14 giants: large-fruited varieties and hybrids of tomatoes

Not only fishermen love to boast about their catch of unprecedented size - tomato growers also dream of “catching” a giant. However, for this it is not enough to simply follow the rules of agricultural technology and intensively “feed” the tomato bushes. To get large tomatoes you need to choose the right variety or hybrid.

There are a lot of varieties and varieties of large-fruited tomatoes - early and late ripening, for greenhouses and open ground, tall and short, requiring and not requiring pinching, for fresh consumption or for harvesting... Moreover, not all gardeners are chasing gigantism, many prefer large-fruited tomatoes measuring 400-600 g.

  • What types of tomatoes are there: classification of types, groups and varieties

    Different tomatoes are needed, different tomatoes are important!

In this material, we tried to collect descriptions and characteristics of the largest varieties of tomatoes, which have proven themselves recently and are loved for their remarkable yield, resistance to diseases and not the most complex agricultural technology.

Varieties of giant tomatoes

Among large-fruited tomatoes, the bushes of indeterminate varieties boast the most impressive sizes - with unlimited growth and a liana-like structure. Such characteristics are excellent for greenhouse cultivation of tomatoes, when the gardener can adjust the height of the bush himself and optimally use the greenhouse area without making the planting too extensive. As a result, from 1 sq.m you can get about 15 kg of fruit - isn’t it tempting?

There are few peculiarities of growing giant varieties of tomatoes; in terms of agricultural technology, they are almost no different from the cultivation of ordinary tomato bushes. You just have to remember that the largest fruits are always obtained from the first flower ovaries.

In any case, when choosing a variety of giant tomatoes to plant on your site, it is important to pay attention to the recommended growing conditions and the purpose of the fruit.

Growing seedlings

The seedling method is the most popular and optimal way to grow a high-quality bush. This method is applicable even for early-ripening varieties, but for mid- and late-ripening varieties it is mandatory.

Growing seedlings includes the following points:

  1. Purchasing or self-harvesting seeds;
  2. Preparation of seeds before sowing (rejection, disinfection, growth stimulation, etc.);
  3. Sowing;
  4. Picking;
  5. Care before and after picking;
  6. Preventive examination;
  7. Hardening.

Optimal timing for sowing

The most normal time for sowing planting material is considered to be 2-2.5 months before planting in a permanent place: late February - early March.

Seed treatment

Many people don’t particularly bother with the preliminary preparation of seeds. Meanwhile, this is perhaps the most important procedure. You can, of course, sow right away, but then see that some seeds did not germinate or were affected by some kind of disease. As a result, most of the seedlings are unsuitable for further cultivation. All this could have been avoided if the owner had carried out a number of procedures:

  • Rejection;
  • Disinfection;
  • Stimulation;
  • Hardening.

And now about each stage of preparation - separately:

  1. Rejection. This procedure is needed in order to understand which seeds are suitable for planting and which are not. To do this, the seeds are placed in a saline solution for thirty minutes (at the rate of 1 teaspoon per glass of water);
  2. Disinfection: will help young seeds not get sick during the process of germination and growth. To do this, take 200 ml of warm water and 2 mg of potassium permanganate. Time - thirty minutes. After the disinfection procedure, the seeds must be washed with running water and dried. Sometimes hydrogen peroxide or a soda solution is used: it will not only disinfect the seeds, but also help them germinate faster. The seeds are soaked in a soda solution (100 ml of water and 0.5 tsp) for 10 hours;
  3. Stimulation: why wait when you can treat the seeds to make them germinate faster. To do this, use either purchased drugs (epin, sodium humate) or natural ingredients (honey water, soda solution, aloe juice);
  4. Hardening: an optional procedure, but still often used. To do this, the seed is placed in the refrigerator for a couple of days.

Options for soil and containers for tomato seedlings

For seeds to grow normally, they need space. Until picking occurs, the seeds are grown in a low and spacious box. Plastic or cardboard cups, scraps of bottles or juice cartons are suitable for picking.

