Decorating a bed with unusual flowering - the Japanese Rose tomato and its advantages over other varieties

Japanese roses are special. Once you see them, it will be extremely difficult to forget this sight. The appearance and rich aroma of oriental beauties amazes. They are created to be admired, and the variety of varieties allows you to choose the ideal option for any site. But making a choice can be very difficult, because their beauty cannot leave anyone indifferent. Let's consider the most interesting and unusual varieties of roses of Japanese selection.

Rose variety Blue Moon Stone

This rose appeared thanks to the efforts of the Japanese breeder Junko Kawamoto in 2022. It belongs to scrubs. Its flowers fully possess the charm of antique roses. The bud is creamy with a slightly greenish tint and subsequently turns into an exquisite flower of delicate purple color with white areas, and the transition between colors is as smooth as possible. The flowers are not large, but there are 3-5 of them on each stem.

Due to the fact that the bush is highly branched, flowering is abundant and very long. The bush is up to 130 cm high, and it can be more than a meter wide. Rose Blue Moon Stone also has a fairly strong pleasant aroma. Overall, the rose looks very delicate and weightless.

Features of growing and caring for the plant

Camellia is a light-loving plant, but still it does not accept direct sunlight and requires shading in the summer. For the correct formation of the crown, the flower pot must periodically be turned towards the light with the side that needs the branches to grow.

During the flowering period, the rose should not be disturbed; it can shed already formed buds.

The flower requires regular watering with soft water, but only after the top of the soil has completely dried. It is better to drain the excess water, since waterlogging is undesirable and can lead to rotting of the root system.

In the process of caring for a plant, it is very important to create the most suitable temperature regime in the room individually for each season:

  • in summer, the temperature should not be higher than 22-25 degrees above zero
  • in spring and during the flowering period it is better to maintain the temperature within + 15-17C
  • in winter, the temperature should be + 10-15C

The rose is replanted in the usual way: there is drainage at the bottom, oxidized soil on top, always diluted with humus. If it is not diluted, the leaves will turn yellow and may fall off. The container should match the plant: for a small plant, the pot should also be small.

It is best to propagate Camellia by cuttings from semi-lignified shoots of the plant in the spring. After two years, the camellia will delight you with riotous flowering. You need to wear gloves when replanting and processing the flower, as it is poisonous.

Rose variety Uriel

This rose was bred by Junko Kawamoto back in 2008, but its popularity has not diminished since then. Rose Uriel is often called the "shining star", and this name suits her very well. Its buds have a delicate peach hue, and when the flower blooms, the hue becomes a more saturated apricot-yellow. Moreover, in the center the color is more pronounced, and closer to the edge of the petals it becomes very light.

The wavy petals make the picture even more bewitching, despite the not very large size of the flower (up to 8 cm). The bush is low, up to 90 cm, the stems are strong. The leaves are medium in size, with a beautiful glossy surface. They serve as a beautiful backdrop for delicate flowers.

Rose variety Couture Rose Tilia

This is the most delicate flower created by Junko Kawamoto in 2010. Despite the fact that the flowers have the simplest possible shape, they amaze with their beauty and are impossible to forget. Couture Rose Tilia flowers are painted in noble violet-lilac tones, and in the center there are multiple bright yellow stamens. The edges of the petals are carved, which looks very impressive.

The bush is up to 125 cm high, quite spreading and branched. During flowering, the entire bush is literally strewn with flowers, while the area is filled with a fresh, slightly sweet aroma emanating from this rose. Matte, rich green leaves serve as an excellent background for delicate flowers.

Japanese rose - "Camellia"

The Japanese rose "Camellia", which belongs to the tea family, is particularly decorative and has delicate, exquisite flowers. Japan is considered the birthplace of the plant; camellia also grows in nature in China, on the islands of Java and the Philippines. An evergreen shrub with dense glossy foliage and beautiful bright roses that fits well into any interior.

The plant is not picky and with minimal care pleases its admirers with the elegance of flowering.

Camellia leaves are dark green and oval in shape. Flowers are simple and double. Camellia flowers come in a variety of colors: white, pink, red and even yellow. Petals can be decorated with stripes, spots and stains of different shapes and colors. With their shape, camellia flowers can resemble a rose, peony, anemone or carnation.

