Breeders made a real gift to gardeners by breeding bunched cucumbers. They are also called bouquet ones, because. During the flowering process, from 3 to 10 flowers are formed in the axils of the leaves, one might say, a whole bouquet. One such plant with a bouquet ovary can produce 2-3 times more fruit than a regular cucumber.
And such plants are distinguished not only by consistently high yields. There are many other advantages: massive ripening of the fruits, their excellent taste without bitterness and small size (mainly gherkins or pickles), ideal for pickling and canning. In addition, bunch cucumbers are resistant to major diseases and pests, and many are able to set fruit without the participation of pollinators and faster than “regular” cucumbers.
Early varieties of cucumbers
Early cucumbers ripen up to 45 days, and ultra-early cucumbers ripen even faster, up to 40. Here are a few of these varieties!

Selection by ripening period
Cucumbers can be either early ripening or long-bearing. If the region is characterized by a short summer, early varieties are more suitable, but in the case of a long summer season, the best option is late varieties. Which of them are more productive should be considered separately.
Early (precocious)
From this group, productive varieties are:
- Masha . This is a universal hybrid that is resistant to dangerous diseases, including powdery mildew, viral mosaic and cladosporiosis. It is a self-pollinating variety and therefore does not depend on insects. 6-7 ovaries are formed in the nodes, and the size of one greenery is about 80-110 mm. The harvest can be harvested on the 36th day after planting. Cucumbers have a cylindrical shape with a medium-thick skin, which is covered with large tubercles with small spines. The pulp is devoid of bitterness.
- Herman . The growing season of this variety is 35-40 days. Bears short, lumpy fruits without bitterness. They can be eaten fresh or used for preservation. It is worth considering that the plant does not develop at temperatures below 8 degrees.
- Baby . Bears fruit 30-40 days after germination. They can be eaten fresh or used for storing for the winter. These cucumbers are bee-pollinated, so they grow only in open ground. They must be consumed within 10 days after harvesting, since then they lose their taste.
- Madam . It bears fruit on the 48th day after planting, weighing up to 85 g. It grows in bunches, each of which has up to 7 cucumbers, which have a thin skin with small tubercles. Great for pickling and making salads.
- Delicious. This is a vigorous bush that produces small greens weighing up to 140 g and up to 13 cm long. Cucumbers have loose skin and sweet, crunchy flesh. They are great for pickling. This variety is resistant to diseases and tolerates short-term drops in temperature.

Classification of varieties
In order for beginners to navigate the choice of planting material, it is necessary to study the characteristics and methods of breeding popular varieties with photos and descriptions.
There are many hybrids and varieties that differ in their cultivation characteristics and resistance to adverse factors. Modern improved varieties tolerate low temperatures better, are resistant to diseases, and the fruits reach large sizes. A popular variety is gherkins, which produce small fruits no more than 7 cm long, excellent for pickles. The last group is greenhouse cucumbers; the fruits reach their largest size (30 cm) and have smooth skin.
It is worth choosing a variety of cucumbers depending on their further use, for example, for pickling, pickling, fresh salads, sourdough, and long-term storage. You can even find seedless varieties.
Cucumbers are divided into groups according to several characteristics:
- ripening time;
- type of pollination;
- type of flowering;
- fruit size;
- number of fruits.
Depending on the taste and external parameters, varieties are used for different purposes.
- Salting. The fruits have a pronounced taste. The dense peel does not allow the shape to deform during growth. Housewives use pickling cucumbers mainly for canning for the winter and making pickles in barrels.
- A variety of salad cucumbers. They have a dense and crispy structure. Suitable for raw consumption. When pickled, the fruits become soft with a bitter aftertaste.
- Universal varieties. This variety does not require special care, provides a rich harvest, and is used raw and as pickles and for salads.
Late varieties of cucumbers
Late cucumbers ripen the longest - more than 60 days. They will delight you with the harvest when the early varieties have already finished bearing fruit.

