Growing potatoes Magician

Growing potatoes is a simple matter. Every gardener with even a little knowledge considers it his duty to grow it in his own garden. And this is an absolutely correct decision, because potatoes contain a lot of potassium, starch and vitamins.

Of course, before you start sowing potatoes, you should decide on the variety. To do this, you should take into account climatic conditions and, of course, soil characteristics.

Today I would like to tell you about a wonderful variety that belongs to the super-elite category and is a new product of Russian selection - this is the Magician potato.

Main characteristics of root crops and potato bushes Magician

This variety has an oval shape, a fairly smooth light brown skin with small eyes.

The leaves are small, oblong and smooth at the edges. The size ranges from 14 to 21 cm. Potato inflorescences are large in size and have a pleasant smell.

The tubers themselves are quite large (about 115 grams), starchy (13-15% is slightly above normal), with dense white pulp. Flowering bushes have an attractive appearance: lush, straight, light green in color with numerous white flowers.

Growing conditions and watering of Charodey potatoes

If the weather does not spoil your area with rain, then this variety will be the best choice because it has a very powerful root system. Potatoes of this variety are considered early, and therefore rapid ripening does not require large expenses in terms of watering. About three to four waterings are sufficient for the entire ripening period.

Thanks to the spreading shape of the tops, moisture is retained in the soil for a longer period, and evaporation under the scorching rays of the sun is not as intense.

In the event of prolonged daily rains, when many potato varieties begin to turn black and, ultimately, may even die, the Charodey variety exhibits increased vitality.

Consumer properties of the Charodey potato

This variety has excellent taste characteristics. The Magician potato has a light creamy flesh and a sweetish taste. After cutting, the tubers do not darken in water and do not produce a dark broth.

By the way, the fruits of this potato do not have internal voids, which is very convenient when peeling and cutting.

It cooks quickly enough; when cooked, it becomes moderately crumbly. This variety is considered the best for making mashed potatoes or fried potatoes. The sorcerer potatoes can be stored for winter preparations for a long time and without problems. It is also not susceptible to long-term transportation.

How to care for Sorcerer potatoes

This variety of potatoes does not require special care - you just need to periodically loosen the soil and clear it of weeds. It is also resistant to all kinds of diseases and pests. Including the causative agent of potato cancer and late blight, as well as viral diseases and common scab. In the event of an attack by the Colorado potato beetle, it has minor damage. It is susceptible only to golden potato cyst nematode. However, you should not experiment too much with this and it is still better to treat the plant with special means.

To prevent and control viral diseases (speckled, ring, aucuba mosaic and others), you can use insecticide sprays (no more than 3 applications per growing season), effective against the main vectors - aphids, cicadas and grass bugs. For benefit, it is good to feed with organic matter (mullein, etc.) and use growth regulators.

How to plant the Charodey potato variety

Cultivation is carried out in open ground: “former” places where perennial and annual grasses, flax, winter and grain crops grow are suitable. It is customary to plant seed potatoes from late April to early June (depending on the region and its climatic conditions), to a depth of about 10 cm, according to a pattern of 60*35 cm (the distance between rows is about 60 cm, between bushes in the same row is 35 cm).

The period of potato ripening from the moment of germination above the ground is on average 60-80 calendar days (but not more than three months), the tops die from the moment of planting after 100-115 days. From one hectare you can easily harvest about 200-300 centners of potatoes (in a good year it can reach up to 400 centners/ha).

According to experienced breeders, potatoes have high yields, so they can be planted twice a season. And what’s remarkable is that the second time the potatoes are in no way inferior in either taste or quantitative characteristics to the first.

Landing

Potato Enchanter grows best in light soils: sandy, loamy, sandy loam, chernozem. In clay soil, the culture develops slowly and is susceptible to fungal diseases.

The soil for potatoes is prepared in the fall. The beds are dug up, weeds and remnants of previous crops are removed. Fertilizers include humus and wood ash.

Important! Potatoes Magician are planted after cucumbers, cabbage, beets and green manure. If tomatoes, eggplants, peppers or other varieties of potatoes grew in the garden bed, you should choose a different place for the crop.

Healthy tubers weighing from 70 to 100 g are selected for planting. Planting material is assessed visually and tubers with traces of rotting, cracks and other defects are rejected.

Potatoes of the Charodey variety are kept in the basement or cellar in winter. A month before planting, the tubers are transferred to light and kept at a temperature of 15 degrees. For planting, select potatoes with sprouts up to 15 mm long, which are treated with Epin solution to stimulate growth.

Potatoes Magician are planted in furrows or holes. In sandy soil, tubers are buried by 10 cm, in clay soil - by 5 cm. There should be 30-40 cm between the bushes. Rows are placed in increments of 70-80 cm.