You can purchase soil or prepare it yourself. Most often, they use purchased soil mixture, since it not only contains all the necessary substances, but is also disinfected. Homemade soil options:

  • Turf soil mixed in equal proportions with peat and humus and a glass of water. Mixture weight - 10 l;
  • Peat, wood ash, potassium, urea and phosphorus (in proportions 10 kg + 1 tbsp + 10 grams of both + 30 grams);
  • Chernozem with sand mixed with potassium and phosphorus.

Sowing seeds

The sowing procedure occurs in several stages:

  1. The soil mixture is poured into the planting container, not reaching a few cm to the edge;
  2. Seeds are sown to a depth of no more than 5 cm, with a distance of approximately 2 cm from each other;
  3. The seed material is covered with film or transparent glass. High temperature and lack of air will provoke a greenhouse effect and high humidity, which will accelerate seed germination;
  4. The planting container is placed in a very warm and dark place.

Seedling care

As soon as the sprouts hatch, the film must be removed. Now the sprouts will need a lot of light, but a little less heat. If there is not enough light, the young plants must be illuminated with lamps, otherwise the seedlings will grow weak but tall. Light is provided to seedlings for 14 hours.

There is no need to water much. Excess moisture does nothing but harm. If the soil is too wet, it will develop mold or mildew. And this is the end of all seedlings. Only when the soil dries out can it be moistened with a sprayer.

Under no circumstances should you allow even the smallest drops to fall on the leaves: drops of water and high temperatures on the windowsill will cause burns on the leaves. In this case, the plant will die.

Hardening of seedlings

Not everyone resorts to this procedure. But plants need it vitally. In order for the bush to quickly adapt to open ground and tolerate temperature changes well, the seedlings need to be hardened off. This is how the plant itself and its immunity are trained. To do this, a couple of weeks before planting, the young animals are taken out to their permanent place. Or on the balcony (if you have an apartment), or in the yard.

The time spent on the first day is no more than half an hour. In the future, the interval of exposure to fresh air increases every day by 10 minutes. On the last day, the duration of the seedlings' exposure to fresh air should be approximately 1.5 hours or more.

Hybrids of giant tomatoes

Compared to the conventional varieties of tall, large-fruited tomatoes that we discussed above, F1 hybrids are usually less demanding to care for and more resistant to unfavorable growing conditions, pests and diseases. In addition, they are distinguished by an even and increased yield - if earlier we spoke about 15 kg per 1 sq.m of greenhouse, now we boldly say about 20-25 kg!

Unfortunately, you will not be able to continue breeding on your own plot - if we are talking about growing F1 hybrids, you will have to buy seeds in the store every year, because Seeds obtained and collected independently will either not germinate or will not have the required varietal characteristics of the mother plants.

Black Sea giant

This Russian red Gigant tomato is not the result of the work of breeders. The Black Sea variety was bred by amateur farmers. It is believed that its homeland is the Kuban region.

Dark red fruits are collected in clusters of 6-7 pieces. The weight of a ripe tomato varies from 600 to 1200 g. The fewer fruits in the cluster, the larger they are. The yield is 10 kg per bush, which makes the Black Sea tomato one of the most productive varieties.

Features of cultivation

The height of the semi-spreading plant is 2-2.5 m. Accordingly, it is necessary to build a support system or high trellises, which complicates the growing process.

The size of the fruit is adjusted by removing the ovary.

Advantages

The Black Sea tomato is resistant to disease and bears fruit regardless of weather conditions. Few supergiants can boast of this ability.

Tomato Big Beef F1

High-yielding mid-early indeterminate hybrid.

Tomato Big Beef F1
Designed for growing in film greenhouses. Resistant to tobacco mosaic virus, verticillium and cladosporiosis. Tolerates low temperatures well.

The plant is tall, strong, and can reach 2 m in height. Gartering and pinching are required. When forming, it is recommended to leave no more than 2 shoots. Productivity – 9.4 kg/sq.m.

