Potatoes Lady Claire (Claire): variety description, photos, reviews

Description of the Lady Claire potato variety

On the territory of the Russian Federation, the hybrid is recommended for cultivation in the Central Black Earth, North Caucasus and Central regions. Included in the State Register of Russia in the middle zone since 2005. A high harvest was noted in the Tver, Moscow, Smolensk, Vladimir, and Yaroslavl regions. Shows good productivity on all types of soil. In regions with a cool climate, it is recommended to grow the variety under cover or in greenhouses. In the south it grows well outdoors. Vegetable growers in cool climate regions grow the variety in greenhouses. The cultivar is suitable for industrial cultivation and mechanical harvesting. External parameters that allow you to distinguish the Lady Claire variety from other species:

  1. The bush is low and erect. An adult plant does not exceed 50 cm in height. The shoots are strong, powerful, and do not bend during the season. The tops are spreading.
  2. The leaves are medium in size, but there are also large ones. Elongated shape, beautiful emerald color. Open type, veins are visible, waviness or jaggedness is weakly expressed.
  3. The corolla is white, miniature. Flowers form at the top of the stem. The variety continues to bloom for a week. After 2-4 days, Lady Claire sheds flowers, in place of which berries are formed. If a flowering variety has no flowers, then the vegetable grower needs to find the reason for this phenomenon. Lack of budding may be due to poor choice of planting site or pest invasion.
  4. Lady Claire tubers are the main pride of the variety. The root system lies at a depth of 20-30 cm. From 10 to 14 tubers ripen on one bush. The fruits are resistant to damage and shock, and have a small number of eyes. The marketability of the variety is 90%. The shape of the potato is elongated, with rounded edges. The fruits are aligned, almost all the same size. The skin is slightly rough, elastic, amber in color. The pulp is light golden, without wateriness, dense. The taste is classic, sweetish-buttery. Taster rating: 4 points. The weight of one tuber is 80-120 g. During heat treatment, the potatoes do not change color and do not become soft.

Fruit evenness is an inherent parameter when breeding a variety.

In addition to external parameters, the nutritional value of the fruit is very important. They are distinguished by a high starch content (12-16%), and the calorie content of Lady Claire is 83 kcal.

The ripening period of the variety is 70-75 days, which gives the right to classify it as a mid-early species.

From Brigitte Tronier to Brigitte Macron

She was brought up in a family of hereditary chocolatiers in the city of Amiens. Five generations of confectioners supplied the entire city with delicious chocolate and other delicious sweets, but Brigitte initially chose a completely different path for herself, she decided to become a teacher of French and Latin. From early childhood she devoted a lot of time to reading and studying, and therefore it was always interesting to be with her. Young Brigitte could carry on a conversation on any topic and often compared herself to the main character of Flaubert's novel Madame Bovary.

At the age of 20, Brigitte Tronier married Henri Louis Ozier, who later became a banker and the father of Brigitte's three children. Surely, the life of the spouses was quite normal, at least, neither the future first lady herself nor her children ever complained about the unhealthy atmosphere in the family. And the reason for the divorce was all-consuming love, which was simply impossible to fight.

One day, Brigitte’s daughter, who studied at the Jesuit Lyceum La Providence, told her mother about her classmate. He was a funny guy and seemed to know about everything in the world. Laurence even called him crazy, referring to his knowledge in many areas. This was the first, so far, correspondence between Brigitte Ozier and Emmanuel Macron.

After Brigitte Ozier, who had previously taught French and Latin in Paris and Strasbourg, was hired at the very lyceum where her daughter studied. Emmanuel Macron began attending the theater studio taught by Brigitte. He stood out among other teenagers with his mature outlook on life and never embarrassed himself in front of those who were older. He communicated with teachers as equals and easily found answers to complex questions. And he was very talented, so he got leading roles in school productions.

She first saw him on stage in a production based on the play by Jean Tardieu, and after that they began working together on the play by Eduardo de Filippo. At that time they communicated a lot and became closer to each other. After the premiere, when the audience literally exploded with applause, Emmanuel Macron, in a fit of gratitude, kissed the teacher on the cheek. It is unlikely that she then perceived this kiss as a gesture not of a boy, but of a husband.

Emmanuel Macron already understood: he is in love with this charming, intelligent woman who understands him like no one else. But Brigitte tried to fight her feelings, convincing herself that this was just sympathy for a talented student. However, all the teachers at the lyceum were sure that in front of them was a young genius. And Emmanuel read his poems to Brigitte, but only so that she could appreciate his literary gift. And one day, timidly and embarrassed, he asked to read his novel. As Brigitte would later note, the work was quite daring and frank.

Emmanuel was persistent in his courtship and even informed his parents of his intention to marry Brigitte Ozier. Naturally, they were categorically against this relationship and even sent their son to study in Paris in the hope that metropolitan life would make young Emmanuel forget about his teenage feelings. Before leaving, Emmanuel Macron uttered a phrase that became prophetic: “You can’t escape me! I’ll come back and still marry you!”

