Among the huge number of varieties and hybrids of tomatoes, a special place is occupied by those intended for cultivation in open ground. Today, tomatoes have been bred that are distinguished by excellent productivity, excellent taste, unpretentiousness, and they bear fruit directly on the ridges.

In the southern regions, it is not difficult to grow tomatoes like this; for areas with a harsh climate, you have to select appropriate varieties. In our review, we will look at which tomato varieties will be the most productive for open ground, note low-growing, disease-resistant early tomatoes, new hybrids, and hope that the article will be useful.

  • 1 Main characteristics of tomatoes for the garden

  • 3 Dwarf tomatoes
  • 4 Tall large-fruited varieties
  • 5 The sweetest ground tomatoes
  • 6 Phytophthora-resistant plants
  • 7 Super early and early

Main characteristics of tomatoes for the garden

When choosing tomatoes for growing outdoors, you need to consider a number of factors. In the middle zone, and even more so in the northern regions, tomatoes that will be maximally adapted to such conditions are suitable for planting on ridges.

This means they must be:

  • cold-resistant;
  • early ripening;
  • resistant to various diseases and pests.

The taste and size of the fruit are of no small importance.

ON A NOTE! Many gardeners quite rightly believe that self-pollinating tomatoes grown in garden beds are much tastier than their greenhouse counterparts.

The favorites will be low-growing, early-ripening varieties that form compact bushes that do not require pinching. They are easier to care for (you just need to install small support pegs), and the variety of types will allow you to choose the right size and color of tomatoes. Among modern “short” tomatoes there are very productive determinate varieties of tomatoes, large-fruited ones, and popular cherry tomatoes.

Indeterminate tomatoes in open ground are recommended to be grown in the south, as they have unlimited growth and medium-late or late ripening. Although today early indets have been bred, from which, in the short summer season, a good harvest can be harvested.

A large selection of ground tomatoes is offered by Siberian breeders, who are very fruitfully working on developing new varieties and hybrids. The priority is to breed tomatoes that have high immunity, tasty and sweet fruits, and early ripening.

Our review will present various groups (including the newest varieties), so based on the criteria, you can find out which tomatoes to plant in open ground, their description, characteristics, and features.

Self-pollinating tomatoes

Self-pollinating plants are crops that contain male and female organs in their inflorescences. The relevance of the selection of self-pollinating tomatoes is associated with the problem of fertilization and formation of berries during the flowering period in windy and rainy weather. Self-pollinating crops do not require special care, produce good yields, and are resistant to diseases.

Monomakh's hat

The variety belongs to the category of tall plants, the average height of the vine is 1.5 m. The average yield of the Monomakh Cap tomato is from 14 to 20 kg per square meter. Technical ripeness of berries occurs on the 90-110th day. During the designated period, the fruits acquire a red-pink color and reach a weight of 350 to 500 g. The plant is resistant to many diseases.

Mikado

Mikado tomato is a tall crop of the nightshade family with unlimited stem growth. When grown in the garden, the stems of the plant reach 1.5-2 meters in height. The tomato belongs to the mid-season category of plants; the ripening period of the berries is on average 110-115 days. The yield per 1 m2 is from 6 to 7 kg with an average berry weight of 250-300 g.

Eagle Heart

The Eagle Heart tomato is a large-fruited tomato crop with a ripening period of up to 110 days. With proper care, the variety's yield reaches 13.5 kg per 1 m2. The pink, heart-shaped berries, weighing up to 400 g, are characterized by a high content of sugar and amino acids and, due to their rich vitamin composition, are suitable for baby food.

The best tomatoes for open ground

The tomatoes presented here have received many positive reviews from gardeners from various territories and regions of Russia, so they can rightfully be called the best. The best varieties for growing in Russia

Our country is huge, and therefore its climatic conditions are varied. Some regions are famous for their warm climate and fertile soil, while others have unstable weather conditions and lack of sunlight.

In this regard, agronomist breeders have developed special varieties that take root in any climate and at the same time bring a good harvest.

Leaders are considered:

  • Ground Gribovsky;
  • Red Arrow;
  • Gina;
  • Solar;
  • Doris.

For Siberia and the Urals

For gardeners in these regions, we recommend planting the following tomatoes :

  • Bull forehead;
  • Alsou;
  • The Velvet season;
  • Demidov;
  • Lady fingers.

For the Middle Band

The “Middle Zone” conventionally refers to regions with a temperate climate. On such lands they get along well:

  • White filling;
  • Newbie;
  • Alpha;
  • Supermodel;
  • Persimmon.

For the Moscow region

Residents of the Moscow region were a little more fortunate with weather conditions, so they can safely plant tomatoes:

  • Andromeda;
  • Sweet bunch;
  • Nevsky;
  • Fitous;
  • Sultan.

