Features of ultra-early tomatoes
This group includes hybrid forms and varieties with fruit ripening periods of 80-95 days. There are unique ones whose tomatoes are ready for harvest in 77-79 days.
Peculiarities:
- ultra-early ripening plants are usually low plants, standard type, height does not exceed 50 cm;
- in the group of early tomatoes there are many medium-sized representatives, with a stem height of about 80-90 cm;
- tomato harvest rates for varieties of this group are lower than for tall mid-season and late varieties;
- The fruit taste of most early tomatoes is satisfactory. There is sourness, which is explained by the low sugar content in the pulp. Ripening in a short time, often in the cool first months of summer, these fruits do not have time to gain the required level of sweetness.
The “trick” of ultra-early species is different – early harvest (for summer salads), unpretentiousness, resistance to adverse weather factors. They manage to “escape” from the dangerous late blight, without causing gardeners the hassle of spraying and treating fungi.
Breeders have developed early varieties and hybrids with large fruits, although the majority of plants in this group produce tomatoes weighing 60-100 grams. Early ripening plants are suitable for open ground, for areas with harsh climatic conditions, where tall late ripening plants do not have time to ripen.

How to choose the right sowing time
Inexperienced summer residents mistakenly believe that the sooner you sow tomatoes for seedlings, the faster you will get the fruits. But in fact, it is necessary to accurately calculate the timing, taking into account a number of factors:
- ripening time of a particular variety;
- climate of the area (the onset of stable heat, warming of the soil);
- The planned place for growing the crop is in a greenhouse or on open ground ridges.
Seedlings 60 days old (on average) are suitable for planting. If the expected date for planting seedlings in a permanent place is the end of May, then count back two months and add another week for germination. It turns out that the approximate sowing time is March 20-22. When planting late (for example, in the European North), where stable warmth is established in early June, the seeds are sown in early April.

Selection principles
First you need to decide on the landing site. The selection of varieties will depend on where you plan to grow tomatoes - in a greenhouse or outdoors (in a garden bed, in a greenhouse).
Greenhouse conditions
In closed ground it is beneficial to use all the useful height and long-term heat. Here we need tall bushes with a long fruiting period, resistant to diseases. Two groups meet these conditions:
- early ripening indeterminate and semi-determinate hybrids;
- long stem cherry trees.
Sometimes compactors—super-determinate varieties—are planted along the outer edge of greenhouse beds as a border.
Open ground
How to choose early varieties of tomatoes for open ground?
In cases where the owner has the opportunity to tie up the plants well and devote time to moderate pinching, it makes sense to grow semi-determinate varieties and hybrids - they are more productive.
Determinate and super-determinate plants require minimal attention. Some standard forms do not even need a garter. Sometimes they are planted up to the first cluster for the earliest possible ripening, but they can do without shaping. The lowest-growing tomatoes produce little return from the bush, so it is more profitable to place them more densely - up to 9 pieces per square meter.
Determinants themselves limit their growth and do not need pinching of the tops in August. They literally “run away” from infections, forming crops before late blight and other pathogens become rampant. Ultra-early ripening low-growing varieties quickly free up beds for replanting (greens, radishes, green manure, etc.).
Even in northern farming zones, the earliest varieties of tomatoes successfully bear fruit. They are the main focus in harsh regions with short summers.
Culinary purpose
For the sake of an early harvest, you have to put up with the fact that early-ripening tomatoes cannot be very large and fleshy. Many of them have thin skin and watery pulp; they burst when salted (pickled) in a hot way.
For whole-fruit canning, you need to select cherry or plum-shaped tomatoes - they are denser. Hybrids are also a good option - they are usually a bit harsh in salads, but good in pickling.

Varieties of early ripening tomatoes resistant to late blight
The most common disease that affects tomatoes is late blight or late blight. This is the most dangerous disease that affects nightshade crops and is often called tomato plague or cancer.
It usually appears due to a lack of sunlight and excess humidity. During cold and rainy summers, the risk of tomato infection is very high.
The disease first affects the stem and leaves, and then spreads to the fruit. In this case, all the plants disappear and the entire harvest is lost. Many ways have been invented to combat this disease. A large number of preparations have been created for treating both the plants themselves and the seeds before planting.
But the important thing is that varieties have been bred that are not susceptible to this disease, as they have good immunity.
Alpha
The variety has good immunity to late blight disease.
- The fruit ripening period begins 80-85 days after planting the seeds.
- Standard type bush. There are a lot of fruits, all the branches are simply strewn with bunches of tomatoes, and therefore the bush needs to be tied up.
