History of selection

The Candy Sweet Icicle tomato variety is the achievement of Brad Gates, a well-known private breeder from California in the USA. He does not cooperate with any agricultural companies, preferring to work alone.

Gates “specializes” in unusual varieties of tomatoes, distinguished not only by their original and attractive appearance, but also by their excellent taste. The variety Candy Sweet Icicles meets all the criteria that the breeder considers to be of paramount importance.

This is one of Gates' latest achievements. At home, gardeners became acquainted with the tomato about five years ago. It appeared in Russia quite recently, in 2022. It is, logically, not yet listed in the State Register, but the variety is definitely very interesting and promising.

The originality of the color of the tomato skin is one of the breeder’s “tricks”

Important! Among other varieties bred by Brad Gates, the most popular are Blood Moon, Atomic Sunset, Green Zebra Cherry, Painted Lady, Brad's Black Heart.

Description of the Honey Candy tomato, its characteristics and growing features

Many gardeners ask how to grow Sweetie tomato? Tomato is one of the favorite vegetables in our country, but most varieties are very labor-intensive to grow, so not all summer residents sow this crop on their plot. Breeders around the world produce every year many varieties of tomatoes that do not require much effort to grow.

Below we will consider 2 varieties of tomatoes with very tasty names: Candy and tomato Honey candy f1.

Description of tomato Sweetie

The description of the Sweetie variety is as follows: this variety is mid-season, the first tomatoes can be harvested in less than 4 months after planting. It is considered low-growing: plants rarely rise above 1 m in height.

The plant belongs to a small, so-called seedless group of tomatoes, among which are the varieties Casanova, Pink Giant, and Mother-in-Law. Of course, there are seeds there, but quite a few of them are formed in the fruits. Due to this feature, all the rich sweet taste of tomatoes remains in the pulp and is not transferred to the seeds.

Candy tomato seeds are treated at the factory against certain diseases that often affect this crop, which is why summer residents are deprived of their attempts to get a decent harvest.

The fruits have a round or flat-round shape, have a thin peel and a deep red hue, the average weight of each of them is 120-300 g. The variety's yield is high: 1 cluster of the plant can form up to 15 fruits.

The fruits are suitable for any type of processing, including canning, pickling, making juices, pastes, and sauces.

Description of the Honey Candy tomato

Characteristics and description of the Honey Candy tomato variety, reviews, photos can be seen below and on the Internet. This hybrid was bred by Russian breeders only in 2005, but over the years it has become very popular among summer residents, taking into account the fact that it can be grown not only in greenhouse conditions, but also in open ground.

The seeds of the widely known Russian are produced.

This tomato is mid-season: the first tomatoes are ready for harvest 3.5 months after planting the seeds, and its height does not exceed 1 m.

The variety has a high yield: from 1 bush you can get 2-4 kg of bright yellow tomatoes, each weighing on average about 70-90 g.

Tomatoes can be stored fresh for a long time and are also easily transported over long distances.

It is advisable to eat the fruits in the form of salads or in canned form; they are not suitable for making pastes, sauces and juice.

The seeds undergo careful treatment against various diseases, but despite this, tomatoes of this variety may be susceptible to the influence of phomosis (brown rot), which manifests itself due to the influence of fungal microorganisms.

In order to prevent the spread of the disease to the entire crop, you should carefully remove the affected fruits and destroy them, and treat the plants themselves with one of the following drugs according to the instructions attached to them:

  • Foundationazol.
  • Home.
  • A barrier.
  • Bordeaux mixture.
  • Oxychom.

In addition to diseases, tomatoes can be affected by certain pests:

  • mole crickets,
  • slugs,
  • whiteflies.

Pest control methods:

  • drug "Gnome";
  • a solution of dry mustard and hot pepper with water, prepared in a ratio of 1:1:1;
  • drug "Confidor".

Reviews from gardeners

Those who planted Sweetie tomatoes leave positive reviews about it. An avid gardener left the following review on the manufacturer’s website about the Honey Candy tomato, supplementing it with a photo of the grown crop.

