15 Best Apricot varieties: description and characteristics, their frost resistance, transportability and taste (Photo & Video) + Reviews

Most experienced or novice gardeners have grown or are planning to grow tasty and healthy apricots on their plots. In this article you will find information about what varieties of apricots there are, the name and description of the most common types. Apricot varieties popular with gardeners are self-fertile species that are recommended to be grown in small garden areas when it is not possible to create a large garden. All species are included in the State Register of Selection Achievements. These varieties and species are distinguished by effective fruiting, have an amazing, pleasant taste, visual appeal and a unique, incomparable aroma.

Types of apricots

Garden culture loves saturated soil and sunny climate. The tree begins to bear fruit after 3-4 years. Some types of apricot grow even in areas with harsh climates. Apricots are divided into:

  • cultivated
  • wild

There are 54 cultivated species. But it is believed that more varieties are grown in amateur gardens. The fruits of such trees are juicy and tasty. Such garden fruits are a godsend for true gardeners. The fruits impress with a pleasant sweet-sour taste and juicy pulp. Among the cultivated species there are the best varieties of apricots. The most widespread varieties are the common apricot. Such varieties take root well and bear fruit in any garden plot.

Gardeners also do not ignore wild plants. So, in some areas, poles are cultivated - ungrafted apricots, the fruits are usually small-fruited and propagated by seeds. The weight of their fruits is from 8 to 35 grams, while in large-fruited cultivated varieties the weight can reach 165 grams. Wild species also differ in taste from cultivated ones. They are low-juicy, more acidic, but less demanding on soil quality, and winter-hardy.

The birthplace of apricot fruit trees is considered to be China, the Tien Shan region. However, apricot came to Europe from Armenia.

A separate species is the Siberian Apricot (Prunus sibirica), which grows “wild” in the Dauria Mountains - a unique place in the Trans-Baikal region.

Manchurian (Liao-hsing) is another type of apricot that stands out with some features. Its native places of growth are northeastern China, Primorye, Korea. A characteristic feature of 15 meter trees is their resistance to harsh winter climates; they are able to withstand 40 degree frosts. The fruits are 2.5 cm in diameter. The flesh of the wild ones is bitter and practically unsuitable for food, but there are also cultivated perches with sweet, pleasant pulp. This species is valued because it is essentially the only, best pollinator and highly winter-hardy rootstock for all varieties of apricots. Thanks to him, hybrids of Manchurian and ordinary apricot species appeared in the northeastern regions.

Let's look at the most common varieties of apricots, with names and descriptions.

How to choose a self-fertile apricot variety for growing in the Moscow region

Back in the first half of the 20th century. Domestic and foreign breeders have developed apricot varieties that are self-pollinating without additional measures or with partial use. The phenomenon represents the ability of trees to bear fruit without cross-pollination with other varieties.

The following factors influence the yield:

  • plant age;
  • compliance with pruning rules;
  • climatic conditions.

Breeders point to the fact that plants produce crops and self-pollinate differently in different climatic conditions, that is, the lack of need for crossing depends on the variety. You can check the properties of a tree in the following way: you need to put a bag on a separate branch before flowering begins, and after that, count the number of buds and fruits on this branch.

Absolute yield indicators according to the characteristics of the crop can be achieved only if the rules of agricultural technology are observed, which imply its pruning, treatment with protective and nutrient mixtures, and the correct selection of the plant for the climate of the area.

Apricot is a woody plant with a spreading, round crown. It blooms profusely in pink or white every spring. After the flowers bloom, leaves appear. In the Moscow region, according to weather conditions, this phenomenon is observed in early May. At this time, there is a possibility of frosts, which can destroy the tree during the flowering period.

The selection of apricots according to weather conditions is made taking into account the following aspects:

  • Frost resistance of a variety is the ability of a tree to withstand prolonged low temperatures.
  • Resistant to temperature changes and precipitation. This property is especially relevant during spring thaws and cold snaps.
  • Ability to withstand rainy periods or drought. In certain seasons, situations may occur when there is a lack of sun and heat or there is heavy rain.

Climatic conditions also influence the timing of harvest.

It is preferable to plant early varieties in the Moscow region that bear fruit in early July. However, you should not give up on medium and late mature trees. Many varieties have all the characteristics necessary for the region.

An important factor is the size of the tree. Compact plants are suitable for small areas. Tall and spreading apricots can be grown in large areas, although harvesting them is difficult work.

Choosing a fruit tree variety can be reduced to the following steps:

  1. Determining the method of pollination (self-fertile or cross).
  2. Selection according to climatic requirements.
  3. Designation of the harvest period.
  4. Choosing tree sizes.

