Berry care
For seedlings, it is necessary to maintain a certain temperature.
During growth and flowering it is 13–15°C, and during the ripening period it should vary from 21 to 25°C. The length of daylight hours for ampelous strawberries is 12–14 hours, so during the cold period the room should be equipped with additional light sources.
Watering should be done as the soil dries. In summer, 1-2 times every 7 days; in winter, in a heated room, increase as needed. To increase humidity, you can use trays of water or carry out daily spraying.
Fertilizing has its own nuances. It is a misconception that careful care and large amounts of fertilizer increase yield. On the contrary, adding nutrients to the soil promotes the growth of green mass, and the berries become smaller and lose their taste.
Timely care and moderate soil fertilization are necessary for:
- improved growth;
- increasing flowering and ovaries;
- increasing yield and improving taste;
- protection against viruses and infections.
You can prepare a mixture rich in microelements yourself using the necessary ingredients, or buy a ready-made composition that contains all the proportions of the necessary nutritional components.
Growing
The best way to plant hanging strawberries depends on many factors. For example, for what purpose is it grown? If you want to decorate your home or garden, it is better to use seeds and immediately grow them in vases, pots, pyramids, cassettes or flowerpots. To harvest, it is better to purchase seedlings from mother bushes.
The soil for propagating ampelous strawberries should be neutral acidity, well-drained, and light. A place is chosen without drafts, illuminated for 8 hours.
In pots from seeds
Growing ampelous strawberries from seeds is suitable for apartment conditions. The plant germinates under any conditions. The bushes are unpretentious and give a good harvest. The shoots don’t need to be rooted, just let them hang down. They can receive nutrients from the main bush. The shelf life of seeds is 5 years, but after 2 years they lose their germination quality. Therefore, it is recommended to choose packaging material that is no more than 7-10 months old.
Before growing ampelous strawberries from seeds, you should prepare the soil. For seedlings, take a ready-made mixture or prepare it yourself. The main thing is to enrich it with micronutrients, which are freely sold in the store. Germinate mono seeds or sow dry. Moisten with a sprayer and place glass on top.
The glass is removed 2-3 times every 7 days to ventilate the soil. After 3 leaves appear, the plant is picked. Planting ampelous strawberries and further care does not take much time. The main thing is to maintain soil moisture. Stronger bushes can be transplanted into flowerpots 2-3 months after planting the seeds.
Knowing how to care for ampelous strawberries, you can harvest throughout the year.
In a bed of ready-made seedlings
How to properly grow ampelous strawberries from seedlings? After acquiring the mother bushes, most of the greenery is removed. Prepared beds are fertilized with a mixture of sand, humus and turf. Spill with a light manganese solution. The soil is shaken off the bush, long shoots are cut off at the roots. The root itself is treated with “Heteroauxin” and deepened by 3 cm. The root shoots should not be allowed to remain on the surface of the earth. Strawberries are watered as the soil dries out only with warm water. The cold will slow down growth.
Knowing how to care for ampelous strawberries, you can harvest throughout the year. 80% humidity and 7-10°C are optimal development conditions. During fruiting, humidity should not be higher than 50-60%, temperature 20-25°C. The plant does not tolerate excess water, so it is better to water it in a tray. This will prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged.
It is recommended to fertilize once every 2 weeks. It is better to dissolve fertilizers in water. You can feed with boric acid, ammonium nitrate, zinc, copper, and potassium permanganate. After the first harvest, the lower leaves are cut off. This improves plant growth and increases subsequent harvests. Caring for ampelous strawberries depends on the selected varieties and planting method.
Having studied the information on how to plant hanging strawberries, how to care for and propagate them, every gardener will be able to not only decorate his garden and the facade of his house, but also reap good harvests of berries.
Diseases and pests: control and prevention
Strawberries are often attacked by insects. The berries are attacked by nematodes and strawberry mites. Signs of mites are wilting of leaves, reduction in the size of berries. The following drugs are used to kill insects:
- actellik;
- fufanon;
- Nero.
Treatment is carried out three times with an interval of 1 to 1.5 weeks. If treatment does not work, the bushes need to be dug up and burned.
If the fruit has become hard and the stem is dense, it means that the strawberry has become a victim of a nematode. There is no cure for this parasite; all bushes are destroyed.
Among diseases, the berry is susceptible to fungus. Its treatment consists of treatment with fungicides.
Prevention of diseases and pests means regular, proper care, fertilizing, and treating the bushes in the fall and spring with Bordeaux mixture, which is a mixture of copper sulfate and milk of lime.
Growing options
Planting is carried out through seeds or seedlings.
Important! After the first flowering, the lower leaves and buds are cut off.
The best varieties of ampelous large-fruited strawberries for growing
The ampelous type of strawberries is represented by many varieties, but only a few of them are popular among gardeners:
- Rikla. Fruiting is early and single. The berries are very sweet and large. The height of the bush is average. The leaves are light green. The antennae are long and their number is small. The petals are white. The average berry weight is from 20 to 25 g;
- Elsanta. This is one of the most productive subspecies. 1 bush produces up to 2 kg of strawberries. The first berries have a light tip;
- Tarpan. The height and diameter of the bush is no more than 30 cm. The tendrils are long, up to 1 m. Tarpan is characterized by high productivity. The shape of the fruit is elongated, cone-shaped;
- Victoria ampelous is a common variety with large fruits. The variety has high frost resistance, but the berry is sensitive to spring frosts. Loves abundant and regular watering. Disadvantage - the collected fruits have a minimum shelf life;
- Temptation. Low dense bushes. The peduncle is large, the berries are large in the shape of a cone. The aroma has notes of nutmeg. Temptation - frost-resistant strawberries that do not tolerate drought and heat. It is recommended to plant it in a place where there is no direct sunlight;
- Delis. A new subspecies, bred by agricultural technicians in 2016. 1 bush produces up to 1.5 kg of yield. The fruit is round and large in shape with a distinctive aroma;
- Laurent. Blooms and bears fruit very early. The leaves are dark green. Fruits from mid-June until the first frost. The ideal option is to grow strawberries in pots.
Diseases and pests: control and prevention
Pests and diseases are an integral part of growing any type of plant. For strawberries, the most common are the following:
- strawberry nematode. They are small worms from 0.5 to 1 mm. Due to their fault, young leaves curl and cuttings become short;
- strawberry mite. In the presence of this insect, the berries become small and the leaves become wrinkled;
- spider mite You can recognize it by the appearance of cobwebs around the plant.
- aphid. The leaves curl and dry out;
- late blight Leaves begin to show signs of necrosis along their edges;
- powdery mildew. The leaves curl into a tube and a coating appears.
Important! Spraying against all types of diseases and pests should be carried out before flowering and fruit formation.