It was not Brigitte Ozier who sought the student’s attention; on the contrary, she considered her feelings to be wrong and tried with all her might to abandon them. She threw herself into work, taking care of her own children, but then the phone rang and her heart beat joyfully when she heard Emmanuel’s voice.

And even when Brigitte realized her powerlessness in the face of an avalanche of feelings, she was in no hurry to divorce her husband, although she stopped living with him under the same roof. It took Emmanuel several more years before he was able to call the woman he loved his wife.

Characteristics of the Lady Claire potato variety

The external parameters of the bush are important when choosing the location of the ridges on the site. But vegetable growers are more interested in other qualities. These include:

  1. Frost resistance. The variety can withstand air temperatures down to + 1-4 °C. If there are return frosts in May, the potato seedlings will suffer. Then the potatoes will restore the above-ground part, but will slightly reduce productivity. The crop also suffers from frosts during flowering and tuber formation.
  2. Drought resistance is at a higher level. Lady Claire can tolerate drought for a long time, but waterlogging is dangerous for him. It is especially necessary to monitor the amount of moisture in regions with cool climates.
  3. Transportability and keeping quality. Good resistance to cracking allows crops to be transported over long distances. A long dormant period makes it possible to store the Lady Claire variety throughout the winter. Potato keeping quality is 90-94%.

Lady Claire potatoes are used for processing into flour and starch. It makes excellent chips, cereals, French fries and straws. Universal use in cooking. Used in preparing first courses, casseroles, and purees.

Important! Due to its high nutritional value, the variety is not recommended for the daily diet of overweight people.

The tubers are suitable for technical washing.

Productivity

The indicator was derived based on state testing data and reviews from summer residents. From 1 sq. m area, the Lady Claire variety produces 14.5-16.5 kg of tubers of excellent taste. The largest harvest was observed in the Vladimir region - up to 25 kg per 1 sq. m. Potatoes show their maximum performance on loose chernozem with the addition of sand. In heavy soil, productivity decreases.

Lady Claire is a mid-early variety. This parameter allows the plant to finish the growing season before most crop diseases appear. The tubers ripen very quickly. The growing season is 65-70 days. Young potatoes can be dug up after 1.5 months. And 75 days after planting, you can begin harvesting.

Advantages and disadvantages

Lady Claire potatoes have many advantages over other types. It was the list of positive qualities that allowed it to take its rightful place among popular varieties.

The unpretentiousness of the Lady Claire variety allows it to be grown even by farmers without experience and in different conditions

pros

  • high yield;
  • early ripening;
  • resistance to crop diseases;
  • decent presentation;
  • excellent taste;
  • ability to adapt to different weather conditions;
  • resistance to mechanical damage;
  • suitability for mechanical cleaning;
  • good transportability and keeping quality.

Minuses

  • increased starch content;
  • demands on the amount of moisture;
  • no immunity against late blight;
  • average resistance to drought.

Flaws

  • High starch content in tubers. Because of this, it is not suitable as a dietary food. Lady Claire contains 11-16% starch. The Meteor and Vesna varieties have the same number;
  • Despite their unpretentiousness to weather conditions, potatoes do not tolerate prolonged drought well. In dry summers it needs to be watered once every 10-15 days. Otherwise, the quality of the potatoes will drop. It will become shallow;
  • The variety does not like waterlogged soil. Due to increased humidity, fungal diseases may develop;
  • Does not have immunity from late blight, pests (Colorado beetle, caterpillars, potato flea beetle);
  • Potatoes must be dug up as soon as the tops are dead. If you keep the variety in the ground, the tubers can pick up a fungus and rot.

Lady Claire potatoes have attractive characteristics. Experienced and novice summer residents can cope with cultivation. The variety is universal. It can be dug in at the beginning of June, and in August it can be dug up and stored. Despite the fast growing season, root vegetables are well stored. In the cellar they do not lose their taste and marketability until next spring.

Landing rules

The basic rules are no different from conventional technology. The only rule is to fulfill all the points:

  1. Potato planting time. Optimally - early May. The Dutch variety should be planted when the soil warms up at a depth of 12-15 cm.
  2. Preparation of beds. Loosen the soil and remove all weeds. At the time of loosening, add wood ash, humus, and peat.
  3. Preparation of planting material. To get a high-quality harvest, you need to purchase seeds from a specialized store. They can be used without updating for 4 years. 2 weeks before the scheduled date, bring the tubers into a warm room for germination. Spray the potatoes periodically with water from a spray bottle to make sprouts appear faster. Before planting, treat Lady Claire seeds with a solution of potassium permanganate.

Important! It is not recommended to cut the tubers; they need to be planted whole.

