February is the right time to select and purchase tomato seeds, which we will sow in March. I have been growing tomatoes in a greenhouse and in open ground for only 6 years, but I have already managed to create my own hit parade of tomato varieties.
Garden Review
Lushtitsa F1 tomato seeds were bought two years ago, but she was able to plant them only this season. And all because there is little space, but there are many varieties and hybrids.
But already the first experience of growing this modern hybrid made it possible to add this tomato to my favorites.
What is so attractive about this hybrid?
Firstly, it is early, producing the first ripe fruits within 100 days after germination.
Secondly, it is productive. Starting from the 7th internode, it throws out flower clusters and sets 7-9 fruits. And the growth of this tomato is unlimited, in the conditions of my greenhouse the vine grew up to 3 m. It grew into two stems, I think that this is what reduced the number of fruits in the cluster to 5-6.
Thirdly, it is resistant to disease and stress. Last season there was enough stress - sometimes it was cold, sometimes it was too hot. But Lushtitsa grew stubbornly and set fruit. It is now October, all the plants in the greenhouse have already been harvested, except for Lushtitsa. So, due to the cold weather, there are practically no leaves on the vine, but about a dozen fruits are ripening. Regarding diseases, the authors of the hybrid claim that the hybrid is resistant to tomato mosaic, Alternaria, bacteriosis, Fusarium and Verticillium wilt, and cladosporiosis. I agree: I wasn’t sick with anything. He suffered only from periodic spider mite infestations.
But most of all I liked the taste of this hybrid. The fruits are a very beautiful golden color with an orange tint, well shaped like a large elongated cream with a tiny nose. The skin is thin, smooth, the flesh is dense. But not dry, but a pleasant sweet taste with light sourness and tomato aroma. For tomato lovers, I note: this hybrid is tastier than the increasingly popular Banana Legs variety.
Fruit weight is from 60 to 140 g. I liked that the fruits do not overripe, even if they hang on the plant for a long time, and often ripen in the cluster at the same time. They ripen and store well. At the end of October they ate fruits that were picked almost ripe at the beginning of September. They were perfectly preserved, did not change the taste and looked excellent in appearance, except that the skin of the largest ones was slightly wrinkled in the area of the stalk.
Since the plant is large, I would say powerful, the yield is high, strict adherence to agrotechnical requirements is required - planting no more than 3 plants per square meter, 3-4 fertilizing per season and maintaining moisture in the root zone. Good lighting is very important. Next season I will plant 2 plants and increase the distance between them to 70 cm. I noticed that this season one plant was partially shaded by another tomato and the fruits were smaller than on the other, completely exposed to the sun.
I didn’t specifically weigh the harvest (and how can you weigh everything, if some of the fruits didn’t even go outside the greenhouse, but were eaten directly from the bush), but in August alone, almost 3 kg of fruits were taken from one bush in one harvest.
The best varieties of tomatoes
There are must-have varieties that I always plant every year. I like them not only for their taste and unpretentiousness, but also for the way they look on the bush. I’ll paraphrase one bearded joke: “I don’t really like tomatoes... But the process itself...”. I love going into the greenhouse and admiring the tomato plantations. And I don’t hesitate to show off my particularly spectacular huge tomatoes to my neighbors, and then post photos on the forum. It’s a shame to hide it – we all love it!
The following varieties are among the favorites also because they do not need to be fanatically cultivated and shaped. And they will always give a harvest: small, large, and a lot, depending on the variety and what I grow them for - for salads, for preparations, or, the smallest and sweetest ones, so that “like seeds, they click.” .
The “Rocket” variety is suitable for both greenhouses and open ground. The fruits are identical in shape and sweet. We love to eat them by the handful. Look good in blanks. The bush requires garter, despite the fact that the package says the opposite. This is because a lot of fruits grow, and the bush bends from the weight. Its height in open ground is about 40 cm, and in a greenhouse it can reach up to 60 cm. This is a mid-season variety; it does not need to be pinched.
