Characteristics of the Dacosta Portuguese tomato and cultivation of the variety

Dacosta Portuguese tomatoes are not very common in our latitudes, but those gardeners who have already tried to grow this variety give preference to it again and again. After all, the tomatoes turn out large, juicy and tasty.

Rules of agricultural technology of the Portuguese Dacosta

Portuguese Dacosta is planted in open ground when the soil at a depth of 15 cm has warmed up.
It is important that by this time the threat of return frosts has passed

By the time of planting, the seedlings should be 45–55 days old. If the plants are left too long, they will not take root well in the new location.

Landing at a permanent place

For tomatoes, choose a well-lit place. The beds are not placed in areas where groundwater is close to the surface and where no other nightshade plants have grown there in the previous two years. Tomatoes feel best after melons and melons.

Before planting tomatoes in a new place, the beds need to be prepared. In the fall, they are dug up and cleared of all plant debris. Fertilizers are added to the soil. For example: humus, rotted cow manure or chicken droppings. If the acidity is high, the soil is mixed with ash.

In spring, the beds are leveled with a rake and cleared of weeds. They are watered with chicken droppings diluted with water 1:10 and hot copper sulfate.

Holes are dug in the beds. Number of holes per 1 square. m depends on how many trunks are planned to be left for the plants. When growing in one stem, up to 4 plants are planted in this area; when growing in two stems, no more than 3.

Pour 1 liter of light pink solution of potassium permanganate into each well and add 1 tbsp. l. ash. When the liquid is absorbed, plants removed from the containers (if these are not peat tablets and pots) are planted in the recesses along with a lump of earth. The holes are filled with soil and compacted.

The plants are not watered or fed for two weeks. During this time, they will take root and take root in a new place.

Basic rules of care

The Portuguese Dacosta needs a garter. The bushes are attached to a support as they grow. They use synthetic thread - it is not subject to rotting. Since this variety has large and heavy fruits, it is additionally tied to supports and brushes.

Form tomatoes into one or two stems. The weight of the berries directly depends on the number of stems left to the plant. The fewer stems there are, the larger the fruits will be and the sooner they will ripen.

When pinching, remove all leaves up to the first flower cluster. Remove withered and yellowed greens. The procedure is carried out once a week, removing no more than three leaves.

Water the tomatoes as the soil dries. One plant consumes 2-3 liters of water.

The Portuguese Dacosta responds well to feeding. With regular fertilization, tomatoes turn out tastier and larger. It is recommended to feed this variety every two weeks.

Foliar boron fertilizing is applied twice a season. The first time is before the tomato blooms. Take 10 g of boron and dilute it in 10 liters of water. Bushes are sprayed with this mixture. The second feeding is carried out during the period of fruit formation, then the tomato will ripen faster.

Features of cultivation

When growing Portuguese Dacosta, gardeners should consider several nuances.

  1. To get large fruits, the ovaries need to be thinned. No more than three berries are left on one bunch.
  2. The fruits of the Portuguese Dacosta are prone to cracking. They are damaged by too much watering and when the soil dries out. Therefore, tomatoes are watered no more than 2 times a week in open ground and 1 time every 7 days in a greenhouse. Use 2-3 liters of liquid per plant.
  3. On hot days, to prevent fruits from cracking in open ground, a canopy is placed over them.
  4. To get more berries, the bushes are shaken regularly.

Diseases and pests

Portuguese Dacosta is characterized by increased immunity to tomato disease. Despite this, experienced gardeners advise not to neglect the rules of prevention:

  1. Disinfection. A dark pink solution of potassium permanganate or hot copper sulfate is used to treat the soil, greenhouse walls and garden tools.
  2. Follow the rules of crop rotation. Nightshades leave behind infections in the soil that infect new tomato plantings.
  3. Potatoes should not be planted next to tomato beds. This plant attracts pests.
  4. It is recommended to plant aromatic herbs (rosemary, thyme or basil) between the tomato beds. They repel harmful insects and attract beneficial ones.
  5. To wash off aphids from the bushes, they are sprayed with a decoction of wormwood. Infusions of other herbs with a bitter taste are also suitable. Another option is to prepare a soap-pepper solution. To do this, add a piece of grated laundry soap and 5 hot peppers twisted in a meat grinder to a bucket of water.

Dacosta Portuguese tomato

Growing conditions

The Dacosta Portuguese tomato variety is not picky about growing conditions, but responds well to fertilizing. A fertilized plant gives a higher and tastier harvest.

It is grown mainly in a greenhouse due to its high growth; the planting method is staggered. It also grows well in open ground. In this case, choose a sunny place without drafts.