Weight of tomatoes - 210-350 g. The fruits are flat-round, slightly ribbed, and when ripe acquire a bright red color. The pulp is fleshy, dense, tasty, sweet and sour, with a pleasant tomato aroma. The skin is dense, so tomatoes tolerate transportation and storage well.

Intended for fresh consumption, suitable for processing.

Russian size f1

In the early 2000s, Russian breeders introduced a hybrid with excellent taste characteristics and resistance to late blight, tobacco mosaic virus, and cladosporiosis. The plant is an indeterminate plant and grows up to 180 cm in height. In addition to strong immunity, the bushes are not afraid of night frosts, so in central Russia they can be grown not only under film covers, but also outdoors. The yield indicator is stable, less than 7-8 kg of tomatoes per 1 sq. m. does not happen.

The maturity stage occurs 125-130 days after the start of cultivation. Tomatoes are red in color with a glossy tint. The shape is round, very appetizing, weight - 350-400 g. There is no ribbing on the surface, the flesh is red when cut with a sweet taste. The variety is considered a salad variety and is also suitable for canning. Farmers grow the Russian size for sale; because of their attractive appearance, the tomatoes are quickly sold out. The positive qualities of the Russian size are:

  • high taste qualities;
  • correct form;
  • strong immunity;
  • stable yield indicator.

The main disadvantage of the variety is the late period of fruit ripening.

Tomato Main caliber F1

Determinate mid-season hybrid.

Tomato Main caliber F1
Designed for growing in open ground and under cover. Resistant to many tomato diseases and adverse weather conditions. Productivity – 10-13 kg/sq.m.

The bush is strong, powerful, reaches a height of just over 1.5 m, after which it stops growing on its own. In open ground, it is recommended to form the plant into 1 stem.

The fruits are large, round in shape, slightly flattened. The weight of one tomato ranges from 500 g to 1.5 kg. In a state of biological ripeness, they acquire a rich crimson color, although sometimes bright red tomatoes are also found in this hybrid.

The pulp is slightly grainy, sweet, juicy. Has excellent taste. The fruits are most often used fresh, but they can also be used to make juice, paste or sauce.

Giant tomatoes - giant tomatoes without a greenhouse in the open ground

It turns out that it is possible.

Bolshakova Galina Sergeevna, a 45-year-old well-known gardener in Transbaikalia, shares a unique way of growing giant tomatoes without a greenhouse.

Favorite variety of tall tomatoes

My husband and I grow tomatoes both in a greenhouse and in open ground. In open ground they grow tall in our country. Our favorite tomato variety is De Barao, which is cold-resistant, shade-tolerant and very tall.

We tried to grow it in a greenhouse, but its height (2.7 m at the ridge) was not enough for the plants. They literally “squeezed out” the top glass in the roof of the greenhouse and “burst” out.

Giant site decoration

That's when we decided to grow them outdoors. And for 20 years De-Barao has been one of the decorations of our site, growing to 3.5-3.8 m or more.

The technology for growing giant tomatoes in open ground is somewhat different from growing ordinary tomato varieties.

Sowing giant tomato seeds

De Barao sowing dates are early: February 20-25. This allows seedlings to be planted in open ground at the age of 80 days.

Preparation of seeds and soil mixture is the same as usual. I sow the seeds to a depth of 1-1.5 cm at a distance of 1.5-2 cm from each other, and 5 cm between rows. I cover them with soil and do not water them.

I put the boxes with the crops in a warm place (22-23°C) and cover them with film.

Temperature for tomato seedlings

When the shoots appear, I place them in the brightest place by the window on a specially installed board and adjust the temperature by covering or opening the heating radiator, so that at night the temperature is 13-15°C, and during the day - 16-18°C.

At this temperature, I grow seedlings for 7-10 days, and then I raise the temperature slightly: during the day to 18-20°C, and at night to 15-16°C.

When preparing large-volume pots, I always add 0.5 tsp to the soil composition. superphosphate. This stimulates the development and formation of the root system. After transplanting, I water the seedlings abundantly until the entire volume of soil is completely soaked.