Types of strawberries by size of berries
Reproduction and planting
Strawberry Cascade reproduces, like a regular berry crop, with the help of mustaches, which are produced in huge numbers. The tendrils are rooted, and they are immediately ready to bloom and bear fruit.
Strawberries of this variety are planted both in spring and autumn. Summer planting would be preferable - in late August - early September.
Many people plant Cascade strawberries not only in beds, but also in boxes. The soil needs to be fertile. When growing a variety in a garden bed, choose a sunny place on the site, with no exposure to cold winds. Low, marshy places are not suitable for strawberries. Plant the Cascade on previously prepared soil. The soil for strawberries is prepared using the usual steps:
- remove weeds from the site;
- dig up the ground;
- apply organic and mineral fertilizers.
The planting scheme for Cascade strawberries is as follows:
- between plants – 35-40 cm;
- between rows – 80 cm.
Seedlings are placed in holes dug in the garden bed. The roots are straightened. Sprinkle with earth, compacting it around the plant. Water each bush generously.
Variety selection
For planting, you should choose the varieties “Baron Solemacher”, “Alexandrina”, “Tuscany”, “Sunny Princess”, “Temptation” and others. These species are able to grow in any conditions, delighting the owner with a large harvest. Let's look at the most common types.
"Tuscany"
This variety is a prize-winner and winner of world agricultural exhibitions. Its compact size has made Tuscany a favorite of gardeners who grow crops on the balcony. The height of the upper leaf cover is 25 cm, and the shoots reach a meter in length, so it is suitable for growing in hanging pots. This climbing strawberry is famous for its juicy and sweet berries, as well as its intense yield.
"Baron Solemacher"
This variety of berry is suitable for growing on a loggia in the warm season. The main advantages of the variety:
- winter hardiness;
- stability of the harvest until the first frost;
- bisexual flowering;
- neatly formed bush;
- absence of antennae.
"Baron Solemacher" has another important quality that is necessary for plants grown and bearing fruit in the warm season - resistance to heat. If you forgot or by coincidence were unable to moisten the soil in time, the plant will not die, but there is no need to lead the situation to cracking of the surface layer. This hybrid is resistant to various diseases and pests, and therefore does not require constant treatment with chemicals. "Baron Solemacher" prefers mineral fertilizers, which saturate the soil with nutrients.
"Alexandrina"
This variety of strawberry has established itself as an unpretentious plant that tolerates small temperature changes. If you care for it properly, you can harvest several harvests of delicious berries during the growing season.
The main condition for planting this species is proper care and plenty of sunlight. Therefore, this type of plant should be planted in the spring-summer period, and it bears fruit until mid-autumn.
A distinctive feature of the culture is the decorativeness of the bushes. Rich, bright greens with small berries are suitable for decorating open balconies and loggias.
Varieties
Fruitful varieties that are resistant to mold, fungi and bacteria are considered popular among gardeners. Their fruits are sweet, large, and ripen quickly. They have the shape of a ball, cone or pyramid. The average weight is from 20 to 30 g. You can easily choose the appropriate variety for yourself. Names of the most common types of fruit plants:
- Tuscany;
- Temptation;
- Queen Elizabeth II;
- Temptation;
- Ostara;
- Eternity;
- Kletter Star.
Some of them are hybrids, so they do not reproduce by seeds.
Selection of material and its planting
The seed method is rarely used by amateur gardeners. It is long-lasting, therefore it is used mainly by breeders to develop new varieties. The mustache propagation method helps to preserve all the original characteristics. Preparing seedlings for planting in pots should be done in the fall. The seedlings obtained from the mustache will have grown by this time.
Rooted rosettes should be carefully examined and healthy, full-sized and large ones should be selected. The rosette is separated from the donor bush and excess leaves are removed from it. Planted in a prepared pot. After this, the bushes are left alone and lowered into the basement for 10-14 days.
Next, planting in a pot proceeds according to the following algorithm:
- Holes are made in the container, expanded clay is laid and a little prepared soil is poured.
- Strawberry roots are dipped for a few seconds in a weak solution of potassium manganese.
- The seedling is placed in a pot and its roots are straightened. If they are too developed and do not fit freely, it is permissible to trim them.
- Add soil to the growing point.
- Water the plants.
If you spill a culture planted in a pot with the Kornevin solution, you can significantly increase the survival rate. This must be done if the root system has been pruned.
You need to care for the crop before fruiting begins in the following way:
Watering is carried out with settled water at room temperature 2-3 times a week. It is necessary to control the soil moisture and prevent it from drying out. Fertilizing is provided once every 2-3 weeks with special mineral compounds for berry crops
You can use organic matter, but with extreme caution. It is important not to overfeed the bush. Fertilizer application is stopped after harvesting; the plant needs rest to recuperate. The tendrils are regularly removed from the bushes if there are no plans to expand the home planting
To increase the yield of a remontant crop, you need to remove the first few buds from the bush. Pollination is carried out. The easiest way is to use a regular brush. With its help, pollen is transferred one by one to all flowers. The procedure is carried out throughout the entire flowering period.
Please note that you can see the first ovary on strawberry bushes planted in pots already 40 days after rooting of the seedlings
Advantages and disadvantages
Slowly but surely, ampelous varieties are winning the favor of gardeners. Culture is valued for its many virtues :
- long-term yield of berries (remontability);
- high yield rates;
- large fruits;
- excellent taste, sweetness;
- unpretentiousness;
- possibility of growing at home;
- decorativeness. Even if it was not possible to grow berries, lush green bushes with hanging mustaches in the interiors and on the site look very beautiful.
Few disadvantages:
- For all its unpretentiousness, the crop is still very demanding on soil fertility. On poor soils (substrates), you should not expect a bountiful harvest and large berries;
- requirement for regular rejuvenation of plantings (preferably once every 2-3 years);
- It is impossible to take seeds from hybrids for subsequent propagation.
Ampel strawberries - care and cultivation + video
Preface
Ampel strawberries are an excellent option for any gardener. It has a number of advantages: it produces a rich harvest and is an excellent decorative addition to your garden. Another unique feature of the berry is the possibility of growing it in apartment conditions.
Ampel strawberries have a number of features. The main difference from other varieties is the simultaneous fruiting of not only the plant itself, but also its tendrils. This property also requires special planting.
If you also choose remontant varieties, you will be able to harvest a rich harvest of berries several times a season. And if you grow the plant at home, you can enjoy the delicious berry in December.
Strawberry tendrils do not entwine the supports, which must be taken into account when growing them. As a rule, they need to be tied up. This is another feature of the berries.
Ampelous strawberries in pots
You cannot plant the plant with other varieties of strawberries, as they can become smaller and lose their original properties. To plant new bushes, you should take only the healthy, largest tendrils from fruit-bearing bushes.

