Hello, dear friends - summer residents and gardeners! Today I want to tell you about rolled-up seedlings or, as they are also called, Moscow-style seedlings.

This year, many are trying to sow seeds in this way for the first time and ask questions about how long the seedlings need to be kept in the rolled-up fruit, when you can remove the bag that covers the glass, whether you need to add soil to the rolled-up paper, and so on.

Care after the first shoots appear

After sowing, we place a rolling bag over the container to create a greenhouse effect, which retains heat and creates a favorable environment for germinating seeds. Rolled glasses must be kept in the light, trying not to miss the beginning of the emergence of seedlings. A prerequisite for timely seed germination is maintaining an optimal temperature. For eggplants, peppers and tomatoes it is 25-28 ⁰C.

In a week (plus or minus a couple of days, depending on the crop sown, the temperature maintained and the quality of the seeds), shoots will begin to appear, and it will be possible to remove the film from the crops. If the shoots are still sporadic, simply tuck the bag, leaving a small gap for ventilation.

Rolled papers with sprouted seeds should be placed on a warm windowsill, making sure to place some insulating material under the container, for example, a piece of polystyrene foam. If you have a fluorescent lamp, install it to illuminate the seedlings. The temperature must be maintained at the same level: if the temperature is lowered after the first shoots appear, the remaining seeds may sit in the ground for too long or may not germinate at all.

As soon as massive seed germination begins, the bag should be removed completely and the seedlings should be placed in a bright place at room temperature for growing. If it is too hot and the lighting is insufficient, the seedlings will begin to stretch and thin out.

How to grow onion seedlings?

The landless cultivation method cannot be replaced for sowing onions. Seedlings are planted in a permanent place along with paper. But in order not to plant the crop permanently in frozen ground, you need to correctly calculate the sowing time. This will be approximately on April 8-15. Again, some sources refute this method for growing onion seedlings. But, as practice has shown, if the technology was correct, the Moscow method is well suited for both onions and small-seeded plants.

Hydration

It is very important to monitor the water level in the cup: it must reach the bottom layer of paper so that it is evenly saturated with moisture. Since seedlings in roll-up seedlings feed exclusively on water, they can only be kept in rolls after germination for two to three weeks.

When germinating seeds, I usually add one tablespoon of three percent hydrogen peroxide to half a liter of water to stimulate seed germination and enrich the water with oxygen. This way I convert tap water into an analogue of rain or melt water.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantages are:

  • without using soil for seedlings, and as a consequence there is no possibility of blackleg disease;
  • space saving;
  • simplicity of the technique.

The minimum requirements allow you to sow directly on the windowsill. Rolled rolls are very convenient to store in cups, several rolls in one.

For more heat-loving plants, this technique is suitable in the early stages of seedling development. Slow growth requires germination directly in the ground. Gardeners have to plant seedlings in pots after a short time and continue caring as usual. It's inconvenient, takes up more space, and is troublesome.

Picking time

Usually within two to three weeks the plants develop their first true leaf, and if you have the opportunity to pick up the seedlings in separate cups, do this, and if you have not yet prepared a place for seedlings, unroll the roll-up papers and add a thin layer of soil to them, then roll them up again, secure with an elastic band and place in some other container. You will get a so-called snail in which you can grow the seedlings for a few more weeks. However, then you will still need to separate them into separate cups.

If you sowed the rolled-up seeds late, at the end of March or early April, then by adding soil to the roll, you can hold the seedlings until they are transplanted into a greenhouse or open ground.

  • Pepper: growing from seeds in the garden

There is another option: add water-soluble fertilizer for seedlings based on humic acids to the water, that is, the drug is in a form that is easily accessible to plants. However, it is necessary to reduce the concentration of fertilizer several times so as not to burn the tender roots of the seedlings. Be sure to check the instructions for how long the prepared solution can be stored, and change it when it expires. This will support the seedlings without soil until picking.

Essence and features of the method

The principle of the sequence of operations is the same for all plants. Initially, paper and cellophane blanks are prepared. Regular toilet paper will do. Polyethylene film is cut along the width of the paper. The thickness of the film should be such that the package can stand on its own in the glass.

Technique:

  1. It is easier to mark according to paper sizes. The length of the segments is different, ranging from 30 to 50 cm. If there are a lot of seeds, then it is better to cut it shorter.
  2. A layer of paper is placed on the surface of the table. It should be wetted using a spray bottle or gently dripping in the center.
  3. Next, each seed is added at a distance of 2-3 cm from the top edge. The density is determined by the type of plant, on average it is four cm. It is not recommended to lay it very close - there will be no room for growth.
  4. A film is placed over the seeds, the edges should match. Then carefully roll it up. By the way, the thinner the paper and the more wet it is, the more likely it is to tear.

Attention!

To prevent the roll from unwinding, it must be tied without squeezing.

Several of these rolls are placed in a glass or other container 7-10 cm high. Water is poured to a third of the height of the glass. To create a greenhouse effect, the glass is placed in a plastic bag or covered with it. You should not completely block the access to oxygen; there must be a hole for ventilation.

After green shoots appear, mineral fertilizer is added to the water. The concentration of such irrigation is calculated from the amount of water in the glass, i.e. make him very weak.