Larisa Ivanovna, 52 years old, Moscow:

“I decided to plant tomatoes of this variety last season. I grew them in open ground. Productivity is high. Each bush was completely covered with elongated honey-colored fruits. Harvest until mid-September.

The sudden mild frost in September did not cause any damage to the plants and fruits of this variety, although seedlings of other tomato varieties died instantly. The tomatoes have excellent taste. Every day we prepared salads from them, and I preserved a lot of them for the winter.

I advise everyone to plant Honey Candy - you won’t regret it!”

Characteristics of tomato Candies Sweet icicles

Determinate variety. This means that the bush, having reached the height “programmed” by the breeder, stops growing. They turn out to be low: 0.5-0.7 m when planted in open ground and 1-1.2 m in a greenhouse or greenhouse.

The plants are not particularly compact, but not spreading either. The leaves are small, thin, and have a typical tomato shape. The foliage of the bush is average.

The variety is characterized by cluster fruiting. The fruits are small - weighing 30-50 g, 5-6 cm long. The skin is red-orange, closer to the stalk this shade is “diluted” with golden-yellow strokes and stripes. The shape of the tomatoes Candy Sweet icicles is plum-shaped, but due to the pronounced sharp “spout” they resemble pepper.

Tomatoes form and ripen in “clusters” of 8-12 pieces

The skin is quite strong, but not thick and rough. When eating, it is practically not felt. The fruits rarely crack.

The pulp has a dense texture, juicy, with a pronounced “tomato” aroma. But Tomatoes Candy Sweet Icicles are remembered, first of all, by their taste - it is very rich, unusually sweet, with a slight tart aftertaste. There are 2-3 seed chambers inside, there are few seeds, they are small.

Important! The first “version” of the Candy Sweet Icicles variety had a red-chocolate colored skin. This shade still appears on some bushes - this is the norm for the variety.

Tomato yield Candies Sweet icicles

There is no exact data regarding yield. On average, this indicator for growing tomatoes Candy Sweet icicles in a greenhouse is estimated at 9-12 kg/m², in open ground - 8-9 kg/m².

Gardeners who have experience growing the variety talk about very good harvests, noting that the bushes are literally strewn with clusters of fruits

Resistance to diseases and pests

The breeder does not mention in the description the “innate” immunity of the variety to any of the diseases typical for the crop. But the experience of gardeners suggests that plants get sick relatively rarely, even without preventive treatments. There is no particular “interest” in them from pests either.

Methods of application

The fruits have a universal purpose. Thanks to their original taste, they are very good fresh – both in salads and “just like that.”

Home canning is no worse: due to their small size, Candy Sweet Icicle tomatoes are ideal for whole-fruit pickling and pickling. The preparations turn out very beautiful, the tomatoes retain their bright color, shape, pulp consistency and richness of taste.

Description of the variety

This is a hybrid variety that was bred in Russia and quickly gained popularity among many gardeners. Honey Candy tomatoes are classified as hybrid plants that ripen within 101-110 days. These tomatoes are often called heavenly love.

In fact, such a bush does not grow large, usually its height reaches no more than 110 cm, the lowest plant can grow no more than 85 cm. They can be grown both in greenhouse conditions and in open ground.

And, of course, excellent resistance to various diseases and pests that live in and above the ground. Tomatoes have good yield: if you maintain them correctly, you can get at least 8 kg, maximum 10 kg from one bush.

Advantages and disadvantages

The undoubted advantages of Candy Sweet Icicles tomatoes include:

  • suitability for cultivation in open and closed ground;
  • the ability to withstand heat and cool weather without much damage to yourself and the crop;
  • good immunity;
  • consistently high productivity;
  • relatively small dimensions of the bushes;
  • original appearance and outstanding taste of the fruit;
  • versatility of crop purpose.

Tomatoes Candies Sweet icicles can be removed unripe, they ripen quickly at home

It was not possible to identify any significant objective deficiencies during the entire cultivation period. Relative minus: Sweet icicles candies are a variety, not a hybrid, of tomatoes. Therefore, it can theoretically be propagated by independently collected seeds. But in practice, this is almost impossible - there are very few seeds in the fruits, they rarely ripen, remaining mostly in an “emergency” state.