Planting ampelous strawberries
You can plant ampelous strawberries in several different ways. In general, planting and caring for plants are distinguished by their simplicity and unpretentiousness. The most common method is planting in pots or flowerpots. This method allows strawberries to grow with the greatest convenience. The plant's tendrils hang down, ensuring maximum freedom. During flowering and fruiting, ampelous strawberries look very beautiful. By installing such plants in your garden or apartment, you will get a stunning look.
There are no special requirements for the pot. The main thing is that it is deep, at least 30 cm high, and holes need to be made in the bottom to allow excess water to drain out.
Planting ampelous strawberries in the garden
The second way to plant strawberries is to grow them on a trellis. Landing is carried out as follows. Sprouts are planted in the ground. A grate is installed nearby. Moreover, various designs can be used as it: wicker fence, gratings, nets. The grown mustache is tied to this lattice. The height of the structure should not be more than 1 meter.
And the third landing option is the pyramidal method. In this case, it is necessary to prepare several boxes of different sizes. For example, a box measuring 20x20x20 cm, 30x30x30 cm and 60x60x60 cm. The boxes are stacked on top of each other and covered with earth. Bushes are planted in free space at a distance of 20 cm from each other.
You need to plant ampelous strawberries as follows. First, the sprouts must be sprinkled with soil and left in a dark place for two to three weeks. After this, they can be planted in the ground or pots. If planting is carried out in pots or flowerpots, then drainage must be laid at the bottom.
Planting ampelous strawberry bushes
Strawberries should not be planted too often; they should not be buried deep in the ground. The soil must be fertile and soft. It is best to plant in mid-summer. If strawberries are planted in early spring, then they should immediately be protected from frost on the soil. To do this, plants need to be covered with film or covering material.
Caring for ampelous strawberries
Ampelous large-fruited strawberries are not whimsical.
Therefore, caring for it is quite simple and easy. The first flower stalks need to be removed, and you can tear them all off. Excess antennae are also trimmed. To get a good harvest, it is enough to leave 5-6 mustaches.
During growth, strawberries need to be fertilized. But don't be too zealous.
Strawberries need to be watered sparingly. During fruiting, watering should be reduced. In this case, water should be poured under the roots, excluding it from getting on the leaves and flowers. If the plant is planted in pots, then you need to pour water into the tray, let it sit for about 10 minutes, and then remove the strawberries from the tray.
Watering strawberry bushes
Ampel strawberries are resistant to winter cold, but before their onset they need to be additionally covered, for example, with mulch. Plants in pots need to be buried to the brim. If there is space in the house, then move them indoors. When planting on a trellis, you need to untie the tendrils and carefully place them next to the bushes, and cover the top with mulch or hay.
Planting ampelous strawberries in a pot
When growing strawberries in an apartment, you need to pay attention to pollination of the plant, since the process will have to be done with your own hands. To do this, you just need to touch all the inflorescences with a brush
Features and benefits of the plant
Ampel strawberry is a descendant of ordinary strawberry, which was bred by crossing, and its main feature is that the fruits appear not only on the stems, but also on the tendrils. They form rosettes with flower stalks, which allows harvesting almost all year round. It is classified as a climbing plant conditionally - in order for the shoots to curl around a support, they need to be tied up, but despite this, the crop has many advantages over garden varieties.
Climbing strawberries are often used for room decoration
- Most varieties of this variety of strawberries are remontant, that is, they can bear fruit several times a year, and when grown indoors they can bear fruit throughout the year.
- The plant is undemanding to growing conditions, in particular to lighting, so it can be planted even in places that are not fully illuminated by sunlight.
- The berry is distinguished by its high yield - its fruits are slightly inferior in size to the fruits of ordinary garden strawberries, but superior to them in taste.
- Ampelous strawberries can be grown on high structures, which prevents the tendrils and berries from coming into contact with the ground, and, accordingly, the appearance of some diseases and rot.
- The plant is an original decoration for the home interior, and as a bonus the owner receives delicious berries.
Ampelous strawberries can be grown on tall structures
Despite the fact that climbing strawberries are considered an easy crop to grow, they require compliance with certain rules and conditions.
Advice! When cultivating hanging strawberries, you will have to make a choice between the decorative qualities of the plant and its yield. If the bushes are not cut off the extra tendrils, they will not be able to cope with the increased load and will not be able to bear fruit to the full - in this case, the plant will have a large amount of lush greenery, but the number of berries will decrease.

Landing
At the planting stage, caring for ampelous strawberries requires virtually no effort. Growing climbing strawberry bushes in pots is the most common way to maintain this plant. Planting is usually done at the end of July - August. The desired container size is about thirty centimeters deep. There must be holes made in it for water.
A layer of drainage is placed at the bottom of the flowerpot or pot, and then covered with prepared soil. Don't plant strawberries too densely or too deep.
A bush of such strawberries, grown in a pot, looks very decorative due to the flowering and fruiting tendrils that beautifully go down the walls of the pots.
It is also possible to grow climbing strawberries directly in the beds. The sprouts are planted at a distance of at least thirty centimeters from each other. With this method, you can either simply let the mustache spread along the ground or tie it to supports, or come up with some more decorative option for their location.
For example, a grate is often used for these purposes, preferably no more than a meter high. A low wicker fence would also work. Whiskers grow in random order between the cells of the lattice and gradually entwine it all. In some places it may be necessary to additionally tie the plant to this support.
Some people also create pyramid beds for growing strawberries. Three boxes of different sizes are placed on top of each other. Big at the bottom, then medium, and at the top the smallest. The sizes are selected so that the plant has enough space for normal growth and development. All three containers are filled with soil, after which strawberries are planted in them.
For any planting option, it is recommended to use a soil mixture: peat and turf in a 2:1 ratio with the addition of a small amount of sand. You can also buy ready-made strawberry soil instead. After planting, the plants must be watered abundantly.
How is it grown?
Ampel-type strawberries are grown in different ways - in cache-pots, pots, vases, vertical cassettes, pyramids. The latter are constructed from any available means - barrels, pots, etc. Lawns are also decorated with this crop, forming bushes into trellises.
The plant looks great in winter gardens and on balconies - you can make a continuously fruiting arch from it. Bushes can also be planted in open ground, but this growing method is used much less frequently.
Landing requirements
In order for ampel strawberries to grow and bear fruit well, they are provided with optimal growing conditions:
- soils are light, drained, with neutral acidity (5.2-5.5 pH);
- 8-10 hours of sunny day - in a too shady place the crop may stop bearing fruit;
- absence of drafts;
- crushed green manure - nasturtium, mustard, rapeseed, phacelia - are added to the soil used for planting.
When planting hanging varieties, the seedlings should not be planted too deep and close to each other.
If planting is done in the ground, and even in early spring, then it is important to prevent it from freezing on the soil by covering it with film or other covering material.
