Description of cucumbers Leaf F1
Initially, the Leaf F1 cucumber, a description and photo of which is given in the article, was intended for obtaining an early harvest of greens in open ground conditions. It was zoned for the southern regions of Russia. But gradually the variety gained popularity among owners of private land plots, and began to confidently establish itself in ridges and greenhouses throughout the country. A parthenocarpic or self-pollinating hybrid shows excellent results when grown indoors, even in the northwestern regions and Siberia.
Important! Cucumber Leaf F1 is a first generation hybrid of Dutch selection. As a rule, such varieties are cold-resistant, high-yielding, with a high proportion of quality fruits. But, according to vegetable growers, their taste characteristics often suffer. When creating this variety, breeders managed to achieve an optimal balance.
Cucumber Leaf F1 is an indeterminate or unlimited growth plant. However, the bushes rarely grow higher than 2.0-2.5 m, so vegetable growers do not experience any difficulties in caring for this variety. Moreover, the number of side shoots is small, they grow rather slowly, and the bushes themselves, when formed correctly, turn out to be open.
The central stem of the cucumber. Leaf F1 is powerful, gray-green in color and covered with slight pubescence. The side shoots match it. They hold the fruit with ease. Greens are formed in the axils of the leaves along the stem at a short distance. 2-3 cucumbers are formed in each node.
Cucumber leaves Leaf F1 are medium or small in size, characterized by a rounded shape with slightly pronounced five tips. The edges of the dark green leaf blades are slightly wavy and finely serrated. Their almost smooth outer side may have a slight pubescence of a grayish tint.
Advantages and disadvantages
The cucumber variety Artist F1 has the following advantages:
- ultra early ripeness of fruits;
- long fruiting;
- excellent seed germination;
- absence of yellow areas in ripened fruits;
- good yield;
- resistance to diseases such as common mosaic, cladosporiosis, powdery mildew;
- tolerance to insufficient lighting;
- a high-quality presentation that allows the hybrid to be cultivated for sale;
- resistance to lack of moisture and hot weather;
- good ability to recover from the effects of soil drying out;
- versatility of fruit use.
Cucumber Artist F1 is a worthy variety, differing, however, in a number of features that can be considered as disadvantages:
- has an average yield for a hybrid; with proper agricultural technology it rarely exceeds 9 kg/sq. m.;
- requires the correct fertilization scheme.
The correct technique for growing the Artist F1 variety can minimize the disadvantages described above.
Characteristics of the variety
Cucumber Leaf F1 is an early ripening variety with a ripening period of 40-45 days. Depending on the growing conditions and planting time, the first fragrant cucumbers appear on the branches in the second half of July or early July. The variety is distinguished by long, uniform fruiting, which, in favorable conditions, continues until the end of August.
According to the State Register of Breeding Achievements, during commercial production, 1 hectare produces from 270 to 600 centners of fruit. On private farmsteads, the yield of Leaf F1 cucumber is slightly lower. However, 20-25 kg of greens are harvested from 1 m², which is an excellent result. Especially in regions with changeable weather conditions.
Planting and caring for cucumbers Leaf
Cucumber Leaf F1 is grown by seedlings or by direct planting in the ground. In the first case, the seeds are sown in containers filled with soil mixture in the second half of April. They are transplanted into the ground with the appearance of 3-5 true leaves with the onset of warm weather.
In open ground, cucumber seeds Leaf F1 are sown in prepared beds in the 2-3rd decade of May at the rate of 3-4 plants per 1 m². The site is first prepared. They dig to a bayonet depth with a shovel, add compost and potassium-phosphorus fertilizers.
My favorite cucumbers - Dacha Tips magazine, May 2022
I am often asked the question: what is the best cucumber? There are a lot of cucumbers, they vary in size, taste, transportability, early ripening, unpretentiousness, etc.
I divided the leaders among cucumbers into two teams: the Russian Team (5 Russian breeding firms) and the World Team (6 foreign breeding firms), which are presented in the figure below, in addition, I will give information: who can replace or supplement them this year - you decide!
Agro presents: cucumber match between the Russian Team and the World Team
Cucumber Courage F1 (Gavrish company). Captain of the Russian national team. Why?
- Yield standard.
- Standard for taste.
- Standard for seed sales volumes in the Samara region.
- The length of the cucumber is 12-14 cm, and there are up to 10 cucumbers from under the leaf, which is very important for large producers. To get a good quality cucumber: do not overwater it and give high doses of nitrogen fertilizers - the cucumber will be soft.
