Tomato Vater Rein, reviews from summer residents, characteristics of the variety, planting and care

Characteristics and description of the variety

The mid-season tomato variety Vater Rijn is recommended to be grown in greenhouse conditions. The bushes reach a height of 1.5 meters, plants with medium foliage.

One fruit weighs approximately 450-600 grams, the tomato is heart-shaped with a sharp small spout on the top; when ripe, the tomatoes acquire a bright red color. The pulp is juicy, fleshy, practically seedless, and has a sweet and sour taste.

Fruit ripening time is 95-105 days. When a plant is formed into 2-3 stems, one bush brings about 4-6 kg of tomatoes, and 15-20 kg of tomatoes are harvested from one square.

The nuances of growing in open ground and in a greenhouse

The Vater Rein variety is generally not capricious; it responds gratefully to fertilizing. Gardeners advise fertilizing tomatoes once every seven days. Slender bushes do not become fattened compared to heavily leafy tomatoes.

When cultivating in a greenhouse, it is necessary to control the humidity level. Excess leads to late blight and brown spot.

The crop reacts painfully to a sharp drop in temperature, so in the middle zone it is recommended to grow tomatoes in greenhouses. In the south, in open ground, there may be a decrease in yield during drought. In such cases, increase the frequency of watering.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Vater Rein tomatoes perfectly combine taste, originality of shape and yield; they have many advantages:

  • excellent taste;
  • attractive appearance;
  • high productivity;
  • tomatoes are universal in use;
  • fleshy seedless pulp.

Disadvantages of the variety:

  • plants cannot tolerate cold;
  • bushes require constant garter;
  • Tomatoes can only be grown in greenhouse conditions.

Agricultural technology

Tomatoes are grown in seedlings. Seeds are sown approximately 50 - 60 days before transplanting into the ground. By the way, many people note that the seedlings look very frail. Planting density - 3, maximum 4 plants per 1 square meter. The bushes must be tied to a support. Form a plant with 2 - 3 stems. Timely pinching and removal of the top helps to achieve the best yield. When formed into 1 stem, with 2 - 3 brushes, very large specimens can be grown. Preventative spraying is required.

Despite its advanced age, not much is known about the Vater Rein variety. Vegetable growers keep it in their collection primarily for its amazingly beautiful fruits and excellent taste. According to many, the crop shows the best results when grown in protected soil. If you managed to get a real variety, then you can always collect seed material from the most beautiful tomato yourself.

Features of cultivation

Universal soil for planting can be purchased at the store. This mixture is easy to prepare at home; you take nutritious soil, add sand and peat additives (2:1:1). Before planting, seed material should be soaked in a solution of potassium permanganate to avoid diseases.

At the end of February, the seeds are planted in containers, covered with a layer of soil and watered. You can cover the container with film for several days to speed up germination; it is better to move the containers closer to the light in a warm place.

After 8-10 days after sowing, sprouts appear, the film material is removed, and the seedlings are moved to a cool room (temperature 14-16 degrees), this is done for the purpose of hardening the seedlings. After a week, the temperature begins to gradually rise until it reaches 22-24 degrees. During seedling growth, you need to water the soil as needed; excess moisture can cause root rot.

Transplantation from individual containers is done when the seedlings become stronger and produce a couple of leaves. Seedlings need good lighting; if this is not enough, you can additionally turn on daylight lamps. There should be at least 16 hours of daylight for seedlings.

It is better to place the greenhouse in the southern or southwestern part of the garden. After 55-65 days, the seedlings are transferred to the site. The land for planting must be prepared in advance, organic and mineral fertilizers must be applied, and then the area must be dug up. Seedlings are planted in the holes, the soil is compacted and watered. The planting pattern for bushes is 30 cm by 40 cm. A support for a garter should be installed near the bushes. After a couple of weeks, the first garter is made to the plants. No more than 3 plants are planted per square meter.

What are the actions of the sower?

Description of actions from the very beginning:

  • Tomato seeds for seedlings are placed in the ground two months before transplanting the seedlings into the soil, into a greenhouse.
  • The growth turns out to be frail, but this is just an appearance - don’t panic! In fact, the plant is healthy, there is nothing to worry about (well, maybe with rare exceptions).
  • In order for seedlings to grow better, it is necessary to consider a lighting system for the greenery. It is preferable to use fluorescent lamps (daylight) for this purpose. Backlight mode – 14–15 hours a day.
  • The seedlings are distributed according to the following scheme: three plants per square meter of land. Such varieties are planted very carefully, the main thing is not to damage the roots of the plant.

As the tomato grows, it is necessary to carry out all the important operations with it: pinching, removing excess leaves, timely feeding, trimming flowers in clusters, moisturizing in extreme heat, and much more.

