What are cucumbers: varieties and varieties of crops

Varieties of cucumbers for open ground

Cucumber varieties grown in open ground are less demanding of heat. The dimensions of the plants can be significant, since the bushes are not limited by the space of the greenhouse. They are most often characterized by short ripening periods and massive yield. In the absence of immunity, these varieties are more susceptible to disease than those intended for cultivation indoors, especially if the summer is not hot and it rains often.

The best varieties for the greenhouse

The most important criteria that you need to focus on when selecting cucumbers for a greenhouse are self-pollination and plant size. The presence of insects cannot be guaranteed. Manual pollination is a rather labor-intensive and time-consuming procedure.

Reviews from gardeners

The year before last I grew Barabulka cucumbers.
Planted in the second half of June. The yield is good, they managed to grow. Although we live in the south, we are in the south of Siberia, and cucumbers are very good for pickling. The ovary is bushy, without male flowers. Nikola 1

I really liked the Barabulka cucumbers, and Liliput and Murashka are also like that, with a bouquet ovary.
The taste is excellent, they are not bitter, they are crunchy when twisted. Lavoda

This year I was very pleased with the cucumbers of the Barabulka variety.
I absolutely recommend it to everyone. Sweet, firm and great for salad. The children simply ate them from the garden, and their mother praised them very much when they preserved them. Even overgrown ones (sometimes you miss them when picking) are just as tasty. Andrey Vasiliev

High-yielding cucumbers

Productivity is one of the main criteria that gardeners invariably pay attention to when selecting a variety for themselves. The maximum possible indicators are usually achieved when planting in greenhouses. And, of course, plants require proper care.

Emelya F1

One of the relatively few hybrids and varieties intended for cultivation indoors. The hybrid is parthenocarpic, early ripening - begins to bear fruit 40-42 days after emergence. Plants of the variety are medium-branched and vigorous, with a predominantly female type of flowering. The fruit is spindle-shaped, green with short light-colored stripes, reaches 15 cm in length, and its weight can reach 120-150 grams. The hybrid is resistant to diseases such as cucumber mosaic and olive spot. Tolerant to powdery mildew and root rot. From 1 sq.m you can collect 12-16 kg of fruit.

Varieties of cucumbers of different ripening periods

Early cucumbers are considered to be those that ripen 38–45 days after the seeds sprout. For varieties with an average ripening period, this takes 48–55 days, for late varieties - 60 days or more. If you choose several varieties wisely, fruits can be harvested from the bushes from mid-June to October.

Early

Early ripening greens are mostly eaten immediately or canned at home. Their skin, as a rule, is thin, even in the refrigerator they will not last long, they will wither. During the summer, such varieties can be planted twice.

Reviews from gardeners

I believe that this cucumber variety, under the cute name Finger, is very well suited for growing in garden plots and summer cottages, since it is a high-yielding variety. It allows summer residents to consume them fresh, preserve them, and even sell them. Our cucumbers grow so strong and tall. It is better to tie them to a trellis. Then they will take up less space on the site, and harvesting will be easier. Such cucumbers can be grown as seedlings, which are best later planted in greenhouses. They love moisture and warmth. The soil should be fertilized and watered abundantly, but there is no need to over-water it. If the nights are cool (at a temperature of 15ºC), the greenhouse should be covered with a film covering. The harvest can be harvested 45 days after germination. The cucumbers are cute, small (up to 12 cm), although there are smaller varieties. You should not let them outgrow so as not to spoil the quality. The cucumbers taste excellent, crispy. My personal review of these cucumbers: an excellent variety, worthy of a place in any garden.

First of all, it should be said about the Palchik cucumber variety that they have a fairly high yield, which allows you to eat plenty of cucumbers and preserve them to your heart’s content.
An important feature of these cucumbers is their size - an average length of 10 cm. And in appearance they are mostly smooth, like fingers. You will have your first harvest of cucumbers in about 42 days. Excellent cucumber both in quality and taste. Moreljuba

I want to say that the Palchik variety made an excellent impression on me.
A variety of Russian selection. Early. The period from germination to fruiting is 44–48 days. The plants are bee-pollinated, with predominantly female flowering. Productivity is high. The fruiting period is long. The plants are powerful and develop very quickly. This variety has a bunched type of ovary formation. The fruits are elongated-cylindrical, small in size, dark green, large-tubercular. Cucumbers have the ability not to turn yellow for a long time, which is very good for those who do not have the opportunity to collect them frequently. The commercial properties of the fruit are good. The taste of both fresh and canned and pickled cucumbers is simply excellent. Also good for preparing summer salads. Disease resistance is average. I was not affected by late blight. Maratik24

