Review of the best tomato varieties for the Volgograd region

Every year the same question arises: what tomatoes should I plant? This is considered a hot topic in the Volgograd region. Since the weather there is unstable and spring is cold. Many tomato varieties cannot withstand this climate.

But, don't worry. There are two hundred types of tomatoes in the Volgograd region. These selections also include hybrids. The main thing for tomatoes is taste, original shape and attractive color. Early ripening is not the main indicator; it has been proven that tasty and healthy fruits appear by the end of summer.

Tall tomatoes for the greenhouse

I definitely plant the listed varieties, but there are also some that I just liked, and I periodically grow them in the greenhouse, but I have not become a fan of them.
Of the indeterminates, I like the raceme varieties the most. Again, this is primarily because they look beautiful on the bush. There are only three varieties, and each has a special reason to grow it. “Intuition F1” is a mid-season hybrid, but I would classify it as a late-season hybrid. Not only does it reach harvest ripeness only by mid-August, but biological maturity also comes quite late. Some specimens of these tomatoes ripen even until the end of October. But, on the other hand, this is convenient because as a result, we have our own fresh tomatoes at home for a very long time. That's why I sow it in February.

Rice. 12. Photo from the end of July, but the fruits have not yet begun to ripen.

But “Intuition F1” is very easy. This hybrid is great for freezing for future use. In winter, I make pizza and frittata with them, as they do not defrost like porridge, but retain their meatiness well when cut.

Rice. 13. The fruits are all smooth and beautiful.

Rice. 14. In this form, I send “Intuition F1” to deep freeze.

“Scarlet Candles” is a cluster variety, mid-season. They don’t have a special taste, but what a shape! Looks impressive in preparations with cucumbers. However, this is why I grow them. It’s nice to admire such a jar later in the winter.

Rice. 15. The length of “Scarlet Candles” is almost like pickling cucumbers.

Rice. 16. “Scarlet candles” look neat, they all have a characteristic “spout”.

“De Barao” is quite late-ripening; I sow it earlier than the bulk of tomatoes. I really like it in preparations, it does not crack and is very tasty, both fresh and pickled.

Rice. 17. "De Barao" is resistant to disease. I always plant it on the north side, tying it above the entrance to the greenhouse, because it is very tall, and the upper tier ripens even in the last ten days of August, despite the first cold nights.

Rice. 18. The fruits are beautiful, all as one.

I have tried a great variety of salad varieties, I still want to find the most delicious one. Of the unusually colored tomatoes, I really like the taste of “Malachite Box” and “Black Prince”. Both are tall and require pinching, gartering, and formation into 1-2 stems, but the effort is worth it, the fruits are magnificent. “Black Prince” is dark burgundy when fully ripe.

Rice. 19. “Malachite box” in biological maturity – green.

Rice. 20. All these “Malachite Box” tomatoes are already ripe, although in appearance they seem unripe.

The yellow giants are not inferior in taste, of which the most fleshy and tasty for me are “Yellow Truffle” - of an unusual shape, “Persimmon” - indeed, the pulp is cut like the fruit of the same name, “Golden King” and sweet like a melon, “ Golden Bull." “Golden Heart” and “Altai Yellow” were less impressive. But it should be noted that the shelf life of yellow tomatoes is inferior to red ones. From salad reds, I grew “King of Large”, “Cardinal”, “Canary”, “Bear’s Paw”, “Mazarin”, “Altai Red”. What can I say about them - they are all equal, as if they were selected. It tires them to constantly tug and tie them up. One good thing is that they are large.

Rice. 21. Everyone looks the same on the bush. This is Cardinal.

Rice. 22. “Cardinal” is well kept.

Rice. 23. "Canaries".

Rice. 24. In the foreground is “Mazarin”. It differs only in shape, in taste - like all other red-fruited ones.

Rice. 25. “Altai Reds”, however, can be praised for their friendly maturation.

Separately, I would like to mention the pink-fruited tomatoes “Miracle of the Earth”. If you are lucky with the summer and it is not very hot, then you can get a good harvest from this variety.

Rice. 26. “Miracle of the Earth” are also tall.

But, if there is not very good ventilation in the greenhouse, then this variety will give a characteristic light yellow border, I don’t like it, and I cut it off before use.

Rice. 27. “Miracle of the Earth” - on the right. They are the same size as the Red Giant on the left.

Separately, it should be said about tall cherry tomatoes, for example, “Chio-chio-san”, “Sweet Cherry F1” and others. Yes, many of them are sweet, they look elegant both in the greenhouse and in pickles, but many of them are thrown away and require careful care. No matter how much I refuse to plant them, I still “break down”, I really want to admire the brushes.

Rice. 28. “Red date” is, of course, delicious.

Rice. 29. “Goldilocks” also tastes good if you resist and don’t eat it half-ripe - and it can be eaten even half-ripe.

Growing seedlings

Deadlines

Volgograd tomatoes have excellent seed germination.

