The Babushkino Lukoshko tomato is a relatively new variety, but it has already acquired fans among gardeners.
The originator is a well-known agro. The variety was included in the State Register of the Russian Federation in 2015; it is approved for cultivation in all regions, in greenhouses and under film covers.
There are still few reviews of the Babushkino Lukoshko tomato, but the main features of its cultivation, advantages and disadvantages are described in sufficient detail.
Official information
The variety was submitted for variety testing in 2013 by Gavrish Breeding Company LLC, Moscow, Russia. For two years, variety testing stations in all regions of the country have been working to describe all the advantages of the variety as accurately as possible and provide information to vegetable growers.
In 2015, the variety was included in the register of breeding achievements of the Russian Federation under number 8654079. The tomato was recommended by the variety testing commission for cultivation in heated greenhouses and film spring shelters in all climatic regions of the country as a salad variety and medium-early ripening period.
Basics of care
In order for the tomato yield to be praiseworthy, you need to know all the requirements for caring for them: from watering to fighting harmful insects.
What is included in these requirements:
- The bushes are quite tall, so it is worth tying them up with ropes or wire;
- Excess tops, leaves and shoots should be trimmed for normal fruiting;
- The greenhouse is constantly ventilated by opening the door. If the plant blooms in an open space, then open the film;
- Tomatoes need high-quality watering twice a week with non-ice water. But excess moisture is destructive for them;
- There should always be enough fertilizer, feed at least once a month. Do not forget that the soil must contain sand and manure;
- To strengthen the immune system, the crop needs to be hardened off in April, when the first seedlings grow. They can be taken out onto the balcony for a while;
- Spray plants for prevention against harmful insects: for example, from butterflies, beetles, ticks;
- The soil needs to be loosened, crushed, and hilled for a normal supply of nutrients to the roots. Weed removal is mandatory.

Caring for these plants is no different from other garden crops. In return, summer residents receive a large number of fruits with a sweet and aromatic taste.
Characteristics and description
Tomatoes “Babushkino Lukoshko” are an indeterminate, tall variety. The manufacturer, describing the variety, says that the height of 200 cm is completely normal and, having reached it, the tomato can be pinched, or it can be grown in a horizontal culture.
The leaf blade is medium in size, classic tomato, rich green.
The fruit is flat-round in shape. When buying seeds, a vegetable grower may notice that the author (if specifically the seeds from Gavrish) is slightly disingenuous and indicates the weight of tomato fruits within 250 g, but the registration commission stopped at 160-180.
At the same time, those vegetable growers who have already become familiar with the variety speak with caution about the weight, since the tomato has uneven fruits. One tomato inflorescence can bear both large and seriously sub-standard tomatoes.
The fruit has slight ribbing and is medium in density. When ripe, a tomato has a light green color, but biological maturity gives the tomato an intense red color.
The skin of a tomato is tender and at the same time dense, preventing it from cracking. Tomatoes harvested during the period of technical maturity can easily withstand transportation over long distances without loss of quality.
When cut, you can count from 4 to 6 seed chambers, which are filled with tomato pulp. The seeds are large in size, but there are not a large number of them.
Advantages and disadvantages
Pros:
- It tolerates thickening calmly, the bush is tall but compact.
- Tomatoes set and continue to develop until the first frost.
- It is possible to harvest seeds yourself.
- High yield.
- Tomatoes do not crack.
- Minimal difficulties when caring for the plant.
Minuses:
- It is necessary to carry out preventive treatment of plants.
- The weight of tomatoes varies, even within a cluster there are some very small ones - 110-150 grams and quite large specimens up to 250 grams each.
- The taste is good, but not unique.
Resistance to diseases and pests
The registration commission does not give special instructions on the variety’s resistance to diseases. This means that the tomato requires preventive treatments in closed ground, but in open ground it can show itself in unexpected ways.
The variety is very young. There are no reviews yet from vegetable growers about how resistant tomatoes are to pathogens and pests. Experienced vegetable growers are well aware that no matter what the efforts of breeders, there is not yet a single well-resistant variety. This means that the plant needs preventive treatment.
To grow a healthy harvest and not give up a single fruit to disease, you must:
- regularly treat the plantings, starting from the moment the ovary forms;
- constantly alternate fungicidal preparations, which will not allow the pathogen to become addictive;
- select varieties with previously known resistance to certain diseases or pests.
How to grow properly
This type of tomato can be planted in any region of Russia. If it is a very cool area, then it is best to plant them in a greenhouse as seedlings. The seeds are planted in special containers in March, covered with film, and waited until they sprout. As soon as the shoots have already produced two or three leaves, they are planted separately from each other. This way they will have more nutrition and will not interfere with each other.