Tomatoes of this variety are harvested upon their ripening, preferably immediately before a meal. For harvesting, the fruits are picked approximately twice a week.

Tomato care

Basic requirements for plant care:

  • soil hilling is carried out 2-3 times per season;
  • the bushes are quite tall, so every 2-3 weeks, as they grow, they garter the bushes;
  • timely watering: pour a liter of water under one bush; it is better to water in the evening, when the sun has already set;
  • weeds need to be removed regularly;
  • Tomatoes are fertilized three times during the summer, organic matter is added 15 days after planting, manure can be mixed with superphosphate, mineral supplements are added every next two weeks.

Vater Rhein tomato variety

A very interesting variety of German selection, called Vater Rhein (original name - Vater Rhein) is a rather old variety, according to available information, which is included in the Gene Bank of the German Plant Institute, named after Leibniz. It is not listed in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia. Distributed by amateur breeders, often marked “Copyright seeds.” Sometimes the specified characteristics do not correspond to the received ones. This may be due to weather conditions, improper care or mis-grading. According to observations, the tomato is suitable for growing in central Russia in protected soil.

Description

The plant is a semi-determinate type, of moderate growth vigor, up to 1.5 meters high. The description says that the bush is not spreading, slender, weakly leafy, with drooping, thin green leaves of the usual type. The shoot-forming ability is low. Internodes are not long. The fruit cluster is mainly formed from 3 - 5 ovaries. Inflorescences are formed every 2 - 3 leaves.

The fruits are beautiful. The shape is charming, heart-shaped, with an elongated nose at the top, the surface is slightly ribbed, there are cheeks at the base, and the density is moderate. The skin is not thick, glossy. An unripe tomato is light green, without a spot at the stalk. When ripe, it turns bright red. The pulp is very fleshy, tender, juicy, sugary when broken, aromatic. The consistency, as described, is oily, but dense enough to hold its shape when cut. There are many seed chambers, more than 6, but they are small and have few seeds. The varietal tomato has an excellent taste, sweet, with a hint of sourness.

But to achieve a decent result, it is important that the tomatoes fully ripen on the bush. Some compare the taste of our hero with the Babushkino variety, but note that Vater Rhein is much meatier

True, there are vegetable growers who were dissatisfied with the taste, calling it bland. The variety is famous for its large fruit, the weight of tomatoes is from 400 to 700 grams. Some foreign sources indicate a smaller mass - 200 - 300 grams. Vegetable growers often confirm this information, pointing out that normal weight is still closer to these indicators. The largest fruits ripen in the lower clusters, while in the upper ones they are quite small.

Characteristics

  • In terms of ripening, our hero is classified as mid-season. On average, 110 days pass from the emergence of seedlings to the start of fruiting. After transplanting the seedlings, the fruits ripen in 70 - 75 days;
  • Many tomato growers note the variety’s resistance to cracking. The fruits can withstand even small hail in open ground;
  • There is no exact information about tomato yield. Seed distributors claim the high productivity of the variety, and the same information is also found on foreign websites. But many vegetable growers talk about average or low yields;
  • There is no specific information about the immunity of the Vater Rhein, there are only general phrases about good resistance to major diseases;
  • the transportability of the fruit is at an average level, but many people call the keeping quality good;
  • method of use is universal. First of all, tomatoes are used for making salads, but they are also suitable for processing into juices, sauces, and pastes.

Diseases and pests

If you allow high humidity in a greenhouse, a number of diseases can occur:

  • septoria;
  • late blight;
  • crown rot;
  • macrosporiosis.

Copper sulfate (4-5%) is used against fungal diseases, Barrier or Hom preparations are used, fertilizing with potassium fertilizers can also give results in the fight against diseases.

Harmful insects love to settle on tasty tomatoes, among them: aphids, mole crickets, and whiteflies. Insecticides will help control pests.

Agricultural technology

Like most representatives of the culture, it is preferable to grow Antyufey in seedlings. It is advisable to calculate the sowing time yourself, taking into account the climate and growing conditions. For example, in central Russia, the sowing time falls in the second ten days of March. Seedlings necessarily dive in the phase of 2 true leaves. The recommended planting density in protected soil is up to 4 plants per 1 square meter; in open soil you can compact up to 5 bushes in the same area. But the plantings should not be too thick; the plants should be well ventilated so that favorable conditions do not arise for the development of fungal infections. Therefore, if the leaves of bushes growing nearby are in close contact, they should be shortened. The plants are tied to a support; in an ordinary garden bed, our hero can be grown as a stake crop. The most abundant harvest is obtained when the plant is formed into 3 stems. Timely pinching helps increase the productivity of tomatoes. Agricultural technology is common for the crop as a whole. But in a greenhouse you need to control the humidity of the air and soil.

