Strawberry Sweet Mary XXL and “Sweet Evi”: description of varieties and reviews about them

Remontant varieties of strawberries are considered less capricious to care for and are better able to withstand weather surprises. Strawberry Evi 2 is no exception; the variety has increased resistance to temperature changes and has excellent taste. The second name of this variety is Sweet Evi, which means “sweet Eve”.

The name Eve is derived from the first letters of nursery owner Edward Vinson Limited (Kent, GB). New varieties bred by the family firm since 1990 all start with EV and include Everest, Everglade, Eve's Delight

Description of the variety

Evi 2 will appeal to gardeners who want to enjoy sweet, fragrant berries throughout the warm season. Due to its good frost resistance, the variety can be grown equally effectively both in the south and in the north.

Variety Evi 2 is the result of a program carried out in the UK to develop an improved daylight neutral variety for the northern European climate

Bushes

Strawberry Evi 2 looks like a compact, spreading, rounded, dark green bush of strong growth energy with peduncles slightly rising above the leaves. It produces very few whiskers. They are not enough to propagate strawberries; if necessary, you have to resort to dividing the bushes.

Medium size flowers. The diameter of the calyx and corolla are the same. The diameter of the inner cup is larger than the diameter of the outer one.

Berries

The dense, egg-shaped berries are colored deep red with a strong glossy sheen and have a white-pink center. The average weight of the fruit varies between 15-35 g. The pulp is hard and very dense. The taste is harmonious, sweet and sour, with a pleasant aroma. The seeds are pressed into the pulp and do not protrude beyond the surface of the fruit. Transportability and keeping quality are high. The berries are prone to cracking during rains and are difficult to separate from the cup.

Evi 2 strawberries make fragrant jam. In compotes, the berries do not fall apart into fibers and give the drink a beautiful color

Productivity

Sweet Evi is a mid-season variety and produces its first wave of harvest at the end of June. The ovaries form before autumn. As long as the necessary conditions are present (average air temperature from +18℃ to +35℃), strawberries will bloom and produce fruit again. An average of 5 kg is obtained per square meter per season. berries

An interesting feature of the Evi 2 variety is the huge number of flowers, which presents gardeners with a choice:

  • do not touch the flowers and get a lot of small berries;
  • pick off some of the flowers and collect large fruits, but in smaller quantities.

On a balcony or windowsill, Evi 2 looks like a potted crop and will bear fruit all year round.

Evi 2 is often credited with being closely related to the Seascape variety. This is wrong. Evie is a variety of English origin, and Seascape is of American origin (California)

Description and characteristics of the berry

This variety has the shape of a round, compact and spreading bush. Not too much foliage, rather long flower stalks. The absence of a mustache leaves the only method of reproduction by dividing one bush into several.

It bears fruit almost all summer, starting in mid-June. The bush bears hard berries. When ripe, they have a rich red color and a white-pink core. The average weight is from 15 to 25 grams, they are dense and hard enough to not be afraid of denting them. The berries taste sweet and sour and have a pleasant aroma.

The fruits ripen almost simultaneously, yielding about five and a half kilograms of berries per square meter. They are resistant to transportation and can be stored in refrigerators for up to 72 hours.

This variety is drought-resistant and not afraid of heat, however, excess sun and lack of moisture negatively affect the berries, making them small and less juicy.

a brief description of

Advantages of the variety

  • the berries are beautiful and tasty;
  • the crop is well transported and stored for a long time;
  • the compactness of the bushes allows you to plant a large number of plants in a small area;
  • not afraid of winter frosts;
  • can be grown in one place for 5 years;
  • high immunity to fungal diseases and rot, moderate susceptibility to leaf spot;
  • If desired, the harvest can be obtained all year round.

Disadvantages of the variety

  • firm flesh, even crunches;
  • during the season of heavy rains, the berries crack;
  • A large harvest can only be obtained with regular fertilizing and watering.
  • weak resistance to root blight;
  • does not respond well to hot, dry weather during crop formation.

The almost complete absence of tendrils complicates the process of plant propagation. This is considered a disadvantage. On the other hand, this feature makes maintenance easier.

General characteristics of Sweet Evi strawberries

The description of the variety should begin with the fact that Sweet Evi is a remontant variety that bears fruit several times a season. The berry is known among summer residents for its unpretentiousness, therefore it can be used for cultivation both in open ground and in suitable greenhouse conditions.

