As a rule, foreign varieties of fruit trees are not frequent guests in Russian gardens. But you need to get to know them, if only because they perform well in our climate. Take, for example, the American variety Nord Star, or North Star. This cherry was created in 1950 at the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station. Author unknown. But the parental line can be traced. Our heroine appeared as a result of crossing the ancient Western European variety Lotovaya (Lotovka, Morel Lotovaya, English Morel, Shadow Mo-real, Senchesta Morelle, Schattenmorelle) and a seedling that grew from the seed of an unknown cherry variety obtained in 1918 from Serbia. According to VNIISPK, our heroine was submitted for state testing in 1985. But at present it is not included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia. Nevertheless, the variety is quite famous in Belarus and Ukraine. In 1995, the variety was included in the State Register of Plants of Ukraine. In Russia, the southern regions and central regions of Russia are considered the most suitable for cultivating the Northern Star.
Description of Nord Star cherry
Nord Star cherry is a low-growing, compact tree. The crown is quite thick and wide, round in shape. The color of the bark of the trunk and branches is dark brown. The leaves are narrowly oval, small in size, shiny. The Nord Star cherry variety is adapted for cultivation in southern latitudes and central Russia.
Height and dimensions of an adult tree
The maximum active growth of a tree is observed at a young age. From the moment it enters the fruiting stage it becomes moderate. The height of the Nord Star cherry at the age of ten is 2.-2.5 m.
Young tree Nord Star
Description of fruits
Main characteristics of cherry fruits of the Nord Star variety:
- berry weight – 4-4.5 g;
- shape – round or wide-round;
- the skin is thin, shiny;
- color – dark red;
- pulp – reddish, delicate consistency, fibrous, juicy;
- taste – sweetish-sour, more sour;
- The bone is round and of medium size.
The tasting rating of cherries is 3.8-4 points. The detachment from the stalk is dry. The pulp is easily separated from the stone. When ripe, the berries do not fall off and do not bake in the sun. The density of the fruits is low, so they do not differ in good keeping quality and transportability.
Pollinators of the Nord Star cherry
Nord Star cherry (Star of the North) is a partially self-fertile variety, so the highest productivity is observed in collective plantings. Cherries such as Oblachinskaya, Nefris, and Meteor are ideal as pollinators. In terms of flowering time, the tree is classified as a medium flowering tree. Flowering begins in May.
Comment! In some sources, Northern Star cherries are characterized as a self-fertile crop, capable of forming a full-fledged harvest in single plantings. According to experts, the degree of self-fertility can be influenced by the climate and weather conditions of the place where the tree grows.
Spring cherry blossoms look very beautiful
Description
American sizes are small. At a young age, cherry growth is active, after entering the fruiting period it is moderate. The tree reaches a height of only 2.0 - 2.5 meters; it is decorated with a not very dense and compact crown of a round shape. The trunk and branches are covered with dark brown bark. The leaf blade is small, narrowly oval, 75x40 mm in size, with a coarsely serrated edge. The leaf is leathery, with a glossy surface. The Nord Star inflorescence consists of 3 - 4 small flowers. Their diameter is only 25 mm, saucer-shaped. The corolla is formed by touching, slightly corrugated broadly oval petals. The stigma of the pistil can be located above the anthers or below. The calyx of the flower is goblet-shaped; on the sunny side a strong tan appears. The peduncle is short - 20 mm, with bracts. The type of fruiting is mixed, the most productive are the branches of the first, second and third years.
Cherry berries are of medium size, weighing 4.0 grams, but not more than 4.5 grams, measuring 17.5 × 19.7 × 17.3 mm. The shape is from round to broadly round, the apex is round, the funnel is narrow, the ventral suture is slightly flat, not pronounced. The skin is thin, glossy, dark red in color. The pulp is red, delicate fibrous consistency, very juicy. The juice is red. The taste of the variety is satisfactory, the taste is sweet and sour, but for many it is still rather sour. Taster rating from 3.8 to 4 points. 100 grams of raw material contains: 13% dry matter, 9.2% sugars, 1.5% free acids, 16.0 mg ascorbic acid. The stone is medium, round, weighing 0.2 grams, measuring 7.0×6.0×6.0 mm. Makes up 5% of the total mass of the drupe. It separates from the pulp without difficulty. Pedicel 41 - 44 mm, with 1 or 2 non-deciduous bracts. The detachment from the berry is dry.
