How to properly plant cucumbers and corn in open ground, is it possible together?

Is it possible to plant crops together?

Joint cultivation of crops is not only permitted, but even desirable. Crops, being in one area, grow together and bring a good harvest. Corn acts as a trellis and additional protection from the wind for cucumbers. As soon as the first tendrils appear on green plants, it is recommended to immediately attach them to the trunks of corn, since vertical growth minimizes the risk of infection with a fungus.

Also, by growing two crops in one bed, the yield period increases significantly. The period is extended until September, and in some regions - until mid-October.

Important! The root system of crops is located at different depths, therefore it does not oppress or interfere with the development of each other.

I plant corn around the cucumber beds to protect the cucumbers from the hot sun. The cucumbers did not climb up the corn. The proximity for these crops is normal; the corn did not take too much nutrients away from the cucumbers. And the cucumbers were good, and the corn was excellent.

For corn, feeding with potassium is very important. So, to a bucket of water you need to add potassium chloride (40 g), ammonium nitrate (20 g) and superphosphate (20 g)

This amount of solution must be divided into two wells. It is advisable to repeat this procedure once every 2 weeks.

Corn sowing begins after the danger of frost has passed and the soil temperature at the planting depth has reached 8 - 10 °C. The optimal growth temperature for corn is 18 – 24 °C. But light frosts down to minus 3 °C are not scary for seedlings. If during the flowering period of corn the air temperature is above 30 °C, then this has a bad effect on fertilization, which entails a decrease in the overall yield, as well as a deterioration in the quality of corn cobs.

Curtains from any crop are designed primarily to protect cucumbers from the wind. Therefore, it is advisable to plant across the prevailing winds. I plant only two rows of cucumbers, so I have curtains along the edges of the bed. Firstly, cucumbers are not oppressive, and secondly, corn is easy to hill up later. But you definitely need to at least germinate the corn, or better yet, grow seedlings in a greenhouse (but this is, of course, aerobatics). Corn grows slowly, but cucumber quickly begins to choke the corn with its mass. But to be honest, I prefer the scenes made from mallow or phacelia. During flowering they attract pollinating insects. And beautiful.

Are the care requirements the same?

Corn is unpretentious in care and does not require special conditions, so it is recommended to focus on good growth of cucumbers.

However, the watering regime must be set taking into account the deep root system of the bush with cobs.

There may be a fight over nitrogen fertilizers. To prevent plants from oppressing each other, it is recommended to apply separate, rather than general, feeding. Proper mulching (straw or dried grass) will also have a positive effect.

Advantages and disadvantages of the neighborhood

Placing corn and cucumbers together in one bed has a wide range of advantages:

  • the absorption of beneficial microelements improves (through pollination and fertilizing), which accelerates growth and fruiting;
  • the period of ripening and harvesting increases;
  • cucumbers find themselves under the reliable protection of corn;
  • the risk of fungal diseases is reduced;
  • Living together greatly saves space and time spent on caring for plants.

However, nothing is perfect, and such a neighborhood also has a number of disadvantages:

  • constant struggle for nitrogen fertilizing;
  • If cucumber wattles are not formed, they can negatively affect the corn yield.

Important! It is recommended to plant corn a little earlier than green seedlings so that the trunks become reliable trellises and the cucumbers do not choke them with their tendrils.

Suitable corn varieties for growing together

It is difficult to identify several suitable varieties of corn suitable for joint cultivation with cucumbers. The main condition for planting is a good high wall of cob bushes. And in this matter, much depends on the weather conditions of a particular region. Therefore, in unfavorable climatic conditions, it is recommended to rely on the advice of local experienced gardeners.

It is necessary to exclude the possibility of planting initially low-growing corn as an auxiliary neighbor of cucumbers. After all, if the trunks rise less than 1.5 meters, additional supports will need to be installed.

Preparation before sowing cucumber seeds in open ground

To get an excellent harvest, you need to properly prepare the planting material and properly plant the cucumber seeds in the ground.

Seed preparation

Many gardeners prefer to plant dry seeds in the ground. It is good if they have undergone appropriate processing in production.

But if you use your own material, you need to prepare it in advance. This is done in several stages:

  • Sort through the seeds, set aside the smallest, damaged or darkened ones.
  • Carry out disinfection. Experienced gardeners say that you need to soak cucumber seeds before planting. To do this, you can use Fitosporin (the rules for working with the drug are indicated in the instructions), or you can dilute a weak solution of potassium permanganate or take pharmacy chlorhexidine or hydrogen peroxide.
  • For lovers of folk remedies, a garlic solution is suitable as a disinfectant for soaking. To prepare it, crushed cloves in the amount of 2-3 pieces are poured into 100 ml of water and infused for 24 hours.
  • Another organic remedy is aloe juice mixed with water in a 1:2 ratio. 1 glass of solution is enough. The seeds are left in it for half an hour, after which they are washed with clean water.

Sprout the seeds. This is done in the classic way. A wet napkin or gauze (you can even use toilet paper or cotton pads) is placed in a plate, the seeds are placed on it, and the same napkin is covered on top. The saucer is placed in a warm place. Shoots appear already on the second day.

Choosing the right site for sowing cucumbers

Cucumbers grow best in well-lit places, although for regions with a less favorable climate, breeders have developed good shade-tolerant varieties (Sekret Firma F1, Muromsky 36, Green Wave F1, Master F1, etc.). All information is usually indicated on the packaging.

It’s best if you sat in the garden before the cucumbers:

  • onion;
  • garlic;
  • cabbage;
  • eggplant;
  • peppers;
  • tomatoes.

