Volgograd gardeners shared their secrets of caring for strawberries

When are strawberries ripe?

The first strawberry harvest was collected this year on June 18 in the amount of 14 berries. On June 19, we picked a few more berries - about 5 pieces. The taste is excellent, not like the purchased “rubber” berries in supermarkets for 150 rubles/kg. Not very large, but sweet strawberries with a slight sour aftertaste literally melt in your mouth.

In general, it should be noted that strawberries and their wild sister, wild strawberries, have been very successful this year. At the dacha, the bushes are not only covered from head to toe with green berries, but also partially with flowers.

On the morning of June 18, I went fishing to a small forest river in the Tver region - the Darkness. While moving along the coast, it was impossible not to notice continuous fields with faded strawberry bushes covered with unripe berries. By the end of June - beginning of July they will fully reach and ripen. I think similarly there should be a lot of strawberries in the forests this season. So be sure to go to the forest on the weekend of July 2 and 3 for these fragrant wild berries.

I would also note that most of the bushes on our site are remontant, which means they will produce a harvest during the summer.

Harvesters for harvesting

Convenient harvester-harvesters designed for harvesting can be purchased in specialized stores for gardeners and vegetable gardeners. They greatly simplify and speed up fruit harvesting.

There are two types of berry harvesters:

  • Manual - primitive devices. Outwardly, they resemble a small box with “teeth”, with the help of which berries are picked from a branch.
  • Mechanical - the principle of operation of such devices is reminiscent of a grain harvester with a fully automated fruit harvesting process. Most often, such devices are used on large farms with large-scale berry plantations.

When choosing a small hand harvester from a gardening store, you need to pay attention to the size of the tines. For strawberries that are small in size, devices with gaps of up to 6 mm between the cloves are best suited. Such harvesters will pass through leaves and branches well, “collecting” the berries in a box.

To harvest strawberries, you cannot use devices with too many teeth, as they cause serious damage to the desired bushes, reducing their yield for several years. That is why such harvesters are considered poaching, and their use is punishable by fines.

Time and timing when strawberries ripen

The conditions of the climatic zone play a decisive role in the timing of strawberry ripening. In central Russia, it is harvested in the second ten days of June, but early varieties can ripen at the beginning of the month. In the Siberian regions this deadline is 2-3 weeks late. In the southern regions, the berries ripen by the end of May.

Strawberry ripening time

In order for strawberry beds to easily overwinter , it is better to plant seedlings in July and August, but it is possible in September depending on the weather. At this time she will have time to settle down well. If this period was missed for planting, it can be done in mid-April, preferably under film, and you can get the harvest even a little earlier than expected.

The ripening time from the beginning of flowering and pollination of flowers is usually four to five weeks. Weather conditions and quality of care play a decisive role. In warm weather, ripening occurs faster.

Strawberry berry close up

According to the duration of fruiting, strawberries are divided into ordinary, with the berries ripening once per season, and remontant, producing a harvest from May to September-October.

Ordinary varieties

Ordinary strawberry varieties are classified according to ripening time as follows:

  • Early. Popular species are Kimberly (Germany), Clery, Olvia, Zarya, Honey, Anita (Italy), Czech beauty, Alba. Proper care and favorable weather are the key to the fact that fruiting begins in the second - third ten days of May,
  • Medium early. Stand out - Stolichnaya, Elsanta, Korona (Holland), Festivalnaya, Krasny Bereg (Belarus), Ellis (England). The fruiting period in mid-early species shifts by an average of a week compared to early,
  • Medium late. These include Present, Queen, Gigantella, Nightingale, Polka, Asia, Arosa. They bear fruit another week later,
  • Late. There aren't very many of them. Famous ones - Malvina, Tarusa, Chamora, Adria (Italy), Pegasus are the last to ripen.

Remontant varieties

Remontant varieties of strawberries are increasingly leading the way in gardens and household plots. They are remarkable for their ability to flower and bear fruit multiple times within one season. Plants produce 15 times more inflorescences than ordinary ones; they yield 2-3 times during the growing season. The convenience of growing is that it practically does not produce a mustache.

Berry ripening occurs in waves. The first batch of the harvest is harvested in June, the second stage of berry ripening begins in the early ten days of July. In mid-August you can harvest for the third time. Fruiting continues until frost occurs.

Favorite types of remontant strawberries are Queen Elizabeth, Uralochka, Charlotte, Brighton, Lyubava, Primadonna, Tribute, Albion.

Remontant varieties are divided into long daylight (dns) and neutral daylight (NDD). They have different berry ripening times. To ensure continuous fruiting, it is recommended to plant both of these species.

How to speed up the ripening time of strawberries in open ground?

What methods exist to speed up the ripening of berries. To speed up the ripening of berries in open ground, gardeners recommend some simple techniques:

1The most common is growing under a cover made of non-woven material - spunbond on a frame made of arcs. You can arrange such a shelter in early spring, when the air temperature is stable above -5 degrees. In the middle zone this is the end of March - beginning of April.

