Red bananas: how to eat them, features, taste, use in cooking

Taste and smell of red bananas

Gourmets who have tried the exotic fruit note the sweet taste of red bananas with rich creamy notes. The taste of the pulp is somewhat astringent, the aroma of the fruit resembles a combination of raspberries and strawberries.

The healthiest way to eat red bananas is fresh, unprocessed. In this case, the body will absorb the maximum amount of useful elements included in the treat. However, if you really want to taste something exotic, these fruits can be dried or grilled.

Chemical composition

The benefits of bananas for the human body are due to their rich chemical composition.

Moreover, the amount of useful components may vary depending on the ripeness and type of fruit.

The composition includes a large amount of proteins and carbohydrates, but quite little fat - from 0.02 to 1.4 grams per fruit.

The main beneficial substances are:

  • fiber and calcium;
  • phosphorus and iron;
  • beta-carotene;
  • potassium;
  • B vitamins;
  • vitamin C;
  • fructose and sucrose;
  • esters;
  • starch; magnesium;
  • retinol and selenium;
  • amino acids.

Calcium is the main source for the normal formation of skeletal bones. The trace element regulates muscle contraction, participating in the synthesis of special hormones in the body.

Together with iron and phosphorus, it improves the condition of hair and skin, normalizes hemoglobin levels, preventing anemia.

The vitamins B 1 and B 2 included in the composition allow the heart to function normally. When they enter the body, they participate in the synthesis of red blood cells. For children, these vitamins are especially useful, as they form the epithelium, hair and nails.

Calorie content

Calorie and energy value depends on the degree of ripeness.

  • green fruits are lower in calories, they contain about 88 calories per 100 grams of product,
  • and overripe fruit contains 150 calories.

That is why bananas are not allowed during various diets, since they cannot be called low-calorie.

Description and places of growth

There really are red bananas and they grow in Australia and North America. However, Costa Rica is considered their largest importer. These bananas are almost no different from their “relatives”. The only difference is the unusual color: from orange to bright red. The shape of the fruit is the same as that of yellow bananas, but the size is three times smaller. Their flesh is very soft and sweet, and the peel is dense and thick.

Among red bananas, the Cavendish variety is considered quite popular. These bananas are very large and become brightly colored when ripe. The most delicious among them are those fruits that were grown in the Seychelles.

Ripe bananas, freshly picked from the tree, bring special pleasure. But transporting these fruits is quite difficult, since their structure is very delicate. Therefore, it is almost impossible to find them on store shelves in most countries.

Description of the variety

Red bananas can be confidently called an exquisite delicacy: the softest yellow-scarlet flesh has a pleasant fruity smell, reminiscent of raspberries and a delicate texture.

A brief description of the variety is as follows:

  • the fruit is about a third smaller than its yellow relative;
  • thick peel, which in some cases has to be removed with a knife;
  • The peel of a ripe fruit is painted in rich colors and can be purple or even burgundy. A sign of fruit ripening is the absence of green stripes and spots.

Important! There is a tomato called "Red Banana". Outwardly, it is very similar to the fruit of the same name, but they taste completely different.

The highest yield of these fruits is recorded in Costa Rica - the local population enjoys eating red bananas, adding variety to their daily menu. However, in other countries it is almost impossible to find such a fruit on store shelves. And the point is not the rarity of the plant itself: with a strong desire and a suitable climate, it is not so difficult to grow a special type of grass on which bright fruits ripen.

Difficulties will have to be encountered a little later - during transportation. Ripe bananas are easily deformed, and it is almost impossible to transport the ripe product over long distances.

However, a solution was found: it turns out that if you pick unripe fruits, you don’t have to worry about them being damaged during transportation. But here you will have to face another problem - green fruits are practically inedible, and in order to eat them you will have to wait until they ripen. There is a proven way to ripen bananas of an unusual color at home. Place the purchased fruits in a container with warm water for a couple of hours, and then transfer them to a dry place for several days.

Origin of the word banana

There is no exact information about the origin of the Latin definition Musa. Some researchers believe that the banana was named in memory of the court physician Antonio Musa, who served in the service of Octavian Augustus, the Roman emperor who ruled in the last decades BC. e and the first years of our era. According to another theory, it comes from the Arabic word “موز‎”, which sounds like “muz” - the name of the edible fruits produced on this plant. The concept of “banana” passed into the Russian language as a free transliteration of the word “banana” from the dictionaries of almost all European languages. Apparently, this definition was borrowed by Spanish or Portuguese sailors at the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th centuries from the vocabulary of tribes living in West Africa.

How to eat unusual bananas

Before or after purchasing, you must ensure the ripeness of the fruit. A ready-to-eat banana has a soft dark red peel and darkened flesh with a scarlet tint. Green or light yellow stripes indicate immaturity. The skin may even be slightly brown, but stains and damage on it are undesirable. As with regular bananas, defects hide inedible areas of flesh.

Advice. For the fruit to ripen, leave it in a dark place at room temperature for 1-1.5 weeks. To speed up ripening, you can use this method: place unripe specimens in an empty pan with 2-3 apples.