Before planting in the ground, the seeds are germinated into seedlings. In the phase of 1-2 leaves, they are transplanted into separate glasses with fertilized soil; a week before transplanting to a permanent place of growth, the seedlings are hardened.

In early May they are transplanted into a greenhouse. They are tied up and stepsons grow as they grow, leaving two to three stepsons for fruit development. The growth characteristics of the vegetable are such that it is necessary to remove excess leaves. The procedure is carried out in sunny weather, and no more than 2 sheets per day are torn off. During the season, the plants are fed at least twice with organic and mineral fertilizers, and the tomato harvest will be juicy and tasty.

Weeding and loosening the soil is a necessary condition for obtaining a rich harvest of large and tasty tomatoes.

With abundant watering, the vegetable loses its taste and becomes more acidic, so you need to moderately moisten the soil, preferably at the root, without touching the green mass with warm water.

Tomato "Guernsey Island" (10 seeds).

Goji, Chinese dereza, Tibetan barberry (about 300 seeds).

Buy goji seeds. Chinese wolfberry, Tibetan barberry, Goji Berries, lycium barbarum, wolfberry. People also call it wolfberry. Goji is a creeping shrub of the nightshade family, native to Tibet. The fragile vine is covered with thin spines and reaches 3-5 meters, hanging down. The bark has a grayish tint. The flowers are white with a purple-pink tint. Goji fruits are small, up to 1.5 cm in length, red, juicy. Berries should not be eaten raw! They contain many biologically active substances that can cause poisoning. Therefore, the berries are dried in the shade, and after drying they become safe. They taste sweet and salty, sometimes sour, somewhat reminiscent of nightshades. Actually, nothing special if someone is interested in taste, but healthy. Goji berries and their amazing properties have been actively discussed since 2004, when information appeared in the Australian magazine “Bazar” that these berries have anti-cellulite properties. And who doesn't want to look beautiful? The problem of obesity was also acute in those years. Thus, many people began to become interested in goji berries, began to study its properties, and as it turned out, they also have a number of unique properties. A year later, the American newspaper Los Angeles Times published an article talking about the anti-cancer properties of berries and the presence of a wide range of vitamins and other beneficial substances in them. It was also mentioned that if you consume one tablespoon of dry goji berries every day, you can significantly improve the condition of your body, look younger and more respectable. Of course, among the first who decided to try this remedy on themselves were the powers that be, i.e. famous singers, actors, politicians, athletes, writers from Europe and the USA. In the East, they have known about the wonderful and healing properties of goji berries for a long time, for many millennia, but somehow they did not advertise it. The excitement caused around these berries was not without reason; goji indeed, as confirmed, had a unique set of natural components, namely: vitamins B1, B2, B6 and E, a lot of vitamin C, iron - 15 times more than in spinach, contain 21 minerals (such as iron, zinc, iodine, etc.), 18 amino acids (this is more than in royal bee pollen), 8 of which the human body does not produce, 4 essential polysaccharides (LBP-1, LBP-2, LBP-3, LBP-4), which are not present in any food product. This entire set can strengthen vitality, health and prolong life.

The description of the yellow peach variety is not entirely clear. firstly, if the variety is determinate, how can it be grown up to one and a half meters? secondly, it’s a potato-type leaf, but not a single potato leaf is visible, I haven’t planted this variety, I want to try, but the descriptions are so different that I don’t know what to do, whether it’s worth getting involved. This year I planted a “honey salute” tomato, bought it in a serious store, they were declared as bicolor, yellow-red, but they turned out dark brown. Marina

The peach tomato is one of the best that I grew this year 2018. The tomato is indeterminate, its height is 1.7 m. The taste of the fruit is excellent. The tomatoes are large, fleshy, sweet yellow-orange in color. Lyudmila Kodzasova calls these tomatoes a family variety. The tomato is quite productive, it sets well and bears fruit for a long time. I recommend everyone to buy it, you won’t regret it. Svetlana

I bought the seeds by accident, they said they were very sweet, try them. Not only are they sweet, they’re also like peaches with fluff. My daughter calls them tomato peach, she eats them with pleasure, and we don’t refuse to enjoy them

Description of the variety

Portuguese Dacosta is a varietal tomato bred by Portuguese breeders. It is a rare variety and is not sold in all stores.

In 2022, the Portuguese Dacosta tomato entered the top ten best tomato varieties. It is not easy to get its seeds, but if you buy them once, planting material can be constantly taken from the fruits.

Distinctive features of the Portuguese Dacosta

Portuguese Dacosta is a pink-fruited tomato. Produces large fruits. Some specimens reach a weight of 1000 g.