Main characteristics of Nord Star cherries
To get to know Nord Star cherries in detail, you need to study the main distinctive characteristics of the tree and the taste of the fruit.
Drought resistance, frost resistance
The variety is drought-resistant, so it can easily withstand prolonged sultry heat in the summer. It is characterized by high frost resistance. Belongs to winter hardiness zone 5, withstands frosts up to 32-40 ° C.
Attention! When growing Nord Star cherries in lowlands and waterlogged areas, young shoots of the tree may suffer from frost.
Productivity
The fruiting period of grafted trees begins 2-3 years after planting. Maximum fertility is observed from 4-5 years of age. The highest yields are possible when trees are grown in joint plantings with other cherry varieties. The average yield is 15-25 kg per 1 adult tree.
The variety is considered late ripening. The berries begin to ripen in July-August. The fruiting pattern of the Nord Star cherry is mixed. The formation of the main harvest occurs on 1-3 year old branches. The fruits are universally used – suitable for both fresh consumption and processing. But most often they are processed - canned compotes, jams, and dried fruits are made. Also, the fruits, flowers and leaves of Nord Star cherries can be used in folk medicine.
Comment! The fruiting time of Nord Star cherries can vary within a few weeks depending on the region in which they grow.
Advantages and disadvantages
Like other cherry varieties, Nord Star has certain advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages of North Star:
- high dessert qualities of fruits;
- small tree size;
- precociousness;
- high and stable yields;
- suitability for dense planting (the distance between trees can be 2 m);
- high degree of self-fertility;
- drought resistance;
- winter hardiness;
- is not afraid of return frosts due to late flowering;
- immunity to klyasterosporiosis and coccomycosis.
Ripe fruits are easily separated from the stalk, tearing is dry
Disadvantages of the variety:
- increased acidity of fruits;
- susceptibility to moniliosis.
Step-by-step planting instructions for beginners
The step-by-step planting process looks like this:
- When preparing a planting site, the upper and lower layers of soil from the pit are placed separately - the soil of the upper layer is mixed with fertilizer, without which the seedlings will not be able to develop sufficiently or take root. As a top dressing, you can use humus, superphosphate, wood ash or potassium chloride.
- The root system is inspected, damaged parts of which should be removed. If the root system is dry, the seedling is placed in water for 6 hours. It is also recommended to dip the roots in a solution of clay or manure immediately before planting.
- A peg is driven into the prepared hole, which is covered with the prepared mixture from the top layer, and then 10 cm with the bottom layer of soil.
- When planting a plant, you should take into account that 3–4 cm of the root collar should rise above the ground.
- The seedling is covered with the bottom layer of soil and carefully tied to a peg. The soil around is compacted a little, and a near-trunk hole is formed nearby. The young tree is watered with 2 buckets of water, and then the hole is mulched with sawdust.
Landing rules
In general, the process of planting Nord Star cherries does not have its own characteristics and is practically no different from other varieties of cherries. The main thing is to choose the right place to plant a tree, taking into account its varietal characteristics.
Recommended timing
Nord Star cherry seedlings can be rooted both in spring and autumn. The timing will depend on the climatic conditions of the region. In temperate climates, the optimal planting time would be mid-April. In the fall, it is extremely undesirable to plant seedlings in such regions, as there is a threat of them freezing in winter.
In southern latitudes, on the contrary, planting in the fall is quite possible, the main thing is to do it a month before the onset of the first frost. The most optimal period will be mid-October.
Site selection and soil preparation
Nord Star cherry prefers sunny areas. The variety is not afraid of drought, drafts and strong winds. But at the same time, he does not like close groundwater. There are no special requirements for the composition of the soil, the main thing is that it is fertile and well-moistened. It should be well prepared before planting. It is necessary to remove all weeds from the site, especially perennials.
Advice! The physical and chemical composition of the soil can be improved by plowing with compost or manure.
How to plant correctly
The seedlings are placed on an area according to the following pattern: 2x3 m. When growing Nord Star cherries on an industrial scale, you should adhere to the 3x4 m pattern. This placement will significantly improve the light conditions.
