Characteristics and description of the Caramel tomato variety, features of agricultural technology

Features of the variety

The high-yielding tomato variety Caramel yellow F1 is a first-generation hybrid. Bred in Russia. The main positive characteristic of the variety is its early ripening and extended fruiting period.

Tall bushes reach 2 meters in height. These plants have a large number of stems, abundantly covered with foliage of a rich dark green color. The long stem may bend under the influence of pouring tomatoes. To prevent this from happening, the bushes must be tied to a trellis or to pre-dug stakes.

The ovaries form clusters with the simultaneous development of up to 50 fruits. The yield is quite high: per season from 1 sq. m of area, you can collect up to 5 kg of yellow Caramel tomatoes.

Characteristics and description of the variety

Before growing Caramel on your plot, it is worth familiarizing yourself with all the characteristics of the variety and its features, thanks to which tomatoes have gained their popularity among gardeners.

Did you know? There are at least 10 thousand varieties of tomato in the world.

Productivity

One of the advantages of Caramel is its high yield. Bushes with ripe tomatoes resemble bunches of grapes, and one such “bunch” grows from 30 to 50 fruits. And if you carefully care for the bushes, you can harvest about 4-4.5 kg of tomatoes from one square meter.

Description of the fruit

Tomatoes of this variety are small in size - about 3 cm in diameter and weighing 30 g. Their shape is elliptical or plum-shaped. The fruit is characterized by the presence of juicy pulp and dense, rather hard skin. The color of the skin varies from deep red to yellow and yellow-orange, depending on the variety you choose.

The taste characteristics of Caramel correspond to its name - the tomatoes are sweetish and may have a slight sourness. At the same time, the fruits have found wide use in cooking: tomatoes are consumed fresh, canned, used for preparing salads, snacks and as an edible decoration.

Universal varieties of tomatoes also include such as “Nadezhda F1”, “Rhapsody F1”, “Benito F1”, “Tolstushka”, “Countryman”, “Berberana F1”.

Description and characteristics of the variety

The Caramel Tomato was created by specialists. This is a determinate plant, the height of the bush is small, it grows at a small height of the bush and does not require pinching. The bush is compact, making it suitable for growing both in open ground and in small containers - pots on the windowsill and balcony boxes. But if you wish, you can plant it in a greenhouse.

In terms of timing, the cultivar is early ripening. Small tomatoes are collected in long and medium trusses. The weight of one fruit does not exceed 20 g, the color of the skin is intense pink. The description includes the main disadvantage of red and yellow caramel tomatoes. The downside is that it is impossible to grow a tomato from seeds collected from fruits grown on your own plot, since they do not inherit maternal qualities.

Growing rules

Even a novice gardener can grow tomatoes of this variety. Planting is carried out using the seedling method. Sowing seeds in containers to obtain seedlings begins in the third decade of March. You can do without disinfection measures, but you will have to treat the seed with a growth stimulant, which will increase the yield.

Soil consisting of garden soil with the addition of humus and vermiculite is placed in containers for sowing seeds. The seeds are placed in shallow furrows and sprinkled with soil on top.

Immediately after sowing, the soil in the container is watered generously and covered with plastic wrap. During this period, the main condition for normal seed germination is a room with a temperature of about +23 degrees.

After the sprouts appear, the containers are moved to a cooler place, well lit by sunlight.

Picking

Picking up tomato seedlings after the formation of two true leaves is of no small importance. Each seedling is placed in a separate container or in one container, but with a large distance between plants. Planting in a greenhouse or open ground is carried out in the second half of May. It is necessary to make sure that the soil is sufficiently warmed up and that there is no danger of a recurrence of frost.

Planting is carried out in this way: per 1 sq. m there should be no more than 3 tomato bushes of this variety. A handful of wood ash and a spoonful of complex mineral fertilizer are poured into each hole. After replanting, be sure to thoroughly water the soil with the seedlings.