- Both the stem itself and the bunches are tied.
- The weight of one tomato does not exceed 90 grams.
- The yield is quite good - 4-5 kg of fruits per square meter. m.
The variety is recommended for growing in open ground. Tomatoes are versatile in use.
A little prince
The variety belongs to the early ripening types of tomatoes.
- Ripe tomatoes can be harvested 90 days after planting the seeds in the ground.
- The size of the fruit is not very large, rather even small - 40-45 grams each fruit. The tomatoes are round in shape.
- Tomatoes are universal in use; they can be eaten fresh or canned.
- The yield of the variety is stable, all fruits ripen almost at the same time.
They have wonderful taste.
Dwarf
Tomatoes of this variety have unique resistance to late blight and are bred specifically for growing in open ground.
The variety is considered low-growing, with early ripening fruits.
- Tomatoes are round in shape and weigh 50-65 grams each.
- The tomato bush grows small, no more than half a meter in height.
- The plant can withstand changes in air temperature well.
- It is recommended to plant in open ground 2-3 weeks earlier than other tomato varieties.
- There is no need to cover the seedlings; even with significant cold weather, the plant will not freeze.
Fruit ripening occurs approximately 90-00 days after sowing the seeds in the ground. The yield is about 3 kilograms of tomatoes per bush.
Otradny
The variety is perfect for planting in open ground.
- Ripening begins three months after planting.
- Tomatoes are not afraid of late blight and blossom end rot.
- The variety has unique qualities - it does not require careful care.
- The bushes do not need staking or pinching.
- Tomatoes do not grow very large – 40-50 grams. Their shape is an elongated oval.
The color of ripe tomatoes is dark red. The fruits have versatility in use.
Varieties of early tomatoes
This large group of varieties includes tomatoes, the ripening time of which varies between 90-100 days. Harvesting time depends on the growing conditions of tomatoes, climate, and correct agricultural technology. Breeders distinguish the following subgroups:
- by ripening period (ultra-early tomatoes, early, mid-early);
- by bush height (indeterminate and determinate varieties);
- by shape, weight and color of fruits;
- on the use of tomatoes.
Among the early ones are low-growing tomatoes grown in beds (although they are the majority), greenhouse indets, cherry tomatoes and varieties with large fruits. Thanks to modern selection, new hybrids have been developed that are resistant to cold weather, diseases and pests, and with fruits of excellent taste.
Features of early ripening varieties:
- stable yield;
- unpretentiousness;
- easy care;
- “elimination” from the most dangerous tomato diseases.
Of course, mid-season and late-ripening tomatoes are considered more productive, and for some, more tasty. But by choosing the right variety of early tomato and providing it with care, even inexperienced gardeners can get results even in the difficult and harsh climate of most Russian regions.
Tomatoes are the sweetest
There are many options for sweet tomato varieties.
Honey fireworks
This variety has a sweet taste and bright appearance. The fruits are used to make juice, salad and dessert. When grown in a greenhouse, the plant grows to a height of 180 cm. Harvesting occurs after 120 days. From 1 m2 you can get 7 kg of ripe tomatoes. Their weight is 300-450 g, they are round and flattened on top. The color is yellow with red stripes and spots. The peculiarity of the variety is that the harvested crop is prone to long-term storage.
Pink honey
A sweet variety whose bush will grow up to 70 cm. The vegetables have thin skins, which is why they cannot withstand transportation. One fruit weighs 1.5 kg. The variety can grow on any land, but it has one drawback - susceptibility to diseases.
Gold
A mid-season variety that is unpretentious. From this bush you can harvest 2.5 kg of tomatoes. They have a pleasant taste and aroma. The bush is low, formed into 2 stems, so pinching is not required. The tomato weighs 40 g.
How to choose suitable tomato varieties for seedlings
The time for sowing tomatoes for seedlings is approaching inexorably, so it’s time to choose varieties and buy seeds. And this seemingly simple task becomes more and more difficult every year. Sellers, in the struggle for buyers, are expanding and expanding the range, and in order to navigate it, you already need a guide. I myself was often lost when choosing, I bought a lot of unnecessary things and sometimes not what I needed - in a word, I made a lot of mistakes before developing a clear algorithm, which allows you to select only suitable varieties. I’ll share it - maybe it will be useful to someone too.
