Potato Orchid - variety description, photos, reviews, planting and care

Diseases and pests

All descriptions indicate the outstanding resistance of the Vega potato variety to major crop diseases. Late blight Vega is rarely affected due to its early ripening. The merit of the breeders is high resistance to nematodes, cancer, blackleg, and average resistance to scab and mosaic. This does not cancel preventive treatments, especially in fields and beds where crop rotation is not observed.

Vega is a promising, productive German potato variety of early ripening. On an industrial scale, it is recommended to grow it in the middle zone. Amateurs plant even on the border of the potato cultivation zone - Vega contains the same amount of starch as mid-season varieties, which makes it one of the most delicious in the group.

Dutch potato varieties

Holland, being a country with a cool climate, ranks first in the production of planting material, both potatoes and other vegetables. They supply their developments for growing high-yielding potatoes to markets in 70 countries around the world.

On Russian lands, many potato varieties from Holland have taken root well and are producing record yields. The varieties described above that are grown by Russian gardeners are “Red Scarlett”, “Impala”. There are other varieties that grow ideally in the Russian climate.

Early Zhukovsky (Russia)

The tubers of this variety are pink, oval, leveled, large (there are practically no small ones), with a smooth skin. It has good keeping quality, is tasty, and does not darken when cut. Contains starch – up to 15%. Lightly boiled, taste quality is medium to good. Has little waste during storage. Resistant against potato nematode and cancer.

We invite you to familiarize yourself with the Bluest spruce variety

Weak resistance against late blight. Does not tolerate waterlogging or dense soil due to possible suffocation of tubers. Of the domestic varieties, this is the earliest and one of the most productive. It is drought-resistant, but in hot, dry climates it quickly degenerates within 2-3 years, and its yield in the Kuban quickly decreases. Value: stable high yield, plasticity, early commercial production. He is not afraid of the potato nematode. Recommended for all regions except Northern and East Siberian.

These potatoes belong to the group of “pink varieties”. The culture is resistant to most diseases: late blight, scab and others, and also has little waste during storage. The tubers are oval in shape, the skin is smooth, and the flesh does not darken when cut.

The main advantage of early Zhukovsky is its taste, and there is virtually no waste when peeling. Let us dwell in more detail on the description of the variety.

The bush of the crop is small, semi-spreading. There are few stems, but they have many branches. The leaves are very dissected, large, dark green in color, slightly pubescent with clearly visible veins. The culture does not bloom for long, but en masse. The inflorescence has many compactly arranged flowers. The corolla of the flower is red-violet and has white stripes at the tips. There is no fruit after the flower.

The skin of the tubers is smooth, the tubers themselves have the shape of an oval, which ends with a blunt tip. It is impossible to accurately determine the color of the tubers of the crop; it may be red or have a pink tint. There are few eyes on the tubers; they are usually small. When the potato is cut, the flesh does not darken and is white.

The maximum yield of the variety is 38 tons per hectare, the tuber weight reaches 170 grams, starch - up to 15%. Early Zhukovsky is well stored, its indicators are 92-96%. In addition, the tubers are not afraid of mechanical damage, resulting in 90% high-quality potatoes. It should be noted that this variety is resistant to nematodes and cancer.

A medium-sized corolla forms on top of the bush, blooming with white flowers. Jelly potatoes have a growing season of 90 days, but when using nitrogen fertilizers it can increase, so fertilizing should be done with magnesium.

The tubers are smooth, oval in shape, medium in size with small eyes. Their skin is yellow and may be a little rough, but more often it is smooth. The dark yellow flesh has an excellent taste. The starch content is approximately 17%.

The yield is consistently good (one might even say very high) - 15 pieces per bush, with the weight of one potato ranging from 84 to 135 grams, there are practically no small ones. Approximately 45-60 tons per hectare are collected, so it is perfect for growing on an industrial scale.

The level of marketability of tubers (95%) and normal keeping quality (86%) also contribute to their popularity for large-scale production.