Far North

Varieties for the Far North have increased resistance to frost . Such tomatoes form faster - summer in the regions is shorter, which means there is less sun and heat.

Tomato varieties have good yields:

  • Polar;
  • Taimyr;
  • Labrador:
  • Siberian;
  • Marusya.

Phytophthora-resistant plants

One of the most important characteristics of tomatoes intended for open ground is their resistance to diseases, and especially to late blight. Usually these are non-sapling plants, low and very unpretentious. Gardeners love low-growing varieties, because even in the difficult conditions of the European North, the Urals, and Siberia, they can produce delicious tomatoes for salads and preparations.

We present the most persistent “tin soldiers” among tomatoes:

Dwarf

An early and unpretentious “crumb” tomato produces many small red fruits. The weight of each is up to 50-60 grams, the taste is good. Tomatoes are shelf-stable, suitable for salads and processing.

The Gnome variety is very disease resistant.

Boni MM

This early tomato also “escapes” from late blight, and all because its fruits ripen in 80-83 days.

The bushes are low, standard type, 45-50 cm in height. The tomatoes are round with slight ribbing, weighing up to 80-100 grams, beautiful red color. The taste characteristics are high, the flesh is sweet and without sourness, which is rare for early ripening tomatoes.

Amur standard

A low-growing and very productive variety, producing red fruits weighing up to 100-120 grams when ripe.

These are unpretentious and cold-resistant tomatoes; their bushes are up to 40-50 cm high. Ripening time is 85-90 days. Standard tomato, does not need pinching, the tomatoes are delicious.

The house is rich

Another tomato that is resistant to late blight, as well as fusaorium blight, has good yield (up to 8-9 kg per square meter).

The variety is low, up to 45 cm tall, with large dark green leaves. Tomatoes are slightly ribbed, bright red, weighing about 80 grams. The taste is excellent; the tomato is mainly used for fresh consumption.

Japanese creeping

One of the shortest growing tomatoes, it is also disease resistant.

Its bushes are only 20 cm high, the branches and stem spread along the ground. A very decorative variety. The fruits weigh about 90-100 grams, very tasty and juicy.

This variety is grown in garden beds; it also bears fruit well on balconies and in hanging baskets.

Polfast F1

High yields are shown by tomatoes bred in Holland, including the Polfast hybrid. The fruits are harvested after 85-86 days, the tomatoes are tasty and juicy. The color is bright red, weight is about 140-150 grams.

This hybrid has excellent taste and unpretentiousness. Due to the ultra-early ripening period, it is not susceptible to late blight.

Mid-early low-growing varieties of tomatoes

Early varieties of tomatoes that begin to bear fruit 95-105 days after germination. Among the representatives there are both dwarf forms and real giants. Some species can be harvested before the first frost.

Explosion

Tomatoes of this variety ripen 93-100 days after germination. From one bush you can harvest from 2 to 4 kg of crop. The quantity depends on the agricultural technology of cultivation and the intensity of lighting - the higher it is, the larger and more numerous the fruits will be.

The bush is not tall - up to 60 cm, but requires garter, since the stem is thin. The first clusters appear quickly, but give a meager harvest. The bulk of the fruit comes from later ovaries.

The fruits are almost regular round in shape, smooth. Color – red. Medium sweet. Average weight – 100-120 g. Used in any form. They do not tolerate transportation well. Resistant to late blight even in the rainiest summer.

Superclub

Part of the Klusha line of tomatoes. Fruit ripening occurs 100-105 days after emergence. One plant can produce up to 3 kg of harvest. And this is with an average bush height of 40 cm.

Among other advantages of the variety:

  • ease of care;
  • formation of a compact low-growing bush;
  • a dense crown that protects the fruits from caking in the sun;
  • does not require pinching;
  • The average weight of the fetus is 150-250 g.

The taste of tomatoes is moderately sweet. The shape is round. Pink colour. The structure resembles the variety “Bull's Heart. Suitable for both salads and canning. Resistance to diseases is average.

Pani Yana

The undoubted pride of the Siberian collection of 2022: with a relatively small growth, the bushes of this variety produce large fruits weighing up to 250 g. In total, about 5 clusters are formed on one plant. From one square meter you can harvest up to 5 kg of crop.

When tomatoes ripen, they acquire a pale pink tint and do not crack. Under these conditions, the garters are poured evenly, acquiring a rich taste and aroma. The skin of the fruit is of medium density, the pulp is very juicy and sugary. Can be stored in a cool, ventilated area for up to 2 weeks.

