Since going to your favorite dacha this year has been postponed due to quarantine, and you have firmly decided to start growing seedlings, then we will grow tomatoes on the balcony. Are you with us?
The balcony can be used for different purposes - as a flower garden or a warehouse for unnecessary household utensils. But it can also be used more practically, for example, as a small vegetable garden where you can grow tomatoes in winter and summer. Such a home greenhouse pleases the eye, filters the air, and pampers you with fruits.
Why grow tomatoes on the balcony
There are many reasons to grow tomatoes on the balcony. Firstly, it is a new and interesting experience. You won’t surprise anyone with tomatoes grown on the plot, but harvesting from the balcony is unusual. By planting tomatoes next to low-growing flowers, you can create creative beds without leaving your home.
Secondly, balcony tomatoes are in no way inferior in vitamin content to their greenhouse relatives. Having grown them, you don’t have to run to the store or market for vegetables to enjoy a fresh salad for dinner. You can pick them right in your apartment, it’s amazing, isn’t it?
Well, and thirdly, does a real gardener need to keep himself busy in the off-season? So why not try an unusual experiment. All that remains is to choose the varieties.
What should balcony tomatoes be like?
When choosing not one, but several varieties of tomatoes for your home, you should place them away from each other to avoid possible cross-pollination. It will only reduce the taste of the crop.
To grow at home, you should choose tomatoes that have the following characteristics:
- rapid ripening in the period from 75 to 100 days;
- compactness and short stature (due to ease of gartering and trimming);
- parthenocarpicity (self-pollinating);
- taste;
- resistance to fungal attack (on loggias and balconies there is a high probability of this disease occurring due to high humidity);
- a small root system that can easily fit in planting boxes.

I planted yellow “Balcony miracle Balcony Elo F1”. Very compact bushes, no more than 25 cm in height, but so prolific! They ripened quite quickly, the tomatoes were all even, small, and tasty. The marinating went well. The whole family is delighted. I will continue to plant this variety.

Grown in a greenhouse. The bushes are low, there are a lot of fruits. The taste is good, not spicy. Despite the cold, rainy summer, I did not get sick. I will plant next year.

I think that the reviews about the Balcony Miracle tomato variety are completely fair. Fresh tomatoes from your balcony for New Year are much better than plastic ones from the store. I have been growing different varieties of tomatoes for several years now. It happened, in the first years I made mistakes, then froze, then burned. Everything is fine now. For New Year's salad from fresh tomatoes, I prefer “Balcony Miracle”. My balcony tomatoes taste similar to Cherry tomatoes, but are larger in size and easier to cut. Balcony tomato bushes bear fruit all winter.

Why not believe? I grew on the balcony in pots no more than 3 liters. They really grew no higher than 30 cm, all covered in sweet tomatoes.

I live in an apartment and I always wanted to grow something on my balcony, I thought for a very long time about what exactly. The seed store recommended this miracle to me! The seeds sprouted quickly because I covered them with a bag, then they planted them in pots and waited for a miracle. Soon they bloomed and appeared like button tomatoes. And in a pot where there was one root, the fruits were larger than where there were two. Very sweet, the whole family liked them. I read that you can plant them for the winter, so I’ll try planting them on the windowsill.

This year I decided to try planting cherry tomatoes on the balcony. I bought tomato seeds Balcony Miracle. I sowed 6 seedlings in March. I transplanted the seedlings into three liter pots. The bushes are low-growing with a thick stem. They have already begun to bloom. The variety is early ripening, 90 days from germination. I think in a month I’ll try the first harvest. Last year I sowed a regular variety in June; it grew very large, but with the onset of cold weather it froze on the balcony. But there were a few tomatoes.
I think that it was possible to sow the seedlings a little earlier in February, they would have already ripened. Please your kids with organic tomatoes.