The peculiarity of this variety is that throughout the entire storage period the potatoes do not change their characteristics: appearance and taste.

MINI TUBERS - obtained from virus-free microplants in protected soil or in hydroponic modules, the healthiest, pure planting material of excellent varieties.

How to choose the right seed potatoes

When choosing seed potatoes, you need to carefully consider the appearance of the tuber. The correct potatoes should look like this:

  • The tuber should be the size of a chicken egg, but you can take it a little larger.
  • There should be no damage.
  • Potato seeds must be disease-free.
  • Potatoes that have already sprouted are allowed to be planted. This will help him ascend faster.

It is also worth correctly calculating the number of seeds. It is customary to take about 20-30 kg per one hundred square meters of land. If the potatoes are too large, then divide them in half before planting. So, if you have sorted out the quantity, it is worth considering all the most famous varieties, their features and characteristics.

Potatoes from seeds. we plant mini tubers. season 2022 part 2

Potatoes in boxes under straw The main problem that needed to be solved in 2022 was the lack of space for planting mini-tubers. The main planting potatoes took their place in the boxes. In the territories “annexed” to the site, I planted the old “Adretta” (as always, for the last time!))).

“Adretta” behind the plot Divided the mini-tubers into 3 parts according to the size of the potatoes, and had difficulty finding places for them. 2 places next to “Adretta”, and the third was artificially poured near an apple tree and 2 gooseberry bushes next to the bathhouse. We have long wanted to add soil in this place. She started hauling the land herself in a wheelbarrow from the little forest where she was looking for potatoes; he and my neighbor always help us out.

My husband looked at my activity and took matters into his own hands. But then I realized that I needed somewhere to put the Romanesco cabbage and the early Savoy Nyusha. It seems like they were dividing the seedlings, but there were still a lot left. As a result, I “attached” cabbages, and between them the smallest potato tubers from last year’s seeds. And Romanesco, and potatoes, and Savoy

I thought that we would eat the cabbage before the “rich” potato harvest was harvested... I thought in vain. “Romanesco” began to turn into “banana” thickets.

Everything has started to grow. There is a lowland here, and it is necessary to raise it, but the hands, as they say, “didn’t reach it.” Behind the “cucumber finder” is a semicircular bed with “Romanesco”, “Nyusha” and the potatoes being tested.

The next part of my story about how I grew potatoes from seeds could well be titled: “The potatoes are tasty, shelf-stable, productive.” A well-stored, disease-resistant, rich harvest is very suitable for fattening animals and for commercial purposes, for the market, in our opinion. On one of the farming sites I came across a heated discussion of varieties; they recommend, without hiding, some varieties for themselves, and others for sale.

Potatoes from seeds 2022

March 2022 has arrived. I begin to prepare the potatoes for planting: I take them out of the basement, lay them out in one layer in small plastic boxes with holes (usually such boxes are used for transporting champignons, as well as greens). There are also large, strong ones in hardware stores, but the light penetrates better through the former.

Features of cultivation and care

Potatoes are heat- and light-loving, relatively drought-resistant, and responsive to mineral supplements. This determines the crop’s requirements for cultivation:

  • rich in organic matter, highly permeable to water and air, warm soil with a slightly acidic or neutral reaction;
  • the bed should be well lit throughout the day;
  • the crop needs increased doses of potassium, moderate doses of nitrogen, phosphorus (the crop takes little of them out of the soil).

We invite you to familiarize yourself with Tomato temptation characteristics and description of the variety

Doesn't like potatoes:

  • fresh manure;
  • excess nitrogen - this leads to scab, even in the Vega variety;
  • chlorine-containing fertilizers;
  • shading;
  • frequent watering or rainy weather, especially after flowering, during the ripening period of tubers;
  • thickened plantings;
  • long-term cold snap.

