What tomatoes are popular in the Moscow region?

According to reviews from gardeners, the following varieties of tomatoes for the Moscow region can be distinguished:

  1. The Alenka hybrid is valued for its excellent taste, early fruiting - 90 days after germination. And the yields are 14 kilograms of medium-sized tomatoes per square meter.
  2. The Mongolian dwarf variety, an unpretentious plant, has a bush no more than half a meter high, but produces fruits weighing three hundred grams.
  3. White filling tomatoes are not afraid of frost, they do not require pinching or constructing supports for tying.
  4. Medok delights with fruits similar to plums. In addition, the tomatoes of this variety are fleshy and sweet.
  5. Among ribbed tomatoes, the best varieties of tomatoes are Lorraine beauty. The fruits of the vegetable in cross-section are similar to chrysanthemums. From one plant you can harvest up to ten tomatoes in open ground, each weighing half a kilogram. They note the rich red color of the fruits and their pleasant taste, with a sufficient amount of sugar.

Summer residents and farmers plant both low-growing and tall tomato bushes on their plots. Depending on the quality of the seed material and the timing of sowing, early and high tomato yields are obtained.

Boni MM

An unpretentious, ultra-early variety is not susceptible to late blight infection; the tomato grows remarkably and ripens quickly in open ground, requires minimal pinching and responds well to the removal of the lower leaves. The bushes are compact: you can plant up to 8 plants per 1 sq.m. The fruits are relatively small, not very dense, with thin skin and are often used fresh for food. Specifics of cultivation and selection of tomato varieties for the Moscow region

In the middle zone, tomatoes are grown both in open ground and under shelters (in greenhouses, as well as in greenhouses made of polycarbonate, glass or film). Cultivation of heat-loving plants involves the use of seedlings. Tomato seeds are sown in seedling boxes or peat pots. After 7-10 days, seedlings appear, which are then kept indoors, providing the temperature and humidity necessary for their development, watering and periodically feeding. In the phase of 5-6 true leaves, young plants are transplanted into individual containers to ensure uniform development of their underground and above-ground parts. Bushes that have reached the age of 60-75 days are planted on the site. Detailed descriptions of the process of growing seedlings with step-by-step photos are easy to find on the Internet.

When selecting tomato varieties for the Moscow region for open ground, it is necessary to give preference to varieties that are less likely than others to “stretch out” during the period of growing seedlings

If the seeds are sown in late February - early March, the time for planting seedlings in a permanent place is mid-May. The difficulty lies in the fact that frosts are not uncommon in the Moscow region at this time. Gardeners trying to wait out unfavorable conditions are faced with the need to transport and plant seedlings that are too mature (“overgrown” or “stretched”). Such bushes then take a long time to adapt to new conditions and get sick, which has a bad effect on the harvest. When selecting a variety, it is necessary to take this circumstance into account and give preference to varieties that are less likely than others to “stretch out” during the period of growing seedlings. This feature is possessed, for example, by the varieties “Moskvich”, “Yuryevsky”, “Petrusha-ogorodnik”, as well as the hybrids “Benito F1” and “Raspberry ringing F1”.

Overgrown seedlings are difficult to transport and plant, but this does not mean that the work of growing them will necessarily be in vain. Plants can still be saved, and you can even get a decent harvest from them. The gardener will be helped by a remarkable property of tomatoes - the ability to form new roots on almost any part of the stem. If you were unable to plant tomato seedlings on time, do not be upset. Each plant must be carefully removed from the container, being careful not to injure the root system, and planted in the garden bed in a long groove, placing most of the stem at an angle and covering it with soil. With good watering, the bush will quickly grow additional roots and not only will not suffer, but will even grow stronger due to a significant increase in the feeding area.

Our recommendations are addressed to those gardeners who grow tomatoes on their own. Meanwhile, many retail chains offer ready-made tomato seedlings every spring. This kind of product can also be found from private sellers. There is no doubt that purchasing seedlings greatly facilitates the process of cultivating tomatoes. There is no need to fuss with seedlings, provide them with lighting, fertilizing and watering, or worry about “hardening off” young plants. Unfortunately, this approach also has a significant drawback: according to reviews from experienced summer residents, sellers are not too concerned about ensuring that buyers receive seedlings of exactly the varieties they are counting on. Simply put, in this business, deception and mis-grading are the rule rather than the exception. If you decide to purchase ready-made seedlings, contact only reliable suppliers.

