February is the right time to select and purchase tomato seeds, which we will sow in March. I have been growing tomatoes in a greenhouse and in open ground for only 6 years, but I have already managed to create my own hit parade of tomato varieties.

History of appearance

Breeding new varieties takes some time. Breeders lay the foundations and improve certain qualities year after year. This happened with the Sugarloaf tomato. A whole group of specialists worked on the creation of the variety, and the authorship was shared among themselves: Volkova V.V., Gubko V.N., Steinert T.V., Teplova N.S., Aliluev A.V., Avdeenko L.M., Alilueva L.A., Romanov A.M., Chuikova Z.D.

Having brought the variety to perfection in September 2022, it was submitted for testing and inclusion in the register of varietal achievements of the Russian Federation. Application number 78903. The applicant was Individual Entrepreneur Anatoly Vladimirovich Aliluev (Chelyabinsk region, Miass). He was also entrusted with the duties of the originator of the variety.

Having passed successful tests at breeding stations in 2022, the variety was entered into the register.

Description of the tomato variety Sugarloaf

The new variety will be of interest to those vegetable growers who really love large and very large tomato fruits.

Description of fruits

Bushes with ripe tomatoes are worthy of admiration. The fruit has the following characteristics:

  • shape - flat-round;
  • The color of the fruit during the ripening period is green without a spot at the stalk;
  • ripe fruit is red;
  • density - average;
  • the smell of fruit pulp is medium, not intrusive;
  • ribbing is expressed with medium intensity;
  • number of nests - six or more;
  • fruit weight - within 450-650 g.

Attention! When testing the variety, it was noted that the variety is not prone to producing small fruits.

Tomatoes weighing 250 g are still very small. They will increase in size and only then gain color. Its genetic potential is great and the bush “nourishes” all the ovaries to legal parameters.

Taste qualities of fruits

Taste is a very personal matter. This is especially true for tomatoes. Some people are delighted with sour things, while others need pleasant sweetness. When evaluating a variety, tasting scores for all regions of the country are taken as a basis. Sugarloaf received a "good" rating.

Those vegetable growers who have already grown this variety say that it has extreme plasticity depending on weather conditions and soil nutrition. It is enough to increase fertilizing and improve the microclimate of the greenhouse to get not only large, but also sweet fruits.

Methods of application

The tomato is recommended as a salad. Huge tomatoes can surprise even an experienced vegetable grower. Those who sell vegetable products on the market will appreciate the variety. Enthusiastic buyers will prioritize sugarloaf.

The fruits can be used as:

  • vegetable slicing;
  • for salads;
  • processing for tomato products.

Attention. Of course, the excess can be recycled, although it would be a pity. It is worth noting that the variety produces very beautiful juice and sauce. Bright saturated color does not require correction.

Tomato yield Sugarloaf

The variety is very responsive to soil fertility and watering. However, during variety testing, all agrotechnical standards are met. At the same time, the variety has a legalized yield indicator of 11.2-11.5 kg per m2 of greenhouse film area.

Description of the variety

Loaf sugar is a varietal crop. Despite the fact that the stems are powerful, they need garter. If the shoots exceed 160 cm in height, they are pinched. The formation of the first ovary occurs between the 6-7th internode. Up to 5 fruits are collected on the brush. The tomatoes are large, bright scarlet in color.

Important! It is recommended to grow a bush with 2 stems.

Advantages and disadvantages of sugarloaf tomato

For lovers of large-fruited varieties, Sugarloaf will have no drawbacks. Huge, beautiful red tomatoes can amaze with their appearance and this is their main advantage.

Agricultural technology has its own characteristics, which also cannot be called disadvantages:

  • the tomato needs reliable fixation;
  • an increased content of nutrients in the soil is desirable;
  • Regular and abundant watering is recommended.

The disadvantage can be considered average resistance to diseases.

Growing and care

Seeds are sown in mid-March, having previously been disinfected in manganese. Soil from the garden is not suitable for seedlings, you can either purchase it in a store or make it yourself, for this you will need sand, peat, a small amount of ash, turf soil and soil, all of this, except the ash, take in equal quantities and mix. It is recommended to moisten the soil before planting. The room where the container with the plants is located should be sufficiently warm and light; it is advisable to place the seedlings on the windowsill.

After the plants produce two leaves, they can be transplanted into separate containers. For its proper development, fertilizing and regular watering with warm water are necessary. Towards mid-May, 6-7 leaves already appear on young plants, which means that they are ready to be transplanted into the greenhouse.

Interesting! Suitable for growing even on the balcony.

“Sugar plum” can be transferred to open soil only in June. 7 days before this, it is recommended to harden the seedlings by taking them out into the fresh air for a short time. The best predecessors for tomatoes are: carrots, cucumbers, herbs and zucchini. Before planting, the soil must be fertilized using any organic fertilizer.

Bushes need to be tied to stakes or a trellis, about 2-3 times per season. The stem is formed into 2 or 3 stems, leaving 1-2 stepsons in reserve. The variety is distinguished by compact bushes; up to nine pieces can fit on one square meter. It is necessary to water at least twice a week and do not allow the soil to dry out.

Features of planting and care

The Sugarloaf tomato variety produces very large fruits. In order to “extract” from it all the potential laid down by breeders, you should carefully consider sowing, growing seedlings, and cultivating during fruiting.

Dates for planting seedlings and planting in the ground

Medium varieties of tomatoes do not require very early sowing of seeds for seedlings. Before disembarkation, it should be 60-65 days old. By this age, seedlings:

  • has a powerful escape;
  • height 25-30 cm;
  • 7-8 well-developed, healthy leaf blades.