The fruits of the berry are distinguished by a bright, red color with rich pulp. Thanks to its dense structure, Sweet Evy berries are suitable for long-distance transportation. The fruit sizes are average and usually reach 20 grams. The yield is also average in terms of indicators; up to 2 kg of ripe fruits are collected from one bush with high-quality care. Despite the average performance in terms of technical characteristics, Sweet Evy has earned a leading place among remontant varieties of Dutch production in terms of taste criteria. In addition, the berry is characterized by increased resistance to garden pests and fungal diseases.

Despite its artificial origin, Sweet Evy strawberries have a number of important differences and advantages:

  1. Well preserved strawberry variety. For example, under standard storage conditions in the refrigerator, the crop will last up to 3-4 days.
  2. Good, memorable taste, bright aroma.
  3. The variety is resistant to fungus and a range of garden pests.

Landing

Evi 2 is planted in open ground at the end of April, when the threat of return frosts has passed. It is important to do this before the arrival of persistent heat. You can plant a plantation at the end of July or in August, depending on the region, so the bushes will have time to develop before frost and will actively bear fruit the next season.

Choose bright sunny areas where beans, garlic, dill, parsley, and hyacinths previously grew. Cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbage, and potatoes are undesirable.

The best planting scheme using the two-line method:

  • between bushes the distance is 25-35 cm;
  • between rows 70-80 cm.

Fertilizers are applied to the soil before planting (per 1 sq. m):

  • 10 kg of compost or humus;
  • 2 liters of vermicompost;
  • 0.5 kg of wood ash.

The holes are filled with water before placing plants in them. After planting, water and mulch the root area again.

According to statistics from breeders from Oregon, Evie 2 ranks 2nd in the combination of fruit quality and size among all remontant varieties.

Top dressing

Garden strawberries - the best varieties, growing in open ground

During the planting period, the plant is fed with a mixture of mullein and ammonium sulfate, with a bucket of water containing 1 tablespoon of ammonium sulfate and two glasses of mullein. It is also possible to feed with a 10% solution of mullein and chicken manure diluted in a ratio of 1:12.

When the strawberries are already beginning to bear fruit, they are fed with a mixture of two tablespoons of nitrophoska and one teaspoon of potassium sulfate per bucket of water, or:

  1. Ash in a ratio of 100g per bucket of water.
  2. Two tablespoons of potassium nitrate diluted in a bucket of water.

In late autumn they change again:

  1. 10% mullein solution mixed with half a glass of ash.
  2. A mixture of two tablespoons of nitroammophoska, 30 grams of potassium sulfate and a glass of ash, which are dissolved in a bucket of water.

Growing and care

Evi 2 will grow and bear fruit without care, but a good harvest can only be obtained with competent agricultural technology.

Watering

Watering is carried out early in the morning or in the evening, when the heat subsides. The best results are obtained by using warm water. It takes 12 liters per square meter of beds with loose soil. watering can. For heavy clay soils - at least 15 liters per square meter. A drip irrigation system gives the best results.

The amount of watering depends on the weather. During the rainy season, watering is stopped completely; in persistent heat, strawberries need to be watered after 2-3 days.

Loosening, weed control

Loosening and timely removal of weeds is a prerequisite for a good strawberry harvest. The procedures can be made easier if you mulch the soil with organic material (straw, rotted sawdust). The modern method of mulching is with non-woven breathable fabric - spunbond. They cover the beds before planting a plantation. Cut holes for the bushes. This practical fabric perfectly allows air and water to pass to the roots, but does not allow pests to multiply in the soil and weeds to grow. It lasts for a very long time, it is removed only when it is necessary to transplant the strawberries to another place.

Removing a mustache

The strawberry variety Eva-2 produces very few whiskers; there are no problems with their removal.

Top dressing

The first feeding is done in early spring, immediately after the snow melts. Nitrogen fertilizer will help remontant strawberries increase the required amount of leaf mass. Nitrogen is obtained from organic or mineral fertilizers:

  • Dilute 0.5 liters of cow dung infusion in a bucket of water. Water at the root 1 liter per plant.
  • “Nitroammofoska” is used as a mineral fertilizer at the rate of 1 spoon of the mixture per bucket of water. No more than 0.5 liters are required per bush. fertilizers

During the flowering period, it is recommended to spray the bush with a solution of zinc sulfate at a concentration of 1 g per 5 liters. water. An effective fertilizing during the fruiting period is to spray strawberries with boric acid (2 g per 5 liters of water).

Fresh or dried nettles are placed in a container halfway, filled with water and left for 7-10 days. To feed strawberries, 1 liter of solution is diluted in a bucket of water. This fertilizer is useful for strawberries from May to August.

