Growing

The first reason why gardeners choose the Red Cherry tomato is that growing it will not be particularly difficult. Red cherry tomatoes, like many other types, are most often grown using seedlings. But in order to get it, you need to immediately sow the seeds.

Growing seedlings

To plant a variety, only viable seeds must be selected. Then, the day before planting, they must be treated with a solution of potassium permanganate. The soil in which the cherry tomatoes will be planted also plays an important role. It should have neutral acidity and be quite nutritious.

Such land can be purchased at a specialized store or made independently. To do this, you just need to mix black soil with sand. You also need to prepare a container in which the tomatoes will be planted. Now plant the seeds and cover the container with a plastic bag. The red cherry will remain in this state until sprouts appear.

Plants require careful care

As soon as the seeds hatch, the bag will need to be removed. Now the moment has come when you should carefully care for your tomato.

Seedling care

After the first shoots appear, the soil should be watered regularly. It is advisable to do this in moderation to prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged. Air temperature also plays a big role for young seedlings. It should not be below 25 degrees.

In order for tomatoes to grow as quickly as possible, they need to be provided with sufficient lighting. If it is not possible to create such conditions naturally, then you will have to provide lighting artificially, using an LED lamp.

Planting seedlings in open ground

Growing seedlings does not take much time and effort, but in order to transfer them to open ground it is also necessary to carry out a number of preparations. The seedlings must be hardened off immediately; this is done when the seedlings already have 4 true leaves. Tomatoes are taken outside every day for 15-20 minutes. After you have hardened and the air temperature outside is constantly 22 degrees, you can plant the seedlings.

Most often this period falls in the middle or end of May. To transplant the variety into open ground, you need to fill the container in which the seedlings are located well. Then carefully pull out one seedling at a time and transfer it to the ground.

Variety care

Caring for tomatoes Red cherries are the main component for obtaining a high-quality harvest. It consists of the following:

  • watering;
  • feeding;
  • weed removal;
  • mulching the soil.

Removing weeds near tomatoes of this variety is a very important point, because the grass clogs the ground and does not allow the plant to develop normally. You should also remove the stepsons that are actively developing in this species. Immediately after planting the seedlings, they need to be tied up, because tomatoes of this variety grow about 2 meters in height. If this is not done, then during the growth process they will simply break.

It is necessary to water Red Cherries in the same way as other varieties of tomatoes. Do not overdo it with adding moisture to the soil, as this can harm the plant. With a large amount of moisture, the roots of the tomato begin to rot, which can lead to the death of the plant.

The variety can be fertilized using organic or inorganic preparations. Some people use compost, manure and even boric acid for feeding. Any fertilizer is good for tomatoes in its own way, but it is worth remembering that they should be applied strictly according to the scheme. After all, an excess of nutrients also negatively affects the crop.

Planting and care

The unpretentious variety of tomatoes “Winter Cherry” does not have any peculiarities in the growing process. They mainly use the seedling method. Seeds are planted in early April. After the appearance of the second full leaf, picking is carried out.

Planted in the ground in early June. By this point, the tomatoes should have 5-6 leaves.

Trending Pilaf with chicken and shrimp

No pinning required. Garter to a trellis or support if desired.

The landing site should be sunny and, if possible, protected from the wind. The distance between plants is 25 cm. Up to 10 plants can be planted per 1 m2.

When growing tomatoes of any variety, one should not forget about timely weeding, loosening and introducing fertilizers. It is best to do this before flowering and before the fruits begin to ripen.

Growing "Winter's Tale" in greenhouses is also practiced.

Sowing seedlings

It is recommended to grow this tomato variety through seedlings. To do this, in the second half of March or mid-April, the seeds are sown in seedling boxes with loose and fertile soil. Containers must be kept at a temperature of 25-27°C until germination. After the first shoots appear, the boxes are moved to a well-lit place, and the temperature is reduced to 20-22°C.

After the second true leaf appears on the seedlings, they begin to pick them into larger containers or into separate cups. Before planting in open ground, seedlings must be hardened off. To do this, a week before the scheduled date, the boxes are taken out to the veranda or balcony for a day.

Expert opinion

Yulia Yurievna

I have a large garden and vegetable garden, several greenhouses. I love modern methods of cultivating plants and mulching the soil, and I share my experience.

Ask a Question

If you decide to grow this variety of tomatoes in seedlings, we recommend starting with choosing a container. This can be a plastic or wooden box at least 5 cm deep. It can be either solid or mesh. In the first case, drainage holes need to be made in the bottom. It is better to make them small, but in sufficient quantity and evenly over the entire bottom area.

