turn red already on the 75th day after emergence. The height of the bush is up to 50 cm. The yield is one of the highest among indoor varieties - up to 3 kg per bush. This variety is popular even among those who first decided to grow tomatoes indoors.
“Balcony Bonsai” is an early ripening variety that is unpretentious to light. Ripens in 85 days. But the yield is not the highest - 0.5 kg, although the fruits are tasty and sweet.
“Balcony miracle” is a standard plant about half a meter high. Refers to the lack of light with “understanding”. The tomatoes are round, red, weighing 70-100 g. This variety begins to bear fruit 85-90 days after germination. Each bush can produce up to 2 kg of harvest.
“Pinocchio” is a potted tomato variety that is grown outdoors in summer and in the window in winter. The bushes are very small - 30 cm, with small tomatoes - 20 g. From one plant you can collect 1-1.5 kg of fruit.
"Little Red Riding Hood" is an early ripening variety. No more than 90 days pass from the emergence of seedlings to the ripening of the fruit. The plant does not require the removal of stepsons and is resistant to temperature swings. The color of tomatoes is red. Bush height - 40-60 cm.
You can also pay attention to “Garden Pearl” (ampel variety), “Golden Bunch”, “Citizen F1”. In any case, before purchasing, read the instructions carefully.
ON A NOTE! A tomato can bear fruit for up to 5 years, but the plant produces the richest harvest in the first 2 years .
Pre-sowing seed preparation - only the strongest will survive
Home tomatoes are grown in the same way as outdoor tomatoes - through seedlings. Experienced gardeners always carry out pre-sowing preparation: they check the seeds for germination, disinfect and germinate. This gives you a higher chance of getting strong and healthy plants.
- First, the seeds need to be sorted - to calculate the “dummies”. To do this, immerse them in salted water for 5-7 minutes (30 g of salt per liter of water). Those that surfaced were defective, and those that sank were our “clients.” We rinse them from salt and gently dry them on a clean cloth or sheet of paper. Disinfection will also not be superfluous.
To keep the seedlings strong and pain-free, place the seeds in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for 20 minutes, and then treat them with a growth stimulator. Another point in preparation for “earth work” is germination. To do this, wrap the seeds in a damp cloth and leave them in a warm place until they hatch. The fabric must be moistened periodically.
It will take 3-6 days.
IMPORTANT! If the manufacturer has applied a special protective and stimulating film to the seeds, they cannot be soaked or treated, because the useful layer will be washed off. Such pelleted or encrusted seeds are sown in well-moistened soil so that the shell dissolves.
Soil selection
Tomatoes need loose and nutritious soil. Soil acidity should be between 5.5 and 6.5. If the pH is higher than normal, the seedlings will wither and become sick. You can buy soil in a store; as a rule, it already contains all the necessary nutrients. If this is not possible, prepare the composition yourself. Vasily Opimakh will tell you how.
— You can use this recipe: 5 parts of garden soil and the same amount of rotted compost, 2 parts of sand and 1 part of peat. A little ash and a few grams of phosphorus fertilizers are added to them for the full development of the stem and root system. Please note that if you prepare the soil yourself, be sure to disinfect it.
Soil cultivation allows you to destroy pathogenic bacteria, insect eggs, fungal spores, and protects seedlings from blackleg (a common disease of young plants).
The soil is disinfected in several ways: you can calcinate it in an oven preheated to 90 degrees or, for example, spill it with potassium permanganate (3-5 g of crystals are diluted with 10 liters of water).
Sowing seeds
Sow indoor tomatoes in the same way as ground tomatoes. Any container is suitable for seedlings: a pot, a common container, individual cassettes or peat tablets. Dry seeds are placed 2-3 pieces in a glass; after germination, weak shoots can be removed. And if the seeds are germinated, they are sent into the ground one at a time.
— Fill the container 2/3 with soil and moisten well. Place the seeds at a distance of 1-2 cm from each other. Deepen by 1.5 cm, but no more, otherwise they will take a long time to germinate. Then they need to be sprinkled with a thin layer of soil and lightly compacted. Then cover with film or a plastic bag and place in a warm place. This is a kind of home greenhouse.
Periodically, the greenhouse needs to be ventilated or several small holes must be made in the film to prevent condensation from accumulating. The optimal temperature for seedlings at this stage of growth is 22 - 24 degrees Celsius. When the seeds germinate, remove the film and place it on the windowsill, and lower the temperature to +20. Water the seedlings as the top layer of soil dries out.
And do not overwater, otherwise mold may appear.
Great Migration
About a month after sowing, a couple of true leaves will appear on the plants. This is the signal to move. Tomatoes need to be replanted in large containers.
These can be buckets, pots, wooden or plastic boxes. The seedlings are distributed into separate flowerpots or planted several in one, the main thing is that there is room for the plants.
However, according to the expert, one tomato will need about 3-5 liters of soil.
- It is important that there is approximately 30-35 cm between plants. This way they will receive enough light, moisture and fertilizer. The day before transplanting, water the soil well. It is easier to remove a seedling from damp soil without damaging the roots.
If the container is plastic, then you need to make holes in it to drain excess water, plus this way the roots will be better enriched with oxygen. Place a layer of expanded clay at the bottom of the pot to prevent moisture from stagnating. Pour soil into the container, place our tomatoes and sprinkle with soil.
The plant needs to be deepened by 2-3 cm (to the cotyledon leaves). After transplanting, water thoroughly.
Get out of the shade or climate control for tomatoes
Tomatoes love light! This is a truism. Therefore, it is better to sow them no earlier than March-April. Because with a lack of sun, the stem will begin to stretch and develop poorly.
If you want to get the harvest earlier, you can’t do without a phytolamp. For full growth, tomatoes must be exposed to light for at least 10-12 hours.