Most Russian tomato growers have yet to become acquainted with this variety. But those few who have already grown the new product speak with confidence about its prospects. The testing showed high productivity of the crop, regardless of growing conditions. Tomatoes have excellent external characteristics, they are resistant to cracking and do not suffer from blossom end rot. The taste is undoubtedly high, but it can let you down if some nuances are not observed. If during the ripening period the plant suffered from waterlogging of the soil and lack of light, then the pulp may turn out to be watery and tasteless. Care is easy, and this is a big plus, since even a beginner can grow Antyufey. No particular shortcomings were identified in the culture. The only negative is that tomato seeds will have to be purchased each time before sowing.

Description of the Vater Rein tomato, cultivation and common plant diseases

A good choice for gardeners is the Vater Rhein tomato, which is most often used for preparing summer salads, ketchup or sauce and preparations for the winter.

Description of the variety and its yield

The tomato variety Vater Rein resembles the Oxheart variety in shape. Most often it is grown in greenhouses. Late-ripening tomatoes delight the eye with their bright red color.

The foliage of the plant cannot be called very lush; the leaves are elongated and thin. Vater Rein is a tomato variety whose weight most often reaches 500-600 g. However, with special care you can grow a one-kilogram giant. The tomato is superior to other varieties in terms of taste. Its fruit has a sweetish-sour taste, which is ideal in the summer heat.

The yield of the Vater Rein variety is very high. From one bush you can collect approximately 5 kg per season. The location influences the yield.

It is important that there is a lot of solar heat and light. The landing area should not be blown by winds

With proper soil treatment, the expected result can be achieved.

Growing rules

Large fruits that you can show off to your neighbors can only be achieved with good care. And this type of tomato, although high-yielding, at the same time remains quite whimsical.

Good lighting and nutrition are decisive factors for this tomato variety.

Before planting, it is important to moisten the soil. Here the preparation of the land is more important than its composition itself.

After the seeds are evenly distributed, they are covered with a layer of soil approximately 0.5 cm thick.

The first watering of seeds deserves special attention. It cannot be carried out from a watering can - it is better to carefully use a spray bottle. The following daily waterings can already be done using a watering can.

Water every day until the seeds sprout. After the seedlings emerge from the ground, weak shoots need to be removed. This will give more space to the stems, which can produce a rich harvest. If this is not done, then soon all the sprouts will become fragile and painful.

To make the stems of Vater Rein tomatoes stronger and larger, add 3-5 mm of new soil as they grow. Most often, seedlings grow decent and strong and do not require feeding.

Planting of seedlings should be carried out only when there is confidence that frosts are no longer expected, which means at the end of May. When planting, the gap between the rows should reach 100 cm, and in the row between the stems - 30-50 cm.

It is good to pick them before using. It is then that you can feel all the notes of the subtle taste of tomatoes of this variety.

Common diseases of Vater Rhein tomatoes

Yields may be reduced by both extreme cold and extreme heat.

In summer there is a lot of stuffiness, so it is important to moisten the plants. Most often, tomato diseases can be caused by insects, namely their flying representatives.

Diseased plants should be removed to prevent the disease from spreading to other strong stems. Vater Rhein tomatoes can be partially protected by planting plants with a strong scent near them. This will repel insects.

Although the Vater Rein tomato variety can be called whimsical, the result with good care is worth it. Reviews for this variety of tomatoes are very high. Vater Rein is loved by many gardeners for its taste and attractive appearance. Of course, there are also negative reviews. It is better to make sure from your own experience that the description of the variety corresponds to reality.

Useful tips for getting a high yield of tomatoes

  1. Green herbal infusions can be used as fertilizer. Not every gardener has the opportunity to feed tomatoes with manure, but weed infusions are an excellent replacement for mullein and bird droppings. In this case, you should infuse the composition for at least 5-6 days, and then water the plants, diluting the infusion with warm water.
  2. Tomatoes are watered only with settled and warm water. The optimum temperature should be between +21ºC…+23ºC. Watering with cold water in a greenhouse leads to diseases and wilting of plants.
  3. To improve productivity, plants are sprayed with various compositions: preparations Ovary, Bud, boric acid solution, iodine.
  4. It is recommended to lightly shake tomato bushes during the period of mass flowering in the morning to improve pollination.
  5. For this variety of tomatoes, pinching is a mandatory technique and should not be neglected.
  6. After the fruits on the first cluster are formed, the lower leaves of the tomatoes are carefully removed (no more than 1-2 leaves at a time).
  7. At the end of July - beginning of August, it is recommended to pinch the top of the plant and also remove all inflorescences that have not set fruit. This will allow the tomatoes to direct all their energy to the formation and ripening of the set fruits.

To prevent late blight, tomatoes are sprayed with Bordeaux mixture (1); brown spot is prevented by spraying the bushes with copper-containing preparations.
