Potatoes: testing new valuable varieties

author Lukshin A.V., photo by the author
Potatoes are widely used in different countries as an integral part of many dishes, so great attention is paid to potato selection. There are already a huge number of potato varieties in the world that have great nutritional and medicinal value. Every year, breeders create and offer gardeners new products with interesting qualities that are unlike previous varieties.

Potatoes are not only the main crop in my garden, but also my hobby. It’s so interesting to grow them and see how ancient potato varieties, created more than a hundred years ago, and completely new ones that have just emerged from the breeding beds develop and yield. I love watching them and comparing their qualities. This is especially convenient to do when the grooves are located next to an old famous potato variety and a new, recently created variety. For example, the American potato variety Russet Burbank is over a hundred years old. It grows in my garden next to the Russian novelty “Jubilee Zhukov”. Thus, finding themselves in exactly the same conditions, old and new potato varieties seem to compete with each other - who is better. I dig up bushes of ripened potatoes with great interest and impatience: what kind of “treasure” is hidden under the bush, how will each variety thank you for the care and careful care of it from early spring to autumn?

It happens that an old, proven potato variety outperforms a new one and produces a rich harvest of large, beautiful tubers. But often newcomers are not inferior to their predecessors and captivate with their lush growth, beautiful bush, good yield, and excellent taste of tubers. And, the most important thing that is valued in modern potato varieties is that they are characterized by high resistance to diseases and pests. Therefore, new varieties are displacing old potato varieties and moving forward, occupying large areas in the fields, and are also used by amateur potato growers for planting in vegetable gardens.

Over the many years that I have been involved in potatoes, I have grown and tested a large number of varieties in my conditions. Observing numerous varieties, I annually select the best ones, which stand out primarily for their good yield and disease resistance. When digging, I evaluate the appearance of the tubers, and, of course, their good taste and reliable storage.

During the current gardening season (2016), my plot has more than 150 varieties of potatoes, including medicinal varieties of potatoes with colored pulp. This year, many potato varieties created by Russian and foreign breeders showed their best performance at the new site.

During the observation and testing of new potato products over the past two years, several foreign varieties stood out, which simply exceeded all my expectations! I want to tell the readers of the Gardenia.ru website about them in this article.

Advantages of Elmundo potato variety

When I first learned that there is such a variety of Elmundo potatoes, and it has, as it was stated in its characteristics, “a truly royal taste,” this became a powerful argument for me to try it. Of course, with such a phrase “the soul caught fire,” as they say, I wanted to purchase this variety and grow it on my own plot.

The search was crowned with success, and in the spring of 2014 the treasured nodules of the Elmundo potato variety arrived to me by mail in a small parcel. In addition to this variety, other potato novelties came to me that year. So, in my test there were five interesting new potato products at the same time - I was interested in simply incredible statements about their taste and yield.

Spring has arrived and new seed tubers have been planted during the prime planting season. I grew all potato varieties according to the same scheme. Planting in early May in furrows; Before planting, I treat the potato tubers with a disinfectant, and add complex fertilizer to the holes when planting. Then the usual agricultural techniques for potatoes are carried out - harrowing, weeding, hilling. As you can see, there are no frills or tricks in growing potatoes.

Potato variety "Elmundo"

I was interested in it from the very beginning because of its description: “A table potato variety with exceptional taste. Suitable for growing in all types of soil. Suitable for cultivation using organic fertilizer. It is highly resistant to late blight and common scab. Produces a large number of tubers and has a high yield.” Judging by this description, this is not a variety, but the dream of any potato gardener. In addition, the Elmundo variety of potatoes is resistant to late blight, which in recent years has been increasingly developing in many areas and destroying a significant part of the crop. It is also important that “Elmundo” is an early ripening variety, and the first digging can be done already on the 45th day. But I count down the days from the appearance of full potato shoots (not, as many people believe, counting from the moment the tuber is planted).

