After which you can and cannot plant onions before winter: we study crop rotation

When drawing up a table or plan for crop rotation in your garden, the main thing you need to start from is the restoration of those nutrients in the soil that were used up by the previous crop. Accordingly, the next plant must not only restore them, but also feed on other microelements and minerals.

Taking these requirements into account, the planting plan is drawn up taking into account the following rules:

  • Vegetables and herbs of the same type have the same pests and diseases, so they should not be planted in the same bed;
  • after late-ripening vegetables, the soil does not recover so quickly, and this factor shows that there is no need to plant early crops in this place next year;
  • you cannot alternate plants and vegetables that require the same microelements as their predecessors;
  • sowing in the same year after early crops, green manure plants that restore soil fertility, will bring many benefits.

The best predecessors before planting onions

The best predecessors for onions are:

  • zucchini;
  • green manure;
  • beans;
  • beans;
  • peas;
  • early potatoes;
  • cucumbers;
  • pumpkin;
  • cabbage.

After these plants, the onion will not only grow quickly, but will also delight you with a good harvest.

Also, favorable soil is considered to be one in which organic fertilizers were applied in large quantities before planting. After planting and during the growing season, organic matter is not added to the onion beds, as this harms the plant.

Winter sets are planted after corn, tomatoes, lettuce and cucumbers. A cold-resistant crop will sprout at an air temperature of +5…+7℃. But do not forget that the lower the temperature, the later the shoots will appear.

The best neighbors, what to plant nearby

The best neighbor in the garden is strawberries. They have an excellent symbiosis, as a result of which strawberries develop and grow. Its berries become larger and sweeter. But after it it is not recommended to plant this vegetable. In addition to strawberries, onions get along well with carrots, celery, lettuce and beets.

Union with carrots

Interesting! Onions next to carrots is a classic combination. Carrots cope well with the onion fly, which often affects the vegetable crop. This type of planting will not require the use of insecticides.

It’s amazing how the harvest of such a seemingly simple plant can depend on its predecessors and influence its followers. It is very important to choose the right plants growing before and after, as well as allies. Then the results will be able to exceed even the wildest expectations. Even beginners, having studied a number of simple rules, will be able to grow a crop that will be the envy of experienced gardeners who do not know them.

Timing and rules for planting before winter

Before planting in the fall, planting material is sorted and sorted. Specimens with signs of disease, rot, or mechanical damage are removed.

Selected sets are sorted by size into three groups: bulbs up to 1 cm in diameter (oat), from 1 to 3 cm in diameter (sets) and more than 3 cm in diameter (selection). Seeds from the first and second groups are planted for growing bulbs; the selection is well suited for planting on greens.

The planting bed is chosen in a well-lit place

It is important that rainwater and moisture do not stagnate on it after the snow melts

To protect against diseases and pests, the soil is disinfected with a solution of copper sulfate (1 tbsp per 10 liters of water). Water at the rate of 2 liters per 1 sq. m.

Then fertilizers are applied. For each square meter use 3-4 kg of humus, 5 kg of peat, 2 tbsp. l. superphosphate. The earth is being dug up.

The finished beds are leveled and compacted. Furrows 5 cm deep are cut on the surface of the earth at a distance of 15 cm from each other. The seedlings are laid out in furrows at a distance of 3-4 cm from each other and sprinkled with a mixture of peat and humus.

Landing dates

On average, winter onions are planted from October 5 to October 30. When determining the timing, they are guided by the climate of the region and the weather. As soon as the outside temperature drops to +5...+7°C and remains at this level for a week, planting begins.

If the weather is unstable, the sowing can be divided into two parts. Plant one in mid-October, the second at the end. There is no point in planting after the onset of frost - the onions will freeze and will not sprout in the spring.

To protect crops from freezing, before frost, the bed is mulched with peat in a layer of up to 2-3 cm. In spring, the mulch is removed so that the soil warms up faster. If in winter the temperature drops below -10°C, the soil is additionally covered with snow.

Onion agricultural technology

Onions have been known for a long time and grow in the garden beds of all summer residents. Rarely does a garden manage without it. This plant is planted on both turnips and feathers. At the moment, a huge number of varieties have been bred, differing in size, color, composition, methods of consumption and agricultural technology. Hybrid forms are extremely resistant to pests and diseases, but at the same time they are very productive and unpretentious in care.

The peculiarity of any type of onion is that it is demanding on the presence of minerals in the soil. The exceptions are calcium and phosphorus - the culture is less susceptible to their low content. As the onion grows, the soil is fertilized with nitrogen fertilizers. What vegetable crops can be planted after different varieties of onions should be taken into account when planning plantings.

If onions are planted in the spring, the soil is prepared in the fall. The beds are dug up and organic matter, such as humus, is added. Then they wait until the winter passes, and the area is cleaned. The second thing to do is feeding with minerals. You can also dig up the soil if necessary. They are usually fertilized with a mixture consisting of potassium chloride, urea and superphosphate. The soil is disinfected by exposure to copper sulfate. The solution is prepared as follows: a tablespoon of the product is dissolved in a full bucket of water. Watering with this mixture is carried out a week before the planned planting.

Onions in the garden

For sowing, seeds or a small onion set grown from a seed last year are used. In any case, planting material must be disinfected in a solution of potassium permanganate. You can also treat with growth stimulants so that each head gives maximum results. It is important to think about it in advance, after which you can plant onion sets in the spring. Mostly sowing is done in open ground.