The optimal period for planting seeds is the second ten days of March. If further cultivation of tomatoes in heated greenhouses is planned, the deadline can be shifted to the beginning of February.

Preparing soil and seeds

Before planting in the soil mixture for seeds, a number of preparatory manipulations should be carried out:

  1. Reject low quality specimens.
  2. Warm up at 30 °C for about 48 hours, then increase the temperature to 50 degrees and leave for another 72 hours.
  3. Soak for 30 seconds in a 1% solution of potassium permanganate, rinse in running water.

Additionally, planting containers are disinfected and drainage holes are made if these were not provided initially. Otherwise, the risk of rotting of the root system and infection with blackleg increases already at the first stage of growing tomatoes.

As a soil, use any universal one or one made independently from equal parts of peat and sand. The use of garden soil from the site requires calcining it in the oven in order to eliminate pathogens.

Sowing technology

Principle of seed placement:

  1. Bury the seeds into the soil by about 1 cm, maintaining a distance of at least 3 cm.
  2. Moisten with a spray bottle.
  3. Cover the container with polyethylene or glass, thus creating a greenhouse effect in the boxes.
  4. Remove the cover when seedlings appear.

Care

Watering the first shoots is done with great care, trying not to get it on fragile stems and avoiding excessive waterlogging. The temperature regime is periodically changed - young plants need to be hardened 3 days a week, which will increase their immunity. In total, the duration of such an event is 15 days.

In total, the duration of such an event is 15 days.

Additionally, they organize proper lighting; if there is a deficiency in insolation, the seedlings will stretch out. If there is a lack of natural light, fluorescent lamps are used, through which the daylight hours of plants are increased to 14 hours.

Picking

Picking seedlings is carried out if there are 2 true leaves, and weak specimens are rejected at the same time. During the procedure, the plants are placed in separate containers and buried down to the cotyledons. After 14 days, the first feeding is done.

How and when to transplant to a new place

Young growth becomes suitable for transportation to a permanent place after 45-60 days from the moment of emergence. A high-quality one reaches a height of 18-20 cm and has 8-10 leaves. If planting under cover is intended, the event is carried out in warm regions in early May, but not in the middle zone - in the second decade of the same month.

Distribute the seedlings into deep holes, between which a gap of 30-50 cm is maintained. First, each hole is generously shed, then the plants are placed right up to the leaves. To strengthen the root system, many gardeners advise cutting off the lower leaf plates and digging the tomatoes even deeper, as a result of which additional roots are formed on the stem. Also, when planting elongated specimens, it is recommended to immerse them in the ground at an angle.

Advantages and disadvantages of low-growing varieties

The main advantages of such varieties include:

  • fairly high yield;
  • bushes do not require special care, including gartering, pinching and shaping;
  • resistance to temporary cold snaps,
  • resistance to most diseases, including late blight;
  • early ripening of the crop in almost all varieties;
  • unusual shape, size and color of fruits;
  • more low-growing tomatoes can be planted on one square;
  • resistance to changing weather conditions and low temperatures.

These varieties have practically no disadvantages. It should only be noted that the yield of low-growing tomatoes is lower than that of ordinary tomatoes.

Recommendations for growing the variety

The Volgograd tomato is one of the most undemanding varieties. Knowledge of some features of agricultural technology will allow you to grow an abundant and tasty harvest on your site.

Seed

The period of planting Volgograd tomato seedlings lasts from February to April. Seeds of tall subspecies must be planted in February, and low-growing ones - in March.

It is important to calculate the time correctly: with very early planting, a lack of light and a long stay in a cramped container will negatively affect the development of plants. Tomato seeds

Tomato seeds

Sequencing:

  1. Before sowing into the ground, seeds must be sorted and those that are too small or damaged must be eliminated.
  2. To increase germination, leave the planting material in a manganese solution for 25-30 minutes.
  3. The nutritious soil required for planting can be purchased at a garden center or mixed independently from peat, humus and turf soil in equal proportions. Then pass the resulting substrate through a sieve and compact it tightly into the container.
  4. Place the seeds in the soil to a depth of 3-5 cm, at a distance of 3-4 cm.
  5. Spray the soil with a garden sprayer and cover the containers with film on top. The room temperature should be no less than 10 and no more than 20 oC.

When the first few leaves appear, the seedlings can be moved to larger containers for the growth of the root system.

Seedling

The seedling method is the most common for the Volgograd tomato:

To obtain a healthy and abundant harvest, it is important to prepare the planting site in advance, in late autumn. Dig up the soil, then fertilize it with humus and mineral complexes

In spring, dig up the soil again, this time with the addition of ammonium nitrate. Plant seedlings in deep enough holes to ensure normal development of the root system. Fill the seedlings up to the first leaves. It is not advisable to fill the hole completely with soil: it will be enough to dig it halfway for ease of watering.

Tomato seedlings After 2-3 days, the seedlings will begin to reach for sunlight: on especially hot days they need additional protection from direct rays to avoid burns.