Watering giant tomatoes

I keep seedlings in this mode until they are 30-35 days old. I water them once every 10 days to prevent them from getting sick with blackleg.

I don’t fertilize at this time, because there are still enough nutrients in the soil for normal plant development.

I water the plants with boiled or settled tap water.

Picking seedlings

When 2-3 true leaves appear, I carry out the first picking.

Before picking, I always water the boxes with plants. After absorbing the water, I carefully pick up the plants with a fork, trying not to damage the roots.

I replant into pots prepared in advance and watered with a solution of potassium permanganate (0.5 g:10 l of water) as follows: if the seedlings have not outgrown, then to the previous level, and if they have outgrown, I deepen them halfway from the cotyledon leaves.

After picking, I shade the seedlings for 2-3 days. Once a week, I water the established seedlings abundantly, and with the second watering I feed them (2 tablespoons of liquid fertilizer Ideal: Yule of water).

Tomatoes: second pick

One of our “secrets” for growing giant tomatoes is double picking.

3 weeks after the first picking, I transplant the seedlings into other pots, increasing the amount of nutrition by 3 times, giving the plants the opportunity to create a powerful root system for transplantation to a permanent place and slightly delaying the growth of green mass.

I still water it once a week.

Feeding seedlings

With the second watering I begin fertilizing. For 10 liters of water I take 1 tbsp. l. superphosphate and potassium sulfate and water at the rate of 1 glass per 1 pot. I form the bushes into 2 stems, removing all other stepsons.

Thanks to this technology, by the time of planting in open ground, plants reach a height of 1-1.2 m and form a powerful, well-developed root system and crown.

I plant it in the ground on May 20-25, covering it at night and on cold days.

Preparing the bed for De Barao

Before planting, we must specially prepare the bed (1x4 m, fence height 20 cm), planting pattern 50x50 cm, in a checkerboard pattern.

According to preliminary markings in the garden bed, I make 10 holes with a diameter of 35-40 cm and a depth of 40 cm. I pour 1 bucket of humus into each and dig it into the hole with the remaining soil, after adding 2 tbsp. l. superphosphate and 1 glass of ash.

I thoroughly mix the soil mixture in the hole, raking it to the edges so that the top of the planted root buds is not buried, but is only slightly sprinkled with earth when constructing the hole for watering the plants.

Related link: Tomatoes in a simple way: from seed to harvest - gardener's advice

Installing the supports needed for giant tomatoes

In each hole we install one pole with a diameter of 30-40 mm, a height of 4 m, deepening it into the hole by 50-60 cm. We plant tomatoes, backsprinkle and arrange holes around the poles for watering, pouring 0.5 buckets of warm water into them water.

Important

To prevent the first ovaries from falling off on planted tomatoes, 4-5 days before planting in the ground I spray them with a boron solution (1 liter of water: 1 g of boric acid).

We do the next watering after 7-10 days, depending on weather conditions.

Considering that the height of the poles for gartering tomatoes reaches 3.5 m, in order to prevent plants from falling over and reduce fluctuations under wind loads, at a height of 2 m we “tightly” tie the poles together with packing twine with a diameter of 2.5-3 mm.

Since our main task is to grow De-Barao as high as possible and reap the largest possible harvest, I continue to form them into 2 stems, removing all the side shoots.

By the way

In addition to De Barao, I like such varieties and hybrids as Cosmonaut Volkov, Heart-shaped, Marfa F1, Russian size F1 and varieties of our own selection Galina, Cascade.

Giant of Cuba

This tomato is also called the Black Giant of Cuba. Based on its external characteristics, it is difficult to classify it as a chokeberry variety. If you cut a tomato, the brown pulp will only be visible near the skin. The core of a large tomato is bright red or purple.

The Cuban giant is a mid-season tomato. The mass harvest is harvested 110 days after the appearance of the first shoots. The weight of the flattened fruits is 300 g. The largest specimens weigh 500-600 g. About 6 kg of tomatoes are harvested from one bush. The fruits are used to make sauces and pastes. They are no less good in fresh salads.