The red variety is not eaten raw, like the yellow variety. It tastes better, but only if the fruits have ripened on the branches in a natural atmosphere. Those exotics that are brought to Europe are not able to fully reveal their taste delights. Don’t be disappointed: red bananas are excellent in all kinds of desserts, main courses and snacks. During the cooking process, the pulp is sometimes subjected to heat treatment.

The harm of red bananas

Despite all the positive qualities, red bananas also have negative indicators:

• high potassium content is not the best option for those with diseased kidneys;

• bananas enhance fluid removal and thicken the blood, which is dangerous for people with varicose veins and for men who have problems with erection;

• if you have irritable bowel syndrome, red bananas are not the best option due to the increased risk of bloating;

• you should not consume bananas a lot for obese people;

• should not be taken by diabetics, as various methods are used to ripen bananas faster, which turns complex carbohydrates into a component with a high glycemic index.

How are they different from yellow ones?

The main difference from yellow bananas is their appearance. The taste of the fruits is also slightly different. But besides this, red bananas have more tender flesh, which quickly ripens and turns into a mushy substance. Due to the fact that the pulp quickly becomes soft, this variety of fruit is poorly suited for transportation and long-term storage.

In addition, the difference from yellow bananas lies in the chemical composition of the fruit. Reds contain more nutrients and have a more pronounced effect on the body.

How to cook them?

There are a great many cooking options. The simplest one was invented in Costa Rica: locals make them into sandwiches on white bread. And Indonesians know well how to prepare red bananas as a side dish: they simply fry them in oil and serve them with seafood.

The raspberry note in the aroma of red bananas will make it a welcome guest in any fruit dessert, be it a salad, ice cream or a low-calorie cake.

A banana smoothie will be an excellent substitute for chocolate bars or sandwiches for a snack. You need to cut a red banana and one kiwi into a blender bowl, add a spoonful of liquid honey, add milk and beat.

On a hot summer day, you can treat yourself and make a banana split. For this:

  1. A ripe banana is cut in half lengthwise and placed on an elongated dish.
  2. Between the two halves you need to put three scoops of ice cream: strawberry, vanilla and chocolate.
  3. Each ball is decorated with a cap of whipped heavy cream.
  4. Topping syrup (strawberry, chocolate) is poured over the whole thing.
  5. Sprinkle with chopped nuts.
  6. Cocktail cherries are placed on top of the cream.

Composition and benefits of the product

Unusual fruits contain a large number of useful substances that are beneficial for the body of any person:

  • cellulose;
  • vitamins of group A;
  • ascorbic acid;
  • iron;
  • potassium.

Important! A substance called beta-carotene was found in large quantities in this variety. This fact allows us to answer the question of why bananas are red.

It is the composition that determines the benefits of the indicated fruits. Fruits have the following effects:

  1. Provide the body with the necessary amount of fluid, maintaining water balance.
  2. Strengthens the structure of hair and nail plates.
  3. They have a general tonic effect.

The low calorie content of the product allows it to be consumed by people on a diet. At the same time, bananas promote rapid satiety, helping to lose excess weight in record time.

However, even such healthy foods can be harmful. It is recommended that patients with diabetes mellitus avoid eating exotic bananas. This fact is due to the high content of natural sugars, which can provoke a sharp deterioration in well-being. But if the diagnosed disease is type 2, you can occasionally allow yourself to enjoy exotic fruits in small quantities.

Methods for preparing exotic fruits

At home, they are most often fried in oil. Deep frying is well suited for this, but you can completely arm yourself with a well-heated frying pan. After peeling, cut the pulp into rings or cubes. Then simmer them in oil over low heat until cooked. Then arrange the pieces in layers in a deep plate, brushing each level with honey.

Another roasting option for the second dish:

  • cut the peeled bananas into rings (3 pieces are enough);
  • finely chop 2 onions;
  • fry it in a frying pan for 2-3 minutes;
  • Immediately add bananas to the hot surface and simmer for another 10 minutes;

Fried bananas

  • add salt, add spicy oregano to taste, as well as coriander and ground black pepper;
  • leave to simmer for another 5 minutes;
  • add chopped or crushed garlic, stir and return to the heat for 5 minutes. (until fully prepared).

This side dish is served with stewed turkey or beef. For taste, it is seasoned with quince and lingonberry sauce. You can also stew bananas. Wrap half the fruit in foil along with bacon. Or wrap a thin slice of this meat around the flesh and, piercing with a toothpick, brown on the grill.

Whole ripe bananas are simply cut into a salad along with other fruits. And unripe fruits are baked in rings in the oven, under a layer of marshmallows and brown sugar. The exotic fruit is also used as a filling for baked goods. Red bananas are unusual, but to fully enjoy their taste, you have to work hard.

What can you cook?

Among the ways to prepare red bananas, the most popular is adding the pulp to smoothies and milkshakes. The sweet, creamy pulp goes well with other fruits and milk, not only cow's milk, but also vegetable milk (coconut, almond). A delicious combination is a mix of bananas, kiwi, passion fruit. Fruit pulp can also be mixed with more accessible fruits and berries, for example, grapes and strawberries.