If the box or other container is lattice, then agrofibre or film can be laid on the bottom. If film is chosen, it is also worth making slits or other holes in it for good moisture drainage.

The next step is laying the drainage layer. Very small pebbles and old sawdust work well. You can prepare a soil mixture from garden or forest soil (the base of the mixture should make up more than half of the total substrate), rotted humus and deoxidized peat. You can add a little sand.

When the soil is mixed it needs to be disinfected. We recommend pouring boiling water over it with dissolved dry boric acid. The proportion is 2 grams per 10 liters.

It is better to make small holes or grooves for planting seeds. Planting depth is 0.5-1 cm. When sowing, it is better to maintain a distance of 2 cm both between the seeds and in the row. It is important that the plants have enough space and do not compete for light or nutrients.

Crops need to be covered with plastic film to create a greenhouse effect, and watered as the soil dries. When the first shoots appear, the film is removed. Otherwise, the tomatoes will be thin, pale and elongated. When growing in an apartment, you need to change the position of the box every few days so that the light falls evenly on all the seedlings.

When the plants get a little stronger, we recommend watering them at least once with a weak solution of manganese. This will protect the plant from fungus, which often affects seedlings at home.

You can start picking seedlings at the age of cotyledons, but it is better to wait until they become a little larger and stronger. This will make the procedure easier. It is better to pick in peat tablets or special cups. Toga planting in the ground or greenhouse can be done by transshipment, and this is less traumatic for the plants.

Hardening is indeed very important, but it must be done gradually. On the first day, it is better to take the tomatoes to a quiet corner with diffused light and leave them there for 1.5-2 hours. Every day the walking time needs to be increased. Immediately before planting, the seedlings should spend several nights outside.

Disease susceptibility

Early ripening tomatoes “Winter's Tale” are practically not susceptible to the main disease of the crop, late blight. Most often, they manage to bear fruit before its mass distribution.

Cherry tomatoes red cherries

There are several varieties and hybrids of cherry tomatoes.

In this article we will talk about the “Red Cherry” variety. This variety is not new; 20 years ago it was included in the Russian State Register of Breeding Achievements. Created by seed production.

This is really a variety, not a hybrid, so you can get seeds for planting next year from ripe fruits of the current harvest. Moreover, it is difficult to purchase these seeds in regular stores.

Here is a description of “Red Cherry” and why it is good:

According to reviews from summer residents who grow Red Cherry, the variety has minor disadvantages:

To grow Red Cherry tomatoes in your garden, you need to know the usual agricultural techniques for growing tomatoes, plus some nuances related to cherry varieties.

At the end of March and until April 5-7, it is time to grow seedlings.

It is recommended to take care of purchasing tomato seeds of this variety in advance, during the winter.

Planting seeds for seedlings

First, you should select seeds of the same size and weight. All seed material is soaked in a solution of table salt of 5% concentration; for this you need to dilute a teaspoon of salt in a glass of water. Pour the seeds there and mix; after 20 minutes, remove the unsuitable ones that have surfaced. Wash and dry those that remain at the bottom.

The next step is disinfection of the seeds. It is necessary to remove fungal spores, harmful microorganisms and pathogens from the seed. The seeds are placed in a dark pink solution of potassium permanganate for 15-20 minutes, then they must be removed from the solution and washed with clean water.

Nutrient soil prepared from high soil and humus or compost is poured into a wooden box or plastic container. You can also use ready-made universal primer purchased at the store. Level the ground, moisten it, make holes 1-1.5 cm deep at a distance of 2-3 cm from each other. Throw one seed into each hole and cover it. Then water, wrap the box in plastic wrap and place in a warm place.

When the seeds sprout, remove the film and place the container with the seedlings in a cool, well-lit place. Water moderately, not allowing the soil to dry out, but do not over-moisten it.

When the second or third true leaf appears on the sprouts, the plants need to be pruned. Carefully dig up the seedling, cut off the tip of the central root and plant it in a separate container with a diameter of about 10 cm. If you make cups from paper, you can transplant them into the ground directly into them.

Planting in a greenhouse or garden bed

When the threat of frost has passed and the weather is warm enough, in the first half of June, you can begin planting seedlings in garden beds.

You can transplant them into the greenhouse a little earlier, at the end of May.

In any case, the soil must be well prepared: leveled, cleared of weeds, sufficiently fertilized. Infusions of manure, compost, and wood ash are suitable as fertilizer for this variety of tomatoes.

The distance between plants should be at least 60 cm. Next to each of them it is necessary to place a peg, which will be used to tie up the plants.

Further care and harvesting

The first watering is carried out no earlier than a week after planting the tomato bushes. In the future, water as the top layer of soil dries. Watering should be done moderately, avoiding changes in humidity.