It is permissible to simply cover the plantings with agrofibre without a frame in a spread , but the disadvantage is the lack of ventilation.

Strawberry bush close up

The method of mulching the rows with lutrasil or black film will speed up the process of berry ripening and soil warming. The spring sun will warm the soil faster and create conditions for the start of plant growth. This technique will speed up the harvest 6 days earlier than usual.

Later, when the ground thaws, you need to cut off all the old leaves with pruning shears. To protect plants from spider mites, pour the middle of the bushes with hot water at a temperature of 60-65 degrees. Sprinkle the beds with ash and loosen them to a depth of about 3 cm. Mulch with humus. Then cover the plantings again with light non-woven material stretched over the arcs. During the day, when the bushes are flowering, the covers must be removed to pollinate the flowers. The ripening period of berries in this case will be shorter by 1-2 weeks.

It must be remembered that the earliest varieties are most suitable for obtaining early berries: Zarya, Alba, Honey, Clery, Kimberly and others.

The method of growing strawberries in greenhouses is effective, but it is quite expensive.

To obtain an early harvest, additional stimulation of fruiting in the form of fertilizing and protective treatments against pests and fungal diseases are necessary. The list of basic agrotechnical requirements also includes the removal of old leaves, regular watering, weed control, and loosening of rows.

Conclusion

In central Russia, gardeners grow a considerable number of strawberry varieties of domestic and foreign selection. Today there are more than 64 varieties in the State Register. Among other characteristics, they differ from each other in the timing of berry ripening.

Planting several varieties on a plot will extend the period of eating tasty and healthy berries.

The result of the labor expended will be a good harvest!

Mulching strawberry beds

If you are really determined to get an excellent strawberry harvest, you cannot do without mulching your beds. This most important technique allows you to solve two problems at once: get rid of weeds that take water away from the berries, and keep the soil dry and loose in any weather. In addition, your berries will remain clean and dry until harvest. Mulching is especially important if you do not have the opportunity to monitor the condition of the beds daily.

You need to mulch the beds after thoroughly loosening them and applying fertilizers. As mulch, you can use film, non-woven materials, chopped straw, pine needles, a mixture of loose peat with well-rotted compost or humus, even mowed lawn grass or cardboard.

When do strawberries ripen?

In order to understand when the strawberries are ripe, let’s look a little at the planting stage. As you know, strawberries are planted in July-August or September, and they are given the opportunity to take root well and develop in order to survive the winter painlessly. If for some reason the specified period of time was missed for planting strawberries, then mid-April is the time to return to this issue: planting strawberries under film at this time will allow you to get a significant harvest a little earlier than the deadline.

Understanding when strawberries ripen is based on knowledge of the classification of varieties of a given product. Strawberry varieties are divided into local and selective. Breeding varieties are created by research institutions, and local varieties are created by amateur gardeners through the selection of the best forms from local material. Most strawberry varieties are propagated vegetatively.

When do strawberries of remontant varieties ripen?

If you figure out when strawberries of remontant varieties ripen, then you need to know that this crop bears fruit two to three times a season. Thus, flowering occurs in stages from May to October, creating a certain basis that allows you to obtain berries during this period. Also, it should be noted that fruiting occurs in waves: early June berries appear, the first ten days of July are characterized by the second fruiting, mid-August is marked by the third stage, when strawberries ripen, and under favorable weather conditions, another period of time is allocated when strawberries are ripe, which falls in mid-October.

When do strawberries grown in protected soil ripen?

Examples of varieties of such strawberries are, for example, “burned” and “vola”. These varieties are recommended to be grown in indoor winter greenhouses and indoors. The varieties are very high-yielding, easily transported and can be processed. The time when strawberries of this variety ripen falls in the second half of June and lasts until the first half of July.

When do strawberries ripen for open ground?

Strawberry varieties for open ground include varieties such as “Desna”, “Rusapovka”, “Pacahontas”, “Talisman”, “Festivalnaya”. Strawberries of this variety are recommended for growing in open ground. The ripening period for strawberries for open ground falls in June-July.

March

When the first warm days arrive and the snow partially melts from the beds, cover the strawberries with plastic film or agrofibre. This will allow you to get an early harvest of berries.

The covering material is placed on arcs so that there is an air gap between it and the plants. Please note: the greater the volume of air under the shelter, the lower the temperature the strawberry bushes can withstand.

As soon as the snow has completely melted, the bed is cleaned: dried leaves and flower stalks are removed, and the remains of the mustache are cut off using scissors. Young rosettes are planted in the places where the dead bushes grew.

After restoration of the beds, preventive treatment against diseases and pests is carried out. Plantings are sprayed with 1% Bordeaux mixture or any copper-based preparation.

When the ground thaws, the soil in the strawberry bed is loosened. This will help retain the moisture accumulated over the winter. At the same time, the bushes are slightly earthed up so that the root system grows faster.

When do wild strawberries ripen and when can they be picked?

Today, many berries are sold in supermarkets, but you won’t find wild forest strawberries in them, which have a special aroma. This gift of the forest can only be collected at a certain time, once a year. That is why many summer residents who have plots near forested areas, as well as simply lovers of wildlife, want to know in what month this berry ripens.