An equally important selection parameter is the early maturity of tomatoes. In the Moscow region, autumn weather arrives quite early. Already in mid-August the nights become cool and heavy dew falls. An optimal regime is created for the development of the most unpleasant tomato disease - late blight. This means that tomatoes need to be selected so that by this time they have already formed the bulk of the harvest. The earliest varieties are well suited for this (varieties “White filling 241”, “Casper”, “Leader”). Of course, there are hybrids and varieties of tomatoes for the Moscow region that are resistant to late blight (“Magnus F1”, “Lazy Man’s Dream”, etc.), but there are not many of them. In addition, this feature does not provide absolute protection and does not relieve the site owner from taking all preventive measures that reduce the risk of plant infection.

Of course, there are varieties of tomatoes that are resistant to late blight, but this does not relieve the owner of the site from taking all preventive measures to reduce the risk of plant infection

Changes in the weather near Moscow are largely unpredictable. For example, every few years there is a drought that can destroy the entire tomato crop. If you do not live in the country all the time, it makes sense to give up growing large-fruited tomatoes. The fact is that during the ripening period they urgently need water and require daily watering. Select varieties that produce medium-sized fruits (such as De Barao, Moskvich or Kasper) - they are less capricious.

Of the variety of tomato varieties, low-growing plants (so-called super-determinate) are well suited for the Moscow region, forming strong bushes that do not need support and are not afraid of strong winds. Many of them bring a good harvest of tasty, beautiful fruits (for example, the varieties “Jolly Dwarf”, “Florida Petit”, “Northern Baby”, etc.). Some indeterminate cherry tomatoes (such as the Cherry Kira F1 hybrid) are also quite resistant to the vagaries of the weather, but they are still best grown in protected soil.

The choice of varieties for growing in a greenhouse or hotbed may not be limited to tomatoes bred specifically for the Moscow region, the middle zone or more northern regions

The choice of varieties for growing in a greenhouse or hotbed may not be limited to tomatoes bred specifically for the middle zone or more northern regions. In a shelter, it is easy to maintain conditions under which large-fruited tomatoes, indeterminate plants, and varieties with exotic fruit shapes or colors will develop and bear fruit normally. However, in open ground in the Moscow region it is worth cultivating not only forms zoned in this particular region, but also plants recommended for cultivation in other zones of the country with similar climatic conditions. Among the indeterminate varieties, we can recommend the productive and relatively unpretentious “De Barao”, “Honey Spas”, “Peremoga 165”, “Peach” and “Gypsy”, which in a successful summer are capable of producing a decent harvest both in protected and open ground .

Features of cultivation and care

Standard varieties of tomatoes are sown 2 months before planting at a permanent growing site. The composition of the soil and the process of caring for seedlings are the same as for ordinary tomatoes.

Seedlings can easily be transplanted into garden beds due to their small roots. Depending on the size of the variety, seedlings are placed at intervals of 15-30 cm. There is no need to tie the stems to supports.

Standard dwarf tomatoes can be grown in pots, placing them on the windowsill. If you install lighting and properly care for the bushes, you can get fresh fruits from the plants all year round.

Agricultural technology for low-growing tomatoes is simple. There is no need to remove lateral shoots from the stems or pinch the growing point. Care consists of watering and fertilizing the plantings.

When the crop ripens, the stems may fall to the ground under the weight of the fruit. To prevent tomatoes from getting dirty and rotting, the soil is mulched with a layer of straw, tree bark or black agrofibre. Mulch protects the soil from overheating and drying out.

Standard tomatoes are watered more often than regular varieties, but little by little. The root system of plants is located superficially, so they cannot tolerate prolonged drought. The standard watering scheme is once every 2 days, 1-1.5 liters per root. In closed ground, it is recommended to install drip irrigation; such an irrigation system is ideal for this group of tomatoes.

The plantings are fed 3-4 times per season, selecting balanced fertilizer compositions (Fertika, Hera, OMU, Agricola). Among the folk remedies that are very popular are: infusions of manure and weeds, ash, and yeast fertilizer.

Standard tomatoes are practically not affected by diseases. In unfavorable weather conditions, the rainy season prevents late blight by spraying seedlings with Fitosporin, an aqueous solution of whey.

Far North

The Far North tomato is a cold-resistant variety that can easily tolerate low temperatures and at the same time produce an excellent harvest. The variety has increased resistance to common nightshade diseases. The bush is compact: up to six plants can be planted per 1 sq.m. The fruits are round in shape, medium density, deep red in color. They ripen together and are excellent for fresh consumption and processing.

The best determinants for the area

Tall tomatoes are rarely grown in unprotected soil, but they produce large and tasty fruits that are good for fresh consumption.