The soil in the tomato bed must be loosened regularly to provide oxygen to the root system.

Pinching and forming a bush is a necessary condition when caring for “Red Cherry”. It is also necessary to feed the plants, the first time 3 weeks after planting, then when the fruits ripen. To fertilize, use superphosphate, potassium nitrate or complex fertilizers, as well as a solution of wood ash.

At the end of August, it is recommended to pinch the tops of the plants so that they do not grow further, but concentrate on the ripening of the fruits.

Harvesting may begin in early or mid-July and end in October, with the onset of frost. Only reddened fruits should be collected, but not allowed to become overripe, otherwise they will crack.

Harvest volume and food use

From one plant you can get up to 2.5 kg of tomatoes. But if you care for the plant according to all agrotechnical standards, the yield will increase. On average, from 1 m2 you can harvest up to 10 kg of tomatoes.

The suitable characteristics of the fruit make the tomato indispensable in home canning, as it is perfect for whole pickling. Also used fresh and as a decoration on tables.

Description of the Kira cherry tomato and growing the hybrid using seedlings

Cherry tomato Kira can be grown in greenhouse blocks, on open ground. Since this plant feels good in small containers, and also has an attractive appearance, it is cultivated on balconies and loggias of multi-story buildings. Cherry tomatoes Kira f1 and their varieties can also be used for decorative purposes, for example, to decorate a personal plot.

Technical data of the plant and its fruits

The characteristics and description of the variety are as follows:

  1. The first tomato fruits can be obtained 95-110 days after sowing seedlings in the ground.
  2. The bush of the plant has a height of 150 to 170 cm. The stem develops an average number of leaves, colored in dark tones of green.
  3. The tomato inflorescence is simple.
  4. From 18 to 20 fruits may appear on the brush, the shape of which is similar to a ball, slightly flattened on top.
  5. The weight of the berry ranges from 25 to 30 g. The fruit has an average density. It is painted orange. The berries do not crack under mechanical or thermal influence.
  6. The plant is unpretentious to growing conditions. It is resistant to diseases such as late blight. You can avoid the development of some other tomato diseases if you weed the beds in time to remove weeds, hill up tomato bushes, dose watering, and mulch the soil.

Reviews from farmers cultivating the described variety show that the tomato yield is 6.0-12 kg per 1 sq. m beds. You can get up to 1.5 kg of berries from a bush. Gardeners note some disadvantages of the variety, for example, Kira requires the formation of a bush. To grow the plant, you need to buy seeds every year.

If the tomato is planted in a greenhouse or open ground, then after harvesting in the fall, you can move the Kira tomato into the room, placing the plants in suitable containers.

Tomatoes of this type are used to make salads and juices. You can preserve tomatoes for the winter in the form of whole fruits or prepare them for assorted dishes.

Trade organizations willingly purchase fruits from gardeners, since the berries can withstand long-term transportation. The fruits can be stored in a cold place for 70-80 days.

Breeding the described variety in a personal yard

To grow tomatoes, buy seeds in specialized stores. They do not need to be treated with potassium permanganate, as this has already been done by the manufacturer. The seedling method is used to propagate tomatoes. Seeds are sown in suitable containers, after introducing mineral and organic fertilizers into the soil. The depth of sowing the seed into the soil is 20 mm. It is necessary to water the seedlings in a timely manner, and after they reach a height of 10 cm and the appearance of 2-3 leaves, the plants dive.

The sprouts are transplanted into a greenhouse or open ground when they reach the age of 50-60 days, having previously hardened the seedlings for 10 days.

Before planting seedlings, the beds are loosened and manure or chicken droppings are added to them. The formation of plants is carried out in 2 stems. Due to the large height of the bush, a garter is required to strong supports or trellises, otherwise the branches of the plants may break under the weight of the fruit.

Watering the bushes is carried out after sunset. To do this, use warm water. Bushes are fed 2 times. The first time is with nitrogen and potassium mixtures when the plants are flowering, and then during the ripening of the fruits, superphosphate and potassium nitrate are added to the soil.

It is recommended to weed and loosen the beds 1-2 times a week. Although this type of tomato is resistant to various diseases, it is recommended to carry out prevention by spraying the leaves on the bushes with medicinal preparations, for example, Phytophthora. Garden pest control is carried out using chemical poisons or traditional methods of exterminating insects and their larvae. To get rid of slugs, ash flour is used, which is added to the soil under the tomato bushes.

Positive and negative characteristics of the variety

“Winter Cherry” tomatoes have a large number of positive features, which is why they are valued by summer residents.

Pros:

  • The fruits do not crack.
  • Long shelf life.
  • Excellent transportability.
  • Versatility of use.
  • Great taste.
  • Disease resistance.
  • Cold resistance.
  • Unpretentiousness.