Planting methods and instructions for them
Seedlings are usually planted in April-May or August. Methods for growing ampel strawberries:
- In pots. For planting, select a container such that there is 1,500 cubic meters per adult plant. cm of soil. Next, they begin to prepare the substrate; it is prepared from sand - 1 part, turf soil - 3 parts, peat - 6 parts. To improve fertility, the soil is fed with organic matter. You can also buy ready-made soil in a specialized store. In order for the seedlings to take root as quickly as possible, before planting they are removed to a dark place, buried in the ground. There are no special requirements for the pot, the main condition is a height of 30 cm. Holes are made in the bottom so that excess water can flow out. The following is the planting order: Place a thin drainage layer on the bottom of the pot. Expanded clay, pebbles, broken bricks are suitable. The prepared soil mixture is placed on top.
- The seedling is immersed in a container - the roots should be located vertically, and sprinkled with earth.
- Seedlings planted in pots are watered abundantly.

growing strawberries on a trellis
planting strawberries in pyramid-shaped beds
“vertical beds” (growing strawberries in bags)
Let's assume that it is decided to plant strawberries in 3-liter pots with further cultivation in a greenhouse. Work order:
- Place the pots with a height difference of 70-80 cm. If the height of the greenhouse is about 2.5 m, 3 lines of strawberries will fit in it. The intervals between adjacent pots are 40 cm.
- The greenhouse is equipped with drip irrigation.
- The optimal temperature in the greenhouse is 19-25°C. At higher temperatures, complete pollination does not occur.
- When the plants bloom, the greenhouse is opened for better pollination of non-self-fertile varieties. If the varieties are self-fertile, then the greenhouse must constantly maintain high humidity - at the level of 90%.
If the greenhouse area is 1-2 acres, then the total harvest will be 5 buckets, which is half as much as when growing ordinary strawberries.
Why doesn't it bear fruit?
- Poor pollination. Ampelous garden strawberries require artificial pollination, especially when grown indoors. For example, remontant strawberries of the Eternity variety will not bear fruit if they are not pollinated properly.
- Depleted soil. With poor feeding or its complete absence, the plant stops bearing fruit and developing. An insufficient amount of minerals and nutrients affects the appearance and taste of the delicacy.
- Diseases and pests. Pests and fungal diseases of the plant can cause great damage to productivity and fruiting. Preventive treatments will protect the crop from damage.
General information about culture
The name of the culture is of German origin, from the German language “ampel” means “lamp”. After the culture was bred, it was used as a decorative element, and for cultivation they used plant pots and flower pots, which were hung from the ceiling like a lamp. Ampel strawberries are distinguished from other varieties by a number of features that have made them one of the favorite species among gardeners:
- In most cases, ampel strawberries include only remontant varieties, due to which the crop can be harvested until the growing season ends.
- The crop is capable of bearing fruit both on tendrils and directly on peduncles.
- In low light conditions the berry feels great.
- The group of hanging strawberries includes varieties that are grown vertically. They not only produce juicy and tasty berries, but also serve as decoration for the home, which allows even city dwellers to grow berries on window sills or balconies.
Note! Some gardeners consider the ampelous type of strawberry to be a variety that climbs, but this definition is controversial. In order for the supports to completely wrap around the plant's tendrils, they need to be tied.
When growing varieties of ampelous strawberries, gardeners often face several problems, namely the fact that the crop requires individual placement and frequent replanting. Strawberry seedlings must be planted on a separate plot of land and under no circumstances mixed with other varieties of crops. After every 3 years, the bushes will require replanting into fertile and fresher soil. And if this is not done, the fruits will decrease in size and lose their beneficial properties.

Basic rules for planting strawberries in the Moscow region
Residents of the Moscow region should plant strawberries in the second half of July for better survival. As a last resort, this process is carried out in September. The optimal temperature for planting is +15…+25°C. You can plant strawberries in the spring - from the end of March to the first half of April. A sunny, windless place is chosen for it. This plant crop prefers light chernozems, loams and sandy loam soils.
Groundwater should not be closer than 1 m to the ground level. The first step is to prepare the area for planting. To do this, soil is disinfected using manganese. Then, per 1 m², 20 kg of humus and 100 g of potassium chloride and superphosphate are added to the soil. The planting process itself is best done in cloudy weather, as direct rays of the sun have a negative effect on the plants.
Important! When choosing a site, you need to observe crop rotation. You should not plant this sweet berry after nightshades and root vegetables, as well as after the strawberries themselves.
Good predecessors are dill, lettuce, parsley, radishes, celery, and cabbage.
The planting scheme for remontant strawberries is as follows:
- one-sided cultivation - row spacing of 0.5 m, and a gap of 0.3 m between plants;
- double-sided planting - between beds 0.8 m, between plants 0.2 m, between rows 0.3 m;
- vertically in pipes.
Humus and wood ash are added to the planting holes.
The planting material is carefully placed in the hole and covered with soil, slightly compacting the soil. The apical bud should be located at ground level
Then watering is carried out at the rate of 1 liter of water per 1 plant. At first, watering is carried out more often so that the planting material is well accepted.
Transplantation into open ground
Planting ampelous strawberries in an open place is done at the same time as transplanting them into decorative containers, but it is first important to correctly determine the location for the plant. The best option is an area in the southwestern part of the garden or vegetable garden, which is well lit by the sun and ventilated, but without strong winds and drafts. The place should be on a slight elevation - if there is none, you can build high beds with your own hands.
Special requirements are placed on the soil - its acidity should be in the range of 5.7-6.2 pH, and the depth of groundwater should be about 80 cm. If the soil is too wet, it is recommended to drain it - excessive amounts of moisture will cause the plantings to become sick and can quickly die.
The bushes are planted at a distance of 30-35 cm from each other, after which they need to be lightly buried with earth and watered abundantly. If it is very hot outside when planting a plant, the plantings should be protected from the sun for about a week. When growing ampelous strawberries in open ground, the tendrils can be allowed to spread freely along the surface of the soil or tied to a lattice structure or fence.
Growing ampelous strawberries
ampel strawberry
If your goal is to obtain a fairly large amount of planting material, whether just for yourself or for commercial purposes, then it is convenient to use the seed propagation method. Growing strawberries by seed is quite convenient.
This will allow you to get a lot of strong young bushes. And if you sowed your seeds early, then there is a chance that you will receive a harvest this same year.
In addition, if you use the method of propagation using whiskers for a long time, there is a risk that your plants will accumulate various viral diseases.
As for seeds, such misfortunes can almost never be transmitted with them.
It is important to know that you should not collect the seeds that are on hybrid strawberry bushes. It may happen that the varietal characteristics of the mother plant may not be preserved
If you purchase strawberry seeds at a garden store, remember that the germination period of such seeds is quite short. So you need to plant the purchased seeds in the same year. Because they may simply not get up to the next one.
