Carrot
, unlike many vegetable crops, are never grown as seedlings. This crop is sown only in open ground. There are several nuances and difficulties when growing carrots that are useful to learn about before you start planting them.
Many varieties of this garden crop can be stored fresh for a long period without losing their beneficial properties. Growing carrots and caring for them involves certain features. At first glance, this process may seem quite simple, but carrots are one of the tricky vegetables. If you do not provide it with the proper conditions, you can forget about harvesting a generous harvest in the form of juicy fruits. As a result, root crops may grow that will only be suitable for feeding animals. How to care for carrots in open ground and how to properly prepare seeds for planting? Let's figure it out.
When to plant carrots in 2022?
It is best to plant carrots in 2022 according to the lunar calendar, taking into account favorable days. It is worth considering the following factors: the region in which the work is carried out, the variety of carrots, weather conditions in the spring. Sow both in spring and autumn, unless the temperature drops very much in winter. Some people use both options to get fresh carrots from the garden longer.
The exact timing of planting carrots in the spring is determined depending on the climatic conditions of your zone. As a rule, the main guideline is warming the soil to a depth of 10 cm. This can be determined as follows. A small area is dug up using a full bayonet of a shovel. A lump of soil is taken from the depths and its temperature is determined by touch. If you feel cold, you should not sow. The soil for planting must warm up, not lower than +8, and the daytime temperature is preferably + 15 degrees. Usually this is from mid-April to mid-May.
As mentioned above, more favorable ambient air and soil temperatures at later planting dates have a good effect on the emergence of rapid seedlings. Therefore, a difference of 2 weeks does not matter, and in some cases, a later planting time, on the contrary, has a number of advantages. Such entrances develop faster and gain vegetative mass of green tops.
Depending on region and climate
To select the optimal timing for sowing carrots in the spring in different regions, it is recommended to focus on weather conditions (climatic features).
Thus, in the south of Russia, carrots are sown in the ground much earlier than in the central zone (Moscow region), the North-West (Leningrad region), and even more so in the Urals and Siberia.
- For example, carrots are sown in open ground in the south of Russia
almost immediately after the snow melts, that is, already in the second half of March and early April. - In the central zone (Moscow region),
sowing is recommended to be done in late April-early May. - In the Urals and Siberia,
work on sowing carrots should be carried out no earlier than May. Around the same time, carrots were also planted in the North-West (in the Leningrad region).
To obtain the earliest harvest, carrots are planted in the fall before winter or in early spring (April). But for the purpose of long-term storage, this is usually done later, i.e. somewhere in May-early June.