Pinocchio F1

The early ripening cucumber Buratino F1, which takes 44-46 days from the emergence of shoots to the start of fruiting, is a parthenocarpic hybrid with a predominantly female type of flowering. Designed for cultivation under temporary film covers and in open ground. The hybrid is cold-resistant, high-yielding, with bouquet-shaped ovaries, of which there are up to 6 pieces in nodes. The fruit is a genetically devoid of bitterness, large-tubercular dark green elongated cylindrical green, reaching 8-9 cm in length and weighing up to 100 g. From 1 sq.m they get about 11-13 kg of fruit.

Exotic varieties

Along with “classic” cucumbers, gardeners are increasingly trying to cultivate unusual exotics. And often experiments give very good results. You just need to familiarize yourself with all the nuances of agricultural technology in advance.

Indian cucumber (momordica)

It is a fairly close “relative” of the cucumber and belongs to the same Pumpkin family. But they are still not a variety of cucumbers. The fruits resemble cucumbers, slightly narrowed at the stem, completely covered with “warts” of different sizes. The length reaches 25 cm. As it ripens, the color of the skin changes from dense green to saffron-orange, the fruits themselves seem to “open up”, and crimson-raspberry seeds become visible. The general appearance strongly resembles a crocodile with its mouth wide open.

The fruit of the Indian cucumber looks so unusual that not everyone will dare to try it.

Cucumber-Lemon (Crystal Apple)

This is a variety of cucumber, albeit a very unusual looking one. The stem reaches a length of 5 m. The leaves are large, as if carved. Fruiting lasts from mid-July until the first frost. Productivity is about 10 kg per plant. Seedlings are planted in the ground in early June, seeds - in mid-May. You will definitely need a trellis. The culture requires heat, does not tolerate frost, and loves high humidity. In the greenhouse it is pollinated by hand, in the open ground - by wind and insects. “Lemons” need to be planted away from ordinary cucumbers; during cross-pollination, varietal characteristics are lost.

Cucumber-lemon is very easy to confuse with citrus, especially from a distance

The fruits of the plant are indeed extremely reminiscent of lemons. Unripe ones look like greenish balls with sparse edges. As they ripen, they change color to whitish and sunny yellow. The skin is rough. The pulp is snow-white, shimmering with mother-of-pearl, the seeds are translucent, the juice is colorless. The average diameter of the fruit is 8 cm, weight is 50 g. In terms of taste, it is practically no different from an ordinary cucumber. It never tastes bitter. Suitable for salting and marinating. Fresh fruits are stored for no more than 1.5–2 weeks.

In principle, there is nothing particularly difficult about cultivating cucumbers. You just need to choose the right variety or hybrid. All varieties presented in stores have many undoubted advantages, but at the same time they are not without more or less significant disadvantages. Therefore, the gardener needs to determine in advance the main selection criteria and be guided by them. The main limitations are imposed by the climate in the region and the presence of a greenhouse on the site. You can also proceed from the appearance of the plant, yield, size and purpose of the fruit, and their taste.

Naughty Strong Cucumbers: Bad Seeds Are Mixed with Good Seeds

Take two bags of two different varieties of cucumbers (bad and good) and mix them randomly. They come up with a name for this mixture: “Naughty Strong Cucumbers.”

At the same time, after packaging in bags of 10 pieces, you may randomly receive a completely different combination of these two varieties.

The package says that there are two varieties in half: Mnogodetny F1 (50%) and Kharitoshka F1 (50%).

Why come up with another common name for a cucumber mixture? And to attract more attention

And is it really difficult? As they say: “How long, skillfully?” Sleight of hand and no... Well, you understand.

Many buyers do not even read what is written on the back in small print. They don’t realize that Naughty Strong cucumbers don’t exist, and the bag contains two different varieties, mixed in a random way.

Round cucumbers “Kharitoshka”, or whatever they are called?

Thanks to my readers who told me that this “Kharitoshka” has long been offered in gardening stores under different trade names.