Spring planting is carried out in the first days of May, provided that the soil has already warmed up well. The secret is that if you plant small bulbs, up to 1 cm in size, as early as possible, sometimes even at the very end of April, they will not sprout. A little later, the sets from the main batch are sown; the size of such bulbs is on average 1.5 cm, but not more than 2 cm. If you plant sets of this size earlier, shoots will form and the harvest will be reduced.

For planting in the fall, take seedlings as small as possible, not exceeding 1 cm. Such heads will still disappear before spring, they may dry out and lose half their weight. If sown a couple of weeks before the onset of frost, it will overwinter well. In addition, the shoots will appear early enough in the spring, it will not go into arrows and will produce a bountiful harvest.

Autumn planting has a number of advantages:

  • there is no need to store the seedlings until spring;
  • When the onion emerges early in the spring, it outstrips the weed in development;
  • Winter onions will yield a harvest two weeks earlier than those planted in the spring; this is an advantageous factor when growing for sale.

Interesting. Hot varieties of onions are more frost-resistant.

Onions can withstand fairly severe cold, and their seeds sprout even at 6 °C. It should be borne in mind that the colder it is outside, the later the onion will begin to sprout. If you wait until it warms up to 18 °C, then in a week the plants will begin to germinate.

Planting onions

The most popular varieties are:

  • Bulb. Distributed in many regions with different climates. It is unpretentious in care, which is why gardeners love it so much;
  • Chives. Widely used in cooking, common in the North Caucasus. Tolerates frosts well. It begins to produce feathers early and requires regular removal of leaves for further green growth;
  • Multi-tiered. The leaves form several rows, which is why it got its name. It has the most pronounced bactericidal qualities. It is not frost-resistant, but can withstand slight cold;
  • Slime bow. So named because of the large amount of mucus that comes out when the feather is cut. The taste is not tart, but more delicate, and the smell is more reminiscent of garlic. Recommended for anemia;
  • Leek. The intensity of the taste is similar to the slime onion. Contains a lot of useful substances;
  • Shallot. It has a sweet and sour taste, contains ascorbic acid and phytoncides;
  • Mongolian. A crop with beautiful flowers, but at the same time having healing properties. You can often see it grown on a windowsill.

Next to what does a crop grow best in open ground?

It's hard to find ideal neighbors; you always have to put up with something.

Onions are often placed between rows:

  • beets;
  • salad;
  • cucumbers;
  • strawberries;
  • spinach

This is because it has a fibrous shallow root system that absorbs nutrients from the top layers of soil. And its neighbors are plants with long taproots. And they get their food from the depths. That is, no one takes food from anyone.

Carrots, tomatoes, cabbage, and potatoes will not shade onions while they are growing their leaf mass.

Attention! By placing onions and garlic next to cucumbers, you can protect them from bacteriosis.

Good neighborsPros of the neighborhoodDisadvantages of the neighborhood
CarrotThey protect each other from insects.Sets, unlike seeds, are best planted 1-2 rows from carrots, otherwise the yield will be lower than with single planting.
TomatoesThey produce useful fungicides and have a similar drinking regimen.Plant onions on greens, because... due to lack of light, the tubers will not develop.
CabbageLike onions, cabbage needs regular watering at first.Plant onions only on greens, otherwise the cabbage leaves will shade and prevent the tubers from developing.
PotatoFor potatoes, the proximity of onions is very useful - it repels the Colorado potato beetle.For onions, the proximity to potatoes is indifferent, as long as they do not end up in the shade.
BeetSubstances secreted by beet roots have a beneficial effect on onions.Dense beet foliage will not add to the yield of onions. Can be planted on a feather.
PepperDifferent levels of nutrients in the soil, identical growing conditions.Plant between rows so that the peppers do not shade the onions.
Salad
SpinachIf the bow is on the feather.
RadishOnions protect radishes from pests.Bow on feather.
ParsleyTakes up little nitrogen.
StrawberriesOnions protect the berry garden from diseases and pests. They do not interfere with each other when consuming nutrients from the soil. Perennial onions are especially good - in the same cycle with the berry plant for 4-5 years. Plant so that the onions have enough light.
ChamomileChamomile phytoncides protect onions.Plant chamomile rarely so as not to shade it.
DillDill improves the taste of onions.Plant onions on feathers.

When and how to plant onion sets in open ground

What crops can be planted after onions?

When choosing what can be planted in the garden after onions, take into account the remainder of mineral fertilizers that were left unused last season. In addition, the soil is slightly alkaline, which is why vegetables are selected for which such conditions will be ideal. These include:

  1. Strawberry. This plant will feel comfortable in the garden after the onions. In addition, substances that can disinfect the soil remain in the soil. This way, the strawberries will grow healthy and produce a good harvest;
  2. Beets and carrots. They will grow well in the area where onions grew. Root crops will grow large if their neighbors are tomatoes, spinach, and peas;
  3. Tomatoes and cucumbers. These plants will bear a large number of fruits, which will delight the gardener. In addition, these cultures do not resist other predecessors. The only thing that needs to be done is to revive the soil before planting;
  4. Cabbage and pumpkin. These crops will sprout quickly and begin to actively develop in the bed where the onions grew. In addition, these plants will not need additional food, since the fertilizers that were applied to the onions will be enough for them.

