The Charoit potato variety was created by Leningrad breeding specialists and the Belogorka Agricultural Research Institute. They have been growing it since 2014. Potatoes are cultivated in almost all regions.
Potato Charoite
Farmers and gardeners in the Vologda region receive maximum yields. The variety is early, resistant to cold and daily temperature changes. What are the characteristics of potatoes? What kind of care does it require?
Characteristic
The very early variety “Charoit” ripens 50-60 days after the sprouts hatch. Medium sized bush, slightly spreading. If the plant blooms, the flowers are lilac.
Description of fruits
The tuber is oval with tiny eyes. The peel is light, yellowish in color. In cross section the fruit is light yellow. Each tuber weighs 100-150 grams.
8-14 tubers are formed on a potato bush. They are smooth and have good external characteristics, which makes it possible to grow potatoes for sale.
Usage
Table variety. Due to its average starch content (14-17%), it is used for all culinary purposes. Charoit potatoes make a delicious puree; the tubers can also be boiled, baked or stewed.
Description of the variety
The potato variety Charoit belongs to the early group of root crops. It takes 45 days for them to ripen, but gardeners most often leave potatoes in the ground to ripen.
In this case, the harvest is harvested after 55 days. The potatoes are tasty and starchy. The indicator in pulp is more than 17%. Culinary experts note the universal use of root vegetables:
- bush of medium height, not very spreading. When planting, it is recommended to leave 30 cm between seedlings. 60 cm is maintained between furrows. You can leave a larger distance to make it more convenient to care for the plants. The leaves are green, large, and the edges are wavy. The flowers are large with an anthocyanin tint;
- 15-18 tubers are collected from one bush. The largest weighs 145 g, the smallest 100 g;
- root vegetables have a round-oval shape. The peel and pulp are yellow;
- Charoit potatoes have good yields. In the Urals, Siberia, and the Far East, 321 kg per hundred square meters is collected. In the Black Earth Region and the Central region, the productivity of the variety is higher, up to 400 kg/hundred;
- The culture is resistant to cancer and nematode, but its immunity to mosaic and late blight is average. According to reviews from gardeners on forums, the Charoit variety rarely gets sick. In the first year of growing root crops from elite seeds, the plants are highly resistant to insects. The Colorado potato beetle, moth, and aphid do not land on it;
- potatoes are intended for quick use. Its shelf life is no more than 4-5 months.
Potato Charoite requires fertile soil. Despite the immunity to the nematode, when choosing a site it is necessary to follow the principles of crop rotation.
The Charoite variety is grown after cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkin, and after legumes. It is best to plant green manure, clover, and oats on the site. They are planted in the fall. Green manure improves the structure of the soil and normalizes the chemical composition.
The potato variety Charoit is resistant to nematodes, but if the area is infected, it is not recommended to use it. The soil is treated with Nematophagin. It is based on a predatory fungus that destroys nematodes. It is embedded in the ground to a depth of 40 cm. For 1 m2, 20 g are required. In case of severe infection, the rate is increased to 140 g. Plants can be planted in the next season. The fungus does not affect the roots and fruits of the crop.
Gardeners can get a good harvest if they properly prepare the soil for potatoes. Already in the fall, the site is cleared of old grass, tops and fruits. All vegetation, if it is not affected by fungus, is placed in a compost pit. The compost matures in it for 12 months. After this, it can be applied to the beds.

Improve the area for root crops with a fertile soil mixture of compost, 10 kg/m2, 5 kg of peat, 500 g of rotted manure, 300 g of ash. If the land is depleted, then the organic matter rate is doubled.
To prevent insects from leaving the soil, add “Nitrophoska”, 20 g/m2. The bed must be dug up and left until spring.
Mineral fertilizers are applied in the spring, before the area is harrowed. They are added according to certain standards. An excess of mineral elements can cause deformation of tubers, reduce plant immunity, and worsen taste characteristics.

