Description and characteristics of the variety

Tomato Wessel's Violet Pride belongs to the indeterminate group, is tall and strong. Among the features of shoots, agricultural technologists pay attention to the following characteristics:

  • height 1.9-2 m;
  • trunks are semi-spreading;
  • foliage is moderate;
  • 5-7 tomatoes are tied in clusters;
  • There are 8-9 brushes in total.

Ripening occurs in medium terms. Usually this is 114-120 days from germination.

Tomato Description:

  • average weight varies between 100-150 g;
  • large specimens weigh 200-220 g;
  • purple color with purple tints;
  • the flesh is dense, moderately juicy, fleshy;
  • The skin is strong, thin, but does not crack.

The taste is characteristic - a pleasant sweetness joins the tomato sourness.

Features of cultivation

The tomato variety is very heat-loving, so it is preferable to grow it outdoors in the southern regions or in greenhouses. It is not recommended to plant in the shade, so as not to inhibit the upward growth of the bush. It is better to immediately set aside a sunny place, protected from the winds, for sowing. Before planting, the soil must be enriched with organic fertilizers. It is advisable that the composition include humus, sand, soil and peat.

At the beginning of March, the preparation of seeds for sowing begins. If desired, you can keep the seeds in a growth stimulator.

For sowing, use small pots, approximately 10x10cm in size. The seed is buried 2 cm and sprayed with water at room temperature. The pots must be covered with film or glass and placed in a warm, sunny place. Do not allow the soil to dry out; periodically open the container with the seeds for ventilation. When the first shoots appear, the film can be completely removed.

You can pick tomatoes when there are 2-3 leaves on the sprouts. Place the sprouts planted in cups in a bright, warm place for 2 months, regularly moistening the soil.

Already in mid-May, seedlings are planted in open ground or in a greenhouse. It is better to plant together with clods of earth, calculating 4 plants per 1 sq.m.

If planting is accompanied by lower air temperatures, then it is necessary to cover the seedlings with film or agrofibre until the weather warms up. This way you will ensure yourself a decent, high-quality harvest.

One more nuance. Do not allow tomatoes to be adjacent to potatoes. They have common pests!

In general, “purple” tomatoes are very easy to care for. The most important thing is to form the bushes, tie them up, apply fertilizing and monitor watering. It is correct to water only at the root. And keep in mind that if you grow tomatoes in a greenhouse, then after watering you need to loosen the soil so that excess moisture evaporates and rot does not form.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages of the variety:

  • productivity;
  • ideal for pickling and canning;
  • wonderful taste and product criteria;
  • simple agricultural techniques;
  • transportability and keeping quality;
  • extended fruiting - until October frosts;
  • resistance to variable weather conditions.

Of the minuses:

  • needs good lighting;
  • the importance of fertilizing;
  • not suitable for areas with a short summer season;
  • The vegetative part takes a long time to form.

Varieties of purple tomatoes

If previously purple tomatoes were considered a curiosity and could be found very rarely, today they are found quite often not only in greenhouses, but also in open ground. Purple and black tomatoes have many advantages over red and yellow varieties. Not only the skin, but also the flesh is colored in an unusual color. The shade can vary from light chocolate to purple, almost black.

What determines exotic coloring

The characteristic color is provided by the increased content of blue anthocyanins. It is thanks to them that the skin of tomatoes acquires a violet, purple or black hue. This color not only gives the tomatoes an attractive appearance, but also provides the tomatoes with beneficial properties.

Nutritionists have long noticed that eating berries, vegetables and other fruits that contain blue pigment helps prevent many diseases and has a healing effect on the human body. Regular consumption of anthocyanins reduces the risk of:

  • some types of cancer;
  • cardiovascular diseases;
  • diabetes mellitus;
  • senile dementia.

A special gene that is present in purple tomatoes helps improve immunity and has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. If you regularly eat indigo tomatoes, you can get rid of swelling.

The assortment of Chinese tomato seeds includes photographs of bright blue, inky purple and completely black fruits. Do tomatoes really come in these colors? No, in reality, by violet color, breeders mean natural shades of indigo. Red or pink flesh is hidden under the dark skin. And photographs of Chinese tomatoes are often retouched, which distorts the color.

On a note! Varieties with a large amount of anthocyanins change color when exposed to high temperatures. In canned food and hot dishes, the color of tomatoes becomes red or brown.