If the question arises of what to plant in place of onions, which belong to early varieties, then in this case you need to choose early crops as a replacement. It can be:

  • peas;
  • black Eyed Peas;
  • early variety of carrots;
  • beets of early varieties;
  • radish;
  • ultra-ripe cabbage.

These crops will delight the gardener with generous harvests already at the end of September. In August, as soon as the onions are harvested, you can sow greens or radishes. Their seeds will quickly sprout and begin to grow and develop. By October, a new set of fresh, juicy vegetables with a full range of vitamins and minerals so necessary for the human body will appear on the table.

Sewing change for onions

For spring crop rotation, you also need to know after which you can plant onions in the spring. After all, in order for it to produce a good harvest, it needs to create comfortable conditions. Before planting this plant, you should take into account the fact that onions need to grow on the sunny side of the site. In addition, its growth requires minerals such as phosphorus and magnesium. These substances remain in the ground after crops such as:

This is explained by the fact that when growing all these crops, mineral fertilizers are added to the soil, which are not used up during the growth process. Therefore, the onion receives all the essential microelements it needs to grow. Experts created a table in which they indicated in different colors what, when and after what should be sown in open ground.

Advice. To get a double harvest from one bed, you need to plant onions after harvesting early varieties of potatoes. This is done in July. Thus, harvests of two crops will be obtained from one bed per season.

Experienced experts give their recommendations, after which it is better to plant onions. After conducting a series of experiments, they came to the conclusion that this crop produces an excellent harvest if the predecessors were legumes, grains or herbs, vegetables for which fertilizers are applied, such as potatoes or cabbage.

Not suitable for sowing

In addition, grain crops provide double benefits. First of all, they saturate the soil with essential minerals, and secondly, they act as allelopaths. That is, when growing cereals on the site, the number of weeds is significantly reduced. Barley and rye are not suitable for restoring soil for onion plants.

Important! Onions develop well after clover and buckwheat. But it is recommended not to grow them until they are ripe, but to plow them into the ground

Thus, the soil will be enriched and loosened. In spring you can already plant onions. After such manipulations in the fall, you can get a generous harvest.

Good neighbors

If your dacha plot is small, but you want to plant different vegetables, combined planting is used. Thus, the summer resident does not leave a single piece of land empty. In this case, you can collect several harvests with one hundredth. In this case, you must follow all the recommendations of specialists. Most often, gardeners combine crops such as onions, radishes, parsley and carrots.

They do it as follows. Onion sets should be planted in the garden bed, but the distance between the bulbs should be at least ten centimeters. Radishes are sown between them. Then you can sow carrots and parsley between the rows. According to the harvest time, each plant has additional time for growth and development. First of all, radishes are removed from the garden, after which comes the turn of onions. And when carrots and parsley remain in the garden bed, they have enough space for growth and development.

Important! It is recommended to sow perennial onions and leeks at a distance from onions

Onion predecessors for planting: best, neutral and worst

Before talking about successful and not so successful predecessors, it is important to mention on what soil the crop can grow normally. The best for the plant is black soil, fertilized before planting. Onions thrive on peat, sandy and loamy soils provided they carefully care for the soil and regularly apply complex fertilizers.

Heavy clay soil is not suitable for vegetables. Shoots on it will be rare, the density of the soil will not allow the bulbs to grow fully. Sandy soil is also not the best option for growing.

Useful: after which crops is it better to plant onions?

The most successful predecessors are vegetables:

  • legumes (peas, beans);
  • cauliflower and early white cabbage;
  • different types of lettuce;
  • potato.

It is also useful to plant the crop in the area after plants that were actively fed with organic fertilizers last year - cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplants.

The culture grows well after green manure. They are sown on the site specifically to restore the nutritional value of the soil. They are also called green fertilizers. Most often they are planted before winter, and in the spring they are cut off 2 weeks before planting. Plowing of such herbs in the fall is also used; many of them are planted 2-3 times during the summer and mowed.

Reference

Green manure plants from the legume (annual lupine, vetch, clover) and Cruciferous (white mustard, oilseed radish, rapeseed, rapeseed) families, as well as phacelia from the Borage family, are considered the best for onions.

Many summer residents have discovered that onions grow well after... nettles! This is true, since this plant enriches the soil with potassium, nitrogen, silicon and important amino acids. For this reason, nettle is also a folk remedy for fertilizing the soil.

Neutral: non-harmful

Onions can be planted without harm to the soil and plants after the following vegetables:

  • beet;
  • late white cabbage;
  • celery;
  • spinach.

These plants also do not bring any significant benefits, but they do not deplete the soil either. After them, onions are planted if there are no other options.

Harmful: after which you can’t plant onions

Undesirable precursors are:

  • carrot;
  • garlic;
  • broccoli;
  • parsnip;
  • any types of onions;
  • radish, radish.

Also, you should not plant the crop after fennel, dill, parsley, basil and other herbs.

Soil condition after onions

Everyone knows that for good growth of a crop, a complex of certain minerals is necessary. Onions are no exception. If it is replanted in one area for several years, the soil will lose a large amount of minerals, and, accordingly, the plant will not grow large and healthy.