Sweets on a branch: varieties of cherry tomatoes for open ground in Siberia

Last season I planted several different hybrids of cherry tomatoes, and they all pleased me with a good harvest. I will tell you in this article which varieties I chose for planting and which varieties are the most popular among summer residents. I will provide a photo and description, and my review of the cultivation.

Is it possible to grow cherry tomatoes in open ground in Siberia?

I live in a risky farming zone - in Siberia, and I grow tomatoes in open ground. And this leaves its mark on the nature of their cultivation.

Of course, large-fruited, fleshy tomatoes are good. But in open ground, and even in unfavorable summer conditions, they very often do not show all their qualities. One good first bunch will form with several large fruits, on the second the fruits are no longer so large, and they are smaller in size, and that’s all.

Therefore, for some time now I began to grow cherry tomatoes and am very pleased with the result.

Cherry tomatoes include varieties of tomatoes whose fruit weight does not exceed 25 g. These are very tasty tomatoes, suitable for salads, pickling, whole-fruit canning, and especially for table decoration.

Tips for growing cherry tomatoes

In Siberian conditions, seeds for seedlings begin to be sown in late March - early April. The timing is chosen so that seedlings are planted in open ground no earlier than the beginning of June at the age of 60-65 days. Can be planted in a greenhouse in April-May.

  • Planted at a depth of approx. 1 cm, dive when a pair of true leaves appear.
  • If fertilizers are needed, 2-3 fertilizing with a complex mineral composition is allowed.
  • A week before planting in the ground, the seedlings need to be hardened off - taken out to the balcony during the day.

By the time of planting, seedlings should have 6-7 true leaves and at least 1 flower cluster

It is recommended to plant plants according to the scheme: 30x50 cm.

Hybrid cherry tomatoes

I noticed that cherry tomatoes, unlike large-fruited tomatoes, even in open ground form several clusters, and on each cluster beautiful, neat tomatoes hang. Moreover, now there are many wonderful hybrids of the so-called cocktail type with fruits that are not so small - weighing up to 70 g.

These wonderful tomatoes are great for salads and preparations. And fresh, these tomatoes are simply amazing! I especially liked three hybrids:

  • Raspberry Farmer F1
  • Children's sweets F1
  • Honey candy F1

Raspberry Farmer F1

This medium-early ripening hybrid, determinate type, forms low bushes up to 70 cm. I formed it into 3-4 stems, and they bore many clusters with fruits weighing up to 60 g. The tomatoes are round, red-crimson in color.

The description of the variety states resistance to temperature changes, which is very important when growing in our climate and in open ground. In general, these tomatoes pleased me with their yield and sweet taste.

They grew well in the beds until the frost.

Children's sweets F1

The plants in the soil grew quite tall and formed up to 6 stems per shoot - but I left 2 stems per plant. The fruits of Children's sweet F1 weigh up to 50–70 g, are round, yellow and red. Very tasty, sweet, with a high content of sugar and vitamins.

Honey candy F1

Determinate, the height of plants in open ground is no more than 80 cm. I pinched and tied up the plants. Many clusters were formed, abundantly hung with medium-sized (30–40 g) oval-shaped, yellow fruits. They turned out to be very sweet. The variety is resistant to diseases and hardy in our difficult climate. I will definitely continue to grow these hybrids!

Also from hybrid cherry tomatoes we can recommend:

  • Cherry Blossam F1,
  • 6 Punto 7 F1
  • Sweet fountain F1,
  • Keraso F1.

hybrids of the Dutch selection series

Varietal cherry tomatoes

Cherry tomatoes are very loved by housewives and popular among summer residents. They are sweet, dessert, and will perfectly decorate any dish on the holiday table.

The choice of varieties is worthy of the author’s, Siberian, and foreign selection. All of them do not exceed a mass of 25 g, and some are even striking in their miniature size of 5-7 g.