The best varieties for the Moscow region are represented by the following tall tomatoes:

  1. The Paradise Delight tomato bushes boast large fruits weighing four hundred grams each, with sweet pulp. The height of the stem reaches more than a meter. The variety belongs to the mid-season species, bearing the first fruits 125 days after germination. The yield is four kilograms per plant. Lightly ribbed tomatoes are bright red in color, universal in purpose, and do not crack. The juice made from them is very tasty. The variety is resistant to common vegetable diseases.
  2. The Bull's Heart bush often reaches a height of up to one and a half meters. The tomatoes on it are large and can be either red, yellow or orange. There are also black fruits. All of them weigh five hundred grams. The variety is grown following all the rules of tomato agricultural technology.
  3. Hybrid Winter Cherry tomatoes reach a weight of thirty to forty grams. They are located on bushes over a meter high. Unripe tomatoes are green in color with a dark spot near the stalk. Ripeness is determined by the red color of the round fruit. About four kilograms of cherry tomatoes are harvested from one bush.
  4. The best varieties of tomatoes are represented by such a plant as the Japanese truffle. There are several varieties of indeterminate - red, yellow and black. The name of the variety was chosen based on the shape of the fruit, which resembles a truffle mushroom in appearance. A powerful-looking bush requires the procedure of removing lateral stepsons and tying them to pegs. But the yield of the vegetable is high - from one plant you can collect up to eight kilograms of fruit weighing one hundred and fifty to two hundred grams.
  5. The early-ripening hybrid Overture NK is famous for its fleshy tomatoes weighing 120-130 grams. They form a bush reaching a height of 180 centimeters, with one or two stems.
  6. The Wild Rose tomato grows super tall, up to more than two meters. Without gartering and pinching, the fruiting of the variety will be insignificant. In good conditions, it produces high yields of raspberry-colored fruit weighing four hundred grams.

All indeterminate species, which include varieties of tomatoes for open ground in the Moscow region, are helped to safely reach the fruiting period by proper, competent care. If they are not hybrids, then you can take seeds from your favorite tomatoes for planting next summer.

Kobzar

This variety is not very productive, but it is stable and does not depend on weather conditions. Due to the early and friendly ripening of medium-sized fruits, plants manage to avoid the attack of late blight. Almost round tomatoes with thick skin are convenient to preserve - they hold their shape perfectly and look beautiful, and everyone who eats them fresh will appreciate their bright taste and rich aroma.

Varieties of tomatoes for open ground for the Moscow region

Without shelter, in the gardens of the Moscow region, mainly low-growing varieties of tomatoes are cultivated, which do not have a tendency to thicken the bush. Preference is given to varieties with early and mid-term harvest ripening. Late tomatoes do not have time to ripen before the arrival of persistent cold weather, and are also highly susceptible to late blight.

Popular varieties

Over the years of growing tomatoes, gardeners have already grown to love some varieties and willingly recommend them to their friends, acquaintances, and neighbors.

Bull's heart

A tall bush with large fruits, making it possible to harvest large harvests even in the Moscow region. The weight of the tomato is 0.5 kg; at the stage of technical ripeness it turns red, yellow, orange or black. A tomato bush up to 1.5 m tall needs timely staking.

De Barao

The variety is recommended for cultivation in protected soil conditions. Fruit harvesting begins in August and continues until frost. The height of a tomato bush sometimes exceeds 2 m. The tomato exhibits increased resistance to fungal diseases. The oval fruits, when ripe, turn classic red, orange, black and yellow. Their weight is no more than 90 g. During the season, each bush produces up to 4 kg of tomatoes with excellent taste and marketability.

Koenigsberg

Initially, the variety was bred for cultivation in the harsh climate of Siberia, but in the gardens of the Moscow region it also showed excellent results. The tomato bears fruit abundantly, the tomatoes grow tasty, nutritious, and when ripe they acquire a red color. The plant tolerates dry weather, temperature changes, and is little susceptible to pests and pathogens.

Puzata hut

The tomato is distinguished by its productivity, unusual shape of fruits, high content of sugars and beneficial microelements. When ripe they acquire a beautiful red-orange color. The harvested crop is perfectly stored and transported. The tomato is resistant to diseases, but requires obligatory staking and shaping, and also places high demands on soil fertility.

Cio-chio-san

Tomatoes of this variety exceed 2 m in height, therefore they need timely gartering and installation of supports. Productivity indicators are at a high level; the tomato produces about 60 fruits on each bush. The taste characteristics of ripe fruits are excellent. They resemble cream in shape and are pink when ripe. The crop has a universal purpose.