There is another reason why planting onions in the same place is impossible - these are pests and their larvae that remain in the soil and live there and wait for food. The same situation applies to diseases whose pathogens do not disappear. For example, we can cite late blight, which affects some vegetables. Its bacteria stay in the soil for a long time and can infect any plant that is sensitive to it.

Note. In addition, vegetables release substances that, in fact, help the vegetables that replace them grow.

It is worth remembering celery, which repels pests that attack cabbage. Wheatgrass growing on the site is destroyed with the help of rye.

Selecting a successor, what can be planted after the onions, is a very important stage in gardening. A suitable replacement will give the soil a chance to rest and accumulate the minerals that were used. In the process of selecting a “replacement”, it is necessary to take into account which minerals will help the plant grow and develop. They must be different and located at a different soil level from the previous ones. To make it easier to coordinate the sowing process, it is recommended to keep a notebook where the sowing changes of previous years will be kept records.

When choosing vegetables that can be planted after onions, and other plants, you must follow the following rules:

  1. Plants belonging to the same species should not be planted nearby, otherwise the plants may be damaged by both bacteria and insects in the soil;
  2. It is necessary to refrain from sowing early-ripening vegetables after late-ripening varieties. Depleted soil does not have the opportunity to accumulate useful substances;
  3. It is not recommended to sow plants in the same area that require the same minerals for growth;
  4. Having collected vegetables of one crop, you need to immediately sow the seeds of a plant that can restore the mineral balance of the soil.

Interesting to know. After the onion harvest, you don’t have to wait for the sowing cycle to end. There are crops whose ripening period is very short, so they are sown immediately after harvesting the predecessor.

Why is crop rotation important?

If you plant the same crop in one place for several years in a row or alternate it with unsuitable vegetables, the soil is depleted and harvests become poor. In addition, diseases and pests characteristic of a particular plant accumulate in the soil and affect annual plantings with greater force. This also leads to a decrease in yield.

Reference

Each plant needs more certain elements, which it actively takes from the soil. As a result, the soil becomes depleted, and every year the crop grows worse and worse.

Also, the roots of some plants secrete substances that can inhibit the growth of others. Many crops are sensitive to their own root secretions, for example, spinach, beets.

Knowledge of good and bad predecessors, as well as the optimal proximity of vegetables, allows you to prevent these problems. Compliance with the principles of crop rotation is necessary to maintain the quality of the soil and increase productivity.

Experienced and practical gardeners draw up on paper a schematic site plan for several seasons in advance, indicating the planting locations for the vegetables they grow. One of the basic rules is not to alternate plants belonging to the same family in the garden. Next, we will look at the basics of crop rotation as applied to onion vegetables.

What can you plant after potatoes next year?

Potatoes are considered a good predecessor for many garden and vegetable plants. This is due, among other things, to her eating habits. When planting potatoes, they often add not even humus, but almost fresh manure, since they are fine with this. Over the course of a season, the manure in the bed naturally completely rots, almost without losing volatile nitrogen compounds. Potato bushes consume some of the nutrients, but a fair amount of them, in a form accessible to plants, remains in the soil. Therefore, next year it is enough to just slightly correct the condition of the soil by introducing certain mineral fertilizers, depending on the preferences of the crop chosen for this bed.

Potatoes do not extract very many nutrients from the soil and do not deplete it

In addition, potato bushes are so strong that they suppress the development of most weeds, and the soil remains fairly clean. Not too many toxic substances remain after potatoes. True, it attracts the Colorado potato beetle, and any vegetables affected by this pest have no place next year in the area where potatoes were grown. However, there are few such crops, and almost everything grows well after potatoes. You can plant next year in this place:

  • any root vegetables (for example, radishes, carrots, beets);
  • various “green” crops (salads, mustard greens, hyssop, etc.);
  • onions, garlic (these bulbs are famous for the fact that they themselves disinfect the soil well);
  • any types of cabbage (white and red, cauliflower, savoy, kohlrabi, etc.);
  • cucumbers and generally any pumpkin crops (zucchini, squash, pumpkins);
  • legumes (beans, lentils, peas): they saturate the soil well with nitrogen compounds.

Before planting root crops, the former potato bed can be hardly fertilized

Dill and parsley also grow normally in former potato beds, but it’s even better if you plant them in this place a year later.

It is best, of course, if you have time and space, to sow any green manure after the potatoes - herbs that are mowed before flowering. These are, for example, lupine, oats, mustard, etc. Green manures restore the soil well. If the potatoes were harvested early, then the herbs can be sowed this year, then the soil will be in ideal condition by the new season.

What can be planted and after what?

Here we will look at what is allowed to be planted and sowed after certain specific crops. The recommendations look like this:

  • Carrot. It is best to plant cucumbers, early potatoes or onions at once. An acceptable option is planting after tomatoes or cabbage.
  • Onion. It is better to place this crop on the soil on which cabbage, nightshade, cucumber or early potatoes grew in the past. If there is absolutely no choice, then it is allowed to plant onions after grains or legumes.

  • Tomatoes. They are less demanding on the soil, so they are allowed to be placed in the former place of onions, legumes, cabbage, cucumbers or root vegetables.

  • Cucumbers. Here the predecessors can be all legumes (except beans), onions, root vegetables, potatoes, cabbage, and nightshades.

Interesting: Why are cucumbers bitter, what to do

How does crop rotation occur in the field?