Growing

Volgograd tomatoes are grown both in greenhouses and in open ground. Typically, such tomatoes are planted using the seedling method. In order to grow a good harvest, it is necessary to prepare a bed in advance, which is done in late autumn. The soil is dug up and fertilizer is added in the form of humus and minerals.

Ammonium nitrate is the best fertilizer for most cultivated plants

Before planting seeds for seedlings, they are soaked for two hours in a weak solution of potassium permanganate, and then washed with water. For sowing, take specially prepared soil, which can be purchased in specialized stores.

Wooden boxes are used for sowing seeds. The sowing depth should not be more than 2 cm, otherwise the sprouts will not be able to hatch. The distance between the seeds is 3 cm. Water the plantings with warm water and cover with film. The boxes are put in a dark and warm place. As soon as the shoots appear, and this happens after about a week, the film is removed and the containers with seedlings are placed in a bright place. If the weather is cloudy, seedlings will need artificial lighting.

After 5-7 strong leaves appear, the seedlings must be planted in separate pots.

Seeds are sown for seedlings, usually in March - April, depending on where the plants will be planted - in a greenhouse or open ground. The sowing time is chosen in accordance with the lunar sowing calendar for tomatoes.

In the open ground

Seedlings are planted in open ground 30-45 days after sprouts appear, as soon as the threat of night frosts has passed. Usually this happens in early June. In order for the plants to take root as much as possible, they are taken out into the open air in advance, every day increasing the duration of their stay on the street.

Seedlings begin to be grown at home in early spring

Seedlings are planted on the beds according to the 50x70 pattern, adding nitrogen-containing fertilizer to the prepared holes, as well as a handful of wood ash, which will protect them from rotting and saturate the soil with minerals.

It is recommended to mulch the soil around the roots of tomato bushes with sawdust to make them easier to care for.

Water the plants abundantly, once every 10 days, early in the morning or after sunset to prevent sunburn.

Care also includes planting tomatoes and feeding them. If a small number of ovaries form on the plants, they should be fed with urea. Also, to achieve high yields, organic fertilizers should be applied - last year's manure and compost.

The stepsons are removed early in the morning, leaving small shoots so that the branch does not grow again.

In greenhouses

Seedlings are planted in greenhouses according to the same scheme as in open ground, but a little earlier - in May. The principle of planting and care is the same. The only thing you need to do is open the greenhouse in hot weather so that the plants do not cook from the heat. Growing tomato seedlings at home is described in this material.

It is very important to ventilate the greenhouse, but you need to take into account that tomatoes do not like drafts

This is also done in order to provide access to tomato bushes for pollinating insects when the plants begin to bloom. Read more about

Watering under film cover is carried out somewhat more often - once every seven days.

Useful tips for gardeners

Tomatoes do not need high air humidity during fruiting, so the greenhouse must be ventilated in any weather, even cloudy. Optimal conditions for tomatoes:

  • soil moisture 70-80%;
  • air humidity 60%.

If soil moisture changes frequently, the growth of the root system stops, the plant does not receive enough nutrients, and this reduces immunity. Tomatoes are suffering from infection. Due to sudden changes in soil moisture, buds and ovaries fall off, and fruits crack.

It’s not difficult to avoid the problems listed above; it’s enough to properly organize the watering of tomatoes:

  • to prevent the seedlings from stretching out, they are not watered for 7 days after transplanting to a permanent place;
  • a week after transplanting, they begin to water abundantly and often;
  • When the first ovaries appear, the tomatoes are watered 2-3 times a week.

Water is poured at the root, watered early in the morning before the heat sets in. The greenhouse is ventilated so that condensation does not form on the ceiling and walls. Pathogens of tomato diseases can be contained in drops of moisture. Falling on tomato leaves, they can provoke an outbreak of fungal disease.

It is possible to grow a good crop of tomatoes without mineral fertilizers if the soil is fertile. You can’t do without them if she’s exhausted. Tomatoes begin to be fed 10 days after transplantation. The signal for feeding is pale leaves, thin stems. Feeding recipe:

  • water 5 buckets;
  • slurry 1 bucket;
  • superphosphate 20 g;
  • ash 30 g.

Solution consumption for 1 tomato bush is 0.5 l. The following feedings are carried out every 2 weeks, organic ones alternate with mineral ones. Recipe for fruiting tomatoes:

  • pour 2 liters of ash into a bucket;
  • pour boiling water;
  • insist;
  • strain;
  • increase the volume to 10 l;
  • pour in 1 bottle of iodine;
  • Dilute 15 g of boric acid in warm water, pour into a bucket, mix everything.

Before watering, dilute the resulting concentrate with water in a ratio of 1:10. Pour 1 liter of fertilizer under each tomato bush.

The varieties are not heat-resistant; it makes no sense to grow them in the south. The harvest will be minimal. When the air temperature rises above 32 °C, pollination will not occur and the ovaries will fall off. In order not to waste your time and energy, you need to buy tomato varieties recommended for cultivation in the North Caucasus region.