Purpose: salad, for processing

Demidov

Although the early varieties of tomatoes from the Siberian collection were bred for the purpose of cultivation in the cold regions of the country, they reliably took root in all other regions. The Demidov variety is no exception. It adapts well to low temperatures and thrives in short daylight conditions.

The bush grows up to 60 cm. Does not require garter. During the fruiting period it does not fall apart, or bends slightly above the ground. Doesn't need pinching. With timely watering and basic care (feeding, mulching), it is resistant to diseases typical of tomatoes.

The average weight of the fruit is 150-200 g. The harvest is formed 100-105 days after emergence. The fruits are round, slightly flattened, with slight ribbing. Color – pink-red. The pulp is juicy, sweet and sour, medium density.

Danko

The variety was bred in 1998 and already in 2000 it was officially registered and recommended for cultivation in all regions of the country. Reviews about it are contradictory, but most gardeners and vegetable growers tend to consider this tomato one of the best.

Fruit ripening occurs 105-110 days after seed germination. The average weight of one tomato is 100-170 g. Individual fruits can gain up to 300 g. In view of this, although the plant is a standard one, additional garter may be required.

With a maximum height of 55 cm, the bush is weakly leafy and has medium branching. Thus, up to 4 plants can be planted per 1 sq.m. The highest yield can be achieved when the plant is formed into 2-3 stems.

Over the past 30 years, breeders have developed a large number of low-growing tomatoes with a short ripening period. They differ in fruit quality, yield and other parameters.

Among the early varieties of tomatoes, the harvest dates also vary. For some, from the moment of germination to the ripening of tomatoes, not even 80 days pass, while for others it takes 100-110 days. This allows gardeners and vegetable growers to choose the specimen that matches the cultivation conditions and expected results.

Super early and early

Varieties and hybrids that produce crops early will be the best choice for planting in the garden. Their diversity is amazing, and it’s not so easy to find the right tomato that will please you with a good result. Super-determinant tomatoes yield their crops very quickly, and thanks to this they also “escape” late blight. We recommend the following ultra-early ripening tomatoes:

Aphrodite

A super early variety of tomatoes, the first fruits can be harvested after 80 days.

Designed for growing in open beds, productive (up to 8 kg per 1 square meter), very tasty tomato. The fruits are round, with smooth glossy skin, red, weighing up to 115 grams.

Plant height is 45-50 cm, tomatoes do not need pinching, but supports for gartering the clusters are needed.

Bullfinch

This is an early bird, as the fruits ripen within 95-97 days. This unpretentious and cold-resistant variety is very popular in Siberia and the North-West.

Its bushes are up to half a meter high, the fruits are bright red, round, slightly flattened. Weight is up to 170-200 grams, and the taste of the fruit is excellent.

Labrador

Another early variety is Labrador, which begins to bear fruit already at 95-98 days. Its fruits are very dense, look like red apples, weighing up to 150 grams.

Tomatoes are picked green; they “arrive” very well at home. Suitable for all types of processing, as well as for preservation and, of course, fresh consumption.

Early love

An unpretentious and unpretentious tomato produces fruits weighing up to 200 grams. Ripening time is 90 days, with minimal plant care required. Does not require pinching, is very resistant to natural disasters, productive (up to 5-6 kg of fruit per square meter).

Bush height – 80-100 cm.

Don Juan

If you want to grow unusual, ultra-early tomatoes, then it’s time to look at the Don Juan tomato.

Ripening time is only 95 days, the fruits are round and slightly elongated. Weight – up to 80 grams. The color of the fruit is original - crimson with golden veins and strokes. This tomato is considered one of the most delicious among the early varieties.

Features of early varieties of tomatoes

Early-ripening tomato varieties not only produce their harvest first, but also usually cause less trouble:

  • finish fruiting before the massive development of late blight;
  • initially created more resistant to low temperatures;
  • early ripening tomatoes for the most part (not all) are low-growing determinate or standard, do not require pinching and gartering;
  • ultra-early tomatoes ripen quickly, making room for greens, lettuce, green beans, and other crops with a short growing season;
  • varieties that finish fruiting early do not need to be protected from heat in mid-summer;
  • are not affected by all typical pests - many insects, for example, the Colorado potato beetle, massively colonize nightshade crops after harvest.

Super early varieties of tomatoes are usually distinguished by a sweet and sour taste, insufficient sugar content and high liquid content in the fruit. These tomatoes are suitable for juice, but not everyone likes them when consumed fresh.

The small amount of sugar in early varieties is due to the fact that they receive less sun. This does not apply to cherry and cocktail tomatoes - they are sweet regardless of the time of ripening.

And although many believe that a real tomato must have a refreshing sourness, modern selection is aimed at increasing the sugar content of the fruit. Early varieties created in recent years are not inferior in taste to those ripening in the middle and late periods.