Pros and cons of the variety

The advantages of the Sweet Evi variety are:

  • resistance to cold;
  • good taste of fruits;
  • long shelf life and transportability of berries;
  • versatility of purpose, berries can be eaten fresh, processed and frozen;
  • yield 1-2 kg per bush;
  • duration of fruiting - you can get fruits from May to October;
  • resistance to weather conditions and diseases.

Disadvantages of the variety: it produces few runners, which can become a problem if propagation is necessary; the berries can crack after rains.

Pest and disease control

Strawberry Evi 2 is vulnerable to late blight and blight. Diseased parts of plants are removed and burned, and the beds are treated with fungicides. Safety precautions should be observed when using chemicals. They cannot be used during the fruiting period.

To prevent snails and slugs, the beds are sprinkled with tobacco dust or wood ash. If you plant garlic or onions between the rows of strawberries, this will protect the bushes from many diseases and repel pests.

Preparing for winter

Strawberries of the Evi 2 variety tolerate cold temperatures down to –22℃ under snow. If the frosts are more severe, cover with sawdust, pine needles, or agrofibre is required. In winter, snow is shoveled into the beds.

Reproduction

Due to the small number of runners, seedlings of the Evi 2 variety are obtained by dividing the bushes. A mature bush is dug up. Carefully cut into 2-3 parts using sharp pruning shears. Each new seedling should have a rosette of leaves and a young root. Old bushes that are more than 5 years old are replaced with new plants. The most effective option would be to plant a new plantation after green manure.

Propagation by seeds is a time-consuming and not always effective method. The germination rate of seeds of the Eva 2 variety is not the highest; strawberries will not transmit all varietal characteristics through the seeds.

Reviews

I grow several varieties of strawberries. In terms of taste, I highlight Evi 2, which is as good as my second favorite – Murano strawberries. But Cabrillo is inferior to these two varieties. What I don’t like about Evie is that she practically doesn’t have a mustache. I removed the flower stalks and gave them increased nutrition with nitrogen, but still there are practically no whiskers.

Strawberry Evi 2 is suitable for all climate zones and shows good frost resistance. With good watering it will not suffer from the heat. The variety is ideal for growing indoors and in heated greenhouses. Evi 2 is ready to give the gardener a rich harvest with comprehensive care throughout the year and is one of the stable averages that do not show any great results, but can complement any collection of varieties.

The best varieties of ampelous remontant strawberries

As a rule, decorative strawberries are not characterized by high yield and immunity from diseases. However, breeders have developed extraordinary varieties that have excellent taste and also allow you to harvest a good harvest. They withstand winter frosts and are also resistant to various bacteria and viruses. These varieties include Home Delicacy, Queen Elizabeth, Toscana and Kletter Star. Excellent hybrids have also been bred, such as Roman, Elan, Balcony Flow, Balcony Charm and Fresco.

Tuscany or Toscana

This variety has been known to the world only recently, but even in such a short time, it not only won the love of many gardeners, but also became the winner of several world competitions. It has a fairly compact bush and high yield, as well as incredibly tasty ruby-colored fruits. Bushes can grow up to 30 cm in both width and height. Young shoots often reach a length of about 1 meter. The variety is usually grown in open beds. Some people plant Tuscany on their balcony or indoors. It looks very beautiful in clay pots and other decorative containers.

Homemade delicacy

This strawberry belongs to the climbing decorative varieties. She ripens quite early. The fruits are not particularly large, but very tasty, slightly sour. The berries stand out well against the background of the leaves, thanks to their rich red hue. Suitable for growing on terraces and window sills. You can plant strawberries in pots or special boxes.

Queen Elizabeth II

It has a powerful, strong bush, as well as dense, beautiful fruits. The berries are very large and juicy, can weigh up to 40 grams each. The shape of the fruit is regular, the skin is smooth and shiny, red in color. The taste is simply excellent. Fruiting is long lasting. During the season, this ampelous large-fruited strawberry can yield 2 or 3 times. The variety should be replanted every year and a half.

Kletter Star or Kletter Star

An excellent Dutch variety of garden strawberries. It is a compact plant with highly placed flowers. During fruit ripening, the berries fall to the ground under their own weight. Each fruit can weigh up to 60 grams. The berries have a bright red color and very juicy dense pulp. There is a pleasant strawberry aroma. The berries are easy to transport and are rarely damaged during transportation. A large number of tendrils may form on the bush, but this in no way prevents the strawberries from bearing fruit. The variety is drought-resistant and can winter without shelter.