The best varieties for open ground

In hot weather, tomatoes undergo a physiological adaptation to overheating; their leaves curl. This is how plants protect themselves from moisture loss. At very high temperatures, their loss is compensated by fruits and leaves. The best varieties of tomatoes for the south of Russia are resistant to stress, solar radiation, and have good immunity.

In hot climates, it is easier to grow determinate varieties of tomatoes; their taste and yield are less affected by the heat. When choosing seeds, the ripening time and purpose are taken into account. Early varieties ripen in 80 days, bear fruit for a short time - 1.5-2 months.

Generosity

An early ripening variety for summer residents and farmers of the southern regions. Tomato Generosity is grown in open ground for fresh consumption and all types of processing. Productivity for low bushes (30-50 cm) is good - 7 kg/m². The following characteristics are highly appreciated by gardeners: keeping quality, transportability, resistance to verticillium and macrosporiosis.

Spring round dance

Tomato for open ground with bright red small tomatoes. The bushes are not tall (80-90 cm) and require minimal care. Stepchildren are not removed. The spring round dance is one of the first to ripen in the open ground.

ShapeColorTasteTomatoWeightFlatRoundRedHarmonious

To obtain an early harvest, seedlings are grown. Seedlings are planted in the ground at the age of 40-50 days according to a 30 * 40 cm pattern. Determinate-type bushes 80 cm high require garter. The variety loves feeding. The yield of tomato Spring Round Dance is 4.5 kg/m².

Verlioka plus F1

This is the successful work of domestic breeders, a new generation hybrid of early ripening. The plant is of a determinate type, the height of the bushes is 1.5 m, they are compact and take little time to form.

The productivity of Verlioka plus tomato is 10 kg/m². The fruits ripen together. They are beautiful, so there are no problems selling them on the market. The hybrid tolerates drought well and quickly adapts to temperature changes.

Irishka F1

The hybrid was bred for the North Caucasus region, and in 2005 it was included in the State Register. The harvest ripens early, 80-110 days pass from germination to the start of fruiting. Bushes of determinate type are 40-60 cm high; during fruiting, due to the abundance of fruits, they need support. The variety is resistant to tobacco mosaic virus.

Productivity depends on agricultural technology - 8-14 kg/m². Advantages of the hybrid Irishka F1: keeping quality, transportability, fruits do not wrinkle or crack during transportation, resistance to late blight, tobacco mosaic virus.

Anyuta F1

It’s worth starting the description with important characteristics: yield – 6 kg/m², ripening period 80 days, purpose of use:

  • summer salads;
  • winter salads and snacks;
  • canned food

The advantages of Anyuta F1 include stable immunity to the tobacco mosaic virus and late blight. The variety is grown for canning because the fruits have a strong skin, they look great in a jar, do not lose their shape and do not crack during heat treatment.

The bush is determinate, 60-70 cm high. 3-4 fruits are formed in the cluster.

Pink Andromeda

Heat-resistant variety for the North Caucasus region for salad purposes. In the State Register since 2008. Gardeners grow Pink Andromeda tomatoes in open ground. Determinate type bushes with a height of 60-80 cm tolerate dry periods well.

ShapeColorTasteWeightRound Raspberry, lightSweet and sour, harmonious

The yield of the variety is stable - 5-7 kg/m². In hot weather, when there is a lack of nutrients, plants drop their flowers. The variety is early ripening, the harvest ripens in 80-100 days.

Gold of Kuban

Successful work of Crimean breeders. The taste of the fruit is not affected by intense solar insolation. The variety is mid-season (110-130 days), practically does not get sick. Bushes of determinate type, grow up to 40 cm.

The Kuban Zoloto tomato is grown for whole-fruit canning and fresh consumption; the variety’s yield is low, but stable – 5 kg/m².

Krasnodar

A time-tested variety for summer residents and farmers. In the south it is grown without seedlings. Bushes of determinant type, low, standard - 50 cm.

The variety is pickling, mid-season. The fruits are canned and used to make juice. Productivity – 3.8 kg/m².

Story

The tomato variety Volgogradsky 323 dates back to the 60s of the 20th century. It was created by scientists from the Volgograd Experimental Station of the Institute of Plant Growing named after N.I. Vavilova. The variety was included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements in 1973. The application for its registration was submitted in 1969.

Additional Information. Volgograd tomatoes 323 are not the only creation of scientists from this region. Earlier, thanks to Volgograd selection, the Volgogradsky 5/95 variety appeared (included in the register in 1953). He's late. A little later, gardeners learned about a mid-season variety called Volgogradets tomato. Its year of inclusion in the register is 1989.

Characteristics of the variety

Most gardeners prefer proven varieties that have been grown for many years. One of them is the Volgograd tomato. It comes in different types, which differ in the speed of maturation.

Tomato Volgogradsky 5/95 is considered an old variety. But the Volgograd early ripening tomato 323 is almost equal to it in popularity and is characterized by similar parameters. Numerous reviews indicate that these varieties have a large number of positive qualities. Therefore, when choosing a crop to grow on your site, it is worth taking a closer look at these varieties.