The bush tree is actually a plum, a member of the rose family - widely used for landscape gardening. The plant thrives in areas with warm climates. Small fruits have a sour taste - they are used in processed form, and oil is produced by cold pressing.

Columnar apricots

Columnar apricots are compact trees with a column-like crown. They are very popular due to the fact that they take up little space on the site, and their yield is not inferior to conventional varieties.

Sunny

A compact tree up to 2.5 m high. It does not have a crown as such; the fruits are formed on short branches extending from the trunk. The yield is high - in one season, 2 buckets of tasty fruits are harvested, each weighing 40-60 g. The tree can withstand frosts down to -35°C.

Experts recommend planting this variety in sunny areas, but they also ripen well in light partial shade. This is a self-sterile variety; the following are planted next to it:

  • columnar variety "Prince Mart";
  • non-columnar "Big Red".

The harvest ripens in the first half of August. A frost-resistant variety, it is not afraid of cold temperatures down to -30°C. Like all columnar varieties, it requires regular pruning. One of the disadvantages is worth noting - early flowering; in case of return frosts, some of the flowers may die.

Prince March

This is a low tree, the height of which reaches only 2 m. The first fruits are collected in 2-3 years. It is recommended to grow it in areas with a warm climate, but with proper agricultural technology it bears fruit well in the middle zone.

Frost-resistant variety, can withstand temperatures down to -30°C. However, it is sensitive to spring frosts and the flowers may be damaged.

Does not require additional pollination and copes with this task independently. Fruits weighing 30-60 g ripen in August. On the sunny side, one of the barrels is covered with a noticeable blush. The crop is immune to diseases and pests and requires annual pruning. How and when to prune apricots, read here.

The best apricot varieties for central Russia

Trees were once grown only in temperate climates. However, breeders have done their best to ensure that in the central zone of the Russian Federation the trees adapt to weather conditions and begin to bear fruit well. Now you can grow early, mid-early and late species in the middle zone.

Khabarovsk

A very productive, early-fruiting crop. The tall, five-meter tree has average resistance to frost. It can do without pollinators, but for a larger harvest, it is worth planting the “Snezhinsky” or “Amur” varieties nearby. The fruits are yellow-green, quite large, 35-45 g, their surface has small tubercles. The pulp is bright yellow, almost orange, medium juicy, sweet with a slight sourness. Disadvantage: low transportability. It is better to eat the harvest fresh than to preserve it.

Red-cheeked

Known to breeders and gardeners. Suitable for successful cultivation in the vicinity of the capital and in the middle zone. Does not require careful care. It begins to bear fruit at 3-4 years. The tree is medium-sized, 4 meters tall; if formed in time, the crown of the plant will be spreading. It is unpretentious in feeding. Tips and tricks for growing

The best varieties of apricots for the Moscow region are not capable of producing a harvest if the rules of care are not followed.

There are a number of general recommendations for growing crops:

  • It is better to plant trees on the sunny side of the site (in the south or southeast direction).
  • Ideally, the plant is protected from northern winds by a wall or fence.
  • All trees prefer fertile, fertilized, loose soil.
  • Compliance with the rules of agricultural technology for growing crops plays an important role. Trees must be subjected to sanitary formative pruning every year. Watering ensures good yield. It is usually considered normal to use 15 to 40 liters of water at a time, depending on the age of the tree and the weather.

  • A necessary measure is the application of fertilizing, which begins in early spring. Suitable fertilizers for apricots are urea and superphosphate. They are applied in an amount of 15-20 g per 10 liters of water to the tree trunk circle. During the fruiting period, it is better to use complex mineral fertilizers. After fruiting, fertilizing is carried out with humus, pouring water and mulching, and in the fall a solution of phosphate-potassium fertilizers is again applied in the amount of 15-20 g per 10 liters of water.
  • When choosing a variety, you need to take into account that some self-fertile ones require regulation of the amount of ovary. If there is abundant flowering, part of it must be removed.
  • Experienced gardeners carry out the prevention of fungal diseases and their treatment with the drug Skor Horus according to the instructions.

The development of breeding science is constantly moving forward and every year new varieties of apricots appear in gardening, including self-fertile ones. They deserve attention when the planting area is small and does not allow for growing a large number of trees.

For the Moscow region, it is necessary to choose frost-resistant and winter-hardy apricot varieties; this is the best thing that is suitable for the local climate. Other parameters (tree height, disease resistance, ripening period, taste characteristics) can be selected according to personal preferences.

Early apricot: description of the variety, features and growing process

Apricot Early: photo of the variety

Before we review the best early varieties of apricots and give them a more detailed description. It is worth emphasizing that ordinary apricots, which have a medium or late ripening period, differ significantly from fruits that have an early ripening period.

