Growing rules

Since the variety is a mid-late variety, in most parts of the country it is cultivated in greenhouses, as well as in open ground using seedlings. In this case, even in a very cloudy summer, it is possible to harvest a good harvest of tomatoes, which can ripen in a warm room.

Planting seedlings

For seedlings, prepare a common container with soil (pH 5.5) up to 20 cm high, into which seeds, previously soaked in a disinfectant solution, are sown in the first ten days of March. Shoots appear within 5-7 days. With the appearance of the first leaf, you can pick the cups.

The optimal temperature regime for De Barao tomatoes is in the range of + 20-25 0C. When hardening, before planting in open ground, you can take it out into the air, heated to at least + 10-12 0C. To prevent too rapid evaporation of moisture, mulch is scattered along the planting line of the De Barao tomato, or a black agrofibre cover is used. Feeding is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. Once every 2 weeks, when watering, add a solution of superphosphate: 20 g per 10 liters of water.
  2. Once a week, water with a solution of mullein (1:6) or chicken manure (1:20).
  3. It is recommended to periodically water with nettle infusion. The green tops are filled with water and left for a couple of days, and then the drained liquid is used as top dressing.

Care

The De Barao variety is quite demanding in terms of compliance with agricultural cultivation techniques. Due to the powerful size of the bush and high yield, it requires attention and careful care.

  1. Watering. Tomatoes are watered every 2-3 days in sunny weather, and every 5-7 days on cloudy days. At least 5 liters of water are poured under each bush. Irrigation is carried out at the root of the plant with warm water. A few hours after watering, you need to loosen the soil.
  2. Fertilizer. 2 weeks after transplantation, the seedlings take root well; at this point, the first fertilizing with a solution of nitrogen fertilizer is recommended, for the preparation of which 20 g of fertilizer is dissolved in 10 liters of water. During the budding period, a second feeding is required with liquid phosphorus-potassium fertilizers or the complex preparation Kemira Lux, for which 1 tablespoon of the preparation is diluted in 10 liters of water. To avoid causing burns to the plant roots, fertilizing is carried out immediately after heavy watering.
  3. Bush formation. De Barao tomatoes are formed into one or two stems. This tall variety requires mandatory pinching, because excess side shoots prevent tomatoes from forming fruits. To make the bushes survive this procedure easier, the stepsons are removed when they are no more than 5 cm, leaving a small stump.
  4. Mulching. This event helps improve soil aeration, prevents overheating of the root system, promotes better moisture retention and prevents the formation of a surface soil crust.
  5. Prevention of diseases. The plant is resistant to fungal diseases. For the purpose of prevention, spraying with Zircon, Fitosporin and other immunostimulants is carried out (description of the preparation of the solution in the instructions). A solution of 1 cup of red pepper tincture (infuse 1 kg of chopped vegetable in a bucket of water for a week) in 10 liters of water with the addition of half a grated bar of soap will help against slugs and aphids.

There are no absolutely resistant tomato varieties and hybrids to diseases, much less pests. In protected ground conditions (indoors), all diseases develop rapidly. When the same crops are constantly grown in a greenhouse, pathogens accumulate that can cause an outbreak of the disease in a short time. Therefore, every year greenhouses must be completely disinfected with partial replacement of the soil.

Pest and disease control

The main method of combating diseases common to all nightshades is spacious planting, when the bushes do not shade each other. In this case, good natural ventilation is provided for all varieties of De Barao tomatoes, with a lack of which there is a rapid growth of foci of fungal and other diseases.

Tomatoes need regular watering, but do it strictly on the ground (without spraying the foliage) in the morning or evening. Moisture on the tops becomes a favorable environment for the adhesion of spores of pathogenic fungi and mold, and can also cause sunburn.

It is recommended to treat the Colorado potato beetle with Prestige. And if there are too many beetles, they are collected by hand and then destroyed. Treating the ground around the bushes with solutions containing hot pepper or mustard, as well as sprinkling with wood ash, helps against slugs.