It is strictly not recommended to plant cucumbers after melons, as well as after themselves.

Preparing a bed for sowing cucumbers

Light fertile soil with neutral acidity is most suitable for cucumbers. The best time to prepare beds is in the fall. But if you still don’t get around to it, it doesn’t matter. The work can also be done in the spring, about 2 weeks before the seeds are planted. The difference will be that phosphorus fertilizers are added in the autumn, and nitrogen fertilizers in the spring.

In addition, you can fertilize the soil in the following ways:

  • Spread compost or humus (7 kg per 1 sq. m) on the surface of the bed, scatter wood ash (150 g per 1 sq. m), and then dig the ground to a depth of 20 cm.
  • Before digging, add nitroammophoska to the soil, which contains all the minerals necessary for plants.
  • Dig up superphosphate, potassium sulfate, urea or ammonium nitrate along with the soil. Consumption is indicated on the packages.

If the soil on the site is heavy and clayey, then it is necessary to dilute it with sand, humus and non-acidic peat.

Features of planting vegetable crops

To increase the yield coefficient of each crop, it is recommended to adhere to some nuances when planting:

  1. To save time, corn needs to be sown a little earlier in greenhouse conditions. This will allow the seedlings to grow and become stronger to further support the cucumbers.
  2. When sowing or planting (depending on the chosen method), it is recommended to strictly follow the planting pattern.
  3. It is also necessary to take into account that corn will not create a dense wall and it may be necessary to create additional protection from the wind.

Timing of planting work

The timing of the start of planting work depends entirely on the weather conditions of a particular region. However, it is recommended to start planting cucumbers with corn after establishing a stable soil temperature of about 10-12 degrees. You should focus on the period from mid to late May.

It is also recommended to sow seedlings according to a certain algorithm. Corn is sown about a month earlier than cucumbers so that the stems become stronger and serve as a reliable support. If corn is sown in open ground, you can lose precious time for planting cucumbers. Because of this, sometimes they do not have time to ripen.

At what distance to plant cucumbers from corn?

There are several suitable schemes for planting crops together, and the distance depends entirely on the method chosen. To form a denser wall, use the 1:1 method. This means that for one trunk of corn there is one bush of greens. With this arrangement, it is recommended to plant according to the 30x30x30 pattern.

A 2:1 scheme is also acceptable. Then the distance between the corn reaches about a meter, and two hedges of cucumbers are placed between the trunks.

Important! Using this method, it is necessary to correctly distribute the load on the trunks of the cobs so that the wattle fences of the greens do not block the access of sunlight to the corn.

Often the choice of crop placement scheme depends on the desired result, weather conditions, plot size and planting conditions. Arrangement methods vary depending on whether planting in open ground or in a greenhouse.

In the open ground

In open ground conditions, the optimal schemes will be “one to one” or “two to one”. It is important that the distance between plants is not less than 30 centimeters, otherwise the root system may be suppressed.

In the greenhouse

To plant corn and cucumbers in a greenhouse on one bed, a 1:1 scheme is used so as not to load the cob trunks. It is also recommended to take into account the need to spray the cob plant with a growth stimulant and additional hand pollination.

Transplanting

With the seedling method of growing, seedlings can be planted according to the same scheme as when planting seeds. Carefully remove the plant from the container, having previously moistened the soil so that it does not crumble from the roots, and place it in a prepared hole slightly larger than a lump of soil on the seedlings. The hole must first be watered with water. Cover the top with dry soil and carefully compact it.

To avoid problems with pollination, corn should be planted in 2-3 stripes, since it is self-pollinating.

How to organize proper plant care

The key to a successful neighborhood will be compliance with two main rules of care:

  1. Compliance with the watering regime. This includes quantity, frequency and temperature. It is not recommended to water the plants until a pool forms on the soil surface; this leads to the development of fungus and rot.
  2. Mulching. The proximity of two crops requires indispensable mulching with dry mown grass. The mulch layer should be at least 10 centimeters. This will reduce the frequency of required watering and will destroy the growth of weeds in the bud.

Experienced gardeners also recommend fertilizing separately for each plant. This will allow you to deliver the maximum amount of nutrients to each crop.

Five rules for harvesting

They look like this:

  1. Evening watering is prohibited. High humidity levels and low temperatures can cause spider mites or powdery mildew to appear;
  2. Until the cucumbers form the third leaf, they must be watered with warm water so as not to harm the plants’ immune system and not to stop their growth. Subsequently, the plant is watered in moderate quantities at the root, only in the morning;
  3. feeding is an important feature. After the third leaf, mullein is added at a rate of one to ten or chicken droppings (1 to 20). The second stage occurs during the flowering period. Here ammophos or nitrophos is used in the amount of fifty grams per bucket of water. At the same time, foliar feeding is carried out, for which manganese, boron, zinc and copper are used. The amount of the drug (1 gram) is added to ten liters of water;
  4. the plant needs to be shaped. The cucumber does not branch intensively and forms a small number of lateral branches. For this reason, at the fourth leaf stage it is necessary to pinch off the tops. This will enable each leaf to create new shoots, increasing yield;
  5. loosening of the soil is carried out between the rows, the depth should be about ten centimeters. After laying the third leaf, the depth of the procedure is halved so as not to damage the roots.

To achieve maximum effectiveness in this way, it is necessary to organize proper care. Seeds are planted in well-fertilized soil, watering and loosening are carried out in a timely manner, and weeds are constantly removed.