Rose variety Cha Cha

This rose variety appeared in 2008 thanks to the work of Teranisi. Rose Cha Cha has several features. The first is its unusual color, it is coffee brown, with a reddish-terracotta tint. As the rose fades, its color becomes closer to light purple. The flowers are medium in size, up to 8 cm in diameter.

Another feature of this variety is that the flower has not one, but as many as 4-5 centers, which are twisted petals arranged in a circle. It looks very unusual. The flowers are located one at a time on the stem, so this variety is well suited for cutting. The bush itself is no more than 70 cm high, but quite branched. The Cha Cha rose has no aroma.

Reproduction methods

Japanese roses reproduce by seeds, since dividing the bush can lead to disruption of the integrity of the root and subsequently to the death of the entire plant. Cuttings of eustomas are contraindicated, since the cut part of the plant dies without taking root.

As for the seeds, they can be purchased at flower shops or extracted from their already faded buds.

Seed collection is carried out from November to February. The rose blooms after about 20 weeks of germination, which means that a plant planted in the spring will delight its owners with its flowering the following year.

Seeds can be planted in small plastic cups filled with moist peat soil, sand and a small amount of perlite. 4 seeds are not pressed deeply into each cup, lightly sprinkled and covered with a plastic bag or jar. After a month and a half, the plant is picked.

Conditions for seedling growth:

  • lighting (bright, diffused)
  • watering (only in dry soil)
  • picking (after 1-1.5 months)
  • fertilizing (if necessary)

If these conditions are met, the seedlings will sprout and be healthy.

Rose variety Corail gelee

An extremely bright and colorful rose whose rich coral petals literally glow from within in the sun. This rose, like most Japanese beauties, owes its appearance to Junko Kawamoto, and it happened in 2011. The flower itself is cup-shaped and decent in size, up to 10 cm. The many petals create the effect of airiness and incredible lightness, thanks to which, despite its rich color, the rose looks elegant.

The flowers are collected in brushes of 7-8 pieces each, so the flowering is long and very lush. The bush is vigorous, more than 150 cm in height. The shoots are densely leafy and erect, so the bush holds its shape well and can be shaped. Rose Coral Gili has a strong fruity aroma.

Gabriel rose variety

This rose was bred by Junko Kawamoto in 2008. Rose Gabriel has a very interesting color that cannot be described in one word. In the center its petals are lavender-ashy, and closer to the edges they acquire a silvery-white color. Depending on the weather, color saturation changes. The flowers are quite large, up to 8 cm in diameter.

The wavy petals also add charm to the flowers, as well as a rich sweet aroma, to notice which the rose does not have to fully open. It even comes from the buds. The bush is more than a meter high, well branched and leafy. Beautiful glossy leaves perfectly set off the unusual color of the Gabrielle rose.

Rose variety Saphiret

Rose Sapphire was created in 2016 by Junko Kawamoto. This hybrid tea rose attracts attention with its delicate cupped flowers. Its color is very difficult to describe. The flowers are white with a pink-lilac tint, as if powdered on top. The rose is very dense, consists of a large number of petals, they are slightly wavy along the edge, with a diameter of about 8 cm. The flowers are located on stems of 1-3 pieces.

The bush is neat and compact, no more than a meter high and about 50 cm wide. The leaves are medium sized, quite dark. This rose has a fairly strong sweet aroma with pronounced citrus notes, so it is simply impossible not to notice it in the garden.

Distinctive features

In nature, plants of the genus Eustoma (Gentianaceae family) are distributed mainly in the southern states of the USA, Mexico, the Isthmus of Panama, the northern part of South America, as well as on some islands of the Caribbean Sea. In America they are often called Texas bluebell, tulip gentian and prairie gentian. The plant reaches a height of approximately 60 cm, has simple, succulent green leaves with a bluish tint, large single funnel-shaped flowers with blue-colored petals, and very small, dusty seeds - 15 thousand seeds weigh about 1 gram.

For ease of sowing, foreign and domestic manufacturers of planting material produce seeds of hybrid varieties of eustomas, usually in granular form.