Seed selection criteria
Those who blindly trust promising advertising claims (such as “Harvest Explosion” or “Ideal for Pickling”) are often disappointed. And the point here is not only in the integrity (or vice versa) of seed producers, but also in the possible misunderstanding by the buyer of the rest of the information presented on the bright bags.
The main selection criterion is the conditions in which you plan to grow cucumbers: in open beds, in a greenhouse or in the house
Cucumbers are cultivated both in open and protected ground (under film covers, in stationary greenhouses); There are even some species intended for growing on a windowsill or balcony.
To summarize the recommendations for choosing a suitable variety or hybrid, we provide basic data for some of them (see table):
Growing conditions | Main characteristics | Varieties and hybrids |
Open ground | Bee pollinated | “Monastic”, “Nezhinsky”, “Parisian gherkin”, “Acorn F1”, “Springhead F1”, “Farmer F1” |
Indeterminate or determinant
Zoned | ||
Mid-early and mid-season
Protected ground or home conditions | Parthenocarpic | “Kustovoy”, “Balagan F1”, “Heroic Power F1”, “Karapuz F1”, “Hit of the Season F1”, “Khrustik F1” |
Determinant | ||
From early to late ripening |
In addition, it is important what you are going to plant cucumbers for: for fresh consumption or for pickling. Salad varieties are distinguished by a delicate sweet taste - these are all smooth varieties of cucumbers or with white tubercles on the skin, and pickling varieties are prickly, tuberous, pimply with black pubescence or thorns. There are also universal ones that are suitable for any purpose.
Salad cucumbers are usually longer-fruited with thin skin. Among them are “Phoenix”, “Rezastr”, “Refectory F1”, “Taste of Childhood F1”, “Hercules F1”, “Noble F1”, etc.
If for experienced gardeners all the listed characteristics are clear, then for beginners it is better to decipher the standard terms and designations.

Any gardener is interested in varieties that produce high yields. You can try to grow them in a well-equipped greenhouse. What varieties of cucumbers are popular for greenhouses are described below.
Parisian gherkin - ripens 1.5-2 months after sowing. Twelve-centimeter fruits gain a mass of 85 grams. Calculation of the number of seeds and their sowing must be done taking into account poor germination.
The fontanelle is the most common cucumber, measuring about 24 cm, with an approximate weight of 150 grams. One bush yields more than ten kilograms.

Zelentsy grow up to twenty-four centimeters with an average weight of 300 grams. From a meter square of sowing you can get up to 30 kg of vegetables. The culture is resistant to many pests and diseases.
Parthenocarpic
Parthenocarpic

Here, female flowers predominate, and it is from them that the fruits are obtained. We do not confuse parthenocarpic with self-pollinating, they are different things.
On a note!
When pollinated by bees, parthenocarpic cucumbers may produce ugly fruits. And yet, such cucumbers do not have seeds. Next, note that parthenocarpic cucumbers are usually hybrids. Therefore, you won’t be able to make your own seeds from such cucumbers.

Types of cucumbers by type of pollination
Bushes of bee-pollinated cucumber varieties are compact, so they are planted more densely than others
Most higher plants are hermaphrodites, and cucumber is one of these plants. It develops both female pistillate and male staminate flowers within one individual.
Cucumber is a bee-pollinated crop - this means that in order to set full-fledged fruits, it needs pollinating insects that transfer pollen from the stamens to the pistils.
But there are special, specially bred parthenocarpic hybrids of cucumbers - in which so-called “virgin fertilization” occurs without pollination, usually with the formation of fruits without seeds or containing “empty” seeds without embryos. Plants characterized by the development of only seedless fruits are sterile and reproduce exclusively by vegetative means.
It is generally accepted that parthenocarpic cucumbers are not as tasty as bee-pollinated ones. This is not true
Parthenocarpy is known in many cultivated plants and is often a firmly established varietal characteristic. How does this influence your choices?
Parthenocarpic cucumbers produce fruits of equal size and color without bitterness, which do not turn yellow (since they do not require ripening of the seeds), are stored for a long time and are not damaged during transportation. Such cucumbers are ideal for protected soil conditions - greenhouses, balconies and home windowsills, where pollinating insects cannot reach. And this is the main advantage of such hybrids.
Examples of parthenocarpic cucumber hybrids: Zozulya F1, Aprilsky F1, Klavdiya F1, German F1, Friendly Family F1, Emelya F1, Arina F1, etc.
If you want to grow cucumbers in open ground, then it is better to give preference to bee-pollinated varieties and hybrids. The fact is that on some parthenocarpic cucumbers, when pollinated by insects or during sudden temperature changes, fruits of a curved shape and bloated are often formed. And the seeds of parthenocarpics are usually more expensive than ordinary bee-pollinated cucumbers.
- Parthenocarpic and self-pollinating cucumber varieties for an unprecedented harvest - myths and truth
Many gardeners still confuse these concepts and are “led” by the beautiful promises of sellers.
Hybrids or F1 varieties
Why are hybrid varieties often better for growing in private gardening? Because, as a rule, such cucumbers are better adapted to unfavorable conditions, often have strong immunity against common diseases and simply taste better.
On the other hand, hybrids are always more expensive, since long, painstaking work is done to breed them. True, the costs are worth it, since the yields of hybrid cucumbers are better and more stable.
Prestige F1
An extremely unpretentious variety to growing conditions.
Its main feature is extremely regular and rather long fruiting.
These cucumbers are reluctant to grow side shoots, directing all their energy to the fruits.
Meringue F1
A high-yielding (from 8 kg per bush) and self-pollinating variety of cucumbers that bears fruit well.
Ripening cucumbers do not turn yellow for a long time if they are not picked in time.
Masha F1
Also a high-yielding variety with strong immunity.
Cucumbers are packaged in Holland.
But its main quality is excellent resistance to frost.
Mini cucumbers
Mini cucumbers, also known as gherkins, look very presentable in any preparation. They are also good in salads - the pulp of the small fruits is extremely tender and juicy, and there are almost no seeds. Zelentsy can be harvested once they reach a length of 3–5 cm; fully ripe specimens grow to a maximum of 10 cm.