If the sprouts do not have enough natural daylight, you can place a lamp above them. The temperature in the room must be at least 18 degrees.
When the seedlings grow tall and strong, they can be planted in the garden. Before this period, the land needs to be prepared, loosened, dug, fertilizer added and watered. If the bushes are very dense, then trim off excess stems and leaves. You should not forget about the distance between the bushes. Distance is important so that it is convenient to approach the bushes and so that their roots do not interfere with each other.
While tomatoes are growing, they need constant care, otherwise they will get sick and not produce tasty vegetables.
Features of growing the variety
Medium early ripening variety. To get tomatoes as soon as possible, you need to start sowing in early March.
Since “Babushkino Lukoshko” is a variety, collecting your seeds will not be difficult. In this case, the seeds need to be pickled in a 0.01% solution of potassium permanganate for 15-20 minutes, then rinsed in running water and only then begin heating. This procedure will kill all pathogens that have “sat” on the tomato seed.
Looking at the “Babushkino Lukoshko” tomato, those who planted and grew it say that there is no particular difficulty in agricultural technology. It is enough to adhere to the classical rules of maintaining an indeterminate crop, and the harvest will be good. The rules consist of the following points:
- We sow only with hatched (100% live) seeds;
- We carry out the dive in the phase of 2 true leaves and certainly into individual containers;
- For cultivation, we select a universal nutritious soil, otherwise we feed it during the seedling period;
- We plant seedlings in a greenhouse at the age of 55-60 days;
- We carry out the culture in 1-2 shoots;
- We do the first fertilizing 2-3 weeks after planting, with nitrogen fertilizers;
- The second feeding after 2 weeks, add potassium and phosphorus to the nitrogenous compounds;
- We are constantly tweaking and adding culture.
Harvesting and application
Tomatoes are harvested after they have acquired a firm and elastic structure. Some gardeners prefer to pick fruits at the stage of technical maturity, when the tomatoes are still light green in color. For long-term storage, tomatoes are wiped with a dry cloth and placed in a wooden box, which is covered with a clean cloth on top. An excellent place to store tomatoes is a dry cellar or basement.
Due to its attractive appearance, the Babushkino Lukoshko tomato is actively used to decorate the holiday table. The vegetable makes beautiful and tasty cuts, snacks and salads. The sweetish pulp goes harmoniously with soups and side dishes and complements the taste of meat and fish dishes. Tomatoes are used to prepare pickled preparations, pickled or canned products for the winter.
Interesting! They even make jam from tomatoes. True, this unusual delicacy is used as a sauce for meat. To add piquancy, mint or cinnamon is added to the jam.
Landing
If you are confident in the quality of the seed material and the reliability of the manufacturer, then Babushkin tomato seeds do not require preliminary preparation.
They are embedded in grooves to a depth of 1.5 cm in moist soil. The container with seeds is covered with plastic or glass. Can be covered with film. The seedlings are ventilated daily and watered as the soil dries.
Landing schedule
- March 20-30 Sowing seedlings
- April 10 – 20 Dive
- June 1-10 Planting in the ground
If the planting schedule is followed, the first harvest can be obtained in mid-July. Fruiting will last until September.
Landing in the ground
Grown seedlings are planted in open ground in prepared holes at a distance of 50 cm between plants. The distance between the rows is 60 cm. Planting bushes in a checkerboard pattern will help save space on the site.
What summer residents say
Gardeners who have ever grown Lukoshko leave reviews about it.
Lydia: If we talk about the description of this variety, we can say that it will appeal to lovers of large, fleshy fruits. But they grew in the greenhouse in different sizes, sometimes larger, sometimes smaller. Very sweet, ideal in vegetable salads. They are not capricious in their care.
Andrey: I planted it for two years in a row. Amazing variety. The harvest is rich from two bushes. They love fertilized soil and water. If there is not enough fertilizer, red spots may appear.
In order for these tomatoes to be large enough and have a rich taste, you need to provide them with proper care. This variety is suitable for sale and for use in home preparations.
History of the variety's creation
There is a talented breeder in Russia who specializes in tomatoes - Sergey Gavrish. It is his merit that the Babushkino Basket variety appeared. The tomatoes immediately proved themselves only on the positive side, and officially in 2022 this variety was entered into the State Register, and then into catalogs. The goal of breeding a new tomato was to achieve high yields, but at the same time:
- To be able to grow tomatoes even in conditions where frosts or sharp fluctuations in air temperature may occur, which are most often observed in the northern regions.
- So that the plant does not get sick, is unpretentious, persistent and strong.
Sergei Fedorovich succeeded, and now more and more often in the garden beds you can see beautiful large fruits that are original in shape, truly reminiscent of a basket. It should be noted that Grandmother's Basket is not a hybrid. This is a real full-fledged variety.