The original species is characterized by blue-blue color of flowers

Specialists from Japan and the USA have achieved significant success in the selection of eustomas. Today, many new varieties have been developed with white, yellow and red flowers of various shades, single-color and two-color, with different petal shapes and degrees of terry. Modern varieties of Japanese roses are in great demand in many countries around the world and are grown as cut flowers on an industrial scale. In Russia, their commercial popularity is not so high, but increasingly, flower shops offer customers lush bouquets of eustomes, as well as bright floral arrangements.

The value of these ornamental cut plants lies in a number of important features:

  • wide color palette of petals;
  • tall, durable peduncles that tolerate transportation well;
  • long-term preservation of freshness of flowers in a vase (about three weeks);
  • alternate opening of buds on cut stems placed in water.

To achieve re-blooming, plants are brought into a room with a temperature of +10...15 ℃ and moderate lighting for the winter, shoots are pruned, leaving at least 2 pairs of leaves, and minimal watering is provided

Japanese rose is perfect for decorating a personal plot or apartment. In the garden, it can be grown in open ground, as well as in containers (pots, flowerpots, tubs), which, with the onset of cold weather, are brought indoors, where the plants continue to bloom. Dwarf varieties are more suitable for apartments, which, thanks to their branched shoots, look like lush bouquets.

Previously, only specialists were engaged in cultivating Japanese roses, but now amateur gardeners are also keen on growing this beautifully flowering plant, which is considered quite demanding and capricious. One of the difficulties is the long growing season: seeds for seedlings must be sown between November and January so that the plant has time to bloom, but they are not buried in the soil, but left to germinate on the surface under film or glass. Eustoma needs bright lighting (for normal development, seedlings are recommended to be illuminated with a phytolamp), warmth (optimal air temperature 20...22 ℃), nutritious soil and good moisture. An important condition for abundant flowering is also the correct selection of varieties.

Rose variety Latte Art

This variety appeared in 2008 thanks to the Japanese breeder Takuhori Kimura. Just by the name of the rose one can assume that it has a rather unusual color. And this is true. Rose Latte Artime has a complex coffee color, which becomes a little richer in autumn, closer to brown. The center of the rose is darker, and the petals at the edges are a lighter shade.

In the center of the rose, the petals are unusually curled, and it may seem that it has several centers. The size of the flowers is decent, up to 9 cm. At the same time, its bush has quite compact dimensions, and reaches a height of no more than 80 cm. The leaves are medium-sized, dark green, with a glossy sheen. The aroma of Latte Art rose is barely perceptible.

Rose variety Eventail d'or

This variety was created in 2009 by Junko Kawamoto, a famous Japanese breeder. Translated, the name of this rose means “golden fan.” Her flowers really have a golden, sandy yellow hue. Moreover, on the outside they have a creamy color. The flowers are densely double, up to 8 cm in diameter, and are collected on shoots in racemes of up to 5 flowers. Thanks to this, the flowering is very lush.

The bush is quite powerful, up to 150 cm in height with many strong shoots. They are well leafy along the entire length. The leaves are large, dark green. Flowering occurs in waves with short breaks.

Rose variety Pinata

This rose variety appeared quite a long time ago, back in 1978, but its popularity remains at a fairly high level. The Piñata variety was developed by Seizo Suzuki. The flowers of this rose are round in shape, medium-sized, up to 7 cm, but very bright. Their color is very variable, they can be lemon yellow, garnet, bright orange and even with shades of pink. This is a real chameleon rose. Its color depends entirely on the conditions in which it grows.

Therefore, the Pinata rose may look different in different places on the site. Flowers are collected in large brushes, up to 15 pieces in each of them. Thanks to such an abundance of flowers, flowering is almost continuous throughout the season. The bush is very tall, more than 150 cm in height. The aroma is light, barely perceptible.

Caring for Kerria japonica

The shrub does not require care. For lush and abundant flowering, it is enough to regularly water it, fertilize it and cover it for the winter, if the climate in the region is quite harsh.

Watering and fertilizing

Kerria is a moisture-loving plant, however, stagnation of water has a bad effect on its root system. On hot summer days, the plant must be watered abundantly, but only after the top layer of soil has completely dried.

Feeding is necessary for the bush to restore strength after flowering. You should start fertilizing in mid-July and continue until October. A balanced composition for kerria is well-ripened compost with the addition of ash. Fertilizer is applied at the rate of 100-200 g per 1 m2. The interval is once every two weeks.

