Appearance

This variety of cherry is characterized by a number of features that make it popular among gardeners.

Height and dimensions of an adult tree

The garland is relatively small in size and rarely exceeds 2.5 m. The crown has a rounded shape and includes branches that extend from the main trunk almost at a right angle.

An adult tree is compact in size

Fruit

This plant is characterized by large fruits, the mass of which reaches 6 g, and the diameter is 2.5 cm. The shape of the berries resembles a heart. At the same time, they have a dark red peel on top and bright pulp with pink juice.

The berries are characterized by a sweet and sour taste. According to the tasting scale, the fruits received 4.2 points. Inside there is a large oval bone that is easily separated from the pulp.

Cherry Garland: description of the variety and characteristics

Breeders regularly manage to obtain completely new and unique varieties of cherries that can satisfy the desires and needs of even the most sophisticated gardeners. Cherry Garland is a typical duk (a hybrid of cherry and sweet cherry is called duk). The Garland cherry variety was created by A.Ya. Voronchikhina, one of the employees of the Rossoshansk Experimental Horticulture Station.

The breeder crossed two varieties - Krasa Severa Izhukovskaya, and the result was such an interesting and rather atypical variety. Around 2000, the Garlyanda cherry variety was finally recommended for growing in the North Caucasus region and, of course, its fame quickly spread to other regions and regions of our country, as well as a little beyond its borders. But the Garland cherry still refers more to an ordinary cherry than to cherries, so we will consider some of the features of planting and care precisely from the point of view of the characteristics of cherry plantings. But we will talk about this in the second part of our article, and in this section we will talk in more detail about the varietal characteristics and describe the planting itself.

Cherry Garland: photo of the variety

Cherry Garland is formed in the form of a fairly short tree, although its height can reach three to four meters. The crown is round, not very dense, and mainly consists of branches that extend from the trunk at right angles. But the crown can be formed independently if the gardener has a desire to create the shape and type of crown that he would like to see on the site. The Garland cherry variety is calm about shaping and reacts normally to pruning, quickly recovering on its own. Young shoots are quite smooth, even, and colored in a reddish tint. But with age, the color of the Garland cherry can change, becoming darker, almost gray-black. This is a normal phenomenon for cherry planting, and sometimes you can determine how old the cherry has reached by its color.

Fruiting of the Garland cherry variety usually begins on last year's shoots, and fruits can also form on numerous bouquet branches. The most important thing is to constantly monitor the condition of the planting, to prevent the development of unfavorable characteristics and diseases, and also to ensure that the cherries are under no circumstances affected by pests. The young shoots of the Garland cherry, which were formed this year, bear only vegetative buds, but next year they will begin to bear fruit, so it is recommended to constantly monitor their growth and, if necessary, prune them so that the plantings feel more comfortable and safe. In addition, the overall appearance of the tree will depend on pruning, so you should be as careful as possible with all this. But we’ll talk about this a little later, when we move on to the part with agricultural technology and caring for Garland cherry plantings.

Judging by the fact that gardeners leave a fairly large number of reviews about this variety, the Garland cherry is distinguished by the fact that the fruits on it are very large. But the originator initially indicated in his description that the fruits are miniature - one Garland cherry reaches a weight of no more than four grams.

Description of cherry fruit Garland

In terms of their hue, both the fruits and the juice that is obtained from them are distinguished by a rich red hue. This means that cherries may belong to the group of so-called morels or griots. Now let’s explain what this means: all varieties of cherries, depending on what shade the juice is colored, can be divided into several groups - these are morels (griots) or amorels. In Morols, the juice is colored in rich shades (like in the cherry variety we are considering), but in Amorels, the juice can be very light, just like their color. So, when choosing a particular variety, a gardener should also pay attention to similar characteristics, which can play a significant role. You always want to have classic cherry plantings, but there are also those gardeners who move away from the classics and can grow exotic varieties. Moreover, there is no need to worry - even very unusual varieties today can adapt to the reality of Russian garden plots, and the harvest is no worse; many do not even see the differences.

