Piston seed planter

It is a plastic cylindrical container into which seed material is poured. At the bottom of the device there is a cone-shaped adjustable hole through which the seeds are poured into the ground. At the top there is a spring piston. The principle of operation is to squeeze out a certain number of seeds into previously prepared grooves or holes. To prevent the seeds from scattering, the planter is kept at a height of about 5 cm.

Some gardeners prefer to use a medical syringe instead of a mini-planter, since the principle of operation is the same. Injection has its disadvantages:

when shaking, large scattering of seeds is possible;
it is impossible to press the piston with the same force, which leads to different amounts of squeezed out seeds and uneven germination.

Manual on wheels

A manual seeder has many positive qualities:

This technical device is easy to use.
You don't need to buy fuel for it.
Mechanical failure is easy to fix.

During sowing, effort will be required to move the manual device around the garden; the remaining actions are performed automatically, as in the case of constructing a seeder from a walk-behind tractor. Therefore, this option is suitable for vegetable gardens of less than 10–20 acres; it will be quite difficult to sow a large area.

Despite the presence of a coulter cutting the ground, garlic must be planted in plowed black soil. The soil should be loose enough to ensure optimal conditions for fruit growth during planting.

Planters make sowing garlic easier

You will need the following materials:

1. Container for garlic with a double bottom. Using the holes in it, the flow of seeds outward will be regulated.

2. Brushes attached to the shaft, facilitating the measured release of cloves from the container.

3. One or two wheels. Their exact number depends on what design of the seeder is chosen.

4. A coulter, which will determine the depth of planting the seeds.

5. Handles, thanks to which the efforts were distributed throughout the unit.

Landing marker

The design resembles a wooden rake with large, non-triangular teeth. This type of device is the easiest to make. It is easier for them to distribute the garlic throughout the beds rather than using furrows. The marker does not ensure that the seeds fall into the ground, but it regulates the depth and distance between the holes, which can be easily controlled. These parameters will affect the yield and quality of the product.

Device for staggered landing

I would like to tell you about another device that will make the process of planting garlic easier. This planting device is easy to make with your own hands. You need to take a square wooden board measuring one meter by one meter. Pins of different lengths are installed on it. To do this, use special slats, install pins 6 cm long on one, and 13 cm long on the second.

When using such a device, there is no need to make holes manually. Planting will be carried out at the same depth. One click on the structure and a whole series of holes for landing is ready. With this planting, germination is 100%.

Seeders for equipment

In medium areas, a garlic seeder attached to a walk-behind tractor is required. The device has a similar structure, but it is driven by a walk-behind tractor. The camshaft controls the speed and pitch.

The main thing is to meet deadlines

If the planting time is determined incorrectly and the crop is planted ahead of time, then there is a risk of cloves sprouting, but if, on the contrary, it is planted too late, then they simply will not have time to take root and will freeze. Therefore, planting begins right from mid-September until the beginning of December. For example, in Siberia and the Urals, the most optimal time for planting garlic is mid-September and early October. In central Russia they start planting from the end of September to mid-October, but in the southern region they plant from the end of October and throughout November.

achieve the required planting depth.

To produce the simplest agricultural seeder, a hole needs to be made in the center of the prepared container for the material. There is a small hole in the lid for garlic or onion sets. Use a tin can lid to make a small valve for the cut hole. You can use other available material.

Insert a small piece of plastic pipe into the central hole. Insert a metal pipe into this pipe. Place a bolt and nut in it and secure it on both sides with washers for free rotation. Screw a handle (wooden or plastic) to the seed container. Attach the opener to the handle. You can use a slightly bent hoe.

Some gardeners equip the planter with compaction wheels. They can be made from plastic wheels from a toy car. You can use a seeder from a tractor; it is driven by a bicycle chain. The seeding container can be made with a double bottom by inserting a movable metal plate into it. This will help to ensure uniform planting of the crop and control the sowing density of the area.

How to make a seeder?

a transparent plastic jar (will be a container for seeds);
bolt;
plastic tube (you will need to cut a piece that fits the depth of the jar);
a metal tube slightly narrower in diameter;
2 washers for fixing the can;

a tin can (you can just use a lid);

wooden handle;

The hole must be located exactly in the center - this is important for the stability of the structure. Remove the cover. Make a triangle-shaped hole on the side (for seeds). Cut the lid from a tin can

This will be the valve that regulates the filling of seeds. The valve must be attached to the jar with wire so that it can open and close freely. Cut a piece of plastic pipe and insert it into the center of the jar. This way the can will not shrink as the bolt is tightened. You need to insert a metal tube into a piece of plastic pipe - this will create a bearing. As a result, the can should rotate - this is a sign that the design is working correctly. A bolt is in turn inserted into the metal pipe. You need to tighten it with a nut between two washers - this will make rotation free. Make 2 holes on the side of the plastic jar with a hot nail. In this case, the diameter of the nail will be the same as that of the garlic clove that will be planted. Drill a hole in a wooden handle for a bolt and screw it to the tank (can). Bend the hoe and attach it with wire to the handle, above the tank.

Manual seeder

The simplest type of garlic seeder is the manual one. To make steering easier, 1 or 2 wheels are additionally installed. Using a two-wheeled version is more effective, since the stability of the device increases.

A manual garlic seeder is effective in small areas. Its advantages are simplicity of design, ease of use and control, as well as maneuverability. It is rational to use it in gardens with poor traffic.

The downside is low productivity. Also, manual garlic seeders do not work well on heavy soils.