A characteristic feature of the fruits of this variety is their fleshiness. The berries contain a large amount of juicy but tender pulp. The tomatoes taste sweet, with barely noticeable sourness. They have a characteristic and rich tomato aroma.

The variety is immune to most tomato diseases. It does not suffer from root and crown rot, late blight and tobacco mosaic.

Another feature of the Portuguese Dacosta is its resistance to temperature changes. These tomatoes are suitable for growing even in open ground conditions.

A negative feature of the variety is the tendency of the fruits to crack. The larger the berries, the higher the likelihood of damage to them.

General characteristics

Tomato fruits contain a minimal amount of small seeds. To prepare seeds for the next planting, the largest and most beautiful berries are left on the bush until fully ripe.

Description and characteristics of the variety:

ParameterIndicators
Bush typeIndeterminate tomato. Height varies between 1.8–2 m. The bushes are medium-leaved, not spreading. The leaves are simple, medium-sized, rich green, without pubescence. The fruits are set in clusters. Each of them produces 3–5 berries. The inflorescences are simple.
Growing methodIt is possible to grow in open and protected ground. The tomato is resistant to temperature changes.
ProductivityHigh. Up to 7 kg of berries are harvested from one bush. From 1 sq. m get up to 20 kg of harvest.

There is no green spot at the base, but lighter spots may be present. The pulp is dense but juicy. The berries taste sweet, with a slight sourness and tomato aroma. The shape is round, flattened on both sides. There is pronounced ribbing at the base. There are many small chambers in tomatoes, more than 8. They contain a small amount of seeds.
TransportabilityThe fruits are suitable for transportation over long distances, but are stored for no more than three weeks.
Ripening timeMid-season. The first berries ripen 115–120 days after sowing the seeds.
Disease resistanceImmunity to tomato diseases is high.

How to grow seedlings

Portuguese Dacosta is grown only by seedlings. When sowing seeds directly into the ground, the crop will not have time to ripen before the onset of frost.

Sowing time depends on the region:

  • cities with a hot climate - end of April;
  • central Russia - second half of April;
  • northern regions – early April.

If you plan to plant tomatoes in a greenhouse, then start growing seedlings two weeks earlier.

Preparation of planting material

To obtain healthy plants with increased resistance to adverse environmental factors, they must be pre-treated:

  1. The seeds are soaked in salt water (1 teaspoon of salt per 1 cup of water) for half an hour. Specimens that float to the surface will not rise.
  2. Planting material is disinfected. It is soaked in a solution of soda (1 teaspoon per 1 cup of water) for 12 hours, in a light pink solution of potassium permanganate for 30 minutes, in hydrogen peroxide for 15 minutes or in aloe juice for 12 hours.
  3. To stimulate growth, seeds are soaked in commercial preparations (Epin, Sodium Humate), in a soda solution, aloe juice, or wrapped in damp gauze, placed in a warm place and germinated.

Container and soil

Tomatoes need light and nutritious soil. Suitable mixtures are sold in stores. Both a universal soil mixture and a special one for tomatoes and peppers are suitable.

They prepare the soil themselves. To do this, mix the base, nutrient substrate and baking powder. For example, garden soil (it is better to take it from the beds where you plan to grow tomatoes), peat and sand.

The soil is disinfected. It is poured with copper sulfate, a light pink solution of potassium permanganate or boiling water. Another option is to calcine the soil in the oven.

Portuguese Dacosta is usually sown directly into individual containers. This is a collectible variety that needs to be handled carefully. It is better to take peat tablets. Plastic and peat pots or disposable cups are also suitable.

Sowing seeds

1-2 seeds are sown in pots. They are buried 1-1.5 cm. The soil is watered before planting tomatoes.

Containers with planting material are covered with film and put in a warm place. The warmer the room is, the faster the seeds will germinate. At this stage, tomatoes do not require light.

Every day, the film or glass is opened slightly for 1 hour to prevent mold from forming on the soil.

It is more convenient to grow seedlings in peat tablets. They are filled with ready-made nutrient substrate. The seeds germinate quickly in them. When picking to a permanent place, there is no need to remove seedlings from such preparations.

Before use, the tablets are soaked in boiling water, adding liquid as they swell. Then a seed is sown in each workpiece, deepened by 1 cm.

Peat tablets with planting material are placed in a deep container. They are covered with film and placed in a warm place until the seeds germinate.