The pulp of Garland cherries is very dense, but at the same time it is wonderful - aromatic and incredibly juicy. The stone is small in size and can be separated from the pulp without any problems. Thanks to this, you can process the resulting harvest for subsequent harvests much faster and without difficulty. The tasting score of the Garland cherry is 4.7 points on a five-point system - gardeners describe the cherries as incredibly tasty and aromatic. It is also worth saying that the composition of the Garland cherry is quite rich and very beneficial for the human body, for its health, metabolism and immunity - the fruit contains dry substances, sugar and acids, as well as vitamin C, which has an excellent effect on various systems of the human body. The most important thing is that Garland cherries are really very tasty and can be combined with other berries or fruits, especially if the gardener prepares salads or preparations.

Cherry Garland: flowering, fruiting

The Garland cherry variety blooms in May, but it can shift to earlier or later dates - everything will depend on the conditions and climate in which this planting grows. But usually the deadlines are shifted either to the first half of the month or to the second; no other changes are provided. If the Garland cherry variety does not bloom for a long time, then the gardener should think about why this is happening, what is wrong with the plant, why it reacts to external conditions in this way, and what needs to be changed in order for the tree to produce flowers. The abundance of fruiting will subsequently depend on the abundance of flowering, so this factor is one of the initial and most significant.

If we talk not about the timing of flowering, but already about the timing of ripening of Garland cherries, then experienced gardeners and breeders themselves boldly classify this variety as a mid-ripening group. If those who call cherries medium-late. Here, again, a lot depends on the climatic conditions of the area in which this variety grows, as well as on whether the gardener himself was able to care for the cherries so that the tree produces a harvest ahead of schedule or on time. Hence the difference in estimates as to whether fruiting begins sooner or later. Sometimes it can be regulated - if you plant the tree in favorable conditions and regularly monitor it, implementing all the rules and subtleties of agricultural technology and care. The ripening of Garland cherries usually occurs in the second half of July, and if the cherries grow in very hot conditions, then the fruits can be harvested at the very beginning of July. In any case, many factors come together in such a way that fruiting may be a little “floating”.

Features of planting and care

Growing crops has a number of features. They must be taken into account to obtain a good harvest.

Recommended timing

When planting in spring, cherries should be planted at the end of April. In autumn this is done in mid-October.

Site selection and soil preparation

This plant requires open sunny areas located on a hill. It is important to ensure that there is no accumulation of moisture near the trees in the spring.

What crops can and cannot be planted next to cherries?

It is not recommended to place raspberries and sea buckthorn near the Garland. Ideal neighbors include different varieties of cherries. Other fruit trees are also acceptable.

Selection and preparation of planting material

Healthy plants that have strong roots without damaged fragments are suitable for planting. They should first be soaked in growth stimulants.

Important! Before planting, you should dip the roots in a clay solution for 6-7 hours to activate the growth processes.

How to plant correctly

To carry out planting work you need to do the following:

  • prepare a hole and add fertilizer to the bottom;
  • leave the hole for 2-4 weeks;
  • place a stake in the center;
  • place the seedling in the hole and cover it with soil;
  • compact the earth near the trunk;
  • tie the trunk to the stake;
  • pour plenty of water.

After planting, the tree needs to be watered well.

Watering and fertilizing schedule

After planting, cherries need to be watered frequently and abundantly. Mature trees need to be moistened only in dry weather. In autumn, moisture-charging irrigation is performed.

Timely application of fertilizers is of great importance. To do this, you need to fertilize the cherries with humus and ash in the fall. In spring, the plant needs nitrogen fertilizing.

Important! Cherries require a minimal amount of phosphorus. This should definitely be taken into account when applying mineral fertilizers.

Trimming

Formative pruning is required in the spring. In this case, you need to remove young branches and shoots. In the fall, they get rid of diseased and dried fragments.