The cucumber has a weak root system and measures need to be taken to increase it. In particular, remove flowers from the first four leaves (blind the first four nodes).
At high temperatures, it is necessary to hang non-woven material, or better yet, non-woven material with a thin film of 20 microns. If you do not do this, then instead of thorns there will be small white dots on the fruits - the marketability drops sharply.
Who can replace Courage F1 cucumber? I will name two cucumbers - Mamluk F1 and Ataman F1 cucumber.
Cucumber Mamluk F1 is slightly larger (14-16 cm) compared to Courage F1. More transportable, dense, dark green, beautiful, heat resistant.
Cucumber Ataman F1 , in comparison with Courage F1, is also longer - 14-16 cm, there are no bouquets (1-3 cucumbers in a node, after reaching 4-5 stepsons), it is characterized by greater heat resistance, a powerful root system, and transportability. The yield is close to that of Courage F1.
Cucumber Herman F1 . Why is he the captain?
- A leader in all growing conditions - in open ground and in film greenhouses, for fresh use and preservation.
- The cucumber is without bitterness, ripens very early and smoothly, is resistant to diseases, and protects the leaves well from the sun.
- Time-tested and seed sales do not decline. However, there is also a peculiarity: hard skin, which is good for transportation, storage and preservation, but bad for salads. The Herman F1 cucumber is old, and we need a more modern one, and most importantly, a more productive one.
I will name a few backups from the Seminis company.
- Masha F1 is especially popular in the south due to its higher heat and cold resistance.
- Meringue F1 is more tasty and bears fruit longer.
- Monisia F1 - even more tasty, grows slower, high fruit uniformity, no yellowness at the tip, withstands low temperatures well in the second whorl. Disadvantage: discontinued, but seeds are still available for summer residents.
Cucumber SV 4097 CV . The cucumber is 11-13 cm long, with clearly defined thorns, a very beautiful dark green color, forms fewer side shoots, with a powerful root system. Resistance to temperature changes and low light levels is high. A small problem is that large leaves temporarily wither during the day during high July temperatures. Especially when there is a lack of water. However, with the presence of nonwoven material, this problem is solved.
Benefits for summer residents and beginning farmers: • resistant to stress; • forgives shortcomings during cultivation; • easy to collect fruits; • there is no shedding of greens, everything turns out, and there is no yellowness on the tip of the cucumber.
All this suggests that this cucumber is an improved Herman F1.
A substitute for cucumber SV 4097 CV F1, if it needs to be grown in February - March (has tolerance to low light), is the very early cucumber SV 3506 CV F1 , which has a rich green color throughout the entire fruiting period.
Cucumber Bjorn F1 (Enza Zaden). Early, size 10-12 cm. Leader in early harvest yield, tasty, transportable, sets fruit well, does not barrel, dark green color without light stripes.
Backup No. 1 for open ground is the Gunnar F1 , 12-14 cm long, very early, short side shoots provide less labor-intensive care and ease of harvesting. When outgrown, they do not become barrel-shaped.
Understudy No. 2 - cucumber Cedric F1 . Given the ability to grow cucumbers, Cedric F1 is more productive than Gunnar F1, but, however, less tasty.
Cucumber Excelsior F1 (Enza Zaden). Early, with good transportability, dark green, sparsely tuberculate. A node usually produces 1-3 fruits. However, in case of stress (for example, cold weather) it can form bunches of ovaries. For late plantings in open ground - cucumber No. 1. It’s a pity that it has been discontinued, but seeds for summer residents are still on sale.
Its competitors for the duration of fruiting in 2022 were cucumbers Samkit F1 and Samsur F1 .
There is also a competitor to the Excelsior F1 cucumber - Severin F1 , which is also popular with large producers. The cucumber has a tough skin that allows the cucumber to last for 2 weeks, which is of interest to large chains. However, the taste will be lower. Choose what is important to you!
Cucumber Bonus F1 (Grinomics). The cucumber is 12-14 cm long, very tender, gives a high yield with minimal care, has a very high potential, which Chinese farmers took advantage of, which surprised even the breeder himself.
So far, backup number 1 is the Beaumond F1 cucumber (Grinomics). It is more productive, 12-14 cm long, up to 10 cucumbers are formed from under the leaf, a more even cucumber, better for canning (more crunchy), but so far few people know it and it takes time to be tested and implemented.