Is a cucumber smooth or lumpy?
This healthy and popular vegetable is grown and eaten all over the world, while each country has its own preferences for both the taste and appearance of cucumbers. Long work on selection has developed among our compatriots their opinion about what the characteristics of good cucumber greens should be. For example, the main feature is the presence of tubercles on the fruit. That is why, such smooth-fruited varieties and hybrids of cucumbers, popular among Europeans, despite their high productivity and unpretentiousness, have not become widespread enough in Russia. According to recent surveys, many Russians prefer to eat cucumbers that are green in color, short-fruited, with a medium or large lumpy surface, and always crunchy.
But the situation is changing. Until recently, smooth-fruited hybrids occupied only 10-15% of the area, mainly in the first rotation. For quite a long time they were crowded out on the market by domestic hybrids - “Etafeta” cucumbers. The fact that smooth-fruited varieties are gaining popularity today can be associated with more intensive imports of vegetables from abroad. After all, out of season (3-4 months a year), when soil and greenhouse products are not supplied to store shelves, the most popular is the smooth type of cucumber with glossy, dark green skin, and 18-20 cm in length.
They are imported from Middle Eastern countries, where almost no one grows lumpy fruits. There was even a popular joke among Eastern vegetable growers: “Did the bumps on your cucumbers appear after Chernobyl?” Also, farmers from Asia are reluctant to grow pimply cucumbers for export, due to the fact that their purchase price is almost equal to the price of smooth cucumbers, but selling them on local markets is quite difficult. In addition, lumpy fruits tend to be damaged during storage and transportation, so they are not particularly valued by exporters themselves. As a result, our consumers are beginning to get used to smooth cucumbers, the taste of which in salads is not very different from the more familiar taste of lumpy varieties. Of course, not everything is to blame only for imports - our domestic market is also not always predictable. But the fact that today there is an increase in agricultural areas for smooth-fruited cucumber hybrids in the first and second turns is an indisputable fact.
Good self-pollinating varieties
Self-pollinating varieties of cucumbers are convenient crops that require virtually no care after planting. Such varieties are perfect for growing in greenhouses, as they set fruit from flowers without the participation of insects.
April F1
A popular self-pollinating hybrid, which is primarily valued for its excellent resistance to cold.
It produces very large fruits (up to 250 grams), and the total yield allows you to harvest up to 18 kg of cucumbers from a bush.
Claudia F1
Medium-early ripening varietal hybrid of cucumbers.
Universal cucumbers, suitable for salads and canning.
They bear fruit abundantly, but are valued for their powerful immunity. In 1999 it was included in the state register of the Russian Federation.
Ant F1
A variety very close in shape, taste and smell to traditional cucumbers.
Its main feature is its ultra-fast maturation.
Sometimes fruiting begins already on the 30th day after planting.
Influence of region on variety choice
To obtain a rich harvest of high-quality fruits, the regionalization of representatives of the vegetable crop is taken into account. For areas with harsh weather conditions, breeders have developed cold-resistant varieties, while for hot ones - drought-resistant varieties. Thanks to constant work at experimental stations, hybrids have been obtained in which, at the genetic level, the bitterness in taste that appears during moisture deficiency has been removed.
In most regions, due to the unfavorable climate, cucumbers demonstrate yields in open ground that are several times lower than when grown in a greenhouse.
In warm areas
Crimea, Krasnodar Territory, the Caucasus are zones where a vegetable crop is able to realize the potential declared by the originator without any shelter. Popular representatives:
- “Droplet” is an early-ripening, universal form. The bush is medium-sized, mainly female inflorescences are formed. Zelentsy have an oval, slightly elongated shape. They are strewn with large pimples and black spines. Weight – 60-75 g.