The plant needs to be pruned promptly

Preparing for winter

If you grow the Garland in the recommended areas, the tree does not need to be covered. In this case, it is permissible to protect the trunk from hares with burlap or straw.

Diseases and pests, methods of control and prevention

Garland cherry variety is moderately susceptible to pest damage. To avoid trouble, you need to find out what insects are attacking crops in your area and carry out preventive spraying with the appropriate insecticides.

Garland almost never gets sick with moniliosis, it will be enough to carry out preventive treatments: in the spring, along the green cone - with copper-containing preparations, in the fall, after leaf fall:

  • in the south - copper-containing preparations;
  • in the northern regions - iron sulfate.

In places where autumn is long and warm, a third treatment is carried out before the onset of frost - with iron sulfate.

Stability, advantages, disadvantages, variety specifics

Initially, the Garland cherry was bred as a planting that would have high immunity and stress resistance, and would be able to withstand a disease such as coccomycosis - a fungus that develops very actively and, accordingly, which can lead not only to the loss of a bountiful and tasty harvest, but also to death the entire planting. If the year is rainy and there is a lot of heavy wet precipitation, this may lead to the tree becoming infected with fungus, but this can be avoided - it is enough to carry out preventive and health measures and treatments to make the trees feel much more comfortable and safe .

If we talk about other diseases and dangerous infections, as well as pests, then in principle it is worth saying that the Garland cherry variety has an average level of resistance to them, but still the gardener should not ignore preventive measures and treatments that will help protect the tree itself , future harvest. So you need to be very attentive to such conditions, and the result will not take long to arrive. In addition, experienced gardeners recommend organizing treatments and preventive measures in the spring, when the Garland cherry is already waking up after winter and can best accept all medications or other substances, interventions from gardeners that can in one way or another affect the plant and its condition .

The variety has its advantages, but also disadvantages. Among the advantages of this planting is that the variety is absolutely self-fertile, which means the planting does not require additional pollinating varieties to demonstrate a high level of fruiting. The second advantage is that the berries turn out to be very tasty and large; much will depend solely on subjective assessments and the tastes of the gardeners themselves, so everyone should try to grow a planting on their own plot, and then decide whether the fruits are large enough and tasty enough, and is this tree worth the effort and time that the gardener himself puts into it? It is also worth saying that the yield of the variety is high, but this can only be achieved through care and attention from the gardener himself.

But the Garland cherry variety has no disadvantages as such - it also grows well in comfortable conditions, it is demanding in some activities and additional care if the plant is grown in conditions where there is no climate stability and there are sharp temperature changes. Although experienced gardeners say that, in general, plantings react absolutely calmly to such conditions, sometimes they need the gardener to provide additional fertilizing and simply maintain the vital activity of the planting with the help of treatments. But otherwise, the Garland cherry is a wonderful plant that has rules for planting and subsequent care that are quite standard for cherry crops. We will take a closer look at the subtleties of plant care and tell you what the agricultural technology of this beautiful tree is.

Sometimes fruiting can be postponed until the third year after the seedling has been sent into open ground. Again, many aspects mainly depend on agricultural technology and on whether the gardener himself was able to create a microclimate for planting in which it would be very comfortable and good. Otherwise, Garland cherry, in principle, has similar features to many other felt varieties, but you should never confuse them with each other, because differences can occur in any case. The berries have an attractive presentation and contain many substances useful to the human body - dry substances, acids (ascorbic and titratable), as well as pectins, which have a positive effect directly on human immunity. One thing we can say about one varietal feature is that so-called twin fruits can form on the tree. Not one berry, but two at once can be attached to one stalk. This is mainly due to the fact that flowers can form not one, but two pistils and, accordingly, each pistil is capable of fertilization. It all looks very attractive and even a little fabulous, so the variety really enjoys some popularity among gardeners who love to please themselves with such small, but very cute little things.