Caring for potatoes is as follows:

  1. Watering. The crop is quite drought-resistant, but the Vega variety is demanding on soil moisture, especially during the period of formation and opening of buds. In dry, hot summers, it is better to water potatoes once or twice, but very generously. Moreover, it is not recommended to wet the tops. It is better to place the hose between the rows and let the moisture saturate the ground. 14 days before the expected harvest, watering is stopped completely. The planting is covered with cellophane to protect from rain. If this is not done, the safety and shelf life of the tubers will decrease.
  2. Feeding. It's important not to overdo it here. In addition to the fact that excess nitrogen sharply increases the likelihood of scab infection (excess calcium will also lead to this), nitrates cause rapid growth of the above-ground part to the detriment of the formation of tubers.
  3. Hilling is carried out at least twice. The first time is when the tops reach a height of 10-20 cm, the second time – after 2 weeks.
  4. Loosening row spacing. Actually, according to the rules of agricultural technology, it is enough to carry out the operation twice. But if you peel a bed of early potatoes 4-5 times, the wireworm will not disturb the crop.

Digging is done when dry weather sets in, most of the stems will dry out, and the potato skin will no longer peel off the pulp, even if it is rubbed intensely and harshly. The harvest is left in the garden for several hours, then moved under a canopy.

Romano (Holland)

Red tuber potatoes with excellent taste and good shelf life during winter storage. In terms of early maturity, Romano lags behind Cleopatra (two weeks), so it is not suitable for early harvest. It can only be used for winter storage. The tuber has a short oval shape, pink skin, light cream flesh, medium-depth eyes, weight 70–80 g.

Starch content 10–13%. Resistant against cancer, relatively resistant to mosaic viruses, moderately resistant to late blight, rhizoctonia, leaf curl virus, susceptible to common scab. Value: good uniformity of tubers, good taste. Disadvantages: rapid degeneration in rainfed conditions (non-irrigated lands), as well as with poor agricultural technology. Recommended for potato growers of the Central, Volga-Vyatka, Central Black Earth, and Far Eastern regions.

Description of early varieties

Of all 4,000 potato varieties, early-ripening crops are distinguished by ease of care, high yield and good taste.

Orchid

The variety was bred by Belarusian breeders.

The plant is tall with an erect stem covered with medium-sized bright green leaves. The flowers are white, collected in small inflorescences. The ripening period of tubers is 70–90 days.

The yield is high: 8–12 round tubers with small eyes ripen on 1 bush. The average weight of the vegetable is 150 g. The pulp is yellow, contains 16.6–21.5% starch, which gives good digestibility and excellent taste. Potatoes do not darken during heat treatment and slicing. Provided storage conditions are met, it has good shelf life.

The variety is resistant to nematodes, blackleg, wet rot, and is susceptible to scab and late blight of tubers and tops.

Suitable for cultivation in the Middle Volga, Central, Central Black Earth regions.

Potato varieties from Belarus

The potato varieties used in Belarus can be grown in both Ukraine and Russia. Since ancient times, Belarus has been famous for potato growing due to favorable climatic conditions.

Thanks to the breeders of the Potato Research Institute, numerous varieties were developed that were distributed throughout the world. In the vastness of the country, the previously described varieties - “Zhuravinka”, “Breeze” - have taken root well. There are other varieties that yield well in Russia.

The most common varieties include the variety "Skarb". Translated from the Belarusian language, this word means “wealth”. This name suits this variety of potato, because when dug up, the tubers look like gold nuggets. They are yellow in color and oval in shape.

Characteristics of potato varieties

It is difficult for a person, faced with such a variety of potato varieties, to independently choose which of them are intended for consumption and which will be used to feed livestock. For easier investigation, a characteristic of the variety is required.

Types of root vegetables by use:

  • Dining rooms. These are more popular types with excellent taste. It is because of their taste that they are used for cooking.
  • Technical. These varieties have a reduced protein content, as a result of which they are used for the production of starch and alcohol.
  • Feed. They are used to prepare feed for farm animals. They differ in that the content of protein and starch in them greatly exceeds the norm.
  • Universal. They contain everything you need to use them for any application.