Preparing for landing
The selection of seedlings and the process of preparing them for planting are the main stages, the correct completion of which will ensure a rich and stable harvest in the future for many years.
That is why it is so important to understand the basic rules of this procedure and to provide in advance all the conditions for the healthy growth and development of the cherry tree in the garden.
Selecting the best seedlings for planting
Despite the fact that cherry seedlings are usually planted in the spring, many professionals advise purchasing them in the autumn due to the wide variety of planting material at this time of year.
When choosing the seedling itself, it is not recommended to take tall plants with a large number of shoots, since they already have quite developed rhizomes, which are difficult to dig up without damaging them. One-year-old seedlings would be an ideal option - their survival rate is much higher, and the price is much more favorable.
Important! To check the seedling for dryness, you can bend the root or shoot into a ring
-
they should bend easily, not crunch, and the bark in the bend area should gather like an accordion, but not peel off.
When examining the seedlings, it is worth noting the following factors:
- Finding the budding site is located 7–15 cm from the root collar and slightly bends the trunk, which in this area begins to grow slightly to the side. The absence of such a characteristic indicates a high possibility that there is a seedling on sale that will subsequently lack varietal characteristics.
- One-year-old seedlings usually have a height of no more than 90 cm, while two-year-old seedlings are much taller.
- An annual plant has about 8–10 shoots, the length of which can be from 10 to 20 cm. Biennials have at least 12 shoots with branches, up to 25 cm long.
- The root system of annual seedlings is about 25 cm in length.
During the selection process, you should also pay attention to the condition of the root system and above-ground parts: the rhizomes should be moist, and the shoots should be free of growths and damage. You should also know that according to GOST, seedlings must be completely free of foliage.
Choosing a suitable location on the site
When choosing a place to plant a future tree, you should take into account that this plot of land should be located on a small hill, which will eliminate the possibility of close occurrence of aquifers, and also be sufficiently illuminated. A part of the area near the fence is well suited, which will reliably protect the tree from the wind.
The soil should not be clayey or sandy, and if necessary, its structure can be improved by applying fertilizers (both organic and mineral). The planting hole for the seedling is prepared several months before the expected planting date - this will give the soil time to settle well.
The size of the planting hole is determined by the root system of the seedling with a depth of up to 25 cm and a diameter of about 50–60 cm.
Landing dates
The timing of planting seedlings may vary depending on the climate of a particular region. In a temperate climate, the best time to plant seedlings will be mid-April, when the buds have not yet opened, this will give the seedlings time to take root well in the ground. It is undesirable to plant seedlings in the fall in such conditions, since there is a possibility of them freezing in the winter.
But in the southern regions, autumn planting is quite acceptable; the main thing is to have time to carry out this procedure at least a month before the onset of the first frost, so the optimal period for this process will be mid-October. However, it is known that the richest selection of planting material is in the fall, but it is important to preserve it until spring.
Read more about the features of planting cherries in the fall.
In these cases, seedlings are buried until spring:
- Choose a place in the area where the snow does not melt for the longest time in the spring, and dig a shallow trench (30–50 cm) in the direction from the west to the east.
- On the south side the trench is covered with a wall with an inclination angle of 45.
- Young trees, the crowns of which should be on the south side, are laid in a row.
- The root system and 1/3 of the trunk are covered with soil.
- The digging area is watered generously.
- The seedlings are covered with spruce branches, which are designed to protect against rodents.
Features of care
Nord Star cherry is an unpretentious variety. When caring for it, standard agrotechnical techniques are used for this garden crop. The first 3-4 weeks after planting, which are considered the starting weeks, are important for the rooting of young trees in a new location. Regular watering, fertilizing and pruning during this period directly affect the survival rate of seedlings and their further development.
Watering and fertilizing schedule
Northern Star cherry variety easily tolerates long-term drought, but it is preferable to avoid moisture deficiency.
Watering schedule during dry periods:
- After landing.
- At the beginning of the formation of the ovary.
- 14-21 days before the berries ripen.
Advice! When watering, you must ensure that moisture penetrates at least 30-40 cm deep into the soil. You should not water trees during the rainy season, as stagnation of moisture can be detrimental to them.