Basically, the Garland cherry variety is recommended for growing in the North Caucasus region. And today it is still being tested in various territories. The variety has already settled in the south of the Voronezh region, as well as in the north of the Rostov region. Gardeners predict that if the variety continues to be actively cultivated, there is a high probability that the results will not be long in coming. In general, the Garland cherry has very great potential, and over time it can really become quite popular, which means the planting area will expand. Next, we’ll talk a little about the intricacies of agricultural technology, planting and care, since this information is really essential for studying by any gardener - both experienced and those just taking their first steps in growing fruit and berry crops.

Cherry Garland: reviews from gardeners about the variety

  • Antonina Semenovna, Sverdlovsk region: “I have been growing the Garland cherry variety for 10 years now and would never exchange it for another cherry variety. I like that although the Garland cherry requires care, I haven’t encountered any particular difficulties in growing it. It is also impossible not to note the excellent taste of the berries of the Garland cherry variety, and the variety’s yield is high. I feed my Garland cherry several times a season, I noticed that with such feeding the harvest is larger and the berries are more beautiful.”
  • Anastasia Viktorovna, Samara region: “For a rich cherry harvest, Garland has found many areas of application. In general, Garland cherries are considered very versatile berries; they have a very pleasant, pronounced cherry taste of the dessert category. I also use Garland cherries fresh immediately after picking the fruits from the tree, and I also make drinks, juices and compotes from cherries. In addition, the fruits of the Garland cherry are wonderful for preparing for the winter; in addition, they can be frozen. They do not lose their taste and external characteristics for a long time. I advise everyone to grow the Garland cherry variety in their dacha, you won’t regret it!”

Subsequent care of the crop

After planting the cherry Garland, the seedling is watered abundantly and often. An adult plant needs this only in dry summers. In the fall, moisture recharging is carried out.

During the first years, the soil under the cherry tree is regularly loosened. When the Garland begins to bear fruit, ground covers can be planted under it.

The best feeding is the autumn application of a bucket of humus and a liter jar of ash into the tree trunk circle. It contains all the elements a cherry needs. Mineral fertilizers are applied as follows:

  • nitrogen - in spring;
  • potassium and phosphorus - in autumn.

Important! Cherries need little phosphorus; this should be taken into account only when feeding with minerals - organic ones are perfectly balanced.

In the regions recommended for cultivation, the Garland variety does not need shelter for the winter. But it needs to be trimmed regularly - formed before the sap begins to flow, sanitation is carried out as necessary.

The trunk is protected from hares by burlap, straw or by installing a special metal mesh.

Cherry Garland: variety yield

By the way, I would like to say a few words directly about the productivity of the Garland cherry. This cherry can be called early-fruiting, since you don’t have to wait long for the harvest. The trees grow to large sizes quite quickly, and fruiting occurs in the fourth or fifth year after the seedling was installed in open ground. At this time, the height of the Garland cherry tree already reaches three meters, then growth slows down, but it is still there, and every year the tree adds several centimeters. In favorable conditions, up to ten kilograms of large and ripe berries can be harvested from a five-year-old cherry tree. According to this indicator, the Garlyanda cherry is ahead of many other cherry varieties, which are also very popular today, and gardeners strive to improve them. They have something to compare with in such an abundance of plantings, and there are indicators to focus on. In this regard, cherries really managed to get ahead of many of their brothers, and even their parent crops.

The average yield of Garland cherries is approximately 45 centners per hectare of land. On an industrial scale and in appropriate plantings, you can collect about one hundred centners per hectare of land. Again, plantings and their saturation depend on the purpose for which the gardener decided to grow this variety on the site. These can be small garden areas that can accommodate from one to two trees, or there can be industrial plantings, when cherries are grown not only for consumption and processing for their own purposes, but also for mass production and sale of fruits in markets and supermarkets. Accordingly, this may change the methods of care, the form in which planting is carried out and, of course, the amount of harvest from one plot, per hectare of land, changes. If we talk about average numbers, the maximum yield of one adult Garland cherry tree varies from ten to twelve kilograms. The average lifespan of one tree can reach up to fifteen years. If the cherry planting took place in the southern region, then the tree can live longer than twenty years and, accordingly, the fruiting period can also significantly extend.