Seedling care

Good seedlings should be stocky, bright green, strong and have short internodes. To obtain such plants, they are provided with proper care:

  1. Water the seedlings with settled water at room temperature. The liquid is poured under the root of the plant so that it does not fall on the ground part of the bush. The soil is moistened as the top layer dries. If watered incorrectly, tomatoes become wilted. This happens both when the soil is over-moistened and when it dries out.
  2. After seed germination, the film is removed. Plants should be at room temperature. If they stand in a draft, this will lead to death. Tomatoes need 16 hours of daylight. The lack of lighting is compensated by fluorescent lamps.
  3. Fertilizing is applied three times during the entire period of growing seedlings. They use complex fertilizers containing phosphorus, which promotes the development of a strong root system. The first fertilizing is applied after the formation of the second true leaf, the next - every two weeks.
  4. It is recommended to grow Portuguese Dacosta seedlings without picking.
  5. 10 days before planting in a permanent place, the plants begin to harden. They are taken out into the air in the warm season for 1-2 hours, and their exposure to air is gradually increased.

Tomato Hidalgo

Mid-season (105-110 days from germination to ripening), determinate, racemose tomato hybrid for open ground and film shelters.

The bush is 0.5-0.6 meters high and requires tying to a support and partial pinching. The leaf is large and green. The inflorescence is simple.

Basic qualities of fruits

The fruits are elongated-cylindrical, smooth, dense, red in color at maturity, weighing 100-120 grams, excellent (for a hybrid) taste, with a strong skin. These tomatoes are excellent for whole-fruit canning and preparing canned food in their own juice (the skin peels off easily).

The value of the hybrid: intensive early harvest yield, excellent transportability and keeping quality of the fruit.

Features of cultivation, planting and care

We recommend sowing the seeds of this tomato for seedlings 55-60 days before the intended planting in the ground. Seedlings dive at the stage of two true leaves. When planting seedlings in a permanent place per 1 sq. It is recommended to place up to 5 plants per meter of plot.

Further care for tomatoes consists of timely watering, fertilizing with complex mineral fertilizer, pinching and preventive measures to protect against diseases and pests.

Tomato Dacosta Portuguese - description and characteristics of the variety

Today, domestic producers offer gardeners to get acquainted with a new indeterminate tomato variety called Dacosta Portuguese. This variety is excellent for cultivation in the regions of central Russia; it demonstrates high yields under good weather conditions and proper care. Some summer residents who have encountered these tomatoes speak only positively about it and claim that they have not tasted more tasty and meaty tomatoes. The fruits ripen quite late and look much larger compared to other varieties.

Structure and description of tomato

For the first time, Dacosta Portuguesea began to be grown in Portugal, and from there the seeds came to European countries and Russia. In greenhouses, bushes can reach a length of about 1.5-2 m, so the variety belongs to the group of tall tomatoes. From each bush it is possible to collect about 5 kg of fruit. Dacosta belongs to the mid-season round tomatoes. The surface of the fruit is ribbed or flat, the color is pink or pale red. The vegetables are juicy, fleshy, with thin skin and sweetish pulp. The weight of one ripe tomato ranges from 400 to 800 g. Tomatoes are used to make tomato paste or juices. They go well with other ingredients in salads and are suitable for canning or fresh cutting.

When the stems begin to form, the plant needs a garter, since heavy fruits during ripening can break them. Bushes with two or three strong and healthy stems produce the largest harvest.

Tomato Dacosta Portuguese. What is the description of the variety?

The tomato variety “Dacosta Portuguese” has almost no negative reviews.
And these reviews from those who have been growing them for more than one year were associated with weather conditions - wet summer makes tomatoes less sweet. This is one drawback. And the second drawback, which everyone writes about, is cracks on the first lower tomatoes, which are quite common. But all the other tomatoes did not cause any complaints.

Tomato growers are also unhappy if green or yellow “hangers” appear on their tomatoes.

The variety, I think, is a collectible variety; it is not yet very widespread, but it already has many fans. Seeds are sold through personal correspondence or on forums.

The bush needs to be formed into two stems in the open ground and can be formed into three in a greenhouse. It is imperative to tie up the bushes, because they produce a large harvest (over five kilograms per bush), and each tomato weighs on average four hundred grams. However, there are specimens weighing up to six hundred to nine hundred grams. Vegetable growers praise the color, sweet taste, and aroma.

This variety is classified as mid-season. “Dacosta Portuguese” is quite resistant to late blight. Loves feeding, which also affects the size of the fruit and taste (according to reviews). Caring for these tomatoes is the same as all others.

You can do whatever you want with these tomatoes. They can be preserved cut or combined with other vegetables.

Portuguese tomato came to us from Portugal and is quite rare in our country. This variety of tomatoes belongs to indeterminate, mid-season and tall tomatoes. The bush is tall, in some cases reaching 2 meters, requiring garter to a support. When forming a plant (stepping), it is necessary to leave no more than 2 stems.