You can use exotic fruits to prepare hot appetizers and main courses. An unusual dish - baked bananas in bacon. Thin strips of bacon are wrapped around pieces of fruit and baked in the oven. It is better to choose hard and not sweet fruits for such a snack.

Sweet dishes

The most popular banana dishes are desserts and baked goods. Sweet dishes made from banana pulp are tasty and aromatic. Natural sugars in the fruit give dishes a moderate, pleasant sweetness and reduce their calorie content, since there is no need to add sugar to desserts or baked goods.

Banana ice cream

Banana pulp can be frozen and pureed to make delicious and healthy ice cream. Before you cook red bananas, you need to make sure they are ripe enough. Only ripe fruits will make a delicious dessert.

To prepare a serving of ice cream, you need to take one medium ripe banana and cut it into 5 - 6 pieces. They are placed in a ziplock bag and placed in the freezer for 3 – 4 hours. After this, the banana pieces are thrown into a blender and pureed until smooth. If desired, you can add cocoa and cream to the ice cream. In the photo below you can see the prepared delicacy.

Banana pancakes

You can make banana pancakes for breakfast. They are nutritious, flavorful, and low in calories. A serving of a dish made from the listed ingredients will contain no more than 300 kcal. To prepare red banana pancakes you need:

  • 1 ripe fruit;
  • 1 egg;
  • 1 tablespoon flour;
  • 1 tablespoon sour cream;
  • vanillin.

All ingredients are sent to a blender and pureed until smooth. The resulting dough is poured in portions onto a non-stick frying pan and pancakes are baked on both sides. Ready-made pancakes can be topped with jam or condensed milk.

For meat as a side dish

Bananas can be served as a side dish for meat dishes. To do this, it is better to use dense, unripe fruits. They are not so sweet and retain their shape better when cooked.

Before preparing red bananas, they are peeled and cut into pieces. If the fruits will be stewed, it is better to cut them into cubes or circles. For frying, you can cut the fruits into thin slices.

You can fry banana pulp in vegetable oil: sunflower, avocado oil, coconut. Just 5-6 minutes is enough and the dish is ready. To give it flavor, spices and aromatic herbs are added to it. Oregano, coriander, ground black pepper, and grain mustard go well with bananas. You can use lingonberry or cranberry sauce as a sauce for this side dish.

You can also bake bananas in the oven. This dish will be less high in calories and more healthy. The pulp is cut into pieces, then salted, peppered, sprinkled with herbs and sent to the oven. Baked bananas topped with mozzarella cheese are delicious. You can use other cheese, including hard cheese.

Interesting in appearance, pleasant in taste and even more beneficial in chemical composition, red bananas are definitely worth trying, and if possible, include them in your menu on a regular basis. The exotic “brothers” of yellow dessert bananas will be an excellent addition to a healthy diet.

Pest and disease control

Since Red Banana tomatoes are not particularly resistant to diseases, seedlings must be treated with a fungicide 5-7 weeks before transplanting to the garden bed. To do this, you can use any proven drug (one to choose from):

  • Bordeaux mixture;
  • "Tattu";
  • "Ordan";
  • "Topaz";
  • "Profit";
  • "Skor."

In summer it is necessary to monitor insects. If aphids, whiteflies and other pests are found on the bushes, it is worth treating with insecticides:

  • "Match";
  • "Vertimek";
  • "Fitoverm";
  • "Aktara";
  • "Spark";
  • "Confidor";
  • "Biotlin."

If the bushes grow in a garden bed, spraying is carried out late in the evening, in the absence of strong wind and rain. If chemicals are used, the crop can be harvested only after the waiting period has expired (3-5 days). Treatment can also be carried out with solutions based on home remedies - baking soda, ammonia, onion peels, chopped garlic, chili pepper and others.

Important! In the fall, it is advisable to wash the greenhouse with an antiseptic or treat it with a tobacco smoke bomb. This will reliably protect plants from fungal infections and other pests.

Harvest and storage

Following the rules of sowing and care will allow you to grow up to 10 pumpkins on one bush. The fruits can be harvested after the first light frost. The primary signs of maturation are a clearly defined bark pattern and hardening.

Description of the Matilda pumpkin variety, features of cultivation and careRead

You can store pumpkin in the refrigerator or in a cool, dark room. One of the important conditions is the absence of excess moisture. Otherwise, the crop may begin to rot and become moldy. If you need to store pumpkin for a long time, you should choose only well-ripened fruits that have no obvious stains or damage.

Features of care

Rapid seed germination is only possible if additional plant care measures are taken. For this purpose, many gardeners cover the holes with film, creating greenhouse conditions. When shoots appear in the film, you need to cut holes up to 10 cm through which ventilation will occur.

This creates favorable conditions for growth, since the soil temperature is several degrees higher than usual, and moisture evaporation is sharply reduced.

During periods of dry weather, when flowers bloom and when fruits are filling, plants should be watered generously with water at a temperature of more than 20 degrees. Periodically, the beds require removing weeds and loosening the soil. In order not to damage the root system, the soil is loosened first by 8–10 cm, and then by 5–6 cm.