For example, Melitopol early apricot, as well as its other varieties, which begin to bear fruit in July, require special attention and care.

Early apricots are also more sensitive to sudden temperature changes. As a rule, they are not so well resistant to climatic conditions. They practically cannot tolerate frost and are more vulnerable.

This all once again suggests that if not properly cared for, the plant will not survive a long winter. And it is basically impossible to expect fruit from it.

In the process of growing early varieties of apricots, it is necessary to create the most comfortable and favorable conditions. As well as proper care so that the plant feels as comfortable as possible.

Caring for early apricots involves regular pruning, application of a complex of fertilizers and fertilizing. As well as gradual treatment of plants from pests.

Speaking about pruning, it should be noted that early-fruiting varieties require it at least once a year. This is important to do so that larger shoots form on the tree.

Pruning should also be done when the air temperature drops at least five degrees. Otherwise, after pruning, the plant risks freezing and never producing fruit again.

If we talk about summer pruning, it is usually carried out in mid-August, when the entire harvest has already been harvested.

Speaking about optimal watering of such early varieties, experienced gardeners recommend doing it in a ring ditch. Apricots receive their first watering at the very beginning of their flowering. And the second time, apricots are watered during a period of very active shoot growth.

10 days before the fruits ripen, the gardener can make a third abundant watering.

The pit is prepared in the fall. Drainage is placed at the bottom to retain moisture. They also add some additives and organic fertilizers, which are necessary to create a favorable environment in the soil.

During the process of growing the plant, fertilizing should also be repeated. In the spring, gardeners apply chicken manure in liquid form. And also peat, as it is extremely beneficial for apricot plants.

If we are talking about fertilizing in the autumn, then organic fertilizers are the most relevant. Which the gardener himself can create in his own summer cottage (if he has animals).

Early apricot varieties (for example, the Voronezh variety) are very unstable. They have weak immunity if we are talking about diseases and attacks from pests. Diseases such as:

  • moniliosis;
  • brown spot;

In order to protect early apricots from these and other diseases, it is necessary to periodically spray with preparations. Especially those with a high copper content.

Early varieties of apricots do not need insulation. But, according to some advice from experienced gardeners, in conditions of severe frosts, some early varieties should still be covered. Otherwise, the plant may get sick or not take root in the soil.

It is also enough to rake the snow around the trunk to prevent freezing or freezing.

Top 5. Tsarsky

Rating (2021): 4.60

Withstands frosts down to -38 Tsarsky is able to withstand winter colds down to -38 degrees, being one of the most frost-resistant apricot varieties.

Varieties depending on ripening time

Gardeners recommend choosing apricots for the Moscow region (the best varieties have different ripening periods) based on climatic conditions. For any plant, an important factor is the required number of warm days during which the fruits absorb juice and reach ripeness.

Depending on the time of fruit ripening, cultivated varieties are divided into 3 types:

  • early;
  • average;
  • late.

The timing of fruit harvest also affects the whimsicality and sensitivity of trees to spring thermometers dropping below zero and temperature fluctuations.

The table summarizes the general characteristics of the species:

VarietiesHarvest periodGeneral characteristics
EarlyFrom the first days of July to the middle of the monthThere is a great sensitivity to fluctuations in thermometer readings during the blooming of flowers and the formation of the ovary. They require more preventive measures to combat diseases and fungi. Suitable for eating in its natural form.
AverageFrom mid-July to early AugustThe variety withstands spring weather and diseases well. Requires less labor to care for it. Suitable for both fresh consumption and processing and canning.
LateMid-August – early SeptemberSuch fruits tolerate transportation best and can be stored fresh until the New Year.

Early

Early apricots are the more preferable varieties to choose in the short summer conditions observed in the Moscow region. The earliest apricots can bear fruit in early July.

These varieties include:

  • Iceberg. The plant was bred in 1986. The tree is notable for its small size, good winter hardiness, and disease resistance, but it does not tolerate drafts, so it must be planted in places that are not susceptible to wind. Apricot is a cross-pollinated variety. Gardeners note that it is better to plant Alyosha or Lelya next to him. The fruits have a light carrot color, slight blush, and medium size. The taste is dominated by sweetness.

  • Tsarsky. The variety was bred relatively recently (about 30 years ago). Apricot is recommended for growing in the Moscow region. It is a popular tree that grows slowly, reaching a height of 4 m. The fruits are characterized by low weight (20 g), oval shape, yellow color with a slight pinkish blush. Apricot has a pleasant aroma and a sweet peach flavor. The fruit is a medium-yielding species. Transports well.
  • Early Red Orange.
  • Early from Morden.