The only thing we know about growing bulbs in an open field is that it is a troublesome business. However, there are such craftsmen who are not afraid of difficulties and soon, onions begin to appear on the field. Careful care of the plants leads to the fact that in the fall the crop is harvested and the field is plowed. Further actions depend on the owner; if he wants to plant carrots in an open area, then use a cultivator to cut the ridges, plant winter carrots and cover with mulch. If the next planting is intended for beets, then after plowing, the area is leveled and left untouched until spring. In early spring, beet seeds are sown.

So that the onion is noble

It is important to know when to plant onions, but you must follow the other nuances of growing. The culture is unpretentious; planting and caring for onions will not cause difficulties

Place it in a well-lit area (no shade), without flooding or stagnant moisture. It is also important that the area is checked well - this prevents rot and fungal diseases, while the bulb develops better. Onions are not afraid of loamy soil, but its reaction should fluctuate within the pH range of 6.5-7.9 (neutral or slightly acidic environment). Dolomite flour, garden lime, ash or chalk powder helps to bring the soil back to normal.

Be aware that you cannot apply lime and other fertilizers at the same time: this reduces the amount of nitrogen in the soil.

The soil has been dug up since the fall and humus is added for fertilizing (about 5 kg of organic matter is consumed per square meter). In the spring, the area is loosened again and mineral fertilizers are added - a mixture of urea, potassium chloride and superphosphate.

Onions are resistant to temperature fluctuations and are most often planted before winter. Planting in spring is possible, just wait until the soil warms up to 10 °C.

In spring, the crop grows actively and should be watered abundantly (especially when grown for feathers). You will also need to loosen the soil. When heads begin to form, water only on hot, dry days. Then they stop watering the “turnip” completely. After the top part dries, the harvest is carried out.

Planting onions before winter allows you to harvest an early harvest. And the body really needs vitamins after a long winter. In the article we will reveal the nuances of autumn planting onions, and also tell you after which crops you can plant onions before winter.

Planting green manure after harvesting onions

If mid-season or late-season onions were grown at the dacha, harvesting can begin at the end of August or beginning of September. The period of night frosts will soon begin, so it will not be possible to plant a new crop after the onions are harvested. To saturate the soil with useful substances and establish crop rotation, you can use green manure, which in everyday life is called “green doctors”. Their planting will allow:

  • prevent weeds from appearing;
  • fertilize the soil;
  • fight pest larvae and pathogenic bacteria, which in turn will ensure cleansing and disinfection of the soil;
  • carry out good loosening of the soil due to strong roots.

For each site you need to select a specific green manure. This plant is classified into 5 varieties. The cruciferous family saturates the soil with phosphorus, sulfur, and organic matter, and protects plant crops from wireworms, root rot, and nematodes.

The Asteraceae family is a source of complex, difficult to decompose organic fibers. Cereals will help fill the soil with potassium, nitrogen and organic matter. Buckwheat will saturate the soil with the same microelements as cereals.

Important! When choosing green manure for onions, special attention should be paid to the cabbage family

Basic rules of crop rotation

Crop rotation is the process of alternating vegetable crops and plants when planted on a plot of land. Agricultural scientists indicate three main reasons. Based on which it is necessary to observe the annual rotation of vegetable plants in personal plots:

Increased concentrations of pathogens and pests

By the way, when using the same areas for several seasons of potato cultivation, the concentration of pathogenic late blight, wireworms, and pest beetles will increase. Accordingly, each subsequent harvest will be less productive, and efforts to combat diseases and pests will increase significantly.

Predecessors of the bow

We have already found out what to plant after onions, and now let’s talk about what can be planted after onions so that there is a good fruit yield, and after which it is strictly forbidden to plant onions. First of all, it’s probably worth saying that the soil should be on the sunny side and not covered by shadow, it should be full of nutrients, namely potassium and phosphorus. Therefore, the best predecessors after which to plant onions are peas, pumpkin, tomato, cabbage and green manure. Typically, onion planting begins in late April or early May, but if you want to sow in July, the best place for seedlings will be in the bed after harvesting the early potatoes. Substances left in the ground after vegetable crops such as carrots, cucumbers, garlic and onions can have a negative impact on turnips.

Good company for onions would be neighboring beds with lettuce, radishes, beets, strawberries, spinach, carrots and cabbage. But it is not advisable to plant turnips next to beans, peas and beans, because they adversely affect the composition and growth of the vegetable. By the way, proximity to sage and chamomile also negatively affects onions.

Is it possible to plant onions next to garlic? This question often interests beginning gardeners. No one can give a definite answer. Some believe that the garlic smell serves as protection for the bulbs and drives away the onion fly and weevils from turnips. Others argue that such proximity has a detrimental effect on the bulbs, because the garlic crop feeds on the same substances as the bulbs, so there is a lack of fertilizer, which leads to early yellowing of the feathers and small fruits.

After what crops should vegetables be planted before winter?

The ideal precursors for winter onions are green manure and vegetables that loosen the soil:

  • rape;
  • mustard;
  • Vika;
  • beans;
  • peas;
  • phacelia;
  • cereals, with the exception of oats.

It is possible to plant after tomatoes, cabbage, lettuce, and cucumbers. The vegetable is not planted before winter, following parsley, celery, alfalfa, radish, and oats. In this case, carrots are a suitable neighbor for the vegetable.