Potassium salt requires 20-30 g/m2, superphosphate - 40-60 g/m2. If manure was not added in the fall, then ammonium nitrate or urea, 20 g/m2, is added in the spring.
Landing
Depending on the region, Charoit potatoes are planted in mid-to-late May. The bed is prepared in advance - dug up and enriched with manure and humus. Last year's small tubers are used as seed material.
Important! To improve yield, potatoes are germinated in a warm place before planting.
Planting is done in rows. The distance in the row between the holes is 30-40 cm. The holes are dug to the depth of a shovel. Complex fertilizer and a handful of ash are placed at the bottom, and 1 tuber is placed on top.
In dry summers, whenever possible, water the plantings. But, usually, there is enough rain for the normal development of potatoes. To obtain the largest possible tubers, the plantings must be weeded and hilled.
45 days after germination, they try to dig up the first bush. If the tubers are small, the plants are given another 10-20 days to develop.
Growing and care
Potatoes usually do not require watering, but during dry periods they are moistened several times a season:
- The first time - 1-2 weeks after germination, for the development of tops.
- Repeatedly - during the flowering period (this watering should be the most abundant).
- The third time is after flowering, as soon as the bush sheds its flowers.
Use warm water. It is necessary to spill the soil to a depth of 25 cm.
Feed 2-3 times. The first time - after the first watering, during the development of the tops, solutions of organic fertilizer (chicken droppings or humus) are added. Fresh manure cannot be used. Re-feed after the second watering, during the flowering period, with solutions of mineral potassium-phosphorus fertilizers.
Hill up the bushes 2-3 times per season before flowering. The first procedure is at a height of 5 cm. Repeat after 2 weeks. It is necessary to cover 2/3 of the plant with soil. The soil must be moist; if it is dry, hilling is not carried out.
Advantages and disadvantages
Potatoes can be grown in almost any garden. In order to choose the most suitable one from hundreds of varieties, you should objectively weigh all the pros and cons.
Advantages of the “Charoit” variety
- Early ripening;
- Abundant yield;
- Excellent taste properties;
- The harvest is stored for a long time;
- The fruits are smooth, medium in size;
- Small number of eyes;
- Versatility of use.
No deficiencies were identified in the variety.
How to plant?
Potatoes of the Charoit variety are planted at the end of April, if the soil has time to warm up to 6 C. In the northern regions, root crops are planted at the end of May. Seed material should consist only of healthy tubers. The smallest ones are chosen. Usually selection is carried out immediately after harvesting.
Root crops for sowing are stored separately. The optimal weight of seedlings is 50 g, but if the harvest consisted of large root crops, then cutting them is not recommended. According to gardeners, Charoite does not develop well when the integrity of the tuber is violated.
Before planting, root crops are left for vernalization. They are cleaned of dirt, treated with Fitosporin or sprinkled with ash. Potatoes are placed in a warm and bright room. The optimal temperature is 16 C. After 3 weeks, the following are planted:
- deepen the seedlings by 5-7 cm;
- Pre-pour 20 g of “Giant” fertilizer and 5 g of ash into the hole. You can replace the mineral complex with crushed eggshells, onion peels and pine flour;
- If the soil is prepared according to the rules, then nothing can be added to the hole. There are enough nutrients in the soil for potatoes;
- planting is carried out in moist soil. The seedlings are sprinkled.

No maintenance is required, but it is recommended to monitor the soil. If a dry crust has formed on the surface, then surface watering is required. The soil should not be loosened so as not to injure the seedlings. Mass shoots appear after 2 weeks.

I’m happy with these potatoes. We plant “Charoit” every year and invariably get an early and rich harvest. Our family has enough harvested vegetables until the end of spring. We store the bulk in the basement, and at home in the pantry (potatoes do not rot or become damp). The puree is tasty and not at all sticky.

I like this variety for its taste and versatility. I prepare different dishes - I boil, stew and bake potatoes, and they always behave well (they don’t get overcooked, they don’t stick together, etc.). I recommend it to all housewives!
Ultra-early potato variety “Charoit”: potato breakthrough
Text: V. Lebedeva, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences Sciences, Ved. scientific coll.; N. Gadzhiev, Ph.D. agricultural sciences, head Potato Department, Leningrad Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture "Belogorka"
For many Russians, potatoes are one of the main vegetables on the table. Its production volumes are growing annually, but the level of consumption still remains high. Therefore, cultivating this crop will always be a profitable and profitable business, and modern varieties will help achieve the highest yield and efficiency in growing potatoes. In the laboratory of genetic methods of potato breeding of the Leningrad Research Institute of Agriculture "Belogorka", with the joint work of scientists and specialists from a breeding company, a new ultra-early and high-yielding potato variety "Charoit" was created. It has beautiful tubers with excellent taste, and their marketability is high even when harvested early.
WILD ROOTS
The phytosanitary situation in areas where potato production is traditionally located has been constantly deteriorating in recent years. The harmfulness of most pathogens is increasing, and new, more virulent strains and races are appearing. For these reasons, when creating potato varieties that meet modern production requirements, breeders have to use wild species, whose resistance to pests and diseases developed during a long process of conjugate evolution. However, the inclusion of wild species in the breeding process often leads to an extension of the growing season. Hybrids are produced later than varieties used as cultivated parents. Deviation towards late ripening is not always desirable, since many areas of traditional potato growing are characterized by a relatively short growing season. In addition, when harvesting is carried out in rainy weather in the fall, crop losses increase significantly. For these reasons, today the most important direction in potato breeding is the creation of early ripening varieties
PORTRAIT OF THE VARIETY
Early ripeness, like most other economically valuable traits, is controlled by polygenes. Therefore, when carrying out inbreeding, accompanied by strict selection at all stages of selection, it is possible to isolate genotypes with a transgressive combination of polymer genes of total action, with a stronger expression of early ripening and other useful traits. This is how the “Charoit” variety was created. It was obtained with the participation of the species S.berthaultii, S.stoloniferum, S.demissum, S.andigenum, S.tuberosum. New potatoes are distinguished by very early ripening periods - they can produce a commercial harvest on the 60th day after planting. At the same time, it has a high percentage of marketability - it forms large, even, beautiful yellowish tubers with superficial eyes. Moreover, even after early harvesting, they have excellent taste. The variety is high-yielding - the harvest volume can reach 600 c/ha and above, it is flexible - it shows good results in both dry and wet years. After two years of testing, in 2014 it was zoned in the North-West zone of our country. Since 2015, it has also been distributed across the Northern, Central, Lower Volga, Ural and Western Siberian regions.
On the experimental field, when comparing different varieties of the early group over the past three years, the “Charoit” variety showed the best results among the rest of the test subjects. Experiments have shown that these potatoes can be used to obtain two harvests in one season, even in the conditions of the North-West zone.