The Elmundo variety of potatoes has an oval or oval elongated tuber, with a yellow skin and light yellow flesh. The average tuber weight is 110-140 g. The starch content is about 11-13.5 percent, which is quite a lot for early varieties. It is distinguished by high marketability and keeping quality, very high taste qualities. Marked by high resistance to the causative agent of potato cancer, to the nematode. Resistant to late blight on tops and tubers. According to the originator, the variety is moderately resistant to leaf curl virus, wrinkled and striped mosaic.

Advantages of potatoes of the varieties “Bafana”, “Colombo”, “Bettina”, “Panther”

I tested the potato varieties “Bafana”, “Colombo”, “Bettina” and “Panther” at the same time as the “Elmundo” variety - in the same area, with the same planting and care. I will give a brief description of these varieties.

Potato variety "Bafana"

– medium late, suitable for growing on all types of soil.
It sprouts quickly. The tubers quickly gain mass and form a strong skin. The tuber is elongated-oval with small eyes. The peel is yellow, the flesh is white. Tuber weight 100-150 g, starch content 14-16 percent. It has high yield, good taste and high shelf life. According to the originator, the Bafana variety is resistant to the pathogen of potato cancer and to the golden potato nematode. Moderately susceptible to late blight pathogen on tops and tubers. – very early, the first digging can be done on the 45th day after full germination. According to the originator, this potato variety is ultra-early ripening. Very quickly forms not only a bright, but also damage-resistant peel; washable. The tubers are oval-round in shape with small eyes. The peel and pulp are yellow. Tuber weight up to 130 g, starch 11-15 percent. It has excellent taste and high shelf life. Resistant to cancer and nematode. Moderately resistant to late blight.

Potato variety "Bettina"

– mid-early, from planting to the beginning of the formation of a commercial harvest 70-80 days. The tuber is oval with small eyes. The peel is yellow, the flesh is light yellow. The average weight of the tuber is 90-140 g, the starch content is 13-16 percent. The variety has high yield, good taste and high shelf life. According to the originator, it is resistant to the pathogen of potato cancer and nematode. Moderately resistant to leaf curl virus and wrinkled mosaic.

Potato variety "Panther"

- according to the originator, one of the best varieties of European selection, which allows you to obtain very early products, which is especially important for the southern regions. In addition, it is suitable for long-term storage. Productivity is up to 60 t/ha. The tuber is oval with small eyes. The peel is yellow, the flesh is light yellow. The weight of the commercial tuber is 90-120 g, the starch content is 11-15 percent. The variety has good taste, high shelf life and marketability. Results of testing new potato varieties

For two years I observed and tested the above potato varieties on my site. I want to say that all these varieties were distinguished by good friendly shoots and powerful green tops. Their bushes looked vigorous and remained green until late autumn. This means that these varieties are resistant to viruses and diseases, which is important, with minimal care.

As autumn approaches, you look forward to digging potatoes, so you want to see what kind of harvest each bush has brought. All new potato varieties showed high yields. On average, under each bush there were from 18 to 25 large, elongated or rounded tubers. And again, I note that this is with minimal care and the absence of organic fertilizers (I only applied mineral complex fertilizer when planting seed tubers in the holes).

After digging up the potato crop, you next need to evaluate the taste of the tubers of each variety and their ability to be stored in winter. I store all varieties of potatoes the same way - I put the tubers in wooden boxes, put them in a regular village cellar with little ventilation. During the winter storage of tubers of new potato varieties from the 2014-2015 harvest, I did not notice any losses in these varieties. At the same time, other potato varieties under the same conditions had losses during storage, mainly due to their damage by late blight.

And now about the most important thing - the taste of the tubers of new potato varieties. The photo of sections of tubers of different varieties shows their shape and color of the pulp.

In the photo: potatoes of the varieties “Bafana”, “Colombo”, “Bettina”

I boiled the potatoes in water directly in their skins—as they say, in their “jackets.” As the proverb says, “there are no comrades according to taste.” But here, probably, the case is different: the boiled, crumbly and tasty potatoes of these varieties will appeal to many people.