Watering a young tree is required
In the first year after planting, the seedling does not need feeding. The tree receives all the nutrients it needs from the soil used during planting. It is recommended to apply the first fertilizers from the second year of life, from the moment the soil is depleted. The frequency and abundance of fertilizing should increase as cherries enter the fruiting stage.
Trimming
Crown formation is one of the important measures for caring for cherries. Pruning old branches and removing dead ones promotes tree growth and increases yield. It is necessary to prune a young tree annually, in the spring before the buds open. The cut site must be treated with garden varnish. On average, the crown formation process lasts 5 years.
The first pruning of the tree is carried out in the year of planting. The 6 strongest branches are left on the cherry tree, the rest are eliminated. It is important to regularly remove root growth, infected and unproductive branches.
Preparing for winter
It is recommended to begin basic pre-winter preparation at the end of October. The branches of the tree are pressed against the trunk and wrapped in straw, tops or burlap. You can protect the root system from winter frosts with the help of snow. To do this, make a small snowdrift around the trunk.
Young seedlings need to be insulated more thoroughly, as it is much more difficult for them to withstand winter frosts. Therefore, in the first year after planting, in addition to the main shelter, the tree trunk circle is also mulched with peat or sawdust.
Care
North Star does not require special care. It will grow and bear fruit in any conditions. But you should still provide it with at least minimal care: periodic loosening and destruction of weeds.
Although mature trees overwinter well, young plants are not as resilient. Therefore, it is better to cover them for the winter.
Watering
Nord Star does not require frequent watering. It grows without problems and bears fruit in the heat. But still, during prolonged drought, it is advisable to water the trees to provide them with comfortable conditions.
It is also recommended to water during flowering, when berries ripen, after harvesting and at the end of October.
Top dressing
North Star does not make any special requirements for fertilizers. But in order to increase the yield of cherries, it is recommended to fertilize with nitrogen in the spring (for example, use urea or calcium nitrate), and in the fall to apply organic fertilizers: manure, bird droppings or compost. They will ensure good flowering and accelerate plant growth. If the growth of a young tree is too slow, then superphosphate can be added to the soil in the autumn. Fertilizers are used in minimal concentrations.
In the first 2 years of the planting field, there is no need to feed the seedlings.
Trimming
Cherry trees need to be pruned in the fall. First of all, remove damaged, dry and diseased branches. Then proceed to formative pruning. There are 2 known methods of such pruning: thinning and shortening. When thinning, the branches in the ring are completely removed, as a result of which the crown is reduced and the sun's rays reach all the berries. When shortening, long branches are pruned, which activates the formation of new shoots. The cut areas are treated with garden pitch or mash, which is prepared from clay and manure.
If desired, gardeners give the crown of the cherry tree a spindle-shaped, cup-shaped or sparsely tiered shape.
Diseases and pests
During the flowering period, Nord Star cherries are highly susceptible to infection with moniliosis. The threat especially increases during long and heavy rains. Fungal disease is caused by the death of individual branches and weakens the tree as a whole.
For preventive purposes, it is necessary to regularly inspect trees to detect infected branches and leaves. In this case, the damaged parts of the tree are removed and treated with antibacterial drugs.
The appearance of spots on the leaves is the first sign of tree disease
Reviews
Gardeners agree on the unpretentiousness of the Northern Star. The variety is suitable not only for growing in ordinary gardens, but also in intensive gardens. A tree can be planted even if there is not enough space on the site.
But the taste of the berries causes a lot of controversy. It is believed that Nord Star fruits are too sour and can only be used for preservation, but some fans of cherries claim that they taste very pleasant and are happy to eat them fresh.
In addition, Nord Star, thanks to its compact bush-like crown, can become a garden decoration. It looks especially beautiful during the flowering period and at the time when it is covered with attractive scarlet berries.
Growing and care
Like most seedlings, cherries are planted primarily in the spring. This time is considered optimal, although for the southern regions planting is allowed in the fall. Cherry seedlings of the “Nord Star” variety can be purchased at the nursery. It is very important to choose high-quality material so that the seedlings do not die or get sick.
The place for the cherry tree is chosen based on some nuances.