Reference

Despite the widespread recommendation to plant winter bulbs after potatoes, this should not be done due to the high risk of damage by wireworms and nematodes.

Soil fatigue: causes

Each vegetable feeds on the same substances; if they are constantly planted in last year’s place, this will lead to depletion of the soil. Consequently, in a couple of years the area will become unsuitable for growing other crops due to the lack of any minerals. Even applying fertilizers in one season will not correct the situation, since depleted soil very slowly replenishes its reserves and can only restore vitality after two to three years.

In addition, when planting a plant in the same place, pathogenic bacteria and pest larvae that specialize in this vegetable begin to accumulate in the soil. They are capable of infecting a garden bed and remaining in it for several years in a row. Naturally, the source of fire will not have the best effect on the planted vegetables, which will lead to the instant death of the root system and fruits.

There is also a risk of allelopathy in plants, because in the soil there are thousands of root systems that constantly interact with each other. Each root is endowed with certain chemicals, and for one type of plant this “neighborhood” has a beneficial effect on crop growth, while another type begins to die. For example, if you plant cabbage next to celery, the latter vegetable will protect the heads of cabbage from whites.

What can you plant next to onions?

The most traditional “neighbor” of onion vegetables is carrots. The advantage of such close growing can be considered that each of the crops has a detrimental effect on the harmful insects of its neighboring vegetable.

What else can be sown next to the onion ridge is:

  • tomatoes;
  • beets;
  • white cabbage;
  • chicory;
  • garden strawberries;
  • thyme.

What can you plant after onions in August?

Onions grow in potassium-rich soil. Such fertilizers must be added to each site owner when growing this crop. However, potassium-rich soil is not always suitable for other crops. Moreover, planting onions in one place year after year is also wrong. This can lead to soil depletion. Therefore, there will inevitably be a decrease in yield.

There is such a thing as soil fatigue. It is caused by the content of a certain set of mineral elements in the soil. They accumulate due to the cultivation of the same crop. The same is true for onions.

In order to avoid soil fatigue, after harvesting the onions in August, you should plant some other crops in the vacant space. They will avoid soil depletion and improve its quality for sowing other plants next year.

These plants should be listed in more detail:

  • Chinese cabbage. It allows the soil to “rest”, preserves its ability to produce high yields and saturate plants with useful elements;
  • Lettuce is a neutral crop. Spinach has similar qualities. Therefore, these plants are recommended for planting after the August harvest of onions. Compliance with this rule will make it possible to preserve soil fertility;
  • If onions were harvested in September or late August, radishes may be planted after that. Even if the harvesting took place in August, you need to give the bed a little rest and sow it with radishes in September. Former onion beds sown with radishes produce excellent yields.

It should be separately noted that it is not worth leaving the bed unclaimed after harvesting the onions. First of all, an unseeded bed will suffer from exposure to sunlight. In addition, the soil structure will be disrupted due to the lack of a root system. Therefore, if there is no need to sow lettuce, Chinese cabbage or radishes, then it is recommended to sow annual flowers. But the best option would be green manure. These are special plants that improve the condition of the soil and prepare it for sowing other useful crops for the next year.

In addition, after harvesting the onions, you should fertilize the soil with nitrogen and peat. This will also create excellent conditions for high yields for the next agricultural cycle.

Soil composition requirements

Onion is a fairly demanding crop in terms of soil composition. The bed should be prepared in advance so that the applied organic fertilizers (mullein, bird droppings) are thoroughly rotten and do not create an aggressive environment for plant roots. Mineral fertilizers are also necessary, but it should be borne in mind that their excess negatively affects the plant and there is an accumulation of chemicals in all parts, especially in the underground part (bulb).

The soil acidity level should be close to neutral. If necessary, deoxidize the soil (for example, with ash or dolomite flour). As a winter onion, plant onions in the garden not with seeds, but with sets, then in early spring you can get an excellent harvest of green feathers. There is also a method for obtaining onion turnips by planting small onions in the fall. In the spring, the sets should be planted in well-warmed soil, otherwise there is a high probability of mass shooting of onions.

However, late sowing dates are not advisable, since late development of the turnip bulb adversely affects the subsequent quality of the vegetable. How to plant seed material in order to create conditions for the proper formation of the plant and ensure subsequent proper care - the answer is simple: the bulbs are placed in the soil to a depth of no more than 4 cm, maintaining a distance between them of about 10 cm. The inter-row distance is 25 cm. It is advisable to mulch the soil with humus .

The influence of crops on the soil

Optimizing plantings will be especially useful for small areas. If the same crops are grown in one place for a long time, then the soil is depleted, because they take the same nutrients from year to year. Remains of plants with diseases and pests on them also accumulate. The beneficial effect of some crops on others when alternating planting or growing nearby has long been proven. But there are also harmful effects of plants on each other.

When growing vegetables in the garden, various fertilizers are used. They can be organic or mineral, depending on the needs of the particular crop. Due to this, after the fruits ripen and the harvest is harvested, the soil loses some nutrients and is oversaturated with others. Accordingly, when growing the same vegetables in the same bed, this situation is aggravated. If you alternate planting crops, following the rules of crop rotation, you can avoid this problem. In addition, the composition of the soil will become more diverse, it will not require replacement for a long time, and it will be easy to grow healthy plants.