The general characteristics of the variety indicate that this species belongs to the category of early ripening crops, since the harvest can be harvested a short time after planting in open ground. If you start growing by sowing seeds, then tomatoes of this variety produce a harvest within 105 days after germination.

Reviews from professional gardeners, as well as fans of gardening crops, indicate a large harvest. The bushes have a high level of compactness. Tomato Volgogradsky 5/95 belongs to the determinate type, its bushes are low.

The fruits have the following characteristics:

  • round form;
  • ripe tomatoes are flattened on the sides;
  • Almost all fruits have the same mass, the value of which reaches 90 g.

In the photo you can see that clusters with 7-9 tomatoes are formed on the bushes. This variety is classified as agricultural plants that have an average degree of resistance to various diseases.

Growing tomatoes allows you to use the harvested crop for the following purposes:

  • raw consumption;
  • use for making salads;
  • conservation;
  • pickling;
  • preparing tomato paste, sauce, puree, juice, gravy, etc.

Growing technology

The best predecessors for tomatoes are garden crops such as cucumber, zucchini, beans, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, leaf parsley and dill. The ridges should be prepared for winter by deep digging of the soil in late autumn with the addition of humus mixed with mineral complexes. After the snow mass melts, you should loosen the dried soil on the ridges and add ammonium nitrate.

The most convenient method of growing this vegetable is the seedling method. High-quality seedling material has a height of no more than 15-17 cm and about nine to ten true leaves. Planting in a permanent place is done after the soil has warmed up sufficiently well, and the threat of damage to the planted plants by returning spring frosts has passed.

The technology for caring for planted tomato seedlings is as follows:

  • Plants should be watered with warm water in the evening;
  • Avoid overdrying the soil or excessive moisture, which can cause various diseases of the vegetable crop;
  • after watering, it is recommended to loosen the soil shallowly, which will improve its air permeability;
  • it is necessary to periodically carry out pinching, forming a tomato bush into one or two shoots;
  • good results are achieved by fertilizing two or three times per season with complex mineral fertilizers, as well as organic matter in the form of mullein infusion or bird droppings;
  • tomato beds must be kept clean by systematically removing any weeds;
  • For preventive purposes, the above-ground parts of plants should be periodically sprayed with folk remedies that protect garden crops from disease or damage by the most common plant parasites.

The most popular varieties

Despite strong weather changes in the Volgograd region, tomatoes are still pleasing with their productivity. Such as Black Fig, Osiris, Aladdin's Lamp, Moscow Delicacy, Taimyr and the Volgograd variety is considered the star among all. But we'll talk about this variety later.

The Taimyr variety has unique tomatoes that are able to grow in the cold season. The fruits are small in shape, but sweet and strong. People jokingly call it "cherry". Due to the fact that the fruits grow in clusters.

Black Ethiopian is a prominent representative of “black” tomatoes. It is tasty and sweet, like all “black” tomatoes. But these are not all the unusual varieties that are grown in the Volgograd region. Chinese surprise, also called Green Sweet Tooth. The skin is green-yellow, the flesh is emerald green, tender. Aladdin's lamp resembles a pear and is bright orange in color; Spaghetti is similar to cucumber; The Lorraine beauty resembles a daisy when cut in half.

Yellow pepper - a specimen that looks like a pepper. It has few seeds and pulp inside, and the skin is dense. Therefore, it can be easily used for stuffing.

Breeders have proven that it is better not to grow early varieties in this area. There is no doubt that the plant will grow without being affected by diseases, but their harvest is small, and sometimes there is simply no harvest.

Recently, varieties of tomatoes have been developed that grow in the warm season; the fruits are sweet, medium in size and not affected by late blight. This disease often affects tomatoes and does not always lead to the death of the plant, but certainly to a decrease in yield. These include the Dream variety. It is hybrid and suitable for open ground. This is a late variety with good fruit set. They are fleshy, have few seeds, weighing an average of one hundred grams. The yield is good, at least three kilograms per bush.

This also includes the Yubileiny Ushakova variety. This is also a hybrid of two varieties - Cherry and Miracle of the Market. It is tall, climbing and best grown in greenhouses. Productivity is high, tomatoes ripen on the bush. Moreover, he is completely covered with them. The color of the tomatoes is bright red, but the size is small, about the size of a chicken yolk.

Tomatoes “Yubileiny Ushakova” are good, able to withstand cold and rainy weather, and do not succumb to late blight.

All of the above varieties of tomatoes are excellent for fresh consumption and for canning. They are also used for tomato juice, adjika and salads, which are sealed in jars. Varieties that have a small shape and bright color look interesting. You can create entire compositions in jars, as long as the hostess or owner has the imagination.

Characteristics and features of the variety

Frost resistance

Tomato Volgogradsky characteristics and description of the variety should begin with its frost resistance. The vegetable can be planted both in open and protected ground, but it does not tolerate spring frosts. The plant stops developing at +7…0 degrees. Summer cooling (up to +13…+17) does not frighten Volgograd growing in the open air. She can easily stand it. The same applies to heat.

