How to grow thyme from seeds and cuttings at home in a pot, caring for the plant on the windowsill

Thyme (thyme) is one of the most unpretentious herbs successfully cultivated at home. Almost all of its species are perennial fragrant low-growing subshrubs. Many of them are widely used for medicinal purposes, in cooking as a spice and as ornamental plants in gardening.

The most famous among them are common thyme (distinguished by erect stems) and creeping thyme (popular name - Bogorodskaya grass). Let's look at the nuances of growing seasoning in an apartment.

Uses of thyme

Thyme is used both in cooking and in folk medicine.

To maximize the extraction of aroma and taste, it is best to use fresh young branches; simply cutting off the required amount with scissors, they will quickly grow back. Thyme is great for preparing various meat and fish dishes, and is very good for poultry and game. In dried form, it is added to minced meat for cutlets and sausage. Thyme is indispensable when preparing dishes with a high fat content, since the substances contained in the plant contribute to better digestion of heavy foods. Thyme is very good for smoking meat and fish. It goes well with potatoes, cabbage and fried mushrooms. Sun-dried tomatoes are very tasty with it. And among fishermen there is a belief that fumigating fishing gear with thyme ensures a successful catch. Thyme is also a good moth repellent; just place sprigs between layers of clothing in the closet.

This wonderful herb is very widely used in folk medicine. The aromatic smoke of thyme was used during religious services in Ancient Greece. In Rus', during the celebration of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, icons of the Mother of God were decorated with thyme. Thyme is considered a symbol of fertility and fertility, so brides wore thyme wreaths. It was used as various amulets and placed in amulet, as it protects against the evil eye, damage and evil spirits.

This is an excellent antiseptic, bactericidal, antihypertensive, diaphoretic, it has a pronounced sedative, analgesic, wound healing, anticonvulsant, and diuretic effect. It is used in the treatment of neuralgia and neuritis, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and genitourinary system. Due to the presence of essential oils, thyme is widely used in the treatment of respiratory diseases and colds. Without pre-treatment, fresh thyme is used to treat wounds, ulcers, and skin diseases. To do this, cut soft branches must be crushed and applied to the affected areas of the skin. In a similar way, it is used to reduce swelling, pain and itching after insect bites - bees, wasps, gadflies and others. Avicenna wrote about this use of thyme.

The easiest way to brew thyme is to put 1 tablespoon of dried herb in a glass and pour boiling water over it, let it brew for 30 minutes, your wonderful tea is ready. It is drunk for diseases of the respiratory tract, bronchi and lungs, for neuralgia, neuroses, insomnia, inflammation of the kidneys and bladder, as a diuretic and tonic.

To treat respiratory diseases, in addition to ingesting infusions or decoctions, inhalations are used. The simplest option is to pour boiling water over the thyme and breathe in the steam. But it is better to use thyme essential oil for this, especially if you have a home inhaler. When you have a runny nose, rinse your nose with a decoction of thyme, and when you have a sore throat, use it as a gargle.

Thyme is not recommended during pregnancy, with stomach and duodenal ulcers, and with arrhythmia.

Rosemary didn't work for me either. And thyme is easier from seeds. Longer, but easier. Apart from thyme, there is nothing spicy on the saucer. Everything else is dried. Your own or purchased. I don’t really like dried thyme as a seasoning; it tastes better fresh. But dried tea is better for cough tea.

What a nice bush! Do you grow any other herbs at home?

I planted rosemary and thyme from cuttings and read that it is easier than from seeds. True, only one sprig of thyme survived, but I’m not much of a gardener.

Yes, in gardening. Check the expiration date, the fresher the better. It rises very slowly.

Varvara, thanks for the article! My daughter and I really love tea with thyme. We bring it from Khakassia, but during the winter, of course, it runs out. I didn’t even think that you could grow it on a windowsill.