Reviews about the variety

Potatoes of the “Sorcerer” variety have excellent taste characteristics; the tubers have light cream flesh and a sweetish, very pleasant taste. When cut, the potato flesh does not darken in water; there is no dark broth during cooking. You can cook “Sorcerer” potatoes quite quickly; after cooking, the flesh is crumbly.

Potatoes of the “Sorcerer” variety do not have any striking properties that would significantly distinguish them from other potato varieties. Nevertheless, it is a reliable variety, the tubers have excellent taste, and are resistant to high temperatures and most diseases. It can be grown both for personal consumption and for sale.

Care

To obtain a high yield, the Magician variety is given good care. Before emergence, the soil is loosened so that the tubers receive more oxygen. Periodically weed the weeds.

When the shoots appear, you need to loosen the soil between the rows. Loosening after watering and rain is especially important, which avoids the formation of a crust.

The Magician variety is not watered until the buds appear. When flowering begins, the soil is constantly moistened. When the soil dries 7 cm, start watering.

Potato plantings are watered with warm water in the evening. Each bush requires 2-3 liters of water. During drought, the field is watered more often, up to 3-5 times during the season.

Hilling and feeding

An obligatory step in caring for Sorcerer potatoes is hilling. The procedure is carried out twice per season: when the bushes reach a height of 15 cm and before flowering begins. As a result, the formation of new root shoots is activated, the soil is saturated with oxygen and weeds are destroyed.

Hilling is carried out after watering or rain. The soil is raked from the rows onto the potato bushes. To do this, use pitchforks or special equipment.

Fertilizing potatoes with Magic helps to increase productivity:

  • with active growth of tops;
  • during the formation of buds;
  • during the flowering period.

The first feeding is necessary for the Magician variety with slow development of bushes. Nutrients are needed by plants with thin stems and pale leaves.

For treatment, a solution is prepared based on slurry, which saturates the plants with nitrogen. It is also allowed to water the potatoes with a urea solution in the amount of 1 tsp. on a bucket of water.

The second treatment requires a solution consisting of 1 cup of wood ash and 1 tbsp. l. potassium sulfate. Fertilizer improves the taste of potatoes and promotes abundant flowering.

The third feeding of the Charodey variety is carried out using 1 tbsp. l. superphosphate per 10 liters of water. The treatment stimulates the formation of tubers. 0.5 liters of the resulting solution is poured under each bush.

Diseases and pests

Potato diseases are caused by fungal spores, viruses and lack of nutrients. The greatest danger to plants are viral diseases (mosaic, leaf curl), which are spread by poor-quality planting material and insects.

The most common fungal disease of potatoes is late blight. The lesion in the form of dark spots appears on leaves and tubers. To protect plantings from late blight, agricultural practices are followed and spraying is carried out with Bordeaux mixture, copper oxychloride, and a solution of the drug Ridomil.

Important! The greatest damage to plantings is caused by the Colorado potato beetle and stem nematode.

Spraying with Karate, Arrivo, and Sumi-Alpha helps against the Colorado potato beetle. The treatment is carried out when the larvae appear and repeated after 10 days.

Nematode is a representative of worms that damages potato tubers and tops. The pest penetrates the soil along with planting material and garden tools. Effective methods for controlling the nematode have not been developed, so increased attention is paid to the selection of tubers for planting and subsequent care.

Harvesting

The sorcerer potatoes are harvested in the mid-early period. Tubers are harvested 65-80 days after emergence.

If the tops of the bushes have withered, harvesting begins within 3 weeks. After being in the ground for a long time, the tubers lose weight and are worse stored.

2 weeks before harvesting, it is recommended to mow the tops, leaving about 10 cm above the ground, and remove them from the site. In summer, bushes attract pathogens and pests. Tubers are dug up in warm, dry weather at a temperature of 10-17 degrees.

The tubers are left on the field until the end of harvesting to dry. The dug up potatoes are kept in a dark, dry place for 2 weeks. During this period, the skin of the tubers will become harder. Then the potatoes are sorted and specimens with traces of disease or damage are rejected. Healthy tubers are stored in a cool, dry place in winter.

Origin story

The Magician potato was bred by the Leningrad Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture "Belogorka". In 1996, an application was submitted to include the variety in the state register.

After testing in 2000, the Magician potato was registered in the state register. It is recommended for cultivation in the Northern and Northwestern regions, the Volga region, the Central Black Sea region, the North Caucasus and the Far East.

Potatoes, which have the magical power to bear fruit in different climatic conditions, were given a name that best suits their character - Sorcerer. Thus began the history of a plant with a memorable, downright fabulous name. Later, the Magician potato was included in the list of the 10 best varieties in the country and recommended for cultivation for industrial purposes, in household plots and garden plots.