Planting in the soil of a greenhouse is carried out depending on the possibility of regulating the microclimate of the greenhouse. If the temperature does not rise above 16 ℃ during the day, planting should be delayed a little. Seedlings planted in cold soil will not begin to grow until the temperature corresponds to the norm for a heat-loving crop.

Seedling care

If seedlings are grown in special, universal soils, then they do not require fertilizing. When using garden soil at the age of 1 month, it must be fed with a weak solution of organic matter (manure) diluted 1:20 or a solution of superphosphate prepared at the rate of 1 g per 1 liter of irrigation water.

Compliance with temperature standards is also an important point in agricultural technology. Daytime temperatures should be between 21-23 ℃, and night temperatures 16-17 ℃. This will allow the seedlings not to stretch out and grow a root system rather than a shoot.

Tomato needs fresh air. Daily ventilation is the basis for growth intensity. At first, up to 1 month, ventilation should be short, 5-10 minutes. As you grow, you can increase it to 20-30 minutes a day.

Watering should be:

  • warm water;
  • deep (so that the earthen lump is completely wet and the water comes out into the pan);
  • regular, but not frequent.

Selecting a site preparing the site

The greenhouse requires special treatment. When planting a tomato, it is better to grow it in a monoculture. Neighborhood with other vegetables and herbs is undesirable.

It is especially important to plant in treated soil. If replacing it is not possible, then in the fall they spray with Bordeaux mixture and use sulfur bombs. This will clear the greenhouse structure not only of fungi, but also of their spores.

When constantly using the same soils, partial replacement is practiced, only in areas of direct growth. In this case, soil mixtures are prepared in the fall. They may have the following composition:

  • garden or garden soil;
  • mature compost;
  • high-quality humus.

All parts are mixed in equal proportions.

For 10 kg of such a mixture, 20-30 g of superphosphate is added.

Watering and fertilizing

Watering tomatoes begins from the moment of planting until the end of fruiting.

Attention! Nutrients are supplied only with water. The root system is capable of absorbing only liquid fractions. Stopping watering leads to aging of the bushes and a lack of harvest.

Tomatoes should be watered rarely, but deeply. There is no need for moisture in the top layer of soil, just like this, where the roots are located should be moist.

Fertilizing is carried out with irrigation water. The first, 10-15 days after disembarkation, then every 15-20 days until mid-August.

Description and characteristics of the variety

Yellow sugar belongs to the category of salad types and ripens in medium terms. Valued for its adaptability and uniform yield.

The first harvests are harvested 112–116 days after germination.

The variety is presented to farmers by the agricultural company Sedek. Features and characteristics of tomato:

  • determinant type of growth;
  • compact, easy-to-care bushes;
  • medium-sized stems (length 120–150 cm);
  • cluster fruiting (in clusters of up to 2-3 huge tomatoes).

Fleshy, juicy, sugary tomatoes with bright colors resemble fairy tale fruits.

Description of fruits:

  • large sizes;
  • average weight - 250–350 g;
  • tastes like an exotic fruit;
  • high sugar levels;
  • shape - round and flattened;
  • coloring: lemon-cream;
  • The pulp is sugary-grainy.

Fresh slices and salads are prepared from tomatoes, juices are squeezed, purees and dressings are made.

Pest and disease control

The variety has average resistance to diseases. He needs constant checkups. Timely identification of pathogens or pests will help to quickly deal with the problem.

Preventative treatments

There are a number of complex drugs that can prevent and treat major tomato diseases. By using the instructions and correctly applying the medicinal solution, you can not only save the crop, but also prevent the proliferation of spores in the greenhouse.

The following plant protection products have proven themselves to be the most effective:

  • Quadris. Let's use it as a preventive measure against Alternaria, powdery mildew and late blight;
  • Bordeaux mixture for fungal infections;
  • Acrobat MC, Thanos 50, Metaxil for alternation blight on tomatoes;
  • Skor, Acrobat are most effective for late blight;
  • Thanos 50, Revus 250 SС.К.С are sprayed for septoria, macrosporiosis;
  • Fitosporin-M and Fitolavin-300 are effective against bacterial cancer

There is no point in waiting for mass defeats. As soon as the seedlings are planted, processing must begin.

It is enough to carry them out once every 18-20 days and this will protect the entire harvest.

Nuances and features of agricultural technology. Reviews from practicing gardeners

Start growing the crop by preparing the seedlings. Tomato seeds are sown in March-April. They will germinate at a temperature of +20…+25 °C. When true leaves appear, young bushes dive. In a permanent place, they are rooted according to a pattern of 30–40x70 cm. Tomato care is standard.

Advice. Form plants into 2 stems.

If you go by the number of reviews, this tomato is not in great demand among gardeners. First of all, summer residents evaluate the taste of the fruit. Svetlana from Moscow and Elena from Ulyanovsk found the tomatoes delicious. But Yaroslava (Tomsk) and Olga (Naberezhnye Chelny) noted that their tomatoes turned out bland. Lyudmila from the Volga region praised the taste and yield, and also called the variety suitable for greenhouses. Galina (St. Petersburg) had difficulties growing seedlings.

And yet, the Red Sugar varietal tomato is attractive due to many characteristics. Plant the bushes in a greenhouse to assess their maximum yield and taste the harvest. If you love sweet, juicy tomatoes, this variety has the potential to become one of your favorites.