The Nunhems company has two spiky cucumbers:
Director F1 - length 12.5 cm, thanks to its excellent taste, it quickly fell in love with summer residents and greenhouse growers. The fruit pulp is crispy, very juicy, tasty with small seeds and without bitterness.
Bettina F1 . The cucumber is 10-12 cm long, coarsely tuberous, cylindrical, and has a delicate taste. Tolerant to low light and stress. And yet, fruits form quickly in the spring, even on a small plant.
Cucumber Samsur F1 . What is the “trick” of a cucumber? It has many advantages:
- Very tasty, 9-11 cm long;
- Beautiful - thorns along the entire length of the cucumber - the price for 1 kg in the markets of Samara is the highest;
- Continuously bears fruit;
- Tolerant to cold and heat compared to many other cucumbers.
Feature: due to the continuity of fruiting, it is necessary to regularly water and remove excess shoots. The main competitors in terms of fruiting duration in 2022 were cucumbers: Samkit F1 and Excelsior F1.
Long spiky very tasty cucumbers
Shade-tolerant for planting from January 15 - these are cucumbers grown for > 10 years.
Kinglet F1 (14-16 cm), Emerald F1 (14-16 cm), Julia F1 (in open ground 12-14 cm, in protected 14-16 cm).
From 2022 there will be a sharp rise in demand for cucumber Fierce F1 (14-16 cm). Farmers note: it is especially tasty during the 2 months of fruiting. For the spring-summer-autumn season of 2021, the Samkit F1 cucumber is in great demand among summer residents and small farmers.
Cucumber Samkit F1 (Grinomics). The greens are elongated - cylindrical, dark green, often tuberculate, 22-25 cm long, weighing 180-250 g or more, crispy with thin skin.
This is the pride of our company! The main thing is that this is the most delicious bee-pollinated cucumber and at the same time dense, my children and grandchildren love it very much. This is the #1 cucumber for me personally for canning. It is noticeable that due to the fact that it has a hard and large leaf, it is less damaged by pests (aphids and mites), take note of this.
Smooth cucumbers
Smooth, delicious cucumbers are becoming more and more popular every year.
For planting from January 15, we recommend the most delicious shade-tolerant cucumber Seryozha F1 (length 16-18 cm parthenocarpic) and cucumber Tristan F1 22-25 cm for greenhouses (Enza Zaden).
For spring and summer: Greenline F1 (length 17-19 cm Grinomics), Rambo F1 (10-12 cm Grinomics), Orzu F1 (10-13 cm Nunems), Saffa Mix F1 (16-18 cm for open ground (Semenis) .
Special small cucumbers only for open ground
Cucumber Swallow F1 (Crimean Breeding Station) length 8-12 cm, large-tubercular, high taste and disease resistance. Productivity 10-15 kg/m2.
Cucumber Leaf F1 (Rijk Zwaan). Early ripening, 38-39 days from germination. Large tuberous cucumber. Cucumber is recommended for pickling and pickling. The main thing is that it is very unpretentious when grown in open ground.
Finely tuberous cucumbers
Cucumber Hobbit F1 . Finely tuberous tasty cucumbers (N.N. Timofeev Breeding Station). Super early. In one node, 3-5 finely tuberculated gherkins, 10 cm long, are formed. The ovary is fascicular, the type of branching is bouquet. The dense structure of the greens, thin skin, and high sugar content give the cucumber excellent taste. Use – universal.
Cloud F1 . Early ripening, from germination to fruiting 37-39 days, 9-11 cm long. It is highly resistant to diseases and sets fruit well. Great for pickling and canning, as well as for salads.
There are many cucumbers, but I will name the five best:
- Courage F1
- Samsur F1
- Excelsior F1
- Samkit F1
- Greenline F1
These cucumbers will not bore you, because... they have their own characteristics of taste, size and fruiting time.

Diseases and pests
Cucumber Leaf F1 is practically not susceptible to diseases characteristic of the crop. For example, powdery mildew, olive spot, anthracnose. If signs of defeat appear, it most often occurs at the end of the season. Fight diseases with antifungal drugs
Among the pests on cucumber Leaf F1 you can find aphids and spider mites. The basis of the fight against insects is prevention, namely: maintaining an optimal microclimate in the greenhouse and keeping the beds clean. Infusions of pungent-smelling plants help get rid of aphids. Garlic feathers, onion peels, marigold flowers. Spider mites on cucumbers will have to be combated using chemicals.