The best varieties of tomatoes: description, reviews, photos, characteristics
The selection was created based on reviews from gardeners from different regions of our country based on the results of 2022. The tomato varieties described below are recognized as the most delicious according to the results of this year's season.
After the article there are a huge number of additions on varieties from gardeners in Siberia, the Far East, the Urals, Central Russia, as well as the Southern regions. Add your reviews and post photos of the most successful varieties of tomatoes.
The best tomato with green fruits
From green tomatoes - the Malachite Box variety.
Malachite Box
The bush of this tomato is tall, more than 1.5 meters, it is grown with one stem, a maximum of 2. In terms of ripening time, the Malachite Box belongs to the mid-early tomatoes. The fruits weigh 200-300 grams, with a thin skin that can be easily removed if necessary. The color of ripe tomatoes is green with a yellowish tint. The taste is incomparable, sweet, aromatic.
The disadvantages of this variety include deterioration in taste when overripe (becomes watery) and unsuitability for transportation. Doesn't last long. Planting such tomatoes can also be recommended for those who have frequent thefts in their gardens, since the color of the Malachite Box is misleading about the ripeness of the fruit. Green-fruited varieties of tomatoes are an excellent substitute for red counterparts for people prone to allergies to them. Malachite box tomatoes can be grown both in a greenhouse and in open ground.
The malachite box outperformed such well-known green-fruited varieties in terms of taste as Swamp, Irish Liqueur, Princess Frog, Emerald Apple, and Kiwi.
The best tomatoes with red fruits
variety Batyanya
Of the red and pink large tomatoes, the following were recognized as the best this year: Pink Honey , Dimensionless , Bull's Heart , Batyanya , Miracle of the Earth, Pink Helmet . Of course, they are all quite different, but they have received the largest number of positive reviews.
variety Pink honey
The Pink Honey tomato variety is one of the most delicious; it has very large, heart-shaped, sweet and fleshy pink fruits. Tomatoes on the first bunch can weigh up to 1 kilogram, especially if you form the bush into 1 trunk and normalize the number of ovaries.
In a greenhouse, the height of the bush is usually more than a meter, in open ground it is lower - 60-80 cm. According to the State Register, the variety is determinate, mid-season, resistant to major diseases, changes in temperature and humidity. It is usually formed into two stems; for this, one stepson is left under the first flower cluster, and the remaining side shoots are cut off.
The Bull's Heart variety is a classic; it is the most famous and popular tomato. It is grown in almost all regions; in the middle zone it is recommended to plant it in a greenhouse. The fruits are large, heart-shaped, beautiful, at the ripe stage they have an excellent tomato taste with sourness. The yield from 1 bush reaches 5 kg, of course, subject to the basic rules of agricultural technology. We recommend forming into 1-2 stems. If you leave more stems, the fruits will be slightly smaller.
Yellow tomatoes, the best varieties
Of the yellow ones, good varieties of tomatoes are Honey King and Orange .
variety Honey King
Orange variety
The Orange tomato bush reaches a height of one and a half meters; the variety is semi-determinate. It is grown in 1-2 stems, both in greenhouses and in open ground. Bright orange, round, smooth and beautiful, fleshy fruits can weigh from 200 to 400 grams. They are suitable for canning and preparing preparations, and are also tasty in fresh salads. The taste of these tomatoes is tomato-like, with a pleasant sourness.
Varieties of black tomatoes
Tasmanian chocolate variety
My favorite black tomatoes this year were Tasmanian Chocolate and Lilac Lake.
The fruits of these tomatoes are very similar - flat-round, red-violet with pink flesh, fleshy, very tasty, weighing 200-400 grams. During the ripening process, these tomatoes have green shoulders.
Tomatoes with anthocyanin
Sergeant Pepper variety
Recently, these varieties of tomatoes have gained popularity. These are red, pink, orange fruits with a purple coating (anthocyanin). It is usually most pronounced on the shoulders of the fruit. The more sun the fruit received, the more pronounced this purple hue is.
This year, the best reviews are for such varieties as Sergeant Peppers , Gargamel , Amethyst Jewel , and Siberian Tiger . These are all tall varieties; they are grown with a garter to a support and the formation of 1-2 stems. The taste of the fruit is slightly different from the classic varieties; the taste contains fruity shades. Such tomatoes with anthocyanin are very beneficial for health.