Strawberry seeds are sown, as a rule, in January - maximum February.
It is very important to choose the correct composition of planting soil. The soil for planting should not be heavy and should allow air to pass through well.
Do not bury the seeds into the soil as they are very small in size.
Seeds can only germinate lying on the top of the ground in good light.
As a rule, peat-based soil is used. It won't hurt if you add more coconut fiber there. Sprinkle some river sand on top, which needs to be properly calcined beforehand.
Some gardeners do the following for better germination: cover the top of the soil with a thin layer of snow, then lay the seeds on top of the snow. This is necessary so that when the snow melts, the seeds seem to rush to the soil, while simultaneously moistening.
Place glass or film on top of your crops and put them in a well-lit and fairly warm room (temperature +24 degrees). Every day, be sure to ventilate your crops, while removing your shelter for five to ten minutes.
Shoots may appear within a week. But this is not always the case; sometimes you have to wait 15–20 days for sprouts. After your seeds have hatched, your containers with plants should be placed in a bright place.
There should be at least twelve hours of daylight per day.
Do not forget about daily ventilation of the seedlings. The glass or film can finally be removed at the moment the first two true leaves on your plants open.
Watering seedlings should be moderate. It is best to use a syringe or pipette for this. If you over-moisten the soil, there is a risk that the plants will get blackleg.
After your seedlings are born, maintain a temperature of approximately +18 degrees.
As a rule, seedlings need to be planted a month after the seedlings appear. They need to be planted in separate small cups. By this moment, the plants should have at least three true leaves, however, the bushes are still not large in size.
With the help of picking, the plant will begin to grow more actively. This is necessary so that in the days of May you can fearlessly plant your strawberry seedlings on the site.
Before your seedlings go into open ground conditions, be sure to feed your plants more than once. Usually a complex of mineral fertilizers is used for these purposes.
Diluted manure is also suitable, to which you can add wood ash.
Provided that the seeds were planted for seedlings in winter, in January, then in May the first flowers and buds will most likely appear.
How to care for ampelous strawberries?
To harvest a bountiful harvest several times a year, it is important to properly care for the plants. For this purpose, you need to know the following requirements:
It is important to observe the temperature regime, so for seedlings of ampelous strawberries before flowering, 10-15°C is enough. When the berries begin to ripen en masse, it is worth maintaining 22-25°C
In this case, the air humidity should be about 60%. For ampelous strawberries, lighting conditions are important. During the period of flowering and fruit formation, the duration of daylight should be at least 14 hours. In cold times, it is recommended to take care of artificial lighting and heating.
Caring for ampelous strawberries in winter
When growing plants outside, it is important to take care of covering the bushes for the winter, especially if the temperature drops to -20°C and there is little snow. This is important to prevent the roots from freezing
Covering is necessary during regular frosts, but if the temperature rises, it is better to clean the bushes to prevent damping off. Large-fruited ampelous strawberries can be covered with pine spruce branches, hay, straw, dry leaves and agrofibre.
Garden ampel strawberries - soil
It is important to use soil that is enriched with mineral fertilizers, nitroammophos, saltpeter and cow manure. You should focus on the following proportion: for 10 kg of soil, fertilizers are required in the proportion of 15:20:1000 g
Before planting ampel strawberries, the soil must be sifted so that it becomes “airy”. As a soil mixture, you can use peat and turf mixed in a 2:1 ratio with the addition of a small amount of sand. Another option is to use prepared soil for strawberries.
How to feed ampelous strawberries?
Since almost all varieties produce abundant fruiting, after it the bush is depleted, so it needs abundant and regular feeding. Growing ampel strawberries involves adding nitrogen and potassium to the soil. As for phosphorus, it only needs to be fed once - before planting. Feeding is carried out according to the following scheme:
In the third ten days of December, urea is added to the soil
It is important to use a 1% or 2% formulation. In the second half of June, it is necessary to water the bushes with liquid cow manure or chicken droppings. Together with organic fertilizers, it is recommended to use mineral additives, for example, “Solution” or “Crystallin”.
Ampel strawberries - watering
It is important for this crop to receive regular watering. It is necessary to ensure that the soil is moist, which will promote the rapid growth of young foliage
There are several rules for watering:
- To increase fruiting, after harvesting remontant strawberries, you should trim them and start watering the bushes with warm water.
- It is recommended to irrigate the soil at sunset or in the morning to protect the plant from sunburn. After this, the soil must be loosened and mulched.
- You cannot water the bush from above, so pour water under the root. If you neglect this rule and liquid gets into the center of the rosette, the plant may die.
- The frequency of watering is determined by the condition of the soil; if it slightly sticks to your hands, then everything is fine, but if it crumbles, then irrigation is carried out.
- During fruiting, strawberries should be watered once every five days. It is best to give preference to drip irrigation.
What is ampelous strawberry
Let's start with terminology, this will avoid confusion. Firstly, the berries growing on our plots are not strawberries, but garden strawberries. The fixed name is erroneous, since real strawberries (a dioecious plant) can only be seen among collectors.
The crop in a number of regions of Russia is also called Victoria (after the name of the first variety brought into the country), so if you do not indulge in botanical research, it is quite possible to talk about synonymous words.
Secondly, ampelous strawberries are often classified as climbing species, but this is incorrect. There are no vines in the Strawberry genus from the representative Rosaceae family, so all the colorful advertisements about climbing varieties are just a well-thought-out advertising ploy. The resemblance to vines in this variety of strawberry arises from the long tendrils on which the berries are formed.
Ampelous garden strawberry (strawberry) is a variety bred by breeders, characterized by compact bushes and long tendrils with fruiting rosettes. The tendrils hang down, but do not curl, and as the leaf mass and shoots grow, the impression is created of cascading waves of greenery with bright berries.
Interesting facts about strawberries and characteristics of varieties
The ampel type is considered one of the most delicious. In addition to the magnificent aroma of berries, which are preferably used in cooking, they are very beneficial for health:
- have minimal caloric content, but at the same time they saturate well, so they are recommended to be consumed during diets;
- beneficial effects on health: normalization of blood pressure, improvement of the digestive system, acceleration of metabolism, increase in muscle tone;
- providing wound healing and disinfecting effects;
- Strawberry extract is one of the ingredients in many cosmetics - masks and lotions, soaps, tonics.
The ampelous type of berry is much tastier and more aromatic than other varieties of strawberries.
Climbing strawberries: care and cultivation
Climbing strawberries are not whimsical, but without proper care at all stages of development, you will not get a good harvest. This is especially true for fertilizing, since the shoots feed from the mother bush, and if fertilizer is not applied in time, the berries will begin to shrink.