Potato varieties are divided into groups according to ripening time. Different varieties according to ripening period are divided as follows:

  • Early - fruit ripening occurs on days 50-65.
  • Mid-early - ripening occurs after 65-85 days.
  • Mid-season - readiness occurs at 85-95 days.
  • Medium late - root crops ripen after 95-110 days.
  • Late potato varieties - root vegetables can be consumed after 95 or even more days.

Based on these characteristics, you should choose the appropriate variety for your climatic conditions and soil. To find out which types of potatoes are tastier and more productive, you need to familiarize yourself with their individual characteristics.

List of the most productive potato varieties

To get a good harvest, you need to choose the right potato variety.
It is important to take into account the timing of ripening, resistance to diseases, pest invasions and mechanical damage. It is also important how crops tolerate adverse weather factors, in particular drought, high humidity and sub-zero temperatures. Varieties that develop well in the southern regions may be completely unsuitable for gardeners in northern latitudes. Much depends on the purpose of a particular variety. For example, there are special types of potatoes with decorative properties for further sale. Potatoes in our country are divided into four varieties. This is early, ripening from 60 to 80 days, medium - 80-90 days, mid-ripening - 90-110, late-ripening - 110-120.

Tubers form the fastest in early varieties, and accordingly, the harvest appears faster. But this type of potato does not keep well. That’s why it needs to be grown in small quantities and immediately cooked after digging.

There are 3 varieties of early potatoes.

The yield is up to 470 kg per hundred square meters. Ripening time varies from 70 to 75 days.

The fruits are light and round, weighing from 100 to 140 g. The variety has a good taste.

Its yield is 350 kg per hundred square meters. Ripens in 80 to 90 days. According to the description, it feels best on light and enriched soils.

Forms 16 tubers per bush. The fruits are tasty and round in shape. The weight of one potato reaches up to 100 g.

Productivity - up to 190 kg per hundred square meters. Ripens in 70 days. The tubers are oval-shaped, white in color, tasty.

Weight varies from 90 to 140 g per piece. This species tolerates drought well. It is undemanding to soil.

These types of potatoes have a longer growing season. But at the same time, their tubers are tastier and the yield is higher. They can be stored until next spring without loss of quality. The most popular of them:

IrbitskyProductivity is up to 400 kg. Ripens in 70-90 days. It is unpretentious in cultivation. Tastes great. The tubers are large, reddish, weighing 190 g.
BreezeUp to 600 kg per bush. Tubers are oval, yellow. Weight reaches 120 g. Unpretentious in cultivation
ManifestoOn average it gives 350 kg, the maximum can reach 730 kg. Ripens in 90 to 110 days. On light and enriched soils it produces the most yield. The fruits are pink, their weight varies from 105 to 145 g

AuroraYields up to 410 kg per bush. It takes 80 to 85 days to mature. The plant is tall. The fruits are oblong, light brown in color. The weight of the piece reaches 130 g. It has good taste characteristics
AgathaMore than 250 kg per bush. It takes 50 to 55 days for the fruit to ripen. The variety is non-degenerate and can grow even on loam. The tubers are large, oval, light yellow in color. But the weight of one root crop ranges from 100 to 130 g.

LilyRefers to the products of Belarusian selection. Productivity can range from 400 to 760 kg depending on conditions. It takes 70 to 90 days to mature. The tubers are yellow, oval, weighing from 100 to 200 g. They are stored well. This species is characterized by drought resistance and thrives in all weather conditions.

Late varieties have a very long growing season, so they are not grown in most of Russia.

There are varieties that, in addition to excellent taste and good yield, are distinguished by their external attractiveness. The last characteristic is important for those who grow vegetables for sale - to obtain marketable tubers.

Originally from Holland. It is characterized by high productivity, yielding up to 400 kg per hundred square meters. The fruits have excellent taste. In the event of an attack by the Colorado potato beetle, it recovers quite quickly. This variety was able to adapt even to the harsh Siberian climate.