Easily tolerates lack of rain and watering.

Cultivation of the crop takes place through seedlings that are grown at home. The variety can be planted with seeds in heated greenhouses (where at least +16 degrees) on high beds. Due to the fact that the variety is early, the seeds can be planted in open ground or a regular greenhouse at the end of May. The main thing is that the air temperature is not lower than +18…+22 degrees.

Productivity

Volgograd tomatoes 323 need 3.5 months to produce a harvest. This is an early variety. It takes about 100-108 days from full germination to the first ripe fruit. Approximately tomatoes can be served at the end of June, beginning of July. The variety is suitable for gardeners who do not want to wait long. According to reviews, the bushes do not bear fruit for a long time - about 15-25 days. In order to have fresh tomatoes before autumn, it is recommended to grow additional varieties of crops on the plot.

The yield is decent. The Volgograd tomato produces 5-7 kg of tomatoes per bush.

Bloom

The variety is early, so flowering occurs 20-25 days after planting in a permanent place or 80-85 after sowing seedlings. Lasts about 4-6 days.

The peculiarity of the variety is the huge number of yellow flowers. Flowering is going on smoothly. A peduncle is formed under almost every second leaf.

The best pollinators are bees. If the plant is in a greenhouse, then during flowering you need to open windows and doors. You can lure bees with sweet jam left in a cup near the door in the building. It is allowed to pollinate the bushes yourself. To do this, branches with flowers are gently shaken in the morning. You can use a thin stick to pry up the branches. This way the pollen will get to the pistil faster. After such manipulations, you can spray the flower stalks with water using a sprayer. This is done to secure pollination.

Plant parameters

The advantage of the plant is its compact size. The bushes are not large. There is no need to tie them to the support. The height of one plant is about 25-45 cm. It is determinate. Chunky. The stems are powerful. There are a lot of branches and leaves, but pinching is not required. The tomato itself regulates the formation of branches. They are not thickened. Air circulation between branches is excellent. Medium sized leaves. Their color is green. There are wrinkles.

The stems and leaves have stiff hairs. Hairiness is a distinctive feature of the variety. Summer residents also love these tomatoes because they can grow well both in the garden and in the apartment, on the windowsill.

The fruit is well formed

The inflorescences are simple. Each one produces 5 to 10 fruits. The first inflorescence can be seen above the 7th leaf. Each next one grows through one or two leaves.

The root system is developed and grows very wide. Because of this, it is recommended to plant bushes at a distance from each other - approximately at a distance of 60-70 cm.

Description of fruits

  • A pleasant feature of the variety is that almost all fruits growing on one branch are the same size;
  • The shape of the tomato is round, sometimes flat-round;
  • The tomato is even, smooth, without dents. Rarely, ribbed specimens are found;
  • Average weight – 74 grams. The lower tomatoes are larger than the upper ones. The lower ones can reach a mass of 80-95 grams;

Agricultural technology

Growing seedlings

It is recommended to sow seedlings 60-70 days before planting in a permanent place. The month of March is ideal. Depending on the climate, the summer resident himself decides when to do this business: at the beginning, middle or end of the month.

In central Russia (for example, in the Moscow region), seedlings begin to be planted on the 20th of March. Thus, by mid-May the bushes will already be stronger. Due to the fact that the variety is early, the seeds can be planted in open ground or a greenhouse at the end of May.

Soaking the seeds

The seeds are first soaked for several days in water or placed in damp gauze. Be sure to be treated with a manganese solution. The substrate for planting can be purchased at the store or formed independently.

The main thing is that the soil mixture is free of pathogenic microbes and pests. To do this, it is fried in the oven and treated with boiling water. The variety grows better in soil where there is a sufficient amount of humus, sand and fly ash.

The substrate is placed in containers, wooden boxes. Ideally, the container will have drainage holes. This way you can avoid waterlogging of the soil.

Before planting, the soil is moistened. The seeds are planted to a depth of 1-2 cm. The distance between them is 2-4 cm. Next, the box is covered with a bag. In such an environment, the seeds will germinate better. Shoots can be seen in 5-7 days. After they appear, the package is deleted. The box is placed on the windowsill, towards the light.

Important! Representatives of the variety have a strong root system. Its peculiarity is that it grows both in depth and in width. Therefore, Volgograd tomato seedlings need picking. Each bush is transplanted into a separate container as soon as it has 2 leaves.

Landing

The seedlings are transferred to a permanent location in May. It is best to prepare the bed in the fall. It is dug well and fertilized with organic matter. Holes are dug. They are placed at a distance of about 60-70 cm from each other.

The variety's roots grow well in width. Because of this, it is recommended to plant bushes at some distance from each other. This way they will receive the necessary nutrition in sufficient quantity. Before planting the bushes, the holes are well watered. Add a glass of ash to each.