Landing
It is best to plant seedlings in April-May or August. Before planting, you need to select the appropriate size container to provide adult crops with space for a root volume of at least 1500 cubic cm.
Climbing strawberries are planted in vertical cassettes, pyramids built from pots, barrels, and they are also formed into trellises and used to decorate lawns. Thus, Kletter Star-2000 looks great in containers on a balcony or winter garden, and Frapendula will turn a terrace or glazed veranda into a continuously flowering and fruit-bearing arch.
Next, they begin to prepare the soil. The following mixture is suitable as a substrate: sand, turf soil and peat, take the number of components according to the proportion 1: 3: 6. Or they use soil from a specialized store. Seedlings are planted in containers filled with soil. Here the distance plays a very important role - between the rows and in the rows is at least 150 cm, and from the edges and walls of the box to the first row of seedlings - 75-80 cm.
At the end of planting, the strawberries are watered abundantly. If the weather is hot, then the boxes are moved to a shady place for 5-7 days or covered with available material (newspapers, cloth). To create a favorable microclimate, wire arcs are installed on top, to which a plastic film is attached.
They also carefully monitor the temperature conditions, they should be like this:
- at the beginning of the growing season - during the day plus 7-8 degrees Celsius, at night 5-7 degrees Celsius, humidity 80%;
- during mass fruiting (July-October) - during the day plus 22-25 degrees Celsius, at night 20-22 degrees Celsius, air humidity 60%, soil humidity 80%.
The whiskers are periodically removed, leaving those that are necessary for further fruiting or reproduction (optional). The mustache extending from the uterine bush is cut off completely with the exception of two rosettes. Typically, the length of shoots of longline varieties reaches 250-300 cm, and those capable of flowing upward - 1.5 m.
Watering and fertilizing
During the season, strawberries are moistened twice a day (morning and evening), using 01-0.5 liters of water per plant. They feed it every 15-20 days. Prepare root fertilizer as follows: ammonium nitrate (30 g), superphosphate (180 g), boric acid (40 g), potassium permanganate (20 mg), zinc (2 mg) and copper (1 mg).
In July, after receiving the first berries, the leaves and flowering buds are cut off at a height of 2-5 cm from the horn. This procedure increases the second harvest several times. Three-year-old bushes, as soon as they bear fruit, are dug up along with the capacity of the container, and in their place young ones are planted in a new substrate, using the same method. For the winter, ampelous large-fruited strawberries are covered with thick fabric, polyethylene, or other suitable material or transferred to the basement, where they are stored at a temperature from minus 2 to plus 2 degrees Celsius.
By planting hanging strawberries in your house or on your balcony, you will decorate your home and delight your family and friends with your favorite berries when the season is long over. This type of strawberry is especially suitable for winter gardens and insulated verandas; it is also used to decorate arches and ceilings. Follow the simple rules of care and recommendations of our specialists and enjoy the excellent sweet fruits and beauty of ampelous strawberries.
Agricultural technology of culture
Unlike varieties of traditional species, ampelous strawberries are planted in flowerpots, in pots, and placed in greenhouses, on loggias, and verandas. When growing, they arrange original compositions, receiving double benefits: decorating a house or apartment and a good harvest of berries.
Landing
Care and cultivation are simple, but to obtain good harvests it is necessary to create comfortable conditions for the plants. Regardless of where they are grown, strawberries need fertile and loose soil. Acidity indicators are neutral, the soil is light, well-drained. When planting seedlings in pots or containers on the balcony, use a ready-made substrate or make your own soil mixture.
In open ground on the street, select a place well lit by the sun, without drafts and away from beds with other varieties of garden strawberries.
On a note! Ampelous strawberries, according to gardeners, do not like intense heat, so a little shade is allowed in open ground.
Planting is done in rows, at a distance of at least 35 cm. If they want to “send” the mustache up, then a mesh with large cells or a trellis (trellis) is installed nearby, to which the mustache will be tied.
At home, strawberry seedlings are planted using a variety of containers:
- pots (height at least 30-35 cm, with holes in the bottom for drainage);
- boxes;
- balcony containers;
- flowerpots.
When growing strawberries in greenhouses, they set up “pyramids” of containers, plant plants in vertical pipes, bags with holes, and barrels. In this case, it is necessary to provide a water supply system, as well as high-quality drainage to remove excess moisture from the substrate.
Seedlings are usually planted in spring or August, taking into account climatic conditions and the characteristics of a particular variety.
Care
Caring for plants is not difficult, the main measures are standard:
- watering;
- feeding;
- pruning
The beds are additionally loosened, weeded, and mulched (if film is not used). Water moderately, monitoring soil moisture levels. Like many other crops, strawberries do not tolerate severe drought and excessive moisture.
In the first case, the number of fruits decreases, their pulp becomes tasteless, insipid, and unsweetened. When overwatered, even this infection-resistant species is often affected by disease, and the berries become watery in taste.
Plants in hanging pots are watered through trays. This way the bushes will take the required amount of moisture, but it will be possible to avoid stagnation of water in the soil. In the greenhouse and on the beds in the garden, drip irrigation systems are used to provide the plants with an optimal watering regime.
The crop is fed with mineral complexes and organic matter. The latter is more suitable for planting on the site, while in an apartment it is advisable to use ready-made nutrient mixtures for strawberries or mineral fertilizers.
In the initial period, plants need nitrogen supplements (diluted bird droppings, ammophosphate), then, starting from the moment of flowering, potassium and phosphorus fertilizers are applied. Feeding with poultry droppings with wood ash, as well as ready-made compounds (Gera, Kemira) gives a good effect.
The frequency of fertilization is once every 12-15 days. If necessary (for example, in cloudy weather), foliar spraying of the leaves with a solution of boric acid and potassium permanganate is used.
Be sure to loosen the soil in the beds and remove weeds. It is recommended to mulch the soil with hay or sawdust, and also to grow strawberries under film. With this option, contact of the berries with the soil surface is eliminated, weeds do not grow, and planting care is simplified.
Basic techniques for pruning bushes:
- removing the first flower stalks to increase overall yield;
- trimming the lower leaf blades after the first batch of berries has ripened;
- removing mustaches on a bush (2-5 are left for fruiting, the rest are cut off). Excess shoots take away the nutrition of the mother bush and slow down the ripening of the formed berries. The required number of whiskers is determined practically, since much depends on the growing conditions, lighting, substrate, and characteristics of the variety.
The fruiting of the crop is abundant and intense, so the plantings quickly deplete the soil and grow on their own. It is necessary to regularly rejuvenate plants and have a sufficient supply of seedlings. When cultivated for a long time in one place or without changing the soil, the plant sharply reduces its yield and the berries become smaller.
Reproduction
Where can I get seedlings of ampelous strawberries if only ordinary Victoria grows on the site?