Yellow cherry tomatoes, good varieties
For cherry tomatoes, Honey Drop and Yellow Date
variety Honey Drop
The Honey Drop tomato bush is tall, in a greenhouse it can be higher than two meters, in open ground it is usually up to one and a half meters. It is best to form it into 2 stems. If you leave more branches, the plantings will be too dense. The distance between the bushes should be at least 40-50 cm, since the bush has large leaves and large bunches of tomatoes (12-15 pcs on one branch) and it needs a lot of space. The weight of each tomato is 10-15 grams, they taste very sweet, absolutely without acid. The variety is very lightweight and transportable.
Date yellow variety
There are a lot of reviews about the Ildi . Tall, with very large complex fan clusters, often containing more than 30 fruits. The taste is sweet, but tomato-like. A very beautiful tomato at the fruiting stage!

Tall tomatoes for the greenhouse
I definitely plant the listed varieties, but there are also some that I just liked, and I periodically grow them in the greenhouse, but I have not become a fan of them. Of the indeterminates, I like the raceme varieties the most. Again, this is primarily because they look beautiful on the bush. There are only three varieties, and each has a special reason to grow it.
“Intuition F1” is a mid-season hybrid, but I would classify it as a late-season hybrid. Not only does it reach harvest ripeness only by mid-August, but biological maturity also comes quite late. Some specimens of these tomatoes ripen even until the end of October. But, on the other hand, this is convenient because as a result, we have our own fresh tomatoes at home for a very long time. That's why I sow it in February.
Tomatoes for open ground
Among the tomatoes for growing outside, I liked only five. Although all tomatoes for open ground can be grown in a greenhouse, if there is space. It is simply more efficient to occupy a greenhouse not only in width, but also in height, so it is customary to place low varieties outside, under temporary shelter or without it at all.
The hybrid “Market King III F1” got its name for a reason. I grow it under cover and without, depending on how much space remains in the greenhouse after the main plantings. It is considered early ripening, although I would not say so. I plant it with pleasure, because in any summer - both cloudy and hot - it produces a stable harvest. Most likely, this is because it is resistant to various diseases. In a greenhouse it grows slightly higher than in open ground. A garter is needed because the fruits, especially the lower ones, are very large.
Rice. 30. “Market King III F1” produces aligned fruits (in the red basket).
Rice. 31. “Apple tree of Russia” on a bush.
Rice. 32. “Apple Tree of Russia” stores well, including when frozen.
Rice. 33. “Buyan” is a long-known trouble-free variety for open ground.
Rice. 34. “Buyan” is good for pickling.
Rice. 35. I bought “Leningrad Chill” in economical packaging - 200 seeds in one. It lived up to its name, did not freeze during frosts, and grew well both in the greenhouse and outdoors.
Rice. 36. But the yellow-fruited variety “Wonder of the World” turned out to be the most cold-resistant for open ground. It sets an incredible amount of fruit.
From the low ones I also tried “Kremlin F1”, “Peach”, “Orange Sun”, “Dushechka”, “Tiger”, “Sanka” . Despite the hype, these varieties disappointed me.
And finally, dwarfs. These tomatoes are suitable for even the laziest or busiest gardeners. They do not require gartering, watering and, especially, pinching.
Rice. 37. Dwarfs only need to be mulched in mid-June and come to harvest in early August.
Rice. 38. Although, if you sow them at the end of February, you can harvest the first harvest on July 1, as in this photo.
Rice. 39. They bear fruit all summer.
I tried “SamRastet”, “Florida Petit”, “Pygmy”, “Pinocchio”, “Balcony Duet” - I liked them all.
Rice. 40. “Florida Petit” bore fruit even at home.
This year I will have only three new products: the tall “Shuntuk Giant” and the standard “Far North” and “Winter Cherry” . All of them have good reviews on the forum.
Do you have any tomato varieties that you must plant every year? How many are there, and what are they called?