Growing Volgograd tomato 323 involves simple care. The most necessary events:

  1. Watering;
  2. Application of fertilizers;
  3. Weeding;
  4. Loosening;
  5. Mulching;
  6. Prevention of diseases and pests.

Characteristics

The variety was developed thanks to work on crossing several varieties ("Local", "Bush Beefstek") by scientists at the Volgograd Experimental Station VIR. Registered in the State Register for the Central Black Earth and Lower Volga regions for cultivation in open ground in 1973. The most favorable regions for this variety will be the Central and Volgograd, Nizhnevolzhsky districts, but cultivation is possible throughout the Russian Federation and nearby countries.

The variety is universal, suitable for fresh consumption, salads, hot dishes, and freezing. The taste of tomatoes is sweet with minimal sourness characteristic of tomatoes. Tomatoes do not lose nutrients during hot processing. The sugar content in Volgogradsky early ripening 323 is about 4%. Canning and pickling of whole fruits goes well; due to their dense consistency, the tomatoes do not lose their shape in jars during long-term storage.

Suitable for the production of sauces, ketchups, tomato paste and juices. But the juice from this variety will be very thick. The yield of the variety is good, up to 8 kg per 1 sq. m. From one plant you can collect about 6 kg in a good season. The medium-sized fruits ripen almost simultaneously, have an excellent shape, and are suitable for sale.

You can compare the yield of this variety with others in the table below:

Black varieties

Did you know that black tomatoes appeared in the middle of the last century? They were obtained by crossing red fruits with wild ones.

These types are considered more beneficial than regular red tomatoes, as they have antioxidant properties. You can consider the following options:

  1. Black Moor is a mid-season tomato. The bush yields about 4-6 kg of tomatoes. The vegetable is good fresh or as an ingredient for preservation.
  2. Mid-season varieties include De Barao. The height of the stem can be up to one and a half meters. The plant requires staking. The shape of the vegetable is elongated. This is a disease-resistant variety.
  3. Chernomor belongs to the mid-early category. Gardeners remove up to 3.5 kg from a bush. Delicious vegetables are obtained in 120 days. The color of the tomatoes is brown-red. The fruits are of medium size.
  4. Negrotok is capable of producing up to four kg per bush. The fruits have black skin and reddish uniform pulp. These are sweet tomatoes used for salads.

Variety varieties

Among the Volgograd selection tomatoes there are several varieties. The early ripening variety 323 is considered the best.

Volgogradskie 5/95 tomatoes are somewhat different. This is also an early variety; 100 days are enough for the tomatoes to ripen. The weight of the fruit is 110 g, so its yield is higher - 2.5 kg per plant.

Volgograd pink has round, flattened fruits of a pleasant pink color. Their weight reaches 120–150 g. Very sweet, juicy, meaty. Used in dietary nutrition. In the Volgograd region and southern Russia it is grown in fields without shelter. In other regions you need to cover.

The Volgogradets tomato is a determinate variety, the height of the bush is 70 cm. The fruits weigh 60–90 g, are round in shape, and have mild ribbing. The taste is sweet, the fruits are fleshy, and transport well. The bushes suffer from late blight, fusarium, tobacco mosaic and other tomato diseases.

Pros and cons of the variety

Advantages

  • Early variety. Summer residents can try tomatoes already at the end of June, beginning of July. The Volgograd pink tomato variety has a similar ripening period;
  • The fruits are neat, even, compact, and of the same size. Average weight – 70 grams. Another variety of Volgograd selection, bred in 1989, has similar tomatoes - Volgogradets. The description of the Volgogradets tomato contains characteristics similar to Volgograd. For example, they are similar in terms of ripening, fruit color (scarlet color with an orange tint), determinate bushes, etc.;
  • Tomato Volgogradsky 323, like Watercolor, Asvon, Parodist, does not need to be tied to a support or pinned. The plant is not tall - about 25-45 cm;
  • Decent yield. 5-7 kg of tomatoes are removed from the bush. Another low-growing variety that has similar yields is Alaska;
  • Excellent transportability. Like the varieties Diana F1, Kubanochka F1, Belfast, Volgograd tomatoes can be transported over long distances by placing them in boxes in several layers;
  • Undemanding to watering. You need to water no more than once every 14 days. The varieties Gina and Kaspar F1 have similar characteristics;
  • The fruits ripen together. In this, Volgogradsky is similar to the Raisin tomato;
  • Resistant to common diseases: tobacco mosaic, fusarium, verticillium, brown spot. Volgogradets tomatoes and the Volzhsky variety have the same advantage.

Flaws

  • Like the Dachnik variety, the Volgograd tomato bears fruit for a short time. Approximately all the fruits can be collected in a few weeks;
  • Labor-intensive harvesting. Compact tomatoes are more difficult and take longer to harvest than large ones.