Yablonka Russia

Standard determinate tomato with early ripening. Does not require mandatory gartering and removal of stepsons. The plant is drought-resistant and has increased resistance to major diseases. Tomatoes are used for storage and transportation; when ripe, they acquire a red color. The fruit weighs up to 100 g, and up to 100 pieces are harvested from each bush. The harvest lasts from early August until the onset of frost.

Resistant to late blight

An important characteristic of tomatoes recommended by experts for cultivation in the Moscow region is their resistance to late blight. Breeders annually present several varieties with improved characteristics and excellent immunity to fungal diseases.

Fitous

The variety is distinguished not only by its excellent resistance to viruses and infections, but also by its juicy, sweet fruits. Tomatoes belong to the well-known cherry variety; fruiting lasts until the first frost. One bush produces up to 12 kg of fruit per season.

Demidov

The maximum height of tomatoes of this variety is 0.6 m. They not only have increased resistance to late blight, but also tolerate temperature changes well. The weight of the fruit ranges from 80 to 120 g; about 12 kg of crop is harvested per square meter. The plant does not have any serious requirements for cultivation or care. Tomatoes are often picked unripe and stored in a dark, cool room.

Sanka

The variety deserves attention not only because of its good immunity and unpretentiousness, but also because of the excellent taste of the fruits, which contain an increased amount of nutrients. The tomato is low-growing with ultra-early ripening. About 3.5 kg of tomatoes are harvested from each bush, and they ripen smoothly.

The hybrid does not require special care and does not require pinching. The yield of the harvest occurs amicably. The taste is at a high level. The weight of one tomato ranges from 130 to 150 g. The yield is high. The fruits are actively used for fresh eating and preservation.

Flame Agro

Determinate, low-growing variety, suitable for both open ground and greenhouse cultivation. The fruits are bright red, round, with a pleasant taste and aroma. The plant tolerates lack of light and low temperatures well, and due to early ripening it does not suffer from late blight. Like all standard tomatoes, it does not require pinching or pinching.

General characteristics and advantages of standard tomato crops

Standard tomatoes differ from regular tomatoes in that when the bush reaches a certain height, their growth stops. People also call them stunted. Up to 6 clusters can form on one bush (5-8 fruits are tied on one). Outwardly, they resemble small trees. Standard tomatoes for open ground can be grown not only in the garden, but also in a greenhouse or on a balcony.

The popularity of standard species is due not only to their low growth, but also to their small root system. They are not fussy in their care, and even if you are not very attentive to the crop, a rich harvest is guaranteed. The simultaneous ripening of fruits makes it possible to sell tomatoes in large quantities or make mass preparations for the winter.

The main advantages of determinate tomatoes:

  • lack of fully developing stepchildren;
  • a strong and low trunk that does not need to be tied or supported;
  • the location of the roots of the plant in the upper layers of the earth allows it to be saturated with moisture and fertilizers in the required quantities;
  • small sizes make it possible to plant more bushes and, accordingly, collect more fruits;
  • resistance to negative climatic factors: sudden changes in temperature, sudden frosts, drought, changes in soil moisture;
  • formation of even fruits.

If you give preference to early ripening standard tomatoes, they can be transported over long distances without losing their external and taste qualities.
Despite the many advantages, this type of tomato is not without its disadvantages. One of them is slow growth when sowing seeds in the ground.

Ranetochka

The Ranetochka variety is good because it bears fruit equally well in a variety of weather conditions. Compact bushes are formed into several stems, on which the fruits simultaneously ripen. This massive ripening makes this variety of tomatoes suitable for canning.

Ripening occurs 110 days after emergence. The fruits are yellow, average weight is 600 grams. The pulp is incredibly tasty. Productivity – 13 kilograms per square meter.

Shuttle

This variety is a little more capricious than its counterparts, and the fruits ripen later. However, if you feed the bushes in a timely manner and remove the lower leaves, then from July to August they will delight you with an abundance of elongated oval fruits with juicy pulp. Shuttle tomatoes store well, they are good in salads, as well as in canning (including whole fruit).

What is it: advantages and characteristics of standard varieties

The abundance of standard tomato varieties is amazing

Standard varieties of tomatoes are also called determinate varieties. This means that their growth is limited: after the formation of 5-6 brushes, it stops. Tomatoes are compact bushes, the height of which is limited to 50-70-100 cm. Against the background of friendly yield of fruits, they are characterized by moderate yield.

Characterized by:

  • versatility: able to grow in open and protected ground;
  • early ripening: varieties are sown later than others, while an early harvest is guaranteed;
  • stocky: thick stem and moderate volume of green mass;
  • compactness of bushes;
  • lack of branching (no need for pinching);
  • limited growth, which is determined by varietal characteristics.