The tree loves sunlight, neutral soil, does not tolerate flooding, or close proximity to the groundwater level. It is quite possible to plant a cherry tree on a small hill or hill; the tree cannot be grown in hollows and lowlands. Attention! Cherries can be grown with other fruit crops, but keeping a distance of at least 2-3 meters when planting.
With the arrival of spring, when the ground thaws, they begin to fertilize the soil in the planting area. They dig up the soil in the area, distribute it in a bucket of rotted manure and peat per 1 square meter, add a glass of superphosphate and 2-3 tablespoons of potassium sulfate. They dig everything up again and leave the beneficial substances to distribute in the ground for at least 2 weeks. When the soil is saturated, you can plant the tree.
Since cherries are considered a low-growing variety, a lot of space for planting them is not required. Dig a hole in the ground with parameters 50x50x50 and insert a seedling into it. They first fill it with the excavated bottom layer of soil, and then lay the remaining top soil. After planting, the seedling is watered with water.
Pruning is carried out one day after planting. Of all the shoots that are on the tree, only the strongest and largest ones are left, no more than 5 pieces. The remaining branches are cut off. The cut areas are filled with garden varnish to prevent infection from getting into them. Cherry pruning is subsequently carried out in the spring, in the first half, while the circulation of juices in the branches is inactive. Long shoots are always trimmed and dry branches are removed completely. Pruning for a cherry tree is important. It is she who lays the foundation for future productivity. determines the size of the fruit and the timing of their ripening.
Cherries are fertilized 2-3 times a year. The first fertilizing is carried out in the spring, ammonium nitrate is added to the soil. It will ensure the development of healthy green mass and also stimulate the development of the root system. In May, fertilizing is carried out with phosphorus additives and potassium salt. These fertilizers are responsible for the quality and size of the cherries. You can use folk remedies to fertilize the land. Take a glass of ash in a bucket of water, dilute it and leave for 1-2 days. Then water the cherries in the morning. Feeding the tree with rotted mullein and chicken droppings has an excellent effect.
Cherry pest control is carried out in the spring, before the buds swell. Fungicides and insecticides can be used; they have a wide spectrum of action and help destroy pathogenic microorganisms. The use of traditional methods is also quite acceptable; it does not harm the tree and has an antibacterial effect. An infusion of onion or garlic repels insects and reduces the risk of developing fungi and viruses. To make a decoction, 1 kilogram of peeled onions is soaked in 10 liters of water and left for 2-3 days. Then the mixture is filtered through cheesecloth and the resulting liquid solution is irrigated and watered over the cherries.
Description and characteristics of the variety
The tree is characterized by weak growth (height no more than 2.5 meters), looks more like a bush, has a compact crown of medium density with dark brown bark. Intensive growth is observed in the first years after planting, then its speed slows down. The leaves are small, narrowly oval and biserrate. The flowers are small, saucer-shaped, 3-4 pieces are combined into an inflorescence.
Nord Star is characterized by mixed fruiting, but the berries are mainly formed on one-, two- and three-year-old branches. The fruits are distributed evenly throughout the crown.
The berries are round, burgundy-colored, and one-dimensional. They are quite large, weighing 4.5-5 grams. The pulp is tender, very juicy and aromatic, easily separated from the seed, the juice is colorless. The taste of the berries is rated 4 points due to excessive acidity. Therefore, fresh fruits of this variety are eaten extremely rarely. They are mainly used for preparing dried fruits, compotes, jams, liqueurs, and fillings for pies.
Nord Star belongs to the late-ripening varieties. Flowers bloom in early May, berries ripen in mid-summer.
Nord Star cherries are self-fertile. It does not need pollinators and bears fruit well even in single plantings. But if you plant Nefris, Meteor, and Oblachinskaya nearby, you will be able to significantly increase the yield.
This variety is early-bearing: it begins to bear fruit already in the second or third year after planting. Every year it pleases with abundant harvests. 4-8 kilograms of berries are harvested from one four-year-old plant. At the age of 10-12 years, the tree produces 15-20, and sometimes 25 kilograms.
Agricultural technology
Cherries can be planted in spring and autumn, depending on the climatic characteristics of the region. The small size allows you to plant plants at a distance of 2 meters from each other, with a row spacing of 3 meters. The tree needs a lot of sunlight, the soil in the circle around the trunk should be moderately moist. It is worth refusing to plant in lowlands and areas with groundwater close to the surface. Despite the resistance to major diseases, preventive spraying should be carried out on time. It is also important to carry out sanitary and anti-aging pruning in a timely manner.