Potato variety "Elmundo"

really tastes great and it lived up to all its claims. The warm cooked tubers of this variety had a good consistency, and they tasted as if butter had already been added - this really surprised me! The pulp of Elmundo potato tubers is starchy and crumbly. Over many years of testing different varieties of potatoes, I have never had tubers with such a taste. So, Elmundo potatoes can rightfully be called “a variety with a royal taste.”

Potato variety "Bettina"

When cooked, it does not crumble and retains its integrity, with dense pulp and good taste.

Bafana potato variety

– probably the most crumbly of these varieties with high taste qualities.

Potato varieties "Colombo" and "Panther"

It also turned out to be tasty; when boiled, their tubers were medium-cooked and had a slightly dense consistency.

All new potato varieties were created to meet modern requirements: high yield and good taste, disease resistance, beautiful tuber shape with small eyes, resistance to mechanical damage during harvesting, high shelf life during storage. Based on the results of personal observations of these potato varieties, I can say with complete confidence that their originators managed to create good varieties that meet all the requirements and are suitable for cultivation both on an industrial scale and on a private plot.

Landing

Tubers are planted in April, after the end of frost, when the soil temperature reaches +10-15. In the fall, dig up the bed and fertilize it with compost or humus (5-10 kg per 1 sq. m, depending on the nutritional value of the soil). Add additional sand and peat to heavy soil. In the spring, they dig up again and apply potassium-phosphorus fertilizers.

Potatoes should not be placed in areas after or next to tomatoes.

Tubers are germinated in a bright place at a temperature of +12-15. Before planting, they are treated with Epin and planted to a depth of 10 cm. Scheme - 30 by 70 cm.

What type of potato is the best?

My experience will be useful to those gardeners whose soil is difficult to grow potatoes. Having tested various varieties on loamy soil, I selected the most delicious, healthy and productive ones. I would like to dwell on the top five of the 150 varieties tested in 2014 and 2015.

Potatoes are my love, my passion. It is interesting for me to observe varieties created more than a hundred years ago and completely new ones, foreign and domestic.

The soil will show

An old variety from America, Russet Burbank, which is more than a hundred years old, grows next to the Russian novelty Jubilee Zhukov. They seem to be competing with each other to see whose potatoes are better. It happens that an old variety outperforms a new one and produces a rich harvest of large, beautiful tubers. But the newcomers are not inferior to their predecessors.

At the same time, my many years of experience have shown that domestically selected varieties are still inferior to foreign ones. Over the past two years, several foreign varieties have exceeded all my expectations. I want to tell you a little about them. Again, we take into account the characteristics of the soil on my site, but the soil is problematic for most gardeners in the country.

New items that didn't disappoint

Having read about the El Mundo variety that it has a truly royal taste, of course, I was inspired to buy it. The treasured nodules arrived by mail in the spring of 2014. I also purchased new items with excellent characteristics. I grew all my 150 varieties according to the same scheme.

Article on the topic: Potato variety “Hermes” - description and photo

The El Mundo variety, according to descriptions, is a gardener's dream. It is valuable because it is suitable for all types of soil. And its high resistance to late blight and scab only adds points to it. I carried out the first digging of El Mundo on the 45th day from the date of full shoots. The tubers turned out to be oval, with yellow skin and light yellow flesh. Average weight is 110-140 g. And El Mundo did not disappoint with its taste.

Bafana is a mid-late variety, also suitable for growing in all types of soil. The tubers quickly gain mass and form a strong skin. Tuber with small eyes. The peel is yellow, the flesh is white. Weight 100-150 g.

Colomba is ultra-early ripening; the first digging can be done on the 45th day after germination. Tubers with small eyes. The peel and flesh are yellow. Tuber weight up to 130 g.

Bettina is a mid-early variety, an oval tuber with small eyes. The peel is yellow, the flesh is light yellow. The average weight of the tuber is 90-140 g.

Panther is a productive, oval tuber with small eyes. The peel is yellow, the flesh is light yellow. Weight 90-120 g.

When digging under each bush of the named varieties, there were on average from 18 to 25 tubers.