- “Crane F1” - specially obtained for open ground in the southern regions on experimental fields in Crimea. It has very high productivity due to the formation of 4-5 cucumbers in each internode. We pollinate bees.
- "Adam F1" is a German hybrid of the gherkin type. The maximum weight of leveled fruits of dark green color is 70 g. The tuberosity is pronounced.
For the middle zone and Moscow region
For this zone, the choice of suitable vegetable representatives is the widest. Best cucumbers:
- “Delicacy” – resistant to short-term cold snaps. Thanks to the extended fruiting period, the gardener can harvest flattened cylindrical greens for about a month.
- "Alligator F1" is a powerful, vigorous plant. In the internodes, after successful pollination by bees, fruits up to 40 cm long are formed. Due to their impressive size, greens are often used fresh for salads.
- "Madame F1" - combines such valuable qualities as high productivity, not a tendency to yellowing and overgrowth. The flowering type is female, which ensures stable productivity.
Varieties for Siberia and the Urals
There are also many cucumbers that are suitable for planting in areas with long springs and short summers. The most productive:
- “Altai” - has a short growing season, the harvest begins 36-40 days after seed germination. The length of the cucumber is 9-12 cm and weighs 100 g. It is cold-resistant and easily tolerates changeable weather. After harvesting, the fruits retain their presentation and excellent taste for a long time.
- "Serpentine" - gherkin type. Harvesting begins already on the 40th day after sowing. The fruiting phase is intense; already in the first 10 days, most of the greens are harvested.
- “Siberian Garland F1” is a hybrid resistant to low temperatures with prolonged fruiting - right up to autumn frosts. Tolerant to common cucumber diseases: brown spot, cucumber mosaic virus, powdery mildew; tolerant to peronosporosis.
A popular and easy-to-care parthenocarpic hybrid that bears fruit well in cool summer conditions is “Siberian Express F1”.
Appearance or “shirt” of a cucumber
German shirt
. Here, the cucumber is simply strewn with small tubercles with small spines. They are also distinguished by the presence of longitudinal stripes on the body of the fetus. The brine, with such a shirt, easily penetrates the cucumber, and this is thanks to the micro-holes from the spines.
The best varieties of cucumbers in the “German shirt”. For example: Lukhovitsky F1, Harmonist F1, Gerasim F1, Little Anyutka F1, Uncle Fedor F1, Mademoiselle F1, Izyinka F1, Libella F1.
Dutch shirt
. In this case, there are much fewer tubercles than in the previous version with a German shirt, but they are larger. Also, “Dutchies” are usually capable of bouquet fruiting. This is when up to 10 or more ovaries are formed in the leaf axil.
The best varieties of cucumbers in the Dutch shirt. For example: Lilliputian F1, Shchedrik F1, Red Mullet F1, Bobrik F1.
Russian (Slavic or Eastern) shirt
. Here, we have a small number of tubercles. The flesh is dense, the spines are black or brown. The brine penetrates into the fruit slowly and therefore the cucumber turns out crispy and tasty.
Popular cucumbers in a Russian shirt. For example: Murashka F1, Pososhok F1, Khutorok F1, Cellar F1, Graceful F1, Competitor F1, Alyonushka F1, Princess F1, Gin F1, Polina F1.
Asian shirt
. Smooth elongated fruits without tubercles or thorns, dark green in color. The taste is rich, but sometimes bitter. Used fresh and in salads.
The best varieties of cucumbers with an Asian shirt. For example: Highlight F1, Fruity F1.
Korean Japanese shirt
. Here, the fruits are pale green with sparse tubercles. Size within 20 cm. Used in salads.
The best varieties of cucumbers with a Korean-Japanese shirt. For example: Bride F1 and Blonde F1.
On a note!
White-thorn and black-thorn cucumbers. Usually, those with white spikes are for salad, and those with black ones are for pickling and pickling. But, at present, there are new hybrids that do not obey this rule. And therefore, they are pickled with white spikes.
The best varieties for the greenhouse
The most important criteria that you need to focus on when selecting cucumbers for a greenhouse are self-pollination and plant size. The presence of insects cannot be guaranteed. Manual pollination is a rather labor-intensive and time-consuming procedure.