During growth, you need to check the water level every few days. After a month, when leaves appear, fertilizing should be repeated.

After the germination time has passed, unfold the roll with the polyethylene base towards you, as it was originally laid. The paper has already become sour; care is required not to break off the sprouts. Each sprout is cut out separately with paper. If the steps are carried out accurately, weakly germinated seeds can be rolled up and placed back in a container with water. Ready sprouts are planted in the garden in the ground or in separate pots for further growth.

Picking seedlings from rolled-up paper

And now I want to introduce you to the very principle of picking seedlings from a rolled-up paper into a separate container. I'm going to pick the eggplants, whose first real leaves are already beginning to unfurl. I will put the eggplants into half-liter disposable cups. Before starting the procedure, I put 9 tablespoons of soil disinfected in the microwave into each glass.

How to sow eggplants on paper - step by step

My number one planted variety is Bibo – white eggplants. There were 10 seeds in the package, and they all sprouted. I make a depression in the soil with a used nail file, but you can use a pencil or pen for this. Using a pulling motion, I separate the seedling from the paper and place its root in the hole. If scraps of paper remain on the roots, plant the seedling with it: paper in the soil decomposes very quickly.

I pour water from a syringe into each hole so that it draws the roots of the seedling to a depth, then I fill the holes with soil and squeeze it around the stems. I bury tomato seedlings up to the cotyledon leaves so that they grow roots on the stem, but I plant eggplants and peppers not so deep.

Having picked the Bibo variety, I roll up the roll with the remaining seedlings in it and put it in place until it’s time to pick other varieties. This is another advantage of growing seedlings in rolls.

Growing seedlings without soil

What tricks gardeners are not capable of to get strong and healthy seedlings! For example, it was with their light hand that many ways to grow seedlings at home without soil were born: on toilet paper, in bottles and even plastic boxes.

Advantages of growing seedlings without soil

First, let's decide why we need to grow seedlings in such an unusual way. The fact is that quite often young sprouts that have just hatched from the ground become victims of the black leg. At a more advanced age, seedlings are no longer afraid of this scourge. The causative agent of the deadly disease lives in the soil and is quite difficult to get rid of. In the first stages of germination and development, plants have enough supply of nutrients contained in the seed and they do not need soil as such. Therefore, growing seedlings without soil allows you to achieve several goals at once: protect the sprouts from being damaged by the black leg, save space and immediately weed out weak and non-viable plants.

Growing seedlings without soil on toilet paper

Among the many possible variations, the most widespread is the method of growing seedlings without soil, called the “Moscow” method. It requires strips of polyethylene 10-15 cm wide, toilet paper and a cut plastic bottle. Growing seedlings occurs as follows: two layers of toilet paper are laid on strips of polyethylene, between which the seed is evenly distributed. It is necessary to place the seeds at a distance of 1-1.5 cm from the edge of the paper, maintaining gaps of at least 3-4 cm between them. After this, the “bed” is carefully and generously moistened with a spray bottle, and

then covered with another strip of polyethylene. The next and very important stage of sowing is rolling up the “bed” into a roll, which is then placed in a cut plastic bottle so that the seeds are on top. Water is poured into the bottom of the bottle (about 3-4 cm). After about 7-10 days, the first shoots begin to emerge from the roll, and after another 14 days, its top is covered with seedlings. This ends the landless phase of growing seedlings, since after the formation of two true leaves it must be urgently sent to a greenhouse for growing. To do this, carefully unroll the roll and transplant the strongest sprouts into a seedling box along with the remains of toilet paper.

Caring for seedlings after picking

After picking, the seedlings need to be kept for several days in a shaded place so that direct sunlight does not fall on them. If after 2-3 days the seedlings feel normal and are not lethargic, you can put them in a well-lit place.

As you can see, there is nothing complicated in the process of growing seedlings in Moscow and picking seedlings from rolled-up papers. I myself use this convenient method and recommend it to you.

The second simple way to grow seedlings from seeds

It is not always possible to find snow in winter, much less in spring.
Then seedlings from petunia seeds can be grown in the following way. In a wide bowl we make several through holes to drain water. We fill the bowl with soil for growing seedlings, not reaching the edges of the bowl 2 cm. We take a spray bottle and thoroughly spray the surface of the ground with water. We make small grooves in the ground no more than 0.3 mm deep. Sow petunia seeds in the furrows. This must be done very carefully, preferably armed with a magnifying glass and a lamp, because the seeds are so small that they are difficult to see even in daylight. Important: under no circumstances should we cover petunia seeds with soil!
Next, cover the bowl with a plastic bag and place the bowl in a warm place, ideally next to a central heating radiator. From time to time we check the condition of the future seedlings - ventilate, if necessary - moisturize. As a rule, on the 4-5th day with such sowing, the first sprouts of petunia begin to appear.

Planting seedlings in diapers

Planting seedlings in diapers is the optimal solution in cases where there is clearly not enough space on the window for growing.
In this case we are talking about the use of film for planting seeds. Let us immediately make a reservation that the method is unusual and was first tried by residents of Moscow. Which is not surprising, because in the capital, a square centimeter of free space is too expensive to clutter an apartment with containers of seedlings. Today’s article will discuss how to sow and plant plants in film. First, let's look at the features of the method, its strengths and weaknesses.