Health and storage

I have not noticed any diseases on these varieties in two years. According to the author-breeders, they are resistant to the pathogen of potato cancer and nematodes, and are moderately resistant to late blight.

I store all my potatoes in a village cellar with little ventilation, in wooden boxes. In the winter of 2014-2015, I did not notice any losses on these varieties. At the same time, tubers affected by late blight were rejected from other varieties.

Taste Report

The most important thing is the taste. And here potatoes can compete with the proverb “There are no comrades for taste and color.” Rich, crumbly, it will appeal to most people.

El Mundo potatoes were boiled in their jackets. I was very surprised: it was as if butter had been added to it. The pulp is starchy and crumbly. In ten years of testing different varieties of potatoes with such a taste, I have never had such a taste. It is not for nothing that it is called the variety with a royal taste.

The Bettina variety does not crumble when cooked and has a whole appearance, with dense pulp and good taste.

Bafana is probably the most crumbly of these varieties and very tasty.

Colomba and Panther were medium-cooked during cooking and also had a tasty, slightly dense consistency. The starch content in these varieties is from 11 to 16%.

By the way, caring for potatoes is normal. Just before planting, I treat the tubers with a disinfectant. When planting, I add complex fertilizer to the holes.

Potatoes on the scales

  • Over ten years of experiments, more than 400 varieties of potatoes passed through my plot. I tested Dutch, American, and domestic varieties. The advantages of foreign selection are that it offers a huge number of new varieties with excellent qualities. In Russia, unfortunately, there are few institutions left that create good varieties.
  • Nevertheless, I have been growing the Magician variety for five years now, and I am very pleased. The bush is powerful, the tubers are large, the tops remain green until late autumn and supply the tubers with nutrients. I collect almost a bucket of potatoes from two Sorcerer bushes. I would like to highlight the mid-season varieties Yubilei Zhukova, Velikan, Golubizna, and the early variety Zhukovsky.
  • The sensational variety Tuleevsky on my site showed scanty yield - only 3-4 tubers per bush, while the nearby growing Sorcerer had 20-25 tubers. Gardeners also talked a lot about the Restored Lorch variety. I liked the taste, but it keeps very poorly. Perhaps because of the soil.
  • At the same time, among the disadvantages of many imported varieties, I would like to note slyness - in the third year they produce almost no harvest.

general description

The characteristics and description of the Manifest variety make it possible to grow potatoes in the North-West, Volga-Vyatka and Central regions. There it fully reveals its advantages and shows high productivity.

What does a bush look like?

Potato Manifest forms a bush of an intermediate type, depending on the region and care - medium or tall, but usually not exceeding half a meter. The leaves are grassy green, wrinkled, with curving edges.

The flowers are not too large and abundant. As can be seen in the photo, the color inside the corolla is distinctly anthocyanin, and towards the end of the petals it brightens and becomes almost white.

Characteristics of tubers

This is a table variety, culinary type C. Potatoes can be used to prepare all dishes; the tubers cook medium-bodied, and when cooked they become soft, but do not crumble. Universal, suitable for any dish.

Description of potato tubers of the Manifest variety:

Tuber shapeoval
Peelred
Pulplight yellow, does not darken when cooked
Eyessuperficial
Starch content11-15%
Tuber weight90-150 g
Tastegood

COMMENT! With intensive feeding, Manifest tubers can grow larger. But you shouldn’t strive for this; potatoes then lose in taste and more often suffer from pests and diseases.

Productivity, storage

The ripening period for potatoes of the Manifesto variety is mid-early. From germination to digging it takes 90-110 days. Cleaning can be done in two periods:

  • young potatoes for fresh consumption;
  • fully ripened tubers for storage.

Commercial yield depends on the region, agricultural technology, structure and composition of the soil, ranging from 165 to 408 c per hectare. The maximum was recorded on well-structured sandy soils filled with organic matter - 737 centners per hectare.

The transportability of Manifesto potato tubers is good, the storage duration in suitable premises is up to six months. Keeping quality is 94-95%.