The following varieties can be grown in open ground:

  • Valentine,
  • The necklace is red and yellow,
  • Naughty,
  • Cherry cocktail,
  • Pomisolka,
  • Pomegranate drop,
  • Black cherry, etc.

cherry varieties Pomegranate Drop and Black Cherry

Red necklace

Ripens on average in 115-117 days from emergence. The bush grows quite powerful up to 1.5 m in height.

The fruits are very attractive. Tomatoes ripen in impressive trusses. They are shaped like cherries (and definitely “cherries”). The color of ripe fruits is bright red, and the weight does not reach 10 g.

These “cuttings” simply melt in your mouth; the manufacturer promises a high content of vitamin C and dry matter. They will decorate any pickled dish and assorted vegetables, if they are not eaten right there on the bush.

The most remarkable thing, in my opinion, is that the fruits are stored for up to 1.5 -2 months. To do this, they need to be collected not individually, but in whole tassels and placed in boxes so that they do not wrinkle.

Red necklace

Necklace yellow

This is the sibling of the Red Necklace. All characteristics are the same, with the exception of the color of the fruit. They are a cheerful bright yellow and taste a little different, like all yellow-colored tomatoes.

Fruits weighing 5-7 g give a yield of up to 3.5 kg with 1 m kV

Necklace yellow

Naughty

A successful variety of Siberian selection (SibNIIRS). Can be grown in open ground and under temporary film covers.

The plant is tall, so it will need support, and the bush itself, which grows up to 1.8 m, will need to be regularly shaped and pinched.

Begins to ripen within 100 days from emergence. The “cuttings” ripen with a beautiful crimson color and an unusual obovate, as breeders say, shape. The fruits weighing 11 g are very tasty, medium-dense, shiny.

The variety is quite productive, it allows you to harvest up to 4.5 kg from 1 m kV, if you use film shelters.

Features of cultivation

Despite the external “exotic” appearance, the agricultural technology of Candy Sweet Icicles tomatoes is standard. Requirements for the landing site are the same.

Important! Suitable predecessors in the garden for these tomatoes are cucumbers, onions, garlic, root vegetables, and any herbs.

Hardening off seedlings before planting helps them quickly adapt to a new location.

The recommended method of growing them is seedlings. It takes about two months to form seedlings suitable for planting in the garden. At this point they have 4-6 true leaves and reach a height of 15-18 cm.

Thanks to the small size of the plants, you can place six tomato bushes Candies Sweet Icicles per 1 m². The scheme does not change regardless of whether they are planted in open or closed ground. You will definitely need support - the stems and emerging brushes need garter.

Watering tomatoes Candy Sweet icicles requires moderate watering. They cannot tolerate constant waterlogging of the soil. Root rot develops quickly and plants die. In a greenhouse, tomatoes are watered once every 3-4 days, spending 8-10 liters of water per bush. In hot weather, the intervals are reduced to two days, sometimes even daily watering is required. In open ground, the frequency and intensity of precipitation are taken into account.

Watering is combined with loosening and weeding, but you can avoid these activities by immediately filling the bed with mulch

Important! Excess moisture is especially harmful for tomatoes Candy Sweet icicles after the formation of fruit ovaries. When ripening tomatoes are regularly overwatered, they become “watery” and lose their richness of flavor.

Due to the high productivity, the soil in the garden bed where it is planned to plant Candy Sweet Icicles tomatoes must be fertilized beforehand. Plants prefer a nutritious, but loose substrate. When digging the soil, humus (8-10 l/m²) and complex nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizer (50-70 g/m²) are added.

Tomatoes planted in the ground are fed three times:

  • 10-12 days after transplanting to the garden bed;
  • immediately after flowering (at the moment of formation of fruit ovaries);
  • after harvesting the first tomatoes.

For the first time, it is recommended to use a solution of mineral nitrogen fertilizers, then use complex store-bought fertilizers designed specifically for tomatoes.

To achieve maximum productivity, it is recommended to form Candy Sweet Icicles tomato bushes into 2-3 stems. In addition to the main one, 1-2 more shoots are left from the most powerful and developed stepsons. Others should be removed as needed, approximately once every 10-15 days.