The culture propagates easily, the options may be as follows:
- purchasing seeds, and then the labor-intensive procedure of growing your own seedlings in an apartment. The “plus” of this method is the opportunity to obtain seedlings of the variety you like, healthy planting material. The seeds of the crop quickly lose their viability, so it is advisable to use them in the year of purchase;
- purchasing seedlings from specialized nurseries (including frigo seedlings).
If you already successfully grow such strawberries, then the process is simplified. To propagate the variety, it is enough to root a pair of rosettes on the tendrils of the strongest and healthiest bushes, planting them in pots separate from the parent plant. The “kids” are moved to a shaded place for better adaptation, and the first flower stalks are cut off.
It is advisable to root the rosettes in May or early June so that the bushes grow before the fall. Then the pots are put away in a dark place (pantry, dry basement) and left without watering for the winter until the beginning of March. With the onset of warmth, the plants are taken out, kept in shade for about a week, then placed in a lighted place. They begin to bloom in about 1-1.5 months, and then the first berries are not far away.
On a note! From small containers, grown seedlings are moved to large pots, containers or to a garden bed.
What variety of strawberries produces crops all year round?
In heated greenhouses and even in an apartment, it is possible to grow strawberries all year round. However, not every variety is suitable for growing berries throughout the year. The best options are remontant varieties of garden strawberries and day-neutral plants.
Farmers leave good reviews about the following three varieties:
- Selva. The berries are distinguished by high commercial characteristics - burgundy uniform skin color, smooth round-conical shape, elastic and juicy pulp. The taste is similar to strawberry, sweet and sour. The weight of one copy is 30–60 g.
San Andreas. The variety was developed by Californian scientists 17 years ago. The fruits ripen of medium size, the weight of one specimen is 35–40 g. Gardeners manage to collect up to 2 kg of ripe berries from 1 m². San Andreas strawberries are often grown commercially due to their high yield and resistance to transportation.
An important advantage of the culture is its resistance to many diseases.
Lyubava. Plants give a large harvest - up to 2 kg per 1 m²
The weight of one fruit is average, in the range of 30–40 g. The variety is characterized by low-intensity bean formation. Agronomists call this an advantage - the tendrils do not need to be constantly removed, which makes caring for the plantings easier.
Important! When growing strawberries in apartment conditions, take care of the optimal microclimate for the crop. It depends on this whether the crop will set fruit all year round.
There are many varieties of strawberries and they are all good in their own way.
When choosing a variety to grow in your garden, pay attention to the fruiting characteristics and description of the plants. With the right choice of crop and proper cultivation, a rich and tasty harvest awaits you.
The best hanging varieties

*The symbol F1 means that the plant is a hybrid obtained by crossing two different varieties. Seeds are not collected from the hybrid for further cultivation. Since it is unlikely that you will be able to get a good harvest from such seeds, and other positive qualities will also not be passed on to the next generation.
**The symbol S1 means the first generation of the varietal plant. Simply put, S1 is the seeds collected from the 1st year harvest of a varietal plant. S2 is the generation from S1. S1 has higher yield and other indicators than S2 and so on.
Ampel strawberries - varieties, growing from seeds, features of planting, care, propagation
Strawberries are the most common berry in amateur gardens. In recent years, breeders have annually offered new varieties and hybrids of this crop. In addition to ordinary strawberries, continuous fruiting strawberries are also becoming popular.
Ampel strawberries, general description, characteristics
Ampel varieties are hybrids of large-fruited garden strawberries
, whose scientific name is pineapple strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa), and among amateur gardeners it is better known as strawberry.
Ampelous strawberries are distinguished by long creeping shoots, sometimes more than a meter long. When grown at height, the shoots hang down. They grow quite quickly and lay out rosettes almost continuously.
Simultaneously with the mother bush, new rosettes throw out full-fledged flower stalks. To do this, the rosettes do not have to touch the soil and take root in it. They will bloom even in a suspended state.
As a rule, in temperate climates, when growing strawberries in an ampel form, you can get two or three tiers of rosettes bearing fruit in the current season, and another 1-2 tiers of flowering or blooming ones. Very often one plant has flowers, ovary, green and ripe berries. Another name for this form of strawberry is cascade.
A container or flowerpot with several bushes of ampelous strawberries with flowering or fruiting rosettes hanging down on thin tendrils looks very elegant. Therefore, such plants are increasingly used as decorative ones, along with classic petunia
and other
plants for vertical gardening
.
When growing berries with continuous fruiting in hanging pots, in columns, in pyramids or in tiers on vertical walls, you can simultaneously ensure a harvest of tasty berries from June until frost and excellent decoration of the site throughout the summer.
Strawberry aroma, resistance to rain and frost add advantages to strawberries as a fashionable ornamental crop, and the varied colors of the petals of its flowers - from white to pink, red and crimson - and the ability to harvest delicious berries bring the ampelous strawberry to the first place in the ranking of plants for vertical gardening.
Climbing strawberries are often called climbing strawberries, which is not true. Climbing plants - vines, have organs or devices with the help of which they, clinging or entwining, climb up. Strawberry tendrils are creeping and flowing; to grow upward, they must be specially secured, so strawberries are not a climbing plant.
Another ampelous form of strawberries, which do not form or practically do not form a mustache, is also grown in hanging baskets and pots. Its characteristic feature is long flowing peduncles.
These plants are characterized by remontant
fruiting, that is, they look decorative all season - there are always flowers on the bush - different shades of white and pink, and berries - fragrant, tasty, of different shapes and sizes. When planted in pots or hanging baskets, cascading flower stalks effectively hang over the edge of the container and look elegant. Like ampelous strawberries, which form tendril-like shoots, strawberries with long, flowing peduncles can be used in the design of a garden, patio, balcony and loggia, planted in a container at a height. These plants have their own charm, however, they still cannot be called truly ampelous. They do not form long tendrils with flowering and fruiting unrooted rosettes. But it is thanks to the strawberry tendrils that a cascade of flowers and berries is created in vertical space.
Among the beardless strawberries
Not only large-fruited pineapple strawberries are suitable for planting in flower pots, but also alpine strawberries (Fragaria vesca) with small berries. Alpine strawberries are more frost-resistant compared to ampel varieties of large-fruited pineapple strawberries, they overwinter better in a container on the balcony, and in the spring they can be transferred to the garden earlier.
Among the varieties of ampelous strawberries, there are many that bear fruit regardless of the length of daylight hours, that is, regardless of the illumination. They can be grown in winter in greenhouses and rooms.
When grown from seeds, ampelous strawberries begin to bloom and bear fruit in the same year.