The fruits of the “Dacosta Portuguese” variety are large, weighing 300–350 g, and if all favorable conditions are met, they reach a weight of up to 800 g.

Tomatoes at the ripe stage are rich pink in color, with excellent taste: the pulp is sweet, low-seeded, fleshy .

Advantages of the variety: excellent taste, good yield, large fruit, good commercial qualities.

Disadvantages of the variety: demanding on support and pinching, demanding on fertilizing, no resistance to major tomato diseases, does not have long shelf life of fruits, can change taste if not properly cared for.

This variety is intended for cultivation both in open ground and in greenhouses.

In cooking, tomatoes of this variety are recommended for fresh consumption, as well as for making various sauces and ketchups .

Description of the tomato variety Torquay

The first generation hybrid Torquay F1 is a determinate tomato with a powerful root system and intense foliage. The growth type is standard, the formation of lateral shoots is minimal, the plant practically does not require pinching.

The tomato is a mid-early, heat-loving tomato; when the temperature drops to +100 C, the growing season stops.

Torquay F1 is demanding on lighting

Special lamps are installed in greenhouses to extend daylight hours to 16 hours. The harvest is harvested in two stages, the first tomatoes ripen in June, the next wave occurs in July-August. From the moment of germination to the ripening of the last harvest, 120 days pass, the first is harvested after 75.

All tomatoes have an even mass, the density of the brushes is the same from the first circle to the last.

The tomato bush Torquay F1 (pictured) has the following characteristics:

  1. Height – 80-100 cm, which is considered tall for a determinate species. The bush is compact, densely leafy.
  2. It is formed by one central stem, thick, rigid in structure, stable. Torquay F1 is not a bush form of the crop, so it requires fixation to a support. Under the weight of the fruit, the stem bends and the lower branches can lie on the ground.
  3. The leaves are medium-sized, lanceolate, arranged on long petioles, 4-5 each.
  4. The leaf blade is dark green with a pronounced network of veins on the surface, slight pubescence (mostly in the lower part).
  5. Fruit clusters are simple. The first is formed after the second sheet and after two - the subsequent ones. Density 5-7 ovaries.
  6. Blooms with small yellow flowers. Hybrid Torquay F1 is self-pollinating.

The root system is taprooted and compact. Due to the structure of the root, the tomato is drought-resistant and does not take up much space. 4 seedlings are placed per 1 m2 without thickening the planting.

Description of fruits

Tomatoes of the hybrid Torquay F1 are cylindrical or plum-shaped, can be slightly elongated or more rounded. The fruit clusters are densely spaced, all of the same size.

Biological characteristics:

  • diameter – 7-8 cm, weight – 80-100 g;
  • the peel is dense, thick, not subject to mechanical damage and cracking;
  • the surface is smooth, glossy with a matte tint;
  • the pulp is red, juicy, at the stage of technical ripeness there is white pigmentation of the fibers;
  • three chambers, not many seeds, after they ripen, voids may form.

Important! Hybrid Torquay F1 does not retain varietal characteristics, so the seeds are not used to grow tomatoes for the next season. Table tomatoes, sweet and sour taste, not pronounced aroma

Table tomatoes, sweet and sour taste, not pronounced aroma

Features of cultivation

The species must be grown in seedlings. Wide containers with a height of 10 cm should be prepared in advance. They should have drainage holes to remove excess water. You also need to prepare a nutrient substrate:

  • 2 hours of turf;
  • 1 tsp peat;
  • 1 hour humus;
  • 1 tsp sand.

Immediately before planting, water the soil with a bright pink solution of potassium permanganate to disinfect it.

By the time Golden Fleece tomato seedlings are planted in a permanent place, the age of the seedlings should be 55 days, so sowing for further cultivation in a greenhouse should be carried out in the first ten days of March, and in unprotected soil - in early April. Before planting, treat the seeds in Zircon, which will increase plant immunity and improve germination.

Landing procedure:

  1. Fill the containers with soil, water well and wait until the moisture is absorbed.
  2. Compact from above, level the surface.
  3. Place the seeds at a distance of 1.5-2 cm.
  4. Sprinkle them with substrate - 0.5-0.7 cm.

The seedlings should be additionally moistened with a spray bottle.

After this, cover the containers with film and ensure they are kept at a temperature of +25 degrees. When friendly sprouts appear, which happens on the fifth day, move the containers to the windowsill and lower the maintenance regime to +18 degrees. In such conditions, it is necessary to keep the seedlings for seven days, which will allow them to grow roots.