American Nord Star is valued for its productivity, frost resistance and unpretentiousness. The low plant is very convenient for care and harvesting. The compact size allows the crop to be used in intensive garden plantings; in addition, the variety is suitable for mechanical harvesting. However, if you evaluate cherries by taste, then they are more suitable for processing than for fresh consumption.
Picking berries and preparing cherries for winter
Cherry ripening occurs at the beginning of August or the end of July. The collection is carried out 2-3 times. The main indicator of fruit ripeness is the presence of an intense red color. They focus only on the color of the berries, since the taste of cherries remains sour even after ripening. The berries are well separated from the bush along with the tail. Cherries are stored in wooden boxes and baskets. The berries should lie in one or two layers, no more.
Attention! You only need to wash the berries before eating them. Washed cherries have a significantly reduced shelf life.
The cherries are placed in the refrigerator or cool place and left for no more than a month. At room temperature, cherries quickly deteriorate and become unusable within a week. For compotes, cherries are separated from the pits using a special device. The bone does not stick to the pulp and comes off well.
“Nord Star” cherry can withstand even harsh winters well, so it does not need special preparation for the cold season. All the tree needs is mulching of the soil near the tree trunk. This is quite enough for the roots to be reliably protected from cold and frost. Falling snow will help keep the ground warm.
Reviews from gardeners about the Nord Star variety
Variety Nord Star. Site information Database of common cherries (125 varieties are described) (At markets and exhibitions you will be understood correctly if you say “North Star”). American variety. Bred in Minnesota. Type of fruiting - mixed, partial self-fertility. Dark red berries up to 4.5 g, late ripening. Productive variety, relatively frost-resistant. Advantages: low growth of plants and compact crown, allowing the variety to be used in intensive gardens, suitability for mechanized harvesting. Disadvantages: excessive acidity of the fruit. (I didn’t think so.)

I completely disagree about Nord Star. Everywhere they write that it is a technical grade, suitable for processing. For me, it’s a terrible disgusting thing, completely inedible in its “live” form. If you compare it with Chernokorka, it is significantly inferior to it in taste. An absolute plus is the very late ripening and small size of the tree. Lovers of fresh cherries can extend the consumption season. Good in compotes. The son and father and her eat from the tree, because they are very big lovers of cherries, but even they note its mediocre taste.

The Nord Star variety has one big advantage. This variety is absolutely self-fertile and the harvest is practically independent of the weather. It bears fruit even if it rains throughout the entire flowering period (and for this variety it is quite extended). In such a situation, other varieties stand without a harvest, but this one deserves nothing! True, after ten years of using a tree of this variety, I got rid of it (regrafted). Because I prefer dessert varieties.

Message from blueberry: my husband bought a Nord Star seedling because it was short. How does it even taste?
No way! Pros: winter hardiness, resistance to coccomycosis, (sensitivity to moniliosis in rainy spring), self-fertility, low growth, good pollinator for many cherries...

This year I had my first harvest, the suitability of the variety is beyond doubt. Taste rating in Pomology 3.5 out of 5... The variety is purely technical. And I also like it when cherry juice is colored, while Nord Star’s is colorless... Spanka is even tastier. I’ll leave it for now because of its high winter hardiness and pain-free nature. In my conditions, these are the main selection criteria!

Who has (had) the late variety Nord Star - please share your impressions - the winter hardiness of the tree in general, how long the fruits hang without falling off, the taste after full ripening. I myself tried the Nord Star fruits in mid-July last year at a seminar in Biryulyovo. The taste was frankly sour, especially compared to the sweet fruits. But according to information from the website of the Yablonka nursery, the fruits hang until September without falling off and the taste becomes almost sweet.

Winter-hardy, disease-resistant, and self-pollinating, the Nord Star variety produces good yields with minimal care. Thanks to its compact tree, cherries can be grown in intensive gardens. Not everyone likes the taste of fresh fruits due to their excessive acidity. But the variety is ideal for processing: the acid adds piquancy to canned products.