Varieties
Strawberries of ampelous varieties with continuous fruiting have long ceased to be a rarity. Today, manufacturers of seedlings, seedlings and seeds offer the following varieties:

Ampel strawberries, growing from seeds
Strawberry hybrids can be propagated vegetatively and by seeds. Hybrid seeds need to be purchased in special stores, while varietal seeds can be purchased or prepared independently.
Growing ampelous strawberries from seeds is carried out according to the general scheme for the crop. Sowing begins in February-March. They are guided by the rule: ripening of the berries will begin 4-5 months after sowing.
Soil preparation
To grow seedlings of ampelous strawberries from seeds you need: • fine-grained sand 3 parts; • humus, crumbly 5 parts.
Preparation: 1. All ingredients must be mixed well. 2. Place on a baking sheet or heatproof tray. 3. Place the container in the oven. Turn it on + 100 + 120 degrees and hold for about 3 hours. 4. Cool and pour a 9-10 cm layer into a small container with holes for water drainage.
Sowing seeds
Some gardeners advise stratifying strawberry seeds before sowing and keeping them in the refrigerator for 7 days to a month. However, you can combine this process with sowing into the soil. It is advisable to sow strawberries from late January to mid-April. Since seeds germinate in light, when sown in January-March, they may require additional lighting.
On the eve of sowing, compact the soil a little and water well. Gently place the strawberry seeds on top without deepening them. Considering the small size of the seeds, they can be mixed with pre-calcined sand and distributed superficially over the substrate without sprinkling it.
Sprinkle a 4-5 cm layer of snow on top of the seeds. Cover with transparent film and place in a cool place for a week. The bottom shelf of the refrigerator, where the temperature is not lower than 0 and not higher than + 5 degrees, is suitable.
After this, the containers must be removed and moved to a room where the temperature is + 22 + 23 degrees. The first seedlings can appear either after 7-8 days or after three to four weeks. All this time you need to monitor the soil moisture. When dry, it is sprayed with settled water using a spray bottle or a pneumatic sprayer, which provides a fine spray of water. Every day the film is opened and aired for 5 minutes.
Cascade
. The variety produces dark-colored large berries that are very decorative in hanging flowerpots. Thanks to their dense pulp, the berries are well preserved during transportation and do not become soft during processing.
When the seedlings become about 20 mm in height, the film from the planting containers must be removed. As soon as the second true leaf appears on the seedlings, they can be transplanted into separate cups and moved to a room where the temperature is not higher than + 14 + 18 degrees. Young bushes are planted in a permanent place after they have at least 6 true leaves.
The main care for strawberry seedlings is careful watering, without flooding. It is advisable to feed once with any complete fertilizer, for example, “Aelita strawberry”, observing the dosage for seedlings. This must be done 12-14 days after picking into cups.
article about growing strawberries from seeds
.
If you were unable to grow ampelous strawberries from seeds yourself, you can buy a ready-made plant in a flower pot, seedlings in a plastic pot, or seedlings with bare roots in the spring.
All remontant varieties of strawberries can be grown in a garden bed, where they produce higher yields without unnecessary “chemicals” compared to growing in containers. How to grow strawberries in open ground can be found here
. In the canopy culture, strawberries are, first of all, an ornamental plant; its cultivation has a number of features.
Choosing a method for growing ampel strawberries
The most convenient thing is to plant strawberries in flowerpots, plastic containers or wooden boxes. When filled, it is easy not only to fix them at a height, but to move them in the winter to a greenhouse or veranda, where the temperature ranges from -1 to + 2 degrees. Before winter storage, the mustache is cut off, and the uterine bushes are stored in daylight conditions.
There is another option for wintering strawberries. In autumn, the bushes are removed from the container and planted in open ground, covered with spruce branches, dry leaves or spunbond covering material. In the spring, at the beginning of the growing season, the plants must be dug up and transplanted into flower pots.
When grown in high vertical columns or very long non-dismountable horizontal containers, it will be very difficult to insulate strawberries so that they do not die in winter frosts in conditions of limited soil.
Planting ampelous strawberries
For the best taste, yield and decorative effect, containers with strawberries are placed in a sunny place. The proximity to flowering plants will attract more pollinating insects and is favorable for the formation of berries.
Two-month-old seedlings are planted in flowerpots or pots with a diameter of 35 to 50 cm, approximately the same height. You can plant 2-4 bushes in this area.
A drainage made of broken shards or expanded clay is placed at the bottom of the pot. To retain moisture in the soil, the walls of hanging baskets are lined with coconut fiber or moss - in the case of growing edible berries, or hydrogel and vermiculite are added to the soil - if strawberries are grown for decoration. The pot is filled with light and fertile soil with a neutral or slightly acidic reaction (pH 5.0–6.5), mixed with compost, fertilizer and sand. When return frosts occur, plants in containers are covered with non-woven material.
Features of care
When growing ampelous strawberries, you need to loosen the soil under it and monitor its moisture. The soil in the pots should not dry out, so in dry weather the plants will need daily watering, and in very hot weather they will need to be watered twice. Overwatering is also dangerous, as is excessive moisture getting on the plant itself, which causes the berries to rot. In wet weather, containers can be protected from bad weather or moved from the garden to the terrace.
► How to water and feed strawberries
Plants should be fed with mineral and organic mixtures once a month; it is better to use specialized fertilizers for strawberries intended for the fruiting period. If strawberries are grown for decorative purposes, and not for harvest, for rich flowering, a second additional fertilizing is carried out monthly with potassium fertilizers without nitrogen.
The crop is harvested as it ripens. To prevent the mother bush from weakening, it is advisable to leave 3-4 tendrils on it, and cut each tendril after 3-4 rosettes appear. But if decorative qualities are a priority, then you can shape the plant at your own discretion.
If you follow the rules for caring for strawberries in flower pots, you will have problems with diseases and pests
happen very rarely.
Reproduction
Three years after planting, the plant will have outgrown and will need to be replaced. To do this, you can re-grow ampelous strawberries from seeds (this and the new variety) or propagate vegetatively. For vegetative propagation, rosettes with roots are used, it is advisable to take the first or second from the bush. You can root rosettes throughout the summer. The rosette with roots is planted in a new bed or in a new container, without deepening its heart (growth bud).
► Reproduction of garden strawberries
Strawberryless strawberries are propagated by dividing the bush. The division must have leaves - at least three, at least one growing point and long roots.

Rules of care
Ampel strawberries are not particularly demanding to care for. In order for the plant to grow well and bear fruit, you must follow these rules:
- the very first flower stalks should be plucked;
- cut off unnecessary mustaches (you can leave 3–5 pieces);
- replant plants not too late in the fall and not too early in the spring to protect young seedlings from frost;
- do not overuse fertilizers;
- for the winter, bushes should be covered with mulch;
- pots with hanging strawberries should either be brought indoors for the winter, or buried in the ground along the edges of the pot;