Features of cultivation

The bush requires mandatory formation

This variety is intended for growing under film or in a greenhouse. Only in the Moscow region and regions with similar climatic conditions can you try to grow a heat-loving tomato without covering. It is planted with seedlings. This indeterminate variety needs to be pinched and tied. Can be grown on a trellis or tied directly to wooden supports. Experts recommend engaging in its formation. The maximum yield is given by bushes no more than 1.8 m high, formed into 2-3 stems.

Advantages

The advantages of this Giant tomato include its resistance to diseases and keeping quality. This hybrid does not lose its presentation during transportation, which makes it possible to grow it on an industrial scale.

Tomato Ural F1

In some catalogs it may also be called Ural Super F1.

Indeterminate mid-season high-yielding hybrid.

Ural F1
Designed for greenhouses and greenhouses. Hardy and unpretentious, resistant to many diseases and stress factors.

The bush is powerful, heavily leafy. It requires tying to a support, pinching, pinching and forming a bush of 1-2 stems. Young plants need very good lighting, adults need increased doses of fertilizers. Fruit clusters bear 3-4 tomatoes. The fruits are round, smooth, glossy, bright red, weighing 300-400 g. The skin and pulp are dense.

Brutus

The Brutus tomato variety is well suited for greenhouse cultivation. The bushes are tall, 1.6 m high, and require staking and pinching. To increase the number of tomatoes, agronomists recommend growing the plant with 1-2 stems, no more. Plants have average resistance to frost and viruses. The ripening period is mid-early, taking 110-120 days from the formation of seedlings.

The fruits ripen to a red color, weigh 500-600 g, sometimes the weight reaches 1 kg. The taste is standard, sweet and sour, the flesh is juicy. The variety is ideal for fresh consumption; housewives love to make juices, sauces, and homemade adjika from tomatoes. The yield, if the correct agricultural cultivation technique is followed, is 8-9 kg of tomatoes per planting meter. Brutus has a number of advantages:

  • heavy weight of tomatoes;
  • sweet juicy pulp;
  • universal consumption;
  • good yield indicator.

Brutus requires additional care when growing: this is a preventive treatment against diseases, since cases of infection with late blight and tobacco mosaic are common. The variety responds well to fertilizing with organic matter and mineral fertilizers.

Attention! The soil for tomato seedlings must be porous and fertile. To form the soil, peat and humus are used.

Tomato Krasnobay F1

  • resistance to weather stress factors;
  • stable, uniform productivity;
  • ripening from July to autumn;
  • excellent product and taste indicators;
  • good germination;
  • heat resistance;
  • various methods of consumption and preparation.

Minuses:

  • the importance of maintaining distances when planting (indeterminate variety);
  • the need for formation and stepsoning;
  • impossibility of whole-fruit canning.

Possible pests of the variety

Spider mite. The insect is difficult to notice in plantings; its presence can be revealed by a thin web. Ticks feed on plant sap. Affected leaves dry out and fall off. An infusion containing garlic, dandelion leaves and liquid soap is used as a folk remedy. Plantings can also be treated with Karbofos.

Wireworm. The larva of the click beetle or wireworm greatly harms various crops. The wireworm damages the root system of tomatoes and can penetrate the fruits. A few days before planting tomatoes, the drug “Bazudin” is applied to the soil; its effect lasts up to 6 weeks.

Cutworm caterpillars. Gray caterpillars feed on leaves and fruits of plants. Pheromone traps are used against butterflies. The drug “Fitoverm” helps well against caterpillars.

Whitefly . The white insect looks like a fly or moth. Hides on the underside of leaves. The whitefly secretes a sugary substance, on which a sooty fungus soon forms. Gradually, the leaves change color, become deformed and fall off. “Kinmiks”, “Aktellik”, “Aktaru” are used against this insect.

Important! Chemicals are absorbed into all parts of the plants, so spraying tomatoes is possible no later than a month before harvesting the fruits.