Important! Vegetables belonging to the same family should not replace each other in crop rotation. Alternating planting of vegetables prevents the development of diseases and pest attacks

Long-term cultivation of the same crop without changing location leads to the accumulation of pathogens of common diseases and larvae of harmful insects in the soil. With the help of some plants, you can disinfect soils by planting them in the garden bed. This is achieved due to the bacteriological properties of certain types of crops. Such vegetables include, for example, onions. It cleanses the soil of bacteria and fungi that have a detrimental effect on other plants, and no matter what vegetable is grown after it, the result will be good. But it also cannot be cultivated for several years in a row in one place, you need to understand after which to plant onions for its high yield

But it also cannot be cultivated for several years in a row in one place, you need to understand after which to plant onions for its high yield.

The basic rules of crop rotation are as follows:

  • do not cultivate crops in one place that are susceptible to the same type of diseases or attack by the same insects;
  • After late-ripening crops, you should not plant early-ripening ones next year, because the soil does not have time to recover quickly;
  • do not plant plants that consume the same elements from the soil after each other;
  • it must be taken into account that, in addition to consuming substances from the soil, the root system of vegetable crops also releases various chemicals that can negatively affect other plants;
  • When harvesting an early harvest in a vacant area, it is recommended to plant green manure in the same year to improve the quality of the soil - plants that act as fertilizer when incorporated into the soil after the growing season.

The predecessors of the onion, like the onion itself, should be planted in a sunny place, it is necessary to open access to light and air to the garden bed. Although onions are considered low maintenance, they should not be planted in soils with high acidity and a lack of potassium and phosphorus.

Interesting. Experienced gardeners advise planting turnip onions not in late spring, but in July, after harvesting early potato varieties, for a better harvest.

It is better to plant the same fast-growing and early-ripening crops in front of it. Such vegetables best retain the nutrients required by onions. The most successful of them:

Carrot. Its smell will repel the onion fly, thereby helping to preserve the harvest. It is recommended to make beds with these crops nearby;

Tomatoes. They will also grow well after onions;

Potato. They are often planted together, this helps to repel various harmful insects;

Peas. It practically does not extract nutrients from the soil. It is quite acceptable as a predecessor of onions;

Cabbage. Although this vegetable depletes the soil after itself, this will not affect the yield of onions.

What soil and conditions do onions need?

Onions like the beds to warm up, so they are planted as seedlings in sunny or slightly shaded areas. The optimal soil for this crop is rich loam, not acidic, moderately moist, with good air permeability. You cannot plant onions:

  • in the lowlands;
  • in places where groundwater is high (it will rot);
  • in cold soil;
  • in acidic soil.

The last point can be corrected, but not on the eve of sowing: the acid is removed by liming, and this is done 2 years before planting the onions.

The beds where onions will be sown in the spring are dug up in the fall using a spade, carefully removing weeds and applying fertilizer. For 1 m2 you need:

  • 5 kg of compost mass (or manure, but always stale!);
  • 1 kg of ash.

Fresh manure as a fertilizer for onions is destructive: you should refrain from planting the crop even in cases where the bed was fertilized with such manure a year earlier. You can use ready-made mineral fertilizers for onions.

Spring reclamation work only involves lightly loosening the bed with a rake; if the soil becomes heavier, you can lightly dig up the top layer. Deep digging will disrupt the soil structure formed over the winter and speed up the evaporation of moisture. In spring, fertilizers are applied at a shallow depth so that the short roots of the onion can easily receive the nutrients they need for nutrition.

Although this is a fairly cold-resistant plant (adult onions tolerate ground frosts down to -5°C), it grows best in the temperature range from 12 to 26°C. Therefore, the optimal time for planting is the first ten days of May. Depending on the variety, the growing season for onions ranges from 3 months to six months.

  • In normal warm weather, it is enough to water the onion beds once a week, and weed and loosen them with the same frequency.
  • In hot and dry weather, you can do more frequent loosening (2 times a week) so that the soil does not become crusty.
  • You need to look at the onion feather: if the tips begin to dry out, additional watering is necessary.
  • To avoid the accumulation of excess moisture in the soil and rotting of the roots, take a closer look at the color of the feathers: if they become pale green, there is a lot of water in the soil, you can wait a little longer with watering.

The subtleties of planting onion sets: video

Crop rotation should not be disrupted when growing onions, as this can lead to degeneration of the crop, reduced yields and the establishment of pathogens and insect pests in this area of soil. It is unacceptable to try to correct the situation by applying excessive amounts of fertilizers and more intensively treating the bed with pesticides. All crop rotation rules are the same for all types of onions and members of the onion family.

Features of crop rotation

To grow good onions, you need to study after which crops they feel comfortable on the site. Where and after what can you plant it. Although onions are an unpretentious plant, they get along well with different crops in the garden.

First of all, you need to create comfortable conditions for him. You need to know that onions love the sunny side

The presence of magnesium and phosphorus is important for its growth. These minerals remain in the garden after harvesting:

  • cabbage;
  • tomatoes;
  • eggplant;
  • peas;
  • zucchini;
  • green manure;
  • spinach;
  • salad;
  • celery;
  • squash.

As these vegetables ripen, minerals are added to the soil that they do not have time to use up. After these vegetables, the onion receives its nutrients in full.