Selecting zoned varieties
This is the first and mandatory condition. Breeders, working on the creation of new varieties and hybrids, achieve their maximum adaptability to local climatic conditions, which, as we understand, are very different in the South and the North. So tomatoes of southern varieties differ from northern ones no less. Plants of southern varieties most often have powerful foliage, which is positioned in such a way as to shelter the fruits from the hot sun. Plants develop more slowly, they do not undergo all life processes as intensively as northern ones, but this gives them higher resistance to external conditions. Northern varieties , in turn, are focused on short summers: they develop faster, form a harvest faster, but when trying to grow them in the South, they do not please with the abundance of fruits and long life. The fact is that such plants have a relatively smaller foliage area than the southern ones, and it is located in such a way as to provide maximum illumination of the ripening fruits. Under the sun of the South, these tomatoes age early and are unable to provide nutrition to the growing crop. By the way, manufacturers do not always inform consumers about which regions a particular variety is intended for. So, my friend, who always does well with tomatoes, as they say, “didn’t work” with the varieties ‘Novichok’ and ‘Dar Zavolzhya’. We thought for a long time what the problem was. And then I found information that these varieties are intended for the Volga region and southern regions. That is, theoretically they can grow in the central part of Russia, but it is not a fact that it will be successful. For reference, I will list some of the zoned varieties and hybrids:
- for central and northern regions - Alaska, Alpatieva 905a, White filling, Betta, Far North, F1 Red Arrow, Metelitsa, Moskvich, Snowdrop, Polar precocious, Polar Explorer, Wind Rose, Siberian precocious, Bullfinch, Snow Fairy Tale, Taimyr, Yamal and others ;
- for the Central Black Earth Region - F1 Blues, F1 Grain, Lyana, F1 Mars, Maryushka, F1 Olya, Peremoga, Solnechny and others;
- for the Volga region and southern regions - Agata, Veneta, Quiz, Volgogradets, Dar Zavolzhye, Ermak, Zoren, Novichok, Titan, Fakel and others.
Deciding where we will plant
In central Russia, few people take the risk of growing tomatoes in open ground, and in the South they require greenhouse conditions much less often, but in any climatic conditions, a good greenhouse significantly expands the gardener’s capabilities. So when it’s there, it’s great. For me, building a greenhouse is still only in my dreams and plans, so all varieties of indeterminate (unlimitedly growing) tomatoes are no longer needed - in open ground they will produce a harvest only in the warm climate of the southern regions (I talked in detail about the classification of tomatoes by growth type in the article Tomatoes: selecting varieties and grow seedlings). In fact, serious seed producers usually indicate on the packaging whether a given variety is intended for cultivation in open ground or is suitable only for greenhouses (there are also universal options - they can be planted both there and there). If there is no such information, we focus on the specified type of growth:
- superdeterminant - for early harvest in greenhouses and planting in open ground;
- indeterminate - for greenhouses (in the southern regions planting in open ground is possible);
- determinant - suitable for both cultivation in open ground and greenhouses (depending on the length of the growing season and the method of formation).
A separate story is the choice of varieties for a balcony or loggia (those who do not have a summer cottage often successfully grow tomatoes at home). for container plantings ; the ideal option is if they are adapted for such growing conditions (for example, like the Balcony Miracle variety).
Selecting the ripening period
Next, we determine how long the growing season will suit us. To do this, you need to answer two questions:
- when do we want to get the harvest?
- what are our climatic conditions?
It is clear that the earlier tomatoes we want to see on our table, the more early-ripening varieties we choose (the article The earliest varieties of tomatoes will suggest options). If you are willing to wait, we will prefer varieties with a longer growing season. Within reasonable limits, of course.
When talking about how to calculate the time for sowing vegetables for seedlings, I gave a table of the number of frost-free days - these numbers should always be kept in mind when choosing varieties of any plants according to their ripening period. So, based on my conditions, I usually choose early and ultra-early varieties - only they have a high chance of producing a good harvest in open ground in our climate. By the way, precocity has a “side effect” that you should also be aware of. Such varieties usually give off their harvest in unison - their fruiting period is shorter than that of varieties with a longer growing season. The fruits themselves rarely reach large sizes, and the yield per bush will be relatively low. This is a “payment” for the accelerated development of the plant.
Deciding whether there is time for care
Tomatoes are a fairly demanding crop to care for. Among other things, they need to be pinched (remove excess side shoots - stepchildren), tall ones - tied up and shaped . This requires time, which is not always available. And without proper care, varieties that require the formation of a bush will produce a meager harvest and will be more susceptible to disease than others.
If you have the opportunity to pay attention to your tomatoes, you don’t have to limit the choice of varieties based on this parameter. But if there is a catastrophic lack of time, we choose from those varieties that do not require pinching and - due to their small growth - do not need tying up shoots.