Ripening time

Having collected a basket of wild strawberries in time, you can treat your loved ones or make special jam. Depending on the region, the period of appearance of ripe berries on small forest edges may differ. In the middle zone of our country, in the Urals and Siberia, meadow strawberries ripen from June 15.

It is worth remembering that the plant does not bear fruit for long, so those who want to pick it have only a week before the berry disappears.

It also happens that maturation occurs later. The reason may be bad weather (cloudy and rainy days). This can also happen earlier if the plant had enough sun and moisture during its development. In the southern regions of the country, the ripening period occurs in May, and in the Moscow region, summer residents go out into the forests only in mid-July due to lack of sun.

It is best to pick berries early in the morning, when there is no dew on the grass, otherwise they will not store well. These are very delicate fruits that are best processed on the day of harvest.

Collection period

At the beginning of ripening, when the berries are just beginning to turn red, they have a not entirely pleasant sour taste. It’s rare, but it happens that strawberries even taste bitter. This is normal. Only the first wave is characterized by such taste qualities; the remaining berries will be sweeter. The taste is greatly influenced by the weather, so you should pay attention to it.

With constant rain and lack of sun, the fruits are unsweetened and tasteless. At the same time, they are watery and taste like simple grass. Such strawberries will quickly turn into “porridge” in a basket because they are too soft. If nature decides to cause a drought, then the berries will be small, similar to dried fruits. But in balanced weather, scarlet fruits delight with aroma and juiciness.

To collect berries, it is better to use wide containers, where they can be distributed along the bottom, rather than stacked in large piles. You can harvest many parts of strawberries, not just the fruits. These are both leaves and flowers, which should be carefully picked and dried on burlap so that they do not rot. Compotes, preserves, and jams are made from the berries. They can also be frozen by grinding them with sugar. You can dry the fruits and brew them with tea.

However, despite such a variety of possible options for preserving strawberries, it is worth remembering that only fresh berries have a large number of useful elements.

Proper planting

Correct care can increase the potential of the most ordinary bushes, while incorrect care can destroy even the best ones. Proper planting and care are especially important in the first weeks, when the plant is just beginning to take root.

  • It is not advisable to store seedlings for a long time before planting. But it is extremely important to choose the time - you should not expose fragile plants to the threat of frost. It is worth covering the plantings with film or other covering material in case of cold weather or rain; excess moisture in low temperature conditions can kill the plant.
  • The correct choice of planting location is important: strawberries love sunny places and do not like drafts.
  • The chosen location should be fertilized generously before planting the seedlings; do not forget about fertilizers in the future. Manure humus and peat are excellent for fertilizer. Ideally, fertilizers should be applied in five stages: to seedlings, before flowering, during the formation of ovaries, during fruit growth and after harvesting.
  • To prevent the root system from drying out, it is worth taking the time to mulch, especially if hot weather is expected ahead. Any organic materials are suitable for it: straw, sawdust, pine needles.
  • In the first week after planting the seedlings, watering should be daily, later - as needed. The norm is watering at the rate of 10 liters of water per 1 square meter of plantings.

Due to the scale of the country, in the Russian Federation the ripening time for strawberries in each region is different. It all depends on the latitude in which they are located.

In the Moscow region and Moscow, strawberries ripen in warm weather at the end of June, and if it rained and it was cool, then at the end of this month. Also, the ripening time of the berry is influenced by its variety.

When do strawberries ripen depending on the variety?

The fruiting period of strawberries is influenced by the variety. In general, strawberries are divided into regular varieties, which ripen once a year, and remontant varieties, which ripen before the first frost. If strawberries of a remontant variety ripen large at first, then by the end of the fruiting period they will be smaller and vice versa. Regular varieties of strawberries, which ripen once a year, also have their own characteristics:

  • Early varieties of strawberries will produce a harvest at the end of May.
  • Mid-early varieties will begin to ripen a week after early strawberries ripen.
  • Medium - a week after the ripening of mid-early strawberries.
  • Late strawberries will ripen at the end of June.

Taking into account these characteristics of each variety, you can enjoy juicy berries until the beginning of July, and if you plant a remontant variety, you can enjoy them until frost. At the same time, remontant strawberries ripen simultaneously with the early variety.

July

After the end of fruiting, all old, diseased and damaged leaves are removed from the bushes. Water the bed well, loosen the soil around the bushes and remove all excess tendrils from them.

In July, strawberry mites can settle on strawberry bushes. Leaves are cut off from damaged plants and burned. Then the entire bed is sprayed with water (about 60°C) or a hot solution of potassium permanganate.

If other insect pests appear on the plants, the strawberry bushes are sprayed with chemical or biological insecticides. You can also resort to folk remedies. In addition, during this period, strawberries are often affected by spotting, powdery mildew, and gray rot. 1% Bordeaux mixture with the addition of colloidal sulfur (100 g of the drug per 10 liters of water) helps to cope with diseases.