To obtain a double harvest, after the potato harvest in July, you can plant early-ripening onion varieties. Thus, you can get two crops from one bed.

Studies have shown that onions will grow better after:

  • legumes;
  • cereals;
  • spicy herbs;
  • potatoes;
  • cabbage

Onions give an excellent harvest in place of buckwheat and clover. But they cannot be grown until fully ripe. They are plowed into the ground green, so the earth is enriched and rests until spring. As a result of this procedure, you can expect a rich harvest next fall.

Useful tips

If onions are grown only to eat feathers, then you can first sow radishes, dill or spinach, and then, after harvesting, immediately plant another crop without waiting for next year. It is recommended to plant legumes after green onions, and alternate beans with cucumbers and carrots. The onion itself cannot be sent to the same bed more than three times in a row. And when changing the “place of residence”, it is better to send them to those areas whose crops need to be fed, and as a result, a supply of useful substances remains in the soil. After onions, you can plant almost anything, as they act as a natural soil disinfectant. If you fertilize the soil correctly, then, in fact, you can plant a crop next to any “neighbors”.

As mentioned above, the future garden bed should be placed on a well-lit and, most importantly, ventilated surface. This choice will contribute to the better development of the plant, the prevention of fungi, and protection from rot. Ideally, the soil should have a slightly acidic or neutral environment, but if the indicators are not normal, the soil is fertilized with dolomite flour, lime, ash or chalk powder.

It is important to remember that the simultaneous introduction of lime and other fertilizer is not recommended, as this will reduce the amount of nitrogen in the soil. In the fall, the earth is dug up, and then fertilized with humus - there should be about 5 kilograms of organic matter per square meter of soil

In the spring, the area is cleaned, fed with mineral fertilizers and, if necessary, dug up again. A mixture of superphosphate, potassium chloride and urea is used as fertilizer. The bed will definitely have to be disinfected with a solution of copper sulfate. As a rule, one tablespoon is diluted in a bucket of water; the soil will need to be watered with this solution approximately a week before the start of sowing. Sevok, a small onion grown from seeds, also deserves preliminary preparation. Usually it is kept in a solution of potassium permanganate or copper sulfate, then dried for 20 days in a warm room, after which the heads are sent to a temperature of forty degrees to strengthen. In addition, it is useful to treat the seeds with growth stimulants.

Rules for crop rotation when growing this crop

If the same species is grown annually in the same area, the soil is depleted, since the plants draw the same nutritional elements from it every season. After harvest, crop-specific pathogens and insects remain in the soil, increasing the likelihood of damage the following year.

For each cultivated species, certain fertilizers are used that meet the requirements of the plants. During the growing season, roots pull some mineral and organic substances from the soil and leave others behind.

As a result, after harvesting, there is an excess of some elements in the soil and a deficiency of others. In the absence of a change of site for a particular crop for several years, the situation with uneven content of soil elements worsens.

Basic rules of crop rotation when growing onions:

  1. Do not plant related crops that are affected by similar infections and insect pests in one area for several years.
  2. Do not grow early-ripening species after late-ripening onions. Because the soil cover will not have time to recover.
  3. Do not plant crops next to onions that take the same nutrients from the soil.
  4. After harvesting the early harvest, it is advisable to sow green manure in the same season in the cleared area. They will be an excellent fertilizer after the growing season ends.
  5. Plants that release substances into the soil that negatively affect the development of turnips should not be planted next to onions.

Basic theory

Those who are engaged in the cultivation of agricultural crops and receive scientific knowledge for this are well familiar with the concept of crop rotation. It originally sounded like “multi-field”, and means the correct alternation of cultivated plants on the available land area.

Even novice vegetable growers know that if you plant herbs and vegetables in the same place for 2-3 years, you cannot count on a good harvest, no matter how optimal the set of all other conditions may be.

Important! Planting the same crops in a constantly localized space over time leads to soil depletion, which is commonly called fatigue.

The problem is that certain crops require a specific set of microelements that are present in the soil. Every year the deficiency of useful components increases and the accumulation of others secreted by the root system increases. Correct rotation allows other “new settlers” to use what hinders their predecessors and make up for what is missing in the soil with their own products.

There is one more important circumstance: pests that still manage to overwinter in the soil, despite the most thorough treatment, wake up in the spring and find crops suitable for destruction. If you plant onions in the same place before winter, you can lose the harvest even before they are fully ripe.

This can be safely avoided if you know which plants leave no potential danger to the bulbs and feathers.

The main advantages of the scientific approach and the use of the principle of crop rotation make it possible to significantly improve the situation in just 12 months. If you plant onions before winter after correctly selected predecessors, you can achieve several beneficial effects at once:

  • improving the hygroscopicity and water permeability of the soil for planting and achieving maximum absorption of fertilizing applied in advance;
  • using deposits made by other crops that interfere with their growth for the benefit of freshly planted vegetables;
  • restoration of microflora and optimization of the process of restoration of depleted soil;
  • making full use of the soil available to the vegetable grower and obtaining large and healthy onion heads during the harvest period.

Fact! Many years of scientific experiments with crop rotation have made it possible to determine after which crops rotation brings maximum benefit, and to provide recommendations for the use of this method.
However, if you plant onions before winter after their natural opponents or do repeated plantings in the same place, you can’t count on a good harvest.