Select according to harvest purpose
When growing tomatoes, we pursue some specific goal, don’t we? Some people want fresh tomatoes for summer salads, others are thinking about preparing them for the winter, others want the harvest to stay fresh longer. Based on this, we select varieties. Tomatoes are divided into :
- salad or dessert (a classic example is the 'Bull's Heart' variety); These are, as a rule, large-fruited varieties, fleshy, juicy, very tasty and aromatic;
- for canning (for example, 'Lady fingers', 'Pink icicle'); the fruits of these varieties are usually medium-sized, their flesh is dense, and their skin is strong; Often such tomatoes have an oval shape, convenient for packaging in jars;
- for storage (for example, varieties 'Rococo', 'Giraffe'); These are often late-ripening varieties with a long fruiting period and relatively small, dense fruits.
- universal (for example, Moskvich variety); These tomatoes are suitable for both canning and eating fresh.
Preventing problems
When choosing from varieties that are similar in parameters, it is better to give preference to those that are characterized by increased resistance to the most common diseases. So, in our region, a big problem when growing tomatoes (even in protected soil) is late blight, and it “eats” the plants literally overnight, and often completely unexpectedly: even today the bushes were green, and the next day they are already covered with brown spots. Therefore, varieties with increased resistance to late blight (for example, 'Dubok' or 'Explosion') are very relevant for us.
Considering other parameters
For those who are very scrupulous in choosing a variety, I will give a few more possible criteria. From my point of view, their importance is still secondary, but for someone, probably, any of them could be decisive. So…
Choose by shape and color
If you want to create a beautiful vegetable garden or just love experiments, you will probably want to choose tomatoes of different colors and all kinds of shapes - at the time of their fruiting they make a bright impression))
The most common fruit shapes are:
- rounded (for example, 'Moskvich', 'Yablonka Rossii');
- oval, or plum-shaped (for example, 'Large cream', 'Pink icicle');
- flat-round (for example, 'Yamal 200', 'King of the Early').
There are tomatoes with pear-shaped ('Raspberry Lamp', 'Black Pear', 'Bedouin') and heart-shaped ('Bull's Heart') fruits. The range of fruit sizes is wide: from huge (up to 1.5 kg) fruits of the 'Giant-10 Novikova' variety to tiny (about 20 g) "berries" of the 'Balcony Miracle'. The largest selection, of course, is in color. This may well become the topic of a separate review, but for now I’ll just list some varieties of tomatoes with fruits of different colors :
- yellow (Golden De Barao, Lemon Giant, Scythian Gold, Goldfish, Golden Drop, Moon, Salute, Wonder of the World);
- orange (Giraffe, F1 Kish-mish, Orange cream, Persimmon);
- black (De Barao black, Bedouin, F1 Viagra, Black Pear, Black Moor, Black Prince);
- green (Malachite Box, Emerald Apple);
- white (Snow White);
- tabby (brindle, pepper tabby)

Features of growing tomatoes in central Russia
The climatic features of the area do not allow the cultivation of unsuitable types of crops. Therefore, you need to be more careful when choosing. The peculiarities of growing tomatoes in the middle zone, including the Volga region, lie in the correct selection of variety, location and care. It is difficult to grow tomatoes in unprotected soil. Since they are heat-loving and need quality care. Breeders develop varieties that are adapted to external conditions.
Summer residents advise installing shelters. When forming a frame over the beds, tighten it with special material. Seedlings are planted in such beds 15 days earlier than in open ground.
It is grown using the seedling method. It is advisable to choose varieties whose ripening period falls on the 120th day. If the grower decides to grow later varieties, they must be immune to disease.
Yellow tomatoes
If you are interested in yellow tomatoes, you can check out the following options.
Yellow giant
This is a mid-season tomato, as harvesting occurs on days 110-122. The height of the bush is 1.2-1.8 m, the variety is indeterminate. The vegetables are bright yellow and have a round shape. The plant is suitable for growing indoors. Needs pinching and gartering. Vegetables have a sweet taste and aroma. There is resistance to cracking.
Altai orange
This is a tall plant whose fruit harvest occurs on day 110-115. In the middle zone, grow Altai orange in a greenhouse. Since the plant is tall, it needs to be tied up and pinched. The vegetables are large, flat-round in shape, they have tender and fleshy pulp.
Barrel of honey
This is a mid-season indeterminate variety with yellow tomatoes. When growing, Barrel of Honey requires pinching and gartering. Tomatoes weigh 400 g, they have a flat-round shape, the taste is sweet and aromatic.