Successes and disadvantages

This variety will be appreciated by lovers of small-fruited tomatoes. The pulp of the fruit contains the invigorating sourness characteristic of cherry. The flavor range is fully manifested in fresh cuts, when using fruits as decoration, in canned whole fruits, in sauces and juices.

Other advantages of the hybrid tomato:

  1. Low susceptibility to TMV, fusarium, cladosporiosis, powdery mildew.
  2. Precocity. Quite a rare characteristic for indeterminates.
  3. High yield. One bush produces 2.5-3.7 kg of fruit per season.
  4. A large proportion of fruits are of commercial quality. The total yield of such tomatoes is about 75% or up to 10 kg/sq. m (in a greenhouse shelter).
  5. Resistance to negative weather factors.

The hybrid also has disadvantages:

  • there is no data on the keeping quality and transportability of fruits;
  • declared limited areas for cultivation;
  • the timing of tomato ripening coincides with the annual outbreak of late blight;
  • the plant requires additional care in the garden: gartering, shaping and maintaining its shape.

The main positive quality of Winter cherries is that when growing this variety, the plant does not need to be tied up or pinched. The trunks of the bushes are no longer strong, so there is no need to hill them, in the hope of preventing breakages when the fruits are filled.

The variety is grown by seedlings.

Before planting, you must carefully sort out the planting material. Seedlings should be grown only from dense and whole seeds.

Selected seeds are disinfected in a weak solution of manganese.

The seeds are planted for seedlings in early April. Shallow boxes are filled with light and nutritious soil. The seeds are deepened into the soil 1.5-2 cm, sprinkled with warm water and covered with film or thin glass. To germinate planting material, containers are placed in a room with a temperature within 23-25 degrees Celsius.

As soon as the first shoots appear, the boxes are freed from film or glass and placed on a windowsill well lit by sunlight.

After the first true leaves appear, the plants are planted in separate pots. During growth, seedlings need fertilizing with mineral fertilizers and regular watering.

Bushes are planted in garden beds at the beginning of summer. At this point, the plants should have 5-6 true leaves. The place for planting Winter Cherry tomatoes should be sunny, protected from drafts and wind. The recommended distance between bushes is about 25 cm. Per 1 sq. 5-7 tomatoes are planted per meter.

The plant does not form lateral shoots (stepchildren), and its stem grows in thickness throughout the season. Therefore, tomatoes do not need pinching and tying to trellises.

Bush care

Basic recommendations for caring for “Winter Cherry” plants:

  • Moderate watering with settled water;
  • Loosening the soil in an area planted with tomatoes;
  • Timely weeding;
  • Feeding tomatoes with organic fertilizers and mineral complexes.

Tomatoes "Winter Cherry" prefer organic fertilizers:

  • Mullein infusion;
  • Humus;
  • Bird droppings;
  • Rotted plant remains.

Organic matter is added to the soil during its loosening and after watering the plants.

Diseases and pests

The review variety is resistant to the following dangerous diseases:

  • Fusarium;
  • Cladosporiosis;
  • Tobacco mosaic virus;
  • Powdery mildew.

During an epidemic of late blight and other fungal infections, tomatoes completely lose their harvest. If the plants are still infected with late blight, they are treated with preparations with a high copper content.

Of the insects, only aphids are dangerous to tomatoes. The pest is destroyed using traditional methods: plants are sprayed with soapy water, infusions of wormwood or garlic. When aphids appear en masse, the plantings are treated with special insecticides.

Productivity

Tomatoes are not characterized by very high yields - about 2.5 kg per bush.

The “Winter Cherry” variety was originally created by breeders for cultivation in the northern and middle climatic zones. Tomatoes tolerate cold weather well and are successfully grown in unprotected soil even in Siberia and the Urals.

Description of the variety, its features

Winter cherry F1 is a cherry tomato variety. It was introduced in the 90s and included in the State Register in 2003. The originator is the Ilyinichna agricultural company. Over the years of tomato cultivation, gardeners have learned to achieve its maximum productivity. The hybrid is a unique result of selection. It has no pure varieties of the same name.

The tomato is aimed at all regions of the European part of the country. There is no data on successful cultivation in Siberia, the Urals or the Far East. The plant is tall, weakly leafy, with medium-sized leaves. The fruit balls are dense, fleshy with excellent tasting qualities for hybrids. During the ripening period, they cover the stems with thick scarlet clusters of 18-20 pieces.

Attention! The Biotechnika company's seed catalog includes the Winter Cherry variety. This is a completely different tomato: determinate, medium-fruited, with crimson-colored fruits.