Pruning and shaping Japanese kerria

Pruning is carried out in order to create a beautiful bush shape, stimulate lush flowering and remove dead shoots. Time of application: early spring, before the buds begin to swell.

First of all, you should remove all dried branches. Then shorten all healthy shoots by a quarter of the total length. In the fall, after flowering has ended, it is also worth removing all dried branches and trimming healthy ones by only 2-3 cm.

Transfer

Replanting has virtually no effect on the condition of a healthy shrub; it tolerates it easily. You can move a Japanese rose to a new location at any time of the year, with the exception of winter and late autumn.

It is best to replant shrubs when there is no foliage: in spring or October.

It is necessary to dig around the bush around the perimeter, at a distance of 40-50 cm from the trunk. Then, without sudden movements, pull it out of the soil, place it in a new place, cover it with earth and compact it. Before transplantation, you need to carry out preparatory procedures similar to the initial planting.

Within a month after transplantation, the bush should be watered abundantly for better rooting.

Care after flowering

After flowering has finished, you will need to do the following:

  • remove all dried shoots;
  • cover the kerria for the winter if the climate in the region suggests a frosty winter.

Wintering Japanese kerria

It is worth starting preparations at the end of October-beginning of November. Shelter for the winter must be done in dry weather.

Technique for covering kerria for the winter:

  1. Gently bend the bush to the ground.
  2. Cover the top with dry bedding; high-density spunbond is best.
  3. Secure the structure with arcs of metal rods. They will hold the branches and prevent the snow mass from breaking them.
  4. Sprinkle plenty of dry leaves or sawdust on top and cover with a second layer of spunbond.

When making a shelter, it is important to ensure that all materials are dry and that the air inside is well ventilated. Otherwise, the bush is in danger of damping off.

In spring, the covering material must be removed on a cloudy day, when the night frosts have ended. It is better to open the plant gradually, over several days, covering the shoots with spunbond.

Kerria, which suffered from frost in winter, will recover with the arrival of warmth. But it won’t bloom this year.

Rose variety Sheherazade

This variety was created in 2013 by breeder Takuhori Kimura. The flowers of the Scheherazade rose are very large, up to 12 cm. They are collected in large inflorescences of 3-5 pieces. The flowers are very bright, pink-violet shades. Each flower consists of about 25 carved petals, which makes it light and weightless.

Despite the decent size of the flowers, the Scheherazade rose bush has a very modest size. Its height is no more than 90 cm and its width is about 60 cm. During flowering, the bush is literally strewn with flowers. Thanks to strong shoots, the flowers do not droop, but look up. Rose has a strong aroma.

Japanese roses are made to be admired. And you can do this for hours. They are incredibly fragile and delicate, regardless of the size and shape of the bush. They can quite rightly be called real works of art. And if there is not yet a single rose of Japanese selection on the site, this needs to be corrected immediately. Moreover, Japanese roses are very resistant to cold and various diseases, so growing them will not cause much trouble.

Diseases and pests

The Japanese rose variety is resistant to late blight and fusarium. Nevertheless, preventive treatment against bacterial damage and insect pests will not hurt tomatoes.

Before planting seedlings, the soil is treated with copper sulfate or a strong solution of potassium permanganate, which kill microbes. Treatment with Fitosporin prevents fungal infection.

If signs of phytosporosis disease are detected (brown spots and stripes on petioles and stems, gray-brown on fruits and leaves), the affected greens and tomatoes are removed, and the bushes are irrigated with copper sulfate.

Spraying helps fight spider mites, thrips, and whiteflies:

  • celandine decoction (400 g of fresh herbs, pour 1 liter of boiling water, leave for 24 hours);
  • infusion of onion peel (100 g of raw material, pour 5 liters of cold water, leave for 5-6 days);
  • insecticides "Tanrek", "Break", "Novaction", "Sirocco".

Ammonia is effective against slugs: dilute 500 ml of 10% solution in 2.5 liters of water and irrigate the bushes.

A solution of laundry soap helps destroy aphids. Grate 2 pieces of laundry or tar soap and pour in 2 liters of warm water, stir until completely dissolved and add another 8 liters of water. Spray the bushes with the mixture.