History of the origin and development of the breed

Back in the 10th century. In France, large long-haired dogs called Briard Shepherds were used to herd sheep and protect farms. The name comes from the area in which they were bred - Briard.

Briard is a graceful and beautiful dog

For your information! These smart and independent dogs coped with herding sheep without human help.

During World War II, strong and courageous Briards were used at the front. They helped carry out the wounded and deliver provisions to the front. The consequence of this was a sharp reduction in the number of Briard Sheepdogs. Subsequently, with the help of dog breeders from France, the breed not only increased its numbers, but also gained worldwide popularity.

Characteristics

  • The variety has good precociousness. If you use antipka as a rootstock, then 3 - 4 years after planting our heroine will delight you with the first harvest;
  • In terms of ripening time, the described variety belongs to the mid-early variety. In the south of the Central Black Earth region, the berries ripen at the end of June;
  • flowering occurs late, so there is no need to worry about return frosts;
  • The crop's productivity is good, increasing every year. The yield of the first four years will average 8.7 kg per tree. Cherries that have entered the period of full fruiting will increase the yield to 24.7 kg per tree. In the most favorable years, this figure increases many times and amounts to 55 - 60 kg per tree;
  • in the south of the Central Black Earth region, winter hardiness allows you to grow Garland without fear, because even in the most unfavorable years, freezing did not exceed 2 points. But the generative buds of the variety are less stable, although in the south of the same region their death was not observed during normal winters. But this happened in harsh winters. Thus, in the winter of 1978 - 1979, when frosts down to -32.2 ° C were recorded at the end of December - beginning of January, 56.4% of flower buds died. In the winter of 1986 - 1987, with February temperatures dropping to -36.7°C, 85.0% of the generative buds died;
  • Overall immunity is good. The variety is highly resistant to moniliosis. But the ability to resist coccomycosis depends on growing conditions and weather. In normal years, in a well-lit and dry place, if a plant is affected by this disease, the damage does not exceed 1.5 - 2 points. But if the tree grows in a flooded lowland or the year is very wet, then the level of damage can reach 4 - 5 points;
  • drought resistance is insufficient;
  • The plant is considered self-fertile, so it does not need additional pollination. But it’s still better to have another cherry tree in the garden, blooming at the same time as the Garland. This will only improve the quality of the harvest;
  • transportability indicators are low. The soft pulp is not able to withstand long-term transportation. For the same reason, long-term storage is impossible (except for freezing);
  • method of use is universal. Ripe berries are used in their natural form, but the variety is still more suitable for processing. For example, compote is rated 4.4 points in appearance and 4.2 points in taste. The jam is very tasty; juice and wine are also made from the fruit.

Before choosing cherry tree litter, attention is paid to the plant’s resistance to frost and drought, productivity, pollination of inflorescences and resistance to disease.

The cherry tree does not tolerate drought well. Therefore, the soil should not be allowed to dry out. But the plant tolerates frost well. The garland can withstand even severe frosts. The shoots begin to freeze if the temperature drops below -30 degrees.

The variety belongs to the mid-early variety. The first red berries are harvested in late June. Garland is one of the first to bloom in the garden. Many gardeners claim that the hybrid does not require pollinating trees. But, as a rule, in the south more than one tree grows in the garden, so pollination occurs in any case.

After planting a seedling, the plant begins to bear fruit in the 3-4th year. The first few years the yield is low, but as the tree grows the yield increases. A young tree produces up to 7 kg of fruit. Gradually this figure grows and ranges from 25 kg per fully formed tree. The maximum harvest that can be harvested from Garland is 65 kg.

The resistance of cherries to diseases of fruit crops is average. The variety often suffers from coccomycosis. An exception is the monilial burn. The hybrid is immune to this disease.