After the preparatory activities, you can begin planting the variety:

  1. Mark the rows.
  2. Planting pattern: row spacing - 60 cm, leave 35 cm between tubers. Planting depth for Lady Claire potatoes is no more than 10 cm. This is important, otherwise the tubers may rot before germination.
  3. Place the seeds in the ground and cover with soil.

Seeds should be placed with the sprouts facing up to avoid breaking off.

To obtain a good harvest, the variety needs high-quality care.

Features of cultivation

The main points do not differ from the technology of crop cultivation. But Lady Claire has her own characteristics:

  1. It reacts very strongly to waterlogged soil. Therefore, you need to water the bushes only during dry periods. The optimal watering schedule is 3 liters of water per bush every 3-5 days. When the variety blooms, increase the amount of moisture to 6 liters per bush. 2 weeks before harvest, reduce the frequency of watering.
  2. Does not require a large amount of fertilizing. It is recommended to apply fertilizers in the fall when preparing the soil. For 1 sq. m area add 40 kg of manure, 15 g of potassium sulfate, 30 g of superphosphate, 200 g of ash. If the variety is grown on poor soil, then a one-time application of a mineral composition based on potassium and phosphorus will be required (only before flowering).
  3. Doesn't like being around weeds. Weeding must be carried out regularly so that the yield does not decrease.
  4. Responds well to hilling. It improves the condition of the bush and increases its productivity. The first time it is necessary to hill up the potatoes when the length of the shoots is no more than 5 cm. The second time - after a month.

It is not recommended to skip hilling, so as not to reduce the rate of development of the bush

Compliance with these simple points will allow you to get a decent harvest of the Lady Claire variety.

Biography

Elinor was born on 3 October 1292 at Caerphilly Castle in Glamorgan. The maternal granddaughter of King Edward I, she was married in 1306 to Hugh le Despenser the Younger, son of the Justiciar of Ireland Hugh le Despenser the Elder. One of the reasons for this union was that King Edward I owed Hugh the Elder 2,000 marks, and through this marriage the debt was settled. In addition, this marriage was a reward for the Dispensers' loyalty.

After the unexpected death of her brother, the Earl of Gloucester and Hertford, Gilbert de Clare, who died in the summer of 1314 at the Battle of Bannockburn, Elinor, along with her two sisters, Elizabeth and Margaret, became the heir to his vast possessions in the Welsh Marches. She gained Glamorgan, and later her husband captured Thornbridge.

In the fall of 1326, Isabella of France and her lover Roger Mortimer overthrew the king. On October 15, 1326, Elinor de Clare, to whom Edward entrusted the Tower of London before his flight from the capital, was forced to surrender it to the rebellious townspeople. Elinor's husband and father-in-law, captured in the west of the country, were executed, Edward II was imprisoned and deposed. Parliament proclaimed young Edward III, the eldest son of Edward II and Isabella, king, but actual power in England was in the hands of Roger Mortimer.

Elinor was imprisoned in the Tower in November 1326. Hugh and Elinor's properties were confiscated. Elinor's eldest son, Hugh, tried to defend Caerphilly Castle from Isabella's army, but was forced to surrender in the spring of 1327 in exchange for the promise of his life. He was also sent to prison, where he remained until July 1331. Three daughters, Elinor, Joan and Margaret, were forcibly tonsured as nuns. Only the eldest married daughter, Isabel, and the youngest, Elizabeth, who was an infant at the time, escaped this fate.

Elinor was released from prison in February 1328. Hereditary possessions were returned to her, for which she offered homage.

Pests and diseases

The description of the variety indicates crop diseases that Lady Claire resists very well. Potatoes are not affected by rhizoctonia, black leg, Y-virus, tuber rot, golden cyst nematode, and are resistant to cancer and scab. But the Lady Claire variety will not resist late blight. The disease can appear on any part of the plant - on tubers or tops. You should also protect potatoes from damage by Alternaria. Preventative double treatment of bushes with copper-containing preparations and a clear watering schedule will help prevent diseases.

The dense peel of the variety serves as excellent protection for the tubers from wireworms, mole crickets, slugs and the Colorado potato beetle. But the vegetable grower must protect the tops with treatments. You can use folk formulations or solutions of insecticides.

Important! Preparations are allowed to be used only before flowering begins.

Preventative treatments are necessary to prevent the spread of the pest

Harvesting and storage

The readiness of the variety for harvesting is indicated by yellowing and drying of the shoots. You cannot immediately store the tubers. First, the potatoes must be dried and sorted. Before storing, treat the tubers with copper sulfate.

The Lady Claire potato variety can be stored for more than 6 months. The optimal temperature for a vegetable storehouse or basement is + 2-4 ° C, air humidity 60-80%. It is recommended to store the Lady Claire variety in wooden boxes with sides 15-20 cm high, no more than 2 layers.