Tips for growing and caring

The easiest way to grow tomatoes is to sow a large number of seeds in boxes. The seeds are soaked in a solution of potassium permanganate to make them swell. The soil is spilled and shallow grooves are made. Seeds are poured into the grooves, a little soil is placed on top and the soil is moistened. Cover the boxes with film. The ambient temperature must be at least 20 degrees.

Seedlings usually grow within 2 weeks. The seedlings are watered with warm water 2-3 times a week. For best results, boxes with seedlings are placed on the windowsill. It will be good if you put the boxes on a stand and then on the window. This will give the roots more access to oxygen. The boxes are turned over from one side to the other twice a week. In this case, the seedlings will not stretch.

It’s better to wait with feeding for now. The fact is that the embryos must develop immunity on their own. In addition, all additives have a strong effect, and the sensitive roots of the plant will not be able to survive this and will die.

When the tomato sprout is in the second leaf phase, the seedlings need to be pricked. They dive into pots or containers with a diameter of no more than 10 centimeters. For replanting, prepare the appropriate soil: it should contain sand, rotted compost and peat.

Picking has a beneficial effect on tomatoes. Their roots grow and branch faster and better. However, the bushes themselves freeze in size for several days.

After picking, plants need rest and regular care. In a few weeks, the tomatoes will grow to 30-40 centimeters in height. At this time, the soil in the greenhouse or garden is already prepared in advance. To prepare, add compost, peat, and stove ash to the soil and level the fertilizer over the surface. It is better to prepare the soil in the fall, so the fertilizers will be distributed more quickly in the soil. Depressions about 10 centimeters long are made in the ground. A tomato is immersed in the hole and covered with earth. You need to dig in so that the leaves and trunk of the plant are on the surface, and only the roots are in the ground.

During the period of active growth, tomatoes need additional nutrition. Since the plant feeds from the ground, mineral supplements containing phosphorus and potassium are introduced into the soil. These substances have a positive effect on the growth of tomatoes and will help achieve high yields.

New shoots emerge from the trunk of the plant. They are called stepchildren. Stepchildren are usually located between the trunk and the leaf. The branches must be removed immediately, otherwise the tomatoes will appear late, and some of the taste and juice will be lost. The procedure is carried out in the morning. Cut the stepson with scissors or a knife. The cut site on the stem is treated with a solution of potassium permanganate. Usually tomatoes react normally to pinching, because this procedure is quite safe for them.

During flowering and in hot weather, tomatoes are watered more often and in large quantities. However, each time before watering, you should assess the condition of the soil. If the soil is still damp from last time, there is no need to water. At high humidity, the risk of rot development increases significantly. If the weather is rainy, then they refrain from watering altogether and wait until normal weather sets in.

Tomatoes set quickly enough on the bushes. By mid-summer, when grown in greenhouses, red fruits are already formed. The fruits are picked with the stalk. Ripe tomatoes are stored well and do not rot. However, there is no need to delay preparing or eating tomatoes. It is advisable to use tomatoes within a week after harvesting.

Advantages and disadvantages

  • small and neat fruits with a sweet taste;
  • small height of the tomato bush;
  • possibility of outdoor cultivation;
  • bountiful harvest;

No defects were identified during cultivation. All gardeners who planted Candy Sweet Icicles were satisfied with the result.

Pest and disease control

Tomatoes Candies Sweet icicles have good immunity. The experience of gardeners shows that with proper agricultural technology, they are practically not affected by fungal diseases typical of the crop and do not suffer from pest attacks.

However, for prevention, before planting, you can etch tomato seeds Candy Sweet icicles in a solution of any fungicide for 15-20 minutes. Treatments with the same preparations (of the bushes themselves and the soil in the garden bed) once every 10-15 days are recommended if cool, rainy weather, which promotes the activation of pathogenic microflora, persists for a long time.

The concentration of the working solution and the frequency of treating tomatoes with fungicides are indicated in the instructions of the drug manufacturer

Any universal insecticides or insectoacaricides are used against pests (if they are noticed on “neighboring” tomato bushes or during seasons of their “mass” invasion).

Important! When there is less than a month left before harvest, tomatoes Candy Sweet icicles can only be treated with preparations of biological origin.