Stepsoning

As it grows, stems that do not have an ovary are pinched. It is advisable to leave 1 - 2 large stems on the bush. To stop the growth of the plant in height, the top point of the bush is pinched, which provides access to the crown of sunlight, which has a beneficial effect on the formation of ovaries and the ripening of fruits.

To prevent the stems from breaking, periodic inspection of the bushes is carried out in order to timely tie them to supports or to a trellis.

Watering

Watering is of no small importance. Irrigation is carried out with warm water. If there is a well or well on the site, water is first collected in a large container, and after it is warmed up, watering is carried out. This procedure is carried out in the evening so that the water that gets on the leaves after heating it by the sun’s rays does not burn the leaves. Optimally, watering should be carried out at the root of the plant.

Features of planting and growing

Although this variety is unpretentious, there are still some nuances of planting and further growing this vegetable crop that you need to know about in advance. The Caramel tomato is grown in seedlings, with the seed material being planted approximately a couple of months before the seedlings are transplanted to a permanent location.

Seed preparation

Seeds of this variety are purchased in specialized stores. They usually do not require any pre-planting preparation, other than usually being soaked in a growth accelerator solution to germinate.

If the seed material was prepared from your own ripe tomatoes, then before planting they should be dipped in salt water so that the empty seeds float to the surface.

They need to be thrown out, and those that have sunk to the bottom are placed in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for disinfection. Then they are washed and soaked in water with roots for rapid germination.

Planting seedlings

A purchased substrate (for growing vegetable seedlings) is laid out in the container and watered. Then grooves 1 cm deep are made in the soil, into which the germinated seeds are laid out. The soil is leveled and the soil is sprayed again with a spray bottle. Then the containers are covered with polyethylene and put in a bright, warm place until the sprouts appear.

When friendly shoots appear, the film is removed and the containers are moved closer to the light. At the stage of two true leaves, plants are picked. Also, twice during the growing of seedlings it is fertilized with nitrogen-containing fertilizers. And 10-12 days before transplanting the seedlings to a permanent place, you need to start hardening them.

In mid-to-late May, strong, healthy seedlings are ready to be planted in a permanent location. The scheme for planting seedlings in a permanent place is 0.4 * 0.4 m.

How to water bushes

The bushes of this tomato are watered 2-3 times a week, preventing the soil from drying out or becoming too wet. Water for irrigation should be settled and warm.

Top dressing

For the first time, the Caramel tomato is fed a couple of weeks after transplanting to a permanent place. For this, complex mineral fertilizer or a solution of cow manure is used.

The following feedings are carried out at intervals of 20-25 days, using a mixture of superphosphate and potassium salt.

This tomato needs to be fed “leaf by leaf” a couple of times, using a weak solution of mineral fertilizers or diluted boric acid.

Harvest and storage

The harvest is usually harvested directly from clusters as they ripen. The collected fruits are also transported in brushes. You can store collected tomatoes in a cool place for a long time.

Diseases and pests

The Caramel tomato is practically not affected by diseases characteristic of other tomato varieties. To prevent the appearance of diseases, tomato bushes are sprayed with biofungicidal preparations a couple of times.

To get rid of emerging pests, the Caramel tomato should be treated with appropriate insecticidal preparations.

Tomato diseases and pests

The Caramel tomato variety is resistant to diseases, but you should be prepared for such manifestations in order to take timely measures. As preventive measures to combat the manifestations of diseases typical of tomatoes, such as tobacco mosaic, fusarium, late blight, the following measures are carried out:

  • loosening the top layer of soil;
  • removal of weeds;
  • treatment of plants before the formation of the ovary with Fitosporin or another type of preparation with antifungal properties.

To cope with insects dangerous to tomatoes, the bushes are treated with insecticides. Infusions and decoctions of chamomile and celandine have the same property.

The Caramel tomato variety is ideal for canning: the rich color allows the fruits to be used for preparing pickles and decorating dishes served at the table.

Tomato varieties called Caramel are a desirable tomato for growing on any plot of land.