Volgograd early ripening tomato 323 is easy to grow. The variety is suitable for beginner gardeners. Caring for it is simple. It is recommended to water it infrequently; there is no need to tie it up or stake it. At the same time, tasty fruits will ripen in the first half of summer. Features of the region

The south of Russia is a huge territory, including territories and regions with different types of climate. Temperate continental, mountainous, subtropical - variations alternate with each other, with sudden changes in weather typical. Summers are long and hot, winters are humid, with frequent thaws and slight cold. The average temperature in winter, for example, according to indicators in the Krasnodar Territory, is about +7ºC, although it can be higher.

Tomatoes are grown everywhere, sowing seeds directly into open ground. Due to the specific climate, it is necessary to select varieties that are resistant to drought and high temperatures.

In areas with low rainfall, it is important to provide irrigation systems. Drip equipment is mainly used, which is economical and has the ability to deliver moisture only to the roots of plants.

Gardeners often grow tomatoes on ridges to retain moisture in the soil and avoid overheating of the plant's root system. Minimal tillage and no-moldboard plowing are practiced.

Super early Dutch tomatoes The climate in Holland is harsh. In July, the average daily temperature does not exceed 17 °C. Dutch breeders have developed many productive tomato varieties for protected soil. They can be grown in greenhouses...

For Volgograd early ripening 323, the seedling method of cultivation is preferable, although direct sowing in the ground is also allowed in the southern regions after the May holidays. Depending on climatic conditions, the summer resident himself decides where he will grow tomatoes - in open or protected ground.

Seed preparation

The seeds of the variety have almost 100% germination and do not require special pre-sowing preparation. You can speed up the germination process by soaking it in a gauze cloth moistened with a weak solution of potassium permanganate for 24 hours.

Container and soil

Any low and wide containers that you have on hand are suitable for sowing.

Tomatoes are demanding on fertility and water-air exchange in the soil. You can buy the substrate for sowing ready-made or prepare it yourself:

  • peat - 1 bucket;
  • humus - 2 buckets;
  • sand - 0.5 buckets.

Prepared seeds are sown in containers filled with moist soil to a depth of 1.5 cm, the distance between plants is 2-4 cm, between rows - 2 cm. The crops are covered with the same fertile soil and moistened again. The boxes are covered with film to create a greenhouse effect.

Optimal conditions for seed germination:

  • temperature 22-25 °C;
  • humidity 75%.

The timing of sowing seeds depends on the location of further cultivation of tomatoes:

  • for heated greenhouses - February;
  • for film greenhouses and greenhouses - the third ten days of March;
  • in open ground - 1-2 weeks of April.

Growing and care

Temperature for normal development of seedlings:

  • daytime - 15-20 °C;
  • night - 8-12 °C.

Like adult tomatoes, seedlings are fed. Fertilizing with complex mineral fertilizers once every 2 weeks (Kemira Lux, Mortar A) has worked well.

2 weeks before planting, the seedlings are hardened off. If tomatoes are grown in apartment conditions, then arrange through ventilation of the room. If possible, the plants are taken out onto the balcony. When the seedlings reach a height of 15-20 cm, they are planted in open ground.

Landing

Tomatoes Volgograd early ripening 323 are planted in a prepared bed.

Step-by-step planting technology:

  1. The holes are prepared deep and wide.
  2. Plants 20 cm in height are planted one at a time in a hole, at the bottom of which a handful of superphosphate is poured.
  3. Planting pattern: distance between plants - 40 cm, between rows - 50 cm.
  4. The soil is added to the first leaves on the trunk.
  5. A small ditch is created around each plant for quality watering.
  6. Water generously.

Tomato care measures:

Watering once every 10-15 days with settled water at room temperature. Excessive soil moisture can lead to fungal diseases and root rotting

It is important to water the plants generously and then wait a period of time until the soil dries out. Regular weeding as weeds grow. Loosening is combined with watering

Pinching of Volgograd early ripening 323 is not required. To increase the mass of fruits, you can remove each stepson up to 1 cluster. Shaping the bush. In determinate tomatoes, bushes are formed into 2-3 stems, removing excess shoots. The lower large leaves are also removed. Removal of stepsons is carried out in cloudy weather. Plants do not require staking. To obtain a high-quality harvest, regular feeding is important - once every 10 days. It is recommended to alternate organic and mineral fertilizers.

The variety has fixed resistance to late blight, anthracnose, cladosporiosis, blight and rot.

If the weather is damp in the summer, to prevent fungal diseases, the greenhouses are regularly ventilated, and the plantings are treated with copper preparations (copper sulfate, “HOM”).

To prepare the soil mixture, turf soil, sphagnum moss, sawdust and grain husks are used. It wouldn't hurt to add pine bark or peanut shells. Wooden boxes or individual peat pots are quite suitable as containers, as well as for any seedlings.

Seeds are placed in shallow holes at a distance of 3-4 cm from each other. After the first leaves appear, the seedlings are picked and planted in separate containers. Picking tomatoes has a positive effect on the root system: it strengthens, which gives the seedlings a good advantage when planted in the ground.

Seedlings do not need abundant watering; keeping the soil moist is enough.