For several years now I have been buying “Balcony Miracle” tomato seeds, but I haven’t paid much attention to the manufacturer, they are probably always different. I bought these this year.
I like these tomatoes, I just use them for food, so to speak, I eat them whole, for pickling, and freeze them to add to pizza or other dishes in the winter. They have a very convenient small size! Almost like cherry tomatoes, but a little larger.
I have never grown them on the balcony or indoors. I plant them through seedlings and then plant them in open ground at the dacha, it tastes better, they get warm under the sun, breathe in the air and that’s why they turn out so tasty.
I planted the seeds around March, just like it says on the seed packet. There were quite a lot of seeds in the package, maybe 30, but not all of them sprouted. How do I plant seeds?
I take a small jar, pour a little water, pour out all the seeds and wait until they germinate, and only then I start planting them in the ground. I do this only to make sure that the seeds will sprout, and this way they germinate faster than when you plant them directly in the ground.
I ended up with about 10-13 plants, some sprouted and stopped growing at some stage, and in general there are some ugly plants that don’t look much like tomatoes, unfortunately I didn’t take pictures of them and threw them out.
Around the end of May - beginning of June, I planted tomatoes in open ground, when the frost had passed.
I planted it, tied it up right away, watered it, and basically did everything that was required.
And now it’s the end of July and the beginning of August and the tomatoes have already begun to turn red on the bush!
Unfortunately, powdery mildew has already appeared on the plants, but this is no longer scary, because the tomatoes have begun to turn red!
As for the size of the bush, mine is much taller than the promised 30-40 cm, apparently because it grows in the fresh air in open ground, and not in a pot at home.
There are about 5 branches with tomatoes on the bush, as can be seen in the 3rd photo, the branches began to break off from the weight of the load, I didn’t have time to tie them higher, I didn’t keep track, so of course they wouldn’t have cracked.
I usually don’t wait for the tomatoes to fully ripen on the bush, when they start to turn red, I immediately pick them off, or when I see that they have reached their maximum growth, I also pick them off; it’s easy to determine from these tomatoes whether they have a maximum size or not).
I leave them to ripen at home on the windowsill of my little ones!
To summarize, I would like to note a few points:
- The seeds germinate poorly and not all
- Some plants stop growing
- In open areas plants are taller than 50 cm
- Not resistant to diseases
- The number of fruits on the bush is optimal
- We can say that the variety is early (but still it also depends on the weather)
In general, I like tomato seeds, I don’t remember the price, well, about the same as everyone else, 13-30 rubles, nothing more.
I’ll have to buy these seeds again and try to grow them at home, maybe it will work!
True, I don’t have a lot of sun on the windowsill, which is why all the seedlings always stretch out very much, which causes difficulties during transportation. While I’m delivering it, a part may break, and this applies to the Balcony Miracle to the same extent. True, the balcony miracle is a little lower than its colleagues of other varieties.
The diameter of the mature fruit reaches about 2-4 cm.
Of course, I definitely recommend planting and eating these tomatoes!
Bon appetit and gardening to you, fellow gardeners)!
Philippok
This variety is loved by many. It grows well not only on the balcony, but also in a greenhouse or in open ground. The bush is not tall, up to 40 cm, but there are a lot of tomatoes on it. The plant is strong enough, so it does not need to be tied up. They are red, medium in size, sweet with a slight sourness, and pleasant to the taste. Tomatoes of the Philippok variety are universal - eat straight from the bush or roll them up for the winter.

This list is only a small part of the varieties that grow well on a balcony or windowsill. Some will use it for their garden experiments, while others will offer their favorite varieties. Write in the comments what kind of tomatoes you grow on the loggia. We will be happy to tell you more about them.
How to care for indoor tomatoes
Growing tomatoes on the balcony requires appropriate care. There are some peculiarities here.
The first thing to remember is
sufficient watering.
As a rule, there is not much space in the planting container, and the soil often dries out under the influence of the sun's rays. On especially hot days, water even 2 times a day.
When feeding, it is important to observe moderation. Fertilizers are applied no more than 3 times in one season. With an excess of additional nutrition, the plant will begin to increase green mass, giving all its strength.

The most unique and unusual varieties and hybrids of tomatoes
Pinching is carried out only for those varieties of balcony tomatoes that have rapid growth of side shoots. They are broken off, leaving no more than 5.
The garter helps the plant hold fruit. Tall bushes must be tied up at the seedling stage.
Advice!
It is not recommended to treat tomatoes for balconies and windowsills with chemical insecticides and fungicides in the presence of pests and diseases.
It is better to use folk remedies: potassium permanganate, herbal infusions and others.