Vasily Opimakh explains that you can understand that seedlings are “disliked” by the sun by several signs: the seedlings look frail and elongated.
— Pots with seedlings and mature bushes are best placed on south or south-east windows and rotated 180 degrees once a day. This is necessary so that the tomatoes are even, since plants tend to bend towards the light.
At the same time, they must be protected from scorching rays. Burns on the leaves can ruin your harvest. To do this, you can “tint” the glass with gauze: the room will not be so hot, and the plants will become more comfortable.
It is not recommended to grow light-loving tomatoes on northern windows.
Correct temperature conditions are the key to normal growth of tomatoes. The optimal degree is +22…+25 during the day and +15…+17 at night. In the cold season, when the radiators “fire” at full capacity, to protect the leaves from hot air, the heating devices should be covered with something. But in the summer you can take your pets out into the fresh air or onto the balcony.
Water treatments
There must be balance in everything. Especially when it comes to watering tomatoes. They do not tolerate drought - the ovary and fruits may crumble due to lack of moisture. The surest sign that it’s time to take up the watering can is dry soil. But overwatering tomatoes does not bode well: the plant may develop blackleg or late blight.
— Tomatoes need to be watered depending on their age and time of year. In the first month of the plant’s life, the soil must be moistened every day. Then you can water less often, but more abundantly.
If the temperature conditions and normal air humidity (80%) are observed, it is enough to carry out the procedure once every 5-7 days. It is important that the water is warm and settled.
On particularly hot summer days or if the air at home is very dry, spraying can help. This manipulation should not be carried out when the tomatoes are blooming.
Feeding tomatoes
Another important point in caring for tomatoes is feeding. We need to feed our plants with such a vitamin cocktail when 5-6 leaves appear on the stem, always at the beginning of flowering and during fruit set. The expert advises applying fertilizer throughout the life of the plants, approximately once every 10-14 days.
— During growth, tomatoes need nitrogen fertilizer, and during the formation and ripening of the fruit, they need potassium fertilizer. The easiest option for fertilizing is organic fertilizers. Manure should be diluted in water at a concentration of 2 tablespoons per liter of water. Ash can be sprinkled on the ground around the stem, or a solution can be prepared - 1 teaspoon per liter of water.
Manure activates plant growth and flower formation, and ash is responsible for the formation of ovaries, growth and ripening of fruits. Tomatoes should be fed once every two weeks. To avoid burning the roots, the plant must first be watered with clean water, and only then with the solution. You can also use mineral fertilizers. In 1 liter you need to dilute 2 g of potassium sulfate, 2 g.
urea and 6 gr. superphosphate.
On a note! Tomatoes do not require artificial pollination, but for better setting, you can lightly tap the stem several times a week, shaking the flower brushes.
Advantages of the variety
Owners of summer cottages and vegetable gardens generally speak positively about this type of tomato, and among the positive characteristics they highlight the following:
- strong bushes with powerful roots;
- the variety has good disease resistance;
- tomatoes have excellent taste;
- the resulting harvest is well transported and stored for a long time;
- large tomatoes;
- used for preparing sauces, ketchups, tomato juice;
- It is possible to grow both in open beds and in greenhouses.
Tomato “Sweet date F1”
This is where I get a little lost. I bought the mixture “Sweet Date F1”. More precisely, I wrote it out. Directly from them. The raspberry, red and yellow ones turned out to be date-shaped, sweet, and had a pleasant taste. But the orange ones grew into balls, and the taste literally shocked me!
In terms of weight, they are all approximately the same, 20 grams - for children, for one bite. They grow in clusters of about a dozen or a little more in each cluster; the cluster does not mature at the same time (or are we in such a hurry to eat it?). They fly away like seeds.
Indeterminates are stated to be about 2 meters. We were planted next to a 2-meter felt cherry tree, which in the spring developed “pockets” and left us without a harvest. So, “Sweet Dates,” left unattended for two weeks, outgrew the 1.5-meter supports and climbed onto the cherry tree. It looked amazing - a cherry bush mixed with tomato leaves, strewn with clusters of multi-colored fruits. That is, their height was actually more than 2 meters.
Medium late, ripen 3 months after germination and bear fruit until frost. In the conditions of August typhoon rains in the Khabarovsk Territory, the skin sometimes bursts. This is in open ground. The plants themselves are healthy and grow very vigorously. When space allows, not a stepchild, they grow as they want and bear fruit well on all stepchildren.
I left these orange “date” balls for seeds and grew them until we left for Kuban. The seeds were lost during a move (one move = two fires). This is the third year I have been buying new mixtures. Alas! There are no orange balls in the new mixtures - they are all date-shaped. Definitely sweet, tasseled, beautiful, very good with their multi-colored tassels. But there are no balloons... By the way, there are no typhoon rains in Kuban and tomatoes don’t burst.
Tips for growing and caring
The Parodist tomato can be grown perfectly in almost any part of Russia. It withstands stressful weather conditions and can produce a normal harvest even in cold summers.
The cultivation method largely depends on the specific region. The variety has the best performance under conditions of greenhouse development. As an option - greenhouse. Planting method: seedlings.
To get as many high-quality bushes for replanting as possible, you need to:
- Plant planting material 1.5 cm deep into the soil;
- Maintain systematic watering;
- Keep the temperature within 25 degrees;
- Plant seeds in a well-lit area of the greenhouse;
- Provide preliminary “hardening” 7 days before transplanting into the ground.
Parodist is a rather unpretentious variety. It can sit close to each other. For 1 sq.m. You can plant up to 10 bushes. The optimal planting pattern is 50 by 50 cm. For normal development, the plantings must be loosened, watered, fertilized, and weeded in a timely manner.
